Polytorsional-amide/carboxylates-directed Cd(ii) coordination polymers exhibiting multi-functional sensing behaviors

By rational assembly of polytorsional-amide [N,N′-bis(4-methylenepyridin-4-yl)-1,4-naphthalene dicarboxamide (L)] and polytorsional-carboxylates [H₂ADI = adipic acid, H₂PIM = pimelic acid, H₂SUB = suberic acid], three new Cd-based coordination polymers (CPs) C₃₀H₃₀CdN₄O₇ (1), C₃₁H₃₂CdN₄O₇ (2) and C_31.03H_30.55CdCl_0.24N₄O_5.52 (3) were successfully synthesized. CPs 1–2 and 3 are 2D networks and a 3D framework, which all display 3,5-connected topologies with different structural details. The effects of carboxylates with different carbon chains on the structure of the complexes were studied. Fluorescence experiments show that CPs 1–3 have good multi-functional sensing ability for metal cations (Fe³⁺), anions (MnO₄⁻, CrO₄²⁻, Cr₂O₇²⁻) and organochlorine pesticides (2,6-dichloro-4-nitroamine) with good anti-interference and recyclable characteristics. The possible sensing mechanism is also investigated in detail.

Crystal Structures, Photoluminescence, and Magnetism of Two Novel Transition-Metal Complex Cocrystals with Three-Dimensional H-Bonding Organic Framework or Alternating Noncovalent Anionic and Cationic Layers

Cocrystallization may alter material physicochemical properties; thus, the strategy of forming a cocrystal is generally used to improve the material performance for practical applications. In this study, two transition-metal complex cocrystals [Zn(bpy)₃]H_0.5BDC·H_1.5BDC·0.5bpy·3H₂O (1) and [Cu₂(BDC)(bpy)₄]BDC·bpy·2H₂O (2) have been achieved using a hydrothermal reaction, where bpy and H₂BDC represent 2,2'-bipyridine and benzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid, respectively. Cocrystals were characterized by microanalysis, infrared spectroscopy, and UV-visible spectroscopy. Cocrystal 1 contains five components and crystallizes in a monoclinic space group P2₁/n. The H_0.5BDC^1.5-, H_1.5BDC^0.5-, and H₂O molecules construct three-dimensional H-bonding organic framework; the [Zn(bpy)₃]²⁺ coordination cations and uncoordinated bpy molecules reside in channels, where two coordinated bpy ligands in [Zn(bpy)₃]²⁺ and one uncoordinated bpy adopt sandwich-type alignment via π···π stacking interactions. Cocrystal 2 with four components crystallizes in a triclinic space group P-1 to form alternating layers; the binuclear [Cu₂(bpy)₄(BDC)]²⁺ cations and uncoordinated bpy molecules build the cationic layers, and the BDC^2- species with disordered lattice water molecules form the anionic layers. Cocrystal 1 shows intense photoluminescence at an ambient condition with a quantum yield of 14.96% and decay time of 0.48 ns, attributed to the π* → π electron transition within phenyl/pyridyl rings, and 2 exhibits magnetic behavior of an almost isolated spin system with rather weak antiferromagnetic coupling in the [Cu₂(bpy)₄(BDC)]²⁺ cation.

Homo- and heterometallic luminescent 2-D stilbene metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can provide a matrix for the assembly of organic chromophores into well-defined geometries, allowing for tuning of the material properties and study of structure-property relationships. Here, we report on the effect of the coordinated metal ion on the luminescence properties of eight isostructural MOFs having the formula M(1)2M(2)L3(DMF)2 (M(1) = M(2) = Zn (1), Cd (2), Mn (3), Co (4); M(1) = Zn, M(2) = Cd (5), Mn (6), Co (7); M(1) = Co, M(2) = Mn (8); L = trans-4,4'-stilbene dicarboxylate), synthesized by reaction of the appropriate metal nitrate or mixtures of metal nitrates with LH2 in DMF. The crystal structures of 2, 3 and 5-8 were determined by X-ray diffraction to be composed of trinuclear metal clusters linked by stilbene dicarboxylate linkers in a paddlewheel geometry, extending to form a 2-D layered structure. In the mixed-metal cases, the larger metal ion was found to occupy the octahedral site in the cluster while the smaller ion occupies the tetrahedral positions, suggesting a selective, ligand-directed assembly process for the mixed-metal species. Variable temperature magnetic measurements for paramagnetic MOFs 3 and 6-8 were consistent with the site occupancies determined crystallographically, and indicated weak intra-cluster antiferromagnetic coupling for 3 and 8. Comparison between the crystal structures of 2, 3 and 5-8 and those reported for 1 and 4 in the literature reveal close resemblances between linker environments, with important intermolecular stilbene-stilbene geometries that are comparable in all cases. Interestingly, pale-colored 1-3 and 5-7 display very similar emission profiles upon excitation at λ(ex) = 350 nm, whereas dark-colored 4 and 8 do not exhibit detectable emission spectra. The bright, well-resolved luminescence of 1, 2 and 5 is ascribed to rigidification of the linker upon coordination to the d(10) metal ions, whereas the weaker emission observed for 3, 6 and 7 is presumably a result of quenching due to close proximity of the linker to one or more paramagnetic ions. Time-resolved measurements for 1, 2, 5 and 6 reveal biexponential emission decays, where the lifetime of the longer-lived state corresponds to observed variations in the nearest-neighbor cofacial stilbene-stilbene distances in their crystal structures. For 3, a monoexponential decay with shorter lifetime was determined, indicating significant paramagnetic quenching of its emissive state.

Isolation of two different Ni2Zn complexes with an unprecedented cocrystal formed by one of them and a "coordination positional isomer" of the other

A new homometallic trinuclear Ni(II) complex [(NiL)2Ni(NCS)2] (1) and three heterometallic trinuclear Ni(II)-Zn(II)-Ni(II) complexes [(NiL)2Zn(NCS)2] (2), [(NiL)2Zn(NCS)2(CH3OH)2]·2CH3OH (3) and {[(NiL)2Zn(NCS)2(CH3OH)2]} {[(NiL)2Zn(NCS)2]} (4) have been synthesized by using the "complex as ligand" approach with the "metalloligand" [NiL] (H2L = N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine) and thiocyanate in different ratios. All the complexes have been structurally and magnetically characterized. In the isomorphous complexes 1 and 2, the two terminal square planar Ni atoms and the central octahedral nickel atom (in 1) or zinc atom (in 2) are arranged in a bent structure where two cis κN-SCN(-) thiocyanate ions are coordinated to the central atom. The chemical composition of 3 is very similar to that of 2 but, in 3, the central Zn atom is tetrahedral and the κN-SCN(-) thiocyanate ions occupy an axial position of each terminal nickel atom (which now are octahedral with the sixth position occupied by a methanol molecule). Complex 4 consists of two closely related trinuclear units 4A and 4B. In 4A, the coordination environments of the metals are identical to those of 3 whereas 4B is a "coordination position isomer" of complex 2 with the central square pyramidal Zn and one of the terminal square pyramidal Ni atoms coordinated by two κN-SCN(-) thiocyanate ions. Complex 4 is a unique example of a cocrystal formed by two similar trinuclear units (4A and 4B) where 4A is identical to an existing complex (3) and 4B is a "coordination position isomer" of another existing complex (2).
