Embedding Lanthanide Organic Polyhedra into Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles for the Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes

Organic pollutants cause severe environmental problems because of their damage to human health and ecological systems. Photocatalytic degradation of persistent organic pollutants is of great importance to address these hazards. Herein, we report a lanthanide organic polyhedra-based hybrid material Gd₈ L₁₂ ⊂MSN with the capability of photocatalytic dye degradation. Gd₈ L₁₂ ⊂MSN was prepared by embedding the Gd₈ L₁₂ complex into mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) using a "ship-in-a-bottle" strategy. Photocurrent response tests revealed that this hybrid material is a potential semiconductor and could generate a rapid and steady photocurrent upon irradiation. Further dye degradation experiments indicated that it could photocatalyze the degradation of familiar organic dyes. Thereinto, compared with the critical Gd₈ L₁₂ complex, the hybrid material exhibited an acceleration of 2.4 times and realized reusability. This not only offers a potential advanced photocatalyst for degrading persistent organic pollutants, but also provides a strategy for the application of supramolecular materials in environmental science.

Cd2+ and Zn2+ Complexes with 2,4,6-Tri(2-pyridyl)-s-Triazine and Terephthalate for Rapid, High-Capacity Adsorption of Congo Red

Three crystal complexes were designed and synthesised through the solvothermal method, with Cu²⁺ , Zn²⁺ , and Cd²⁺ ions as the metal centres and 2,4,6-tri(2-pyridyl)-s-triazine (TPTZ) and terephthalate (BDC^2- ) as the ligands. Their compositions were determined to be Cd(TPTZ)Cl₂ (Cd-MOF), {[Zn(TPTZ)(BDC)] ⋅ 3H₂ O}_n (Zn-MOF), and Cu₂ (PCA)₂ (BDC)(H₂ O)₂ (Cu-MOF) (PCA^- =2-pyridinium amide), respectively. Cd-MOF can adsorb 90 % of Congo red (CR) in 10 s at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, and CR removal was complete at 20 s over a wide pH range. The adsorption capacity for CR reached 1440 mg g^-1 in 5 min. Selective adsorption was demonstrated in mixed dyes. The adsorption kinetic data agree well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The Temkin model was successfully used to evaluate the adsorption isotherms of CR on Cd-MOF at room temperature, suggesting that adsorption occurs through a hybrid of monolayer and multilayer mechanisms.

Metal-organic cages against toxic chemicals and pollutants

The continuous release of toxic chemicals and pollutants into the atmosphere and natural waters threatens, directly and indirectly, human health, the sustainability of the planet, and the future of society. Materials capable of capturing or chemically inactivating hazardous substances, which are harmful to humans and the environment, are critical in the modern age. Metal-organic cages (MOCs) show great promise as materials against harmful agents both in solution and in solid state. This Highlight features examples of MOCs that selectively encapsulate, adsorb, or remove from a medium noxious gases, toxic organophosphorus compounds, water pollutant oxoanions, and some emerging organic contaminants. Remarkably, the toxicity of interacting contaminants may be lowered by MOCs as well. Specific cases pertaining to the use of these cages for the chemical degradation of some harmful substances are presented. This Highlight thus aims to provide an overview of the possibilities of MOCs in this area and new methodological insights into their operation for enhancing their activity and the engineering of further remediation applications.

Synthesis of a 2D copper(II)-carboxylate framework having ultrafast adsorption of organic dyes

Two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymers are very interesting materials for their attractive applications. A novel 2D metal-organic framework (MOF) was derived from copper(II) and amino benzoic acid under both room temperature and solvothermal reaction conditions using different solvents. From both of the synthesis methods, an identical MOF was crystalized with monoclinic crystal system having P2₁/c space group. Hirshfeld surface analysis is carried out to explore the non-covalent interactions obtained from single crystal XRD investigation in terms of percentage contribution of each interatomic contact involved in packing of molecules into MOF structure. The microstructure analysis and surface morphology studies revealed the 2D layered regular pattern of rhombus disks of ~5 μm thickness throng together via clustering of these rhombic shaped flakes as flowers (ranging 50-100 μm in size) having uniform elemental composition. This 2D MOF efficiently adsorbed organic dyes (methylene blue, methyl orange, and methyl red) from their aqueous solutions. The 2D copper-carboxylate framework (1.2 g/L) exhibited high adsorption rates for organic dyes (0.15-0.19 mM), and >90% of these dyes could be captured as soon as they are exposed to MOF suspension (1 min) in each case. The dye removal efficiency is credited to synergy among structure, ionic strength, shapes and dimensions of dyes with respect to MOF structure. The microstructure of MOF along with electronic interactions like electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, π-π interactions and coordination to open metal sites, might contribute to the ultrafast dye adsorption process by MOF. The adsorption phenomenon is spontaneous and followed the pseudo-second order kinetic mechanism. DFT calculations revealed important electronic parameters of the dyes and model MOF systems, and novel insights with respect to possible dye-MOF interactions. The MOF remained quite stable during the dye adsorption and was regenerated easily for the successful subsequent use.

Heterometal-Organic Cages as Photo-Fenton-like Catalysts

Metal-organic cages, a class of supramolecular containers constructed by the self-assembly of metal ions and organic ligands, show great promise as catalytic agents. In this work, we designed and synthesized a series of rhombic dodecahedral Ni-Cu heterometal imidazolate cages (Ni₈Cu₆L₂₄) that can act as highly active photo-Fenton-like catalysts. These cages possess a high ability to generate hydroxyl radicals (^•OH) under visible light in the presence of H₂O₂, which can rapidly degrade organic pollutants (e.g., rhodamine B, methylene blue, and methyl orange) into CO₂ and H₂O. Besides, they are robust catalysts, with high catalytic activity and reusability under conditions in high H₂O₂ concentration, providing potentially advanced materials for degrading persistent organic pollutants.

The rise of metal-organic polyhedra

Metal-organic polyhedra are a member of metal-organic materials, and are together with metal-organic frameworks utilized as emerging porous platforms for numerous applications in energy- and bio-related sciences. However, metal-organic polyhedra have been significantly underexplored, unlike their metal-organic framework counterparts. In this review, we will cover the topologies and the classification of metal-organic polyhedra and share several suggestions, which might be useful to synthetic chemists regarding the future directions in this rapid-growing field.

Porous Metal-Organic Polyhedra: Morphology, Porosity, and Guest Binding

Designing porous materials which can selectively adsorb CO₂ or CH₄ is an important environmental and industrial goal which requires an understanding of the host–guest interactions involved at the atomic scale. Metal–organic polyhedra (MOPs) showing permanent porosity upon desolvation are rarely observed. We report a family of MOPs (Cu-1a, Cu-1b, Cu-2), which derive their permanent porosity from cavities between packed cages rather than from within the polyhedra. Thus, for Cu-1a, the void fraction outside the cages totals 56% with only 2% within. The relative stabilities of these MOP structures are rationalized by considering their weak nondirectional packing interactions using Hirshfeld surface analyses. The exceptional stability of Cu-1a enables a detailed structural investigation into the adsorption of CO₂ and CH₄ using in situ X-ray and neutron diffraction, coupled with DFT calculations. The primary binding sites for adsorbed CO₂ and CH₄ in Cu-1a are found to be the open metal sites and pockets defined by the faces of phenyl rings. More importantly, the structural analysis of a hydrated sample of Cu-1a reveals a strong hydrogen bond between the adsorbed CO₂ molecule and the Cu(II)-bound water molecule, shedding light on previous empirical and theoretical observations that partial hydration of metal−organic framework (MOF) materials containing open metal sites increases their uptake of CO₂. The results of the crystallographic study on MOP–gas binding have been rationalized using DFT calculations, yielding individual binding energies for the various pore environments of Cu-1a.

Robust Nanoporous Supramolecular Network Through Charge-Transfer Interaction

A robust nanoporous supramolecular network stabilized by charge-transfer interactions has been successfully constructed based on bipyridinium and bicarboxylic acid with electron-donating hydroxyl pendant groups, which exhibit high durability toward extensive acid/base condition (pH: 2-12), organic solvents, and the plucking of metal ions. Furthermore, the separation capacity toward rhodamine B and other dyes with the same charge and smaller molecular sizes has been realized in it.

A polyoxometalate-based metal–organic polyhedron constructed from a {V5O9Cl} building unit with rhombicuboctahedral geometry

The design and construction of metal–organic polyhedra has received much attention by chemists due to the intriguing diversity of architectures and topologies that can be achieved. There are several crucial factors which should be considered for the construction of metal–organic polyhedra, such as the starting materials, reaction time and temperature, solvent and suitable organic ligands. Recently, polyoxometalates (POMs), serving as secondary building units to construct POM-based metal–organic polyhedra, have been the subject of much interest. The title compound, dodecakis(dimethylammonium) octakis(μ-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylato)hexa-μ-chlorido-tetracosa-μ-oxido-triacontaoxidotriacontavanadium, (NH2Me2)12[(V5O9Cl)6(C9H3O6)8], was synthesized successfully by self-assembly of VOCl3 and benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid under solvothermal conditions. The title polyhedron has an rdo topology when the {V5O9Cl} building unit and the benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (BTC3−) ligand were simplified into 4-connected and 3-connected vertices. Interestingly, when the {V5O9Cl} building unit and the BTC3− ligand are considered as quadrangular and triangular faces, the structure displays rhombicuboctahedral geometry with an outer diameter of 21.88 Å. The packing of the polyhedra produces a circular channel with a diameter of 8.2 Å. The title compound was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and powder X-ray diffraction.

Functionalized polyoxometalate-based metal-organic cuboctahedra for selective adsorption toward cationic dyes in aqueous solution

Two functionalized polyoxovanadate-based metal-organic polyhedra with heterocube formations are synthesized under solvothermal conditions. The structures of VMOP-18 and VMOP-19 display similar cuboctahedral geometries when the polyoxovanadate {V6O6(OCH3)9X(COO)3}n- (X = VO4, n = 1; SO4, n = 2) building units and organic ligands are considered as triangular faces of the polyhedra. Each cuboctahedron was surrounded by eight neighbouring cuboctahedra via strong C-Hπ interactions, leading to a 3D open supramolecular structure. Furthermore, the absorption ability toward the ionic dyes of VMOP-18 was investigated. Only cationic dyes can be absorbed into the cavity of VMOP-18, which indicates that the cationic dye absorption process is an ion-exchange process.

Metal(II) Coordination Polymers Derived from Mixed 4-Imidazole Ligands and Carboxylates: Syntheses, Topological Structures, and Properties

Four new metal⁻organic coordination polymers [Cu(L)(mpa)]·3H₂O (1), [Co(L)(mpa)]·H₂O (2), [Zn(L)(mpa)]·H₂O (3), and [Cd(L)(mpa)(H₂O)]·H₂O (4) were synthesized by reactions of the corresponding metal(II) salts based on mixed ligands of 1,4-di(1H-imidazol-4-yl)benzene (L) and 4-methylphthalic acid (H₂mpa), respectively. The structures of the complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 exhibits a binodal 4-connected three dimensional (3D) architecture with (6⁵·8)-CdSO₄ topology, while complexes 2 and 3 are isostructural and have two-dimensional (2D) layer structure with (4, 4) sql topology based on the binuclear metal subunits. Complex 4 has the same 2D layer structure with (4, 4) sql topology as complexes 2 and 3, but the inclined interpenetration of parallel sets of layers result in the formation with 2D + 2D → 3D framework. The activated sample 1 shows selective CO₂ uptake over N₂. The photoluminiscent properties together with quantum yield (QY) and luminescence lifetime are also investigated for complexes 3 and 4 in the solid state at room temperature.

The influence of structural isomerism on fluorescence and organic dye selective adsorption in two complexes based on flexible ligands

Based on Cd(NO₃)₂·4H₂O and 4,4'-((5-carboxy-1,3-phenylene)bis(oxy))dibenzoic acid (H₃cpbda), two isomeric coordination polymers, {[Cd_1.5(cpbda)(bpa)(H₂O)₂]·1.5H₂O}_n (1), [Cd(H₂cpbda)₂(bpa)_0.5(H₂O)]_n (2), were synthesized by using different solvent-systems. The complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. Owing to the obvious structural difference between the two isomeric complexes, the further fluorescence sensing and dye selection and adsorption were investigated. The 3D tight stacking structure of 1 strengthened the fluorescence emission and the loose 2D layer structure of 2 generated the active selection and adsorption of the Malachite Green Oxalate (MGO) dye.
