Stabilized photoemission from organic molecules in zero-dimensional hybrid Zn and Cd halides

This work explores the utilization of a photoactive organic cation for the preparation of R2MCl4 (M = Zn, Cd; R = (E)-4-styrylpyridinium, C13H12N+).

Trojan Horse Thiocyanate: Induction and Control of High Proton Conductivity in CPO-27/MOF-74 Metal-Organic Frameworks by Metal Selection and Solvent-Free Mechanochemical Dosing

Proton-conducting metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been gaining attention for their role as solid-state electrolytes in various devices for energy conversion and storage. Here, we present a convenient strategy for inducing and tuning of superprotonic conductivity in MOFs with open metal sites via postsynthetic incorporation of charge carriers enabled by solvent-free mechanochemistry and anion coordination. This scalable approach is demonstrated using a series of CPO-27/MOF-74 [M₂(dobdc); M = Mg²⁺, Zn²⁺, Ni²⁺; dobdc = 2,5-dioxido-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate] materials loaded with various stoichiometric amounts of NH₄SCN. The modified materials are not achievable by conventional immersion in solutions. Periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations, supported by infrared (IR) spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction, provide structures of the modified MOFs including positions of inserted ions inside the [001] channels. Despite the same type and concentration of proton carriers, the MOFs can be arranged in the increasing order of conductivity (Ni < Zn < Mg), which strongly correlates with amounts of water vapor adsorbed. We conclude that the proton conductivity of CPO-27 materials can be controlled over a few orders of magnitude by metal selection and mechanochemical dosing of ammonium thiocyanate. The dosing of a solid is shown for the first time as a useful, simple, and ecological method for the control of material conductivity.

Halogen versus Hydrogen Bonding in Binary Cocrystals: Novel Conformation a Coformer with [2+2] Photoreactivity of Criss-Crossed C=C Bonds

A series of cocrystals involving the hydrogen- and halogen-bond donor coformers catechol (cat) and 1,2-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (1,2-di-I-tFb), respectively, is reported. Each coformer forms a cocrystal with each of the three symmetric bipyridines trans-1,2-bis(n-pyridyl)ethylene (n,n'-bpe, where: n=n'=2, 3, 4). Four novel cocrystals (cat) ⋅ (3,3'-bpe), 2(1,2-di-I-tFb) ⋅ (2,2'-bpe), 2(1,2-di-I-tFb) ⋅ (3,3'-bpe), and (1,2-di-I-tFb) ⋅ (4,4'-bpe) comprise components that assemble by either O-H⋅⋅⋅N hydrogen bonds (cat) or N⋅⋅⋅I halogen bonds (1,2-di-I-tFb). In (cat) ⋅ (3,3'-bpe), cat acts as a template to support an intermolecular [2+2] photocycloaddition of 3,3'-bpe. The reactivity occurs via a one-dimensional (1D) hydrogen-bonded tape with stacked and criss-crossed olefins that react stereoselectively and quantitatively to form rctt-tetrakis(3-pyridyl)cyclobutane (3,3'-tpcb). The reactivity of the criss-crossed olefins is facilitated by a hitherto not reported cis-gauche conformation adopted by cat. The stereochemistry of 3,3'-tpcb is confirmed in the cocrystal 2(cat) ⋅ (3,3'-tpcb).

Synthesis, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of the complex [(CH3)3NH]2 [Co(NCS)4]

A new complex [(CH3)3NH]2[Co(NCS)4], in which zero-dimensional [Co(NCS)4] n 2− anions are balanced by 2n [(CH3)3NH]+ cations, was synthesized. The complex has been characterized by single X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and magnetic measurements. Magnetic susceptibility data indicate ferromagnetic interactions among the CoII ions.

1,2,4,5-Benzenetetracarboxylic acid: a versatile hydrogen bonding template for controlling the regioselective topochemical synthesis of head-to-tail photodimers from stilbazole derivatives

The crystal engineering of hydrogen bonded organic assemblies based on 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid (H4bta) and stilbazole derivatives (1-10) is exploited to provide regio-controlled [2 + 2] photocycloadditions in the solid state. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses have revealed that all the arrays are built-up from the self-assembly of the (H2bta)2- dianion with two stilbazolium cations via O-HO- and N+-HO- charge-assisted H-bonding synthons: (4-Hstilbazolium+)2(H2bta2-). The dianion displays an interesting diversity of H-bonding motifs. Such structural flexibility allowed us to obtain four structure-types defined by the preferential formation of intramolecular or intermolecular hydrogen bonds between carboxylate-carboxylic groups. In these ionic assemblies two predominant structural H-bonding patterns were observed. The first pattern is characterised by the formation of intramolecular H-bonds in the dianion, leading to discrete assemblies based on ternary arrays. The second hydrogen pattern consists of 2-D hydrogen networks built-up from the self-assembly of anions via intermolecular H-bonds that are linked to the cations. Two additional examples, in which the dianion is self-assembled in two types of ribbons, were also observed. Another supramolecular feature predominant in all these arrays is the stacking of the cations in a head-to-tail fashion, which is controlled via cation-π interactions. These arrays are photoactive in the solid state upon UV-irradiation leading to the regioselective synthesis of rctt-cyclobutane head-to-tail-isomers in high to quantitative yield. In this work, the template tolerance either to steric or electronic effects by changing the number or positions of the supramolecular interactions exerted by distinctive functional groups was also explored. In addition, assemblies bearing 2-chloro (7 and 8) and 3-chloro-4-stilbazole (1 and 9) crystallize in two different crystalline forms, leading to novel examples of supramolecular isomers with similar solid state reactivity.

Crystal structure of octa-kis-(4-meth-oxy-pyridinium) bis-(4-meth-oxy-pyridine-κN)tetra-kis-(thio-cyanato-κN)ferrate(III) bis-[(4-meth-oxypyri-dine-κN)pentakis-(thio-cyanato-κN)ferrate(III)] hexa-kis-(thio-cyanato-κN)ferrate(III) with iron in three different octa-hedral coordination environments

The crystal structure of the title salt, (C6H8NO)8[Fe(NCS)4(C6H7NO)2][Fe(NCS)5(C6H7NO)]2[Fe(NCS)6], comprises three negatively charged octa-hedral FeIII complexes with different coordination environments in which the FeIII atoms are coordinated by a different number of thio-cyanate anions and 4-meth-oxy-pyridine ligands. Charge balance is achieved by 4-meth-oxy-pyridinium cations. The asymmetric unit consists of three FeIII cations, one of which is located on a centre of inversion, one on a twofold rotation axis and one in a general position, and ten thio-cyanate anions, two 4-meth-oxy-pyridine ligands and 4-meth-oxy-pyridinium cations (one of which is disordered over two sets of sites). Beside to Coulombic inter-actions between organic cations and the ferrate(III) anions, weak N-H⋯S hydrogen-bonding inter-actions involving the pyridinium N-H groups of the cations and the thio-cyanate S atoms of the complex anions are mainly responsible for the cohesion of the crystal structure.

Photochemical reactions of metal complexes in the solid state

This perspective focusses on the solid-state reactivity and structural transformation driven by photochemical methods in discrete metal complexes, organometallic compounds, metallo-macrocycles and cages. Changes in the metal-metal bond distances, racemization of chiral centres, fusion of cages, formation of coordination polymers, expected [2 + 2] and [4 + 4] cycloaddition products, unusual phenyl-olefin dimerization, and linkage isomerization of -SO₂, -NO & -NO₂ ligands cause the structural transformations. Of these, [2 + 2] photo-cycloaddition reactions have been widely studied and the photoreactions are made possible by various supramolecular interactions including hydrogen bonds, metallophilic, ππ and C-Hπ interactions, ligand design and metallic clips to bring the reactive functional groups closely into correct orientation close to the transition state. These photoreactions are often accompanied by crystal bending, mechanical motion, and changes in the magnetic and photoluminescence properties. In several cases, the single crystals have been preserved at the end of the reactions, which are known as single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) reactions.

A novel example of double reactivity by either photochemical [2+2] or thermal additions of an ionic organic supramolecular assembly

An example of double reactivity in the solid state was achieved from an ionic array directed by charge-assisted hydrogen bonds.
