New Transition Metal Coordination Polymers Derived from 2-(3,5-Dicarboxyphenyl)-6-carboxybenzimidazole as Photocatalysts for Dye and Antibiotic Decomposition

Coordination polymers (CPs) are an assorted class of coordination complexes that are gaining attention for the safe and sustainable removal of organic dyes from wastewater discharge by either adsorption or photocatalytic degradation. Herein, three different coordination polymers with compositions [Ni(HL)(H2O)2·1.9H2O] (1), [Mn3(HL)(L)(μ3-OH)(H2O)(phen)2·2H2O] (2), and [Cd(HL)4(H2O)]·H2O (3) (H3L = 2-(3,5-dicarboxyphenyl)-6-carboxybenzimidazole; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) have been synthesized and characterized spectroscopically and by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Single crystal X-ray diffraction results indicated that 1 forms a 2D layer-like framework, while 2 exhibits a 3-connected net with the Schläfli symbol of (44.6), and 3 displays a 3D supramolecular network in which two adjacent 2D layers are held by π···π interactions. All three compounds have been used as photocatalysts to catalyze the photodegradation of antibiotic dinitrozole (DTZ) and rhodamine B (RhB). The photocatalytic results suggested that the Mn-based CP 2 exhibited better photodecomposition of DTZ (91.1%) and RhB (95.0%) than the other two CPs in the time span of 45 min. The observed photocatalytic mechanisms have been addressed using Hirshfeld surface analyses.

Application of polyoxometalates in photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants

Organic pollutants are highly toxic, accumulative, and difficult to degrade or eliminate. As a low-cost, high-efficiency and energy-saving environmental purification technology, photocatalytic technology has shown great advantages in solving increasingly serious environmental pollution problems. The development of efficient and durable photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants is the key to the extensive application of photocatalysis technology. Polyoxometalates (POMs) are a kind of discrete metal-oxide clusters with unique photo/electric properties which have shown promising applications in photocatalytic degradation. This review summarizes the recent advances in the design and synthesis of POM-based photocatalysts, as well as their application in the degradation of organic dyes, pesticides and other pollutants. In-depth perspective views are also proposed in this review.

Encapsulated anion-dominated photocatalytic and adsorption performances for organic dye degradation and oxoanion pollutant capture over cationic Cu(i)-organic framework semiconductors

Decontamination of industrial wastewater containing toxic organic dye molecules and oxoanions is urgently desirable for environmental sustainability and human health. Water-stable porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as highly efficient photocatalysts and/or adsorbents for water purification through controllable integration of the constitutive requirements. To reveal the inclusion anion effect of microporous MOFs on wastewater treatment, two isostructural MOFs incorporating positive charge and semiconductive characteristics, {[Cu(tpt)]·3H₂O·0.5SO₄}_n (1) and {[Cu(tpt)]·2H₂O·ClO₄}_n (2, tpt = 2,4,6-tris(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine), have been synthesized and employed as dual-functional materials for both dye photodegradation and oxoanion removal. The two MOFs possess the same 3-fold interpenetrating cationic backbones but are encapsulated by highly disordered sulfate or perchlorate in the open channels. These included anions have significantly tuned the hydrophilicity of the channels, extended the visible-light absorption, optimized the bandgap and decreased the conduction band potential. Under the low-energy irradiation of a 30 W LED lamp, MOF 1 has selectively and efficiently degraded rhodamine B compared to 2 with accelerated kinetics, resulting from the stronger reduction ability and less migration resistance of the photogenerated electrons. Instead, MOF 2 can quickly capture harmful MnO₄^- and Cr₂O₇^2- by exchanging with the entrapped ClO₄^-, with maximum adsorption amounts of 557 and 168 mg g^-1, respectively, under ambient conditions. The improved decolorization of the aqueous solution over 2 benefits essentially from the shape and charge memory effect and the smaller hydration energy of ClO₄^- than SO₄^2-. These interesting observations highlight the importance of the included anions inside the porous MOF semiconductors on wastewater treatment.

Sonochemical synthesis and characterization of four nanostructural nickel coordination polymers and photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue

Four nanostructural nickel(II) coordination polymers {[Ni(ttpa)(1,4-ndc)(H₂O)₂]·2H₂O}_n (1), {[Ni(ttpa)(1,3-bda)]·2H₂O·DMF}_n (2·2H₂O·DMF), {[Ni(ttpa)(1,4-bdc)]·H₂O}_n (3) and {[Ni(ttpa)(aip)(H₂O)]·3H₂O}_n (4·3H₂O) were synthesized using hydrothermal and sonochemical methods (ttpa = tris(4-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)phenyl)amine, 1,4-ndc = 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylate, 1,3-bda = 1,3-benzenediacetate, 1,4-bdc = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate, aip = 5-aminoisophthalate), and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, scanning electron microscopy, single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analysis, optical band gaps, VB XPS spectra and luminescence. The effects of sonication power, time and frequency on the size and morphology of nano-sized 1-4 have been studied. 1 exhibits an unusual 2D + 2D → 3D inclined polycatenated motif based on the (3,3)-coordinated 6³-hcb topology. 2 shows a (3,4)-coordinated 2D network of the bey topology. 3 presents a rare example of the 4-fold interpenetrating array of (3,5)-coordinated 3D network belonging to the 35T1 topology type. 4 displays an unusual 2D → 3D polythreaded network based on 2D sql networks. 1-4 exhibit luminescent emissions at 409, 399, 413 and 402 nm, respectively. 1-4 are semiconducting in nature, with E_g of 2.12 eV (1), 2.34 eV (2), 2.32 eV (3), and 2.47 eV (4). 1-4 are good catalysts for the degradation of MB under visible light irradiation. The effects of the size and morphology of nano-sized 1-4 on the photocatalytic efficiencies were studied. The higher sonication frequency obtains uniform and smaller nano-sized coordination polymers which have higher catalytic efficiencies.

Construction of (3,8)-connected three-dimensional cobalt(II) and copper(II) coordination polymers with 1,3-bis[(1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)methyl]benzene and benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate ligands

Coordination polymers (CPs) have been widely studied because of their diverse and adjustable topologies and wide-ranging applications in luminescence, chemical sensors, magnetism, photocatalysis, gas adsorption and separation. In the present work, two coordination polymers, namely poly[(μ5-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylato-κ6 O 1:O 1′:O 3:O 3:O 5,O 5′){μ3-1,3-bis[(1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)methyl]benzene-κ3 N:N′:N′′}di-μ3-hydroxido-dicobalt(II)], [Co2(C9H3O6)(OH)(C12H12N6)] n or [Co2(btc)(OH)(mtrb)] n , (1), and poly[[diaquabis(μ3-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylato-κ3 O 1:O 3:O 5)bis{μ3-1,3-bis[(1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)methyl]benzene-κ3 N:N′:N′′}tetra-μ3-hydroxido-tetracopper(II)] monohydrate], {[Cu4(C9H3O6)2(OH)2(C12H12N6)2(H2O)2]·H2O} n or {[Cu4(btc)2(OH)2(mtrb)2(H2O)2]·H2O} n , (2), were synthesized by the hydrothermal method using 1,3-bis[(1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)methyl]benzene (mtrb) and benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (btc3−). CP (1) exhibits a (3,8)-coordinated three-dimensional (3D) network of the 3,8T38 topological type, with a point symbol of {4,5,6}2{42·56·616·72·82}, based on the tetranuclear hydroxide cobalt(II) cluster [Co4(μ3-OH)2]. CP (2) shows a (3,8)-coordinated tfz-d topology, with a point symbol of {43}2{46·618·84}, based on the tetranuclear hydroxide copper(II) cluster [Cu4(μ3-OH)2]. The different (3,8)-coordinated 3D networks based on tetranuclear hydroxide–metal clusters of (1) and (2) are controlled by the different central metal ions [CoII for (1) and CuII for (2)]. The thermal stabilities and solid-state optical diffuse-reflection spectra were measured. The energy band gaps (E g) obtained for (1) and (2) were 2.72 and 2.29 eV, respectively. CPs (1) and (2) exhibit good photocatalytic degradation of the organic dyes methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB) under visible-light irradiation.

From Simplicity to Complexity in Grafting Dawson-Type Polyoxometalates on Porphyrin, Leading to the Formation of New Organic-Inorganic Hybrids for the Investigation of Third-Order Optical Nonlinearities

Four new organic-inorganic hybrids, [N(C₄H₉)₄]₅H[{HNC₂O(CH₂O)₃P₂V₃W₁₅O₅₉}C₄₄N₄H₂₉O₃] (TPPOH-1POM), [N(C₄H₉)₄]₁₀H₂[{HNC₂O(CH₂O)₃P₂V₃W₁₅O₅₉}₂C₄₄N₄H₂₈O₂] (TPPOH-2POM trans), [N(C₄H₉)₄]₁₀H₂[{HNC₂O(CH₂O)₃P₂V₃W₁₅O₅₉}₂C₄₄N₄H₂₈O₂] (TPPOH-2POM cis), and [N(C₄H₉)₄]₁₅H₃[{HNC₂O(CH₂O)₃P₂W₁₅V₃O₅₉}₃C₄₄N₄H₂₇O] (TPPOH-3POM), have been synthesized by covalently grafting the Dawson-type polyoxometalate (POM) [N(C₄H₉)₄]₅[H₄P₂W₁₅V₃O₆₂] onto new porphyrins N-[1,3-dihydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)propan-2-yl]-4-[10,15,20-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin-5-yl]benzamide (TPPOH-1Tris), 4,4'-[5,15-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin-10,20-diyl]bis[ N-[1,3-dihydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)propan-2-yl]benzamide] (TPPOH-2Tris trans), 4,4'-[10,15-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin-5,20-diyl]bis[ N-[1,3-dihydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)propan-2-yl]benzamide] (TPPOH-2Tris cis). and 4,4',4″-[20-(4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin-5,10,15-triyl]tris[ N-[1,3-dihydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)propan-2-yl]benzamide] (TPPOH-3Tris), respectively, in N, N-dimethylacetamide under nitrogen. The hybrid compounds were thoroughly characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, NMR (¹H, 2D NOESY, ³¹P, and ⁵¹V), ESI-MS, MALDI-TOF-MS, UV-vis, and fluorescence spectroscopy. All porphyrins and their corresponding hybrids exhibited remarkable third-order nonlinear-optical responses under laser irradiation, with the intensity of light at focus E₀ being 4.2 μJ at wavelength 532 nm, pulse duration τ = 6 ns, and repetition rate 10 Hz. The molecular second hyperpolarizability (γ) values of the hybrids (TPPOH-1POM, TPPOH-2POM trans, TPPOH-2POM cis, TPPOH-3POM) were calculated to be 8.48 × 10^-28 esu, 8.94 × 10^-28 esu, 10.16 × 10^-28 esu, and 8.93 × 10^-28 esu, while the molecular second hyperpolarizability (γ) of their corresponding porphyrin precursors (TPPOH-1Tris, TPPOH-2Tris trans, TPPOH-2Tris cis, and TPPOH-3Tris) were 7.19 × 10^-28 esu, 8.09 × 10^-28 esu, 9.07 × 10^-28 esu, and 7.24 × 10^-28 esu, respectively. The γ values of the cis forms were found to be superior to those of all other compounds, indicating the significant role of the greater dipole moment and low symmetry of the cis form compared to other compounds. It was also found that the fluorescence intensity was decreased by 81.52%, 90.37%, 93.93%, and 84.62% for the hybrids TPPOH-1POM, TPPOH-2POM trans, TPPOH-2POM cis, and TPPOH-3POM with respect to their corresponding precursors, respectively, which reveals the Dawson-type POM as a strong quencher. This quenching phenomenon not only indicates again unequivocally the formation of hybrid compounds but also may imply a photoinduced electron/energy-transfer process favored from a porphyrin moiety to a Dawson-type POM moiety.

Syntheses and photocatalytic properties of three new d10-based coordination polymers: effects of metal centres and ancillary ligands

Three d¹⁰-based coordination polymers with three different nitrogen-based ancillary ligands have been synthesized and their photocatalytic properties were explored in the decomposition of methyl violet.

The utilization of a stable 2D bilayer MOF for simultaneous study of luminescent and photocatalytic properties: experimental studies and theoretical analysis

A new Pb(ii)-based 2D MOF comprising π-conjugated ligand 4'-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-3,5-dicarboxylic acid (TZBPDC) and having the formula {[PbNa(TZBPDC)](H2O)(DMF)2} n (1) has been synthesized. Structural characterization of 1 indicates that the MOF has a 4-connected (4,4) motif. The photoluminescent investigation indicates that 1 can behave as potential luminescent sensor for the detection of nitroaromatic compounds (NACs), especially 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP) and ferric ions, through the decrease in its luminescence intensity. Additionally, 1 also displays excellent capacity for the photodegradation of methylene orange (MO), which is a constituent of wastewater discharge. The most plausible mechanisms for the decrease in the luminescent intensity of 1 in the presence of different NACs have been explored though theoretical calculations, and the photocatalysis of 1 for organic dyes has been addressed using density of states (DOS) and partial DOS calculations.

Assembly of a series of coordination polymers built from rigid a tetracarboxylate ligand and flexible bis(imidazole) linker: syntheses, structural diversities, luminescence sensing, and photocatalytic properties

Hydrothermal reactions of aromatic terphenyl-4,2'',5'',4'-tetracarboxylic acid (H₄tta) and transitional metal cations in the presence of two flexible N-donor ancillary ligands afforded four novel coordination polymers, namely, {[Zn(tta)_0.5(m-bimb)]·H₂O}_n (1), [Ni₂(tta)(m-bimb)₂(H₂O)]_n (2), [Ni(H₂tta)(o-bimb)·H₂O]_n (3), and [Cd(tta)_0.5(o-bimb)]_n (4), from solvothermal reactions in the presence of bis(imidazole) bridging linkers (m-bimb = 1,3-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene, and o-bimb = 1,2-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene). Their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and further characterized by elemental analyses (EA), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and thermogravimetric (TG) analyses. Compound 1 displayed a 2-fold 3D → 3D parallel entangled (4,4)-connected bbf net with the point symbol of (6⁴·8²)(6⁶)₂. Compound 2 featured a predocumented 3D (4,8)-connected (3²·5³·6)(3⁴·4⁴·5⁹·6¹¹) net. Compound 3 exhibited a 2D 4-connected sql sheet with the point symbol of (4⁴·6²), and compound 4 showed a 2D 4-connected (3²·6²·7²) kgm sheet. To our delight, fluorescence measurements showed that compound 1 could selectively and sensitively detect Cr³⁺ cations and nitrobenzene derivatives (nitrobenzene (NB), p-nitrotoluene (PNT), and p-nitroaniline (PNA)), which suggested that CPs of 1 was a promising bifunctional luminescence sensor material that could sense metal ions and small organic molecules. Moreover, 1 showed excellent photocatalytic activity.

Two 3D ZnII Metal–Organic Frameworks with 3- and 8-Fold Interpenetration: Syntheses, Structures, Photodegradation, and Photoluminescent Properties

Two novel coordination polymers, namely {[Zn(sbdc)(bmib)]·0.4H2O}n (1) and {[Zn(sbdc)(bibd)]·DMF}n (2) (H2sbdc = 4,4′-stilbenedicarboxylic, bmib = 1,4-bis(2-methylimidazol-1-yl)butane, bibd = 1,1′-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole), DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), have been acquired under solvothermal conditions, and have been characterised by elemental analysis, infrared spectra, thermogravimetric analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD). Single-crystal XRD analysis reveals that 1 shows eight-fold interpenetrating 3D frameworks with a four-connected (66) sqc6 topology and 2 displays four-connected three-fold interpenetrating 3D frameworks. The flexible N-donor ligands play an important role in the construction of the final topological structures for 1 and 2. Furthermore, 1 and 2 exhibit good photodegradation capability and photoluminescence properties.
