Abstract
The surface activity of surfactant mixtures is critically analyzed. Cat-anionic systems, in which two ionic species are mixed in non-stoichiometric ratios, are considered. With respect to the solution behavior, where a substantial decrease of cmc is met compared to the pure components, a moderate effect on surface tension, γ, occurs. Compared to the pure species, the decrease of surface tension for such mixtures is not significant, and no clear dependence on the mole fraction anionic/cationic is met. The surface tension is grossly constant in the whole concentration range. Conversely, the interaction parameter for surfaces, βsurf (calculated by the regular solution theory), is more negative than that for micelle formation, βmic. This fact suggests that the desolvation of polar heads of the two species at interfaces is largely different. Very presumably, the underlying rationale finds origin in the sizes and solvation of both polar head groups.

Abstract
Wide-dose-range 2D radiochromic films for radiotherapy, such as GAFchromic EBT, are based on the lithium salt of 10,12-pentacosadiynoic acid (Li-PCDA) as the photosensitive component. We show that there are two solid forms of Li-PCDA-a monohydrated form A and an anhydrous form B. The form used in commercial GAFchromic films is form A due to its short needle-shaped crystals, which provide favorable coating properties. Form B provides an enhanced photoresponse compared to that of form A, but adopts a long needle crystal morphology, which is difficult to process. The two forms were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, CP-MAS 13C solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. In sum, these data suggest a chelating bridging bidentate coordination mode for the lithium ions. The sodium salt of PCDA (Na-PCDA) is also reported, which is an ionic cocrystal with a formula of Na+PCDA-·3PCDA. The PCDA and PCDA- ligands display monodentate and bridging bidentate coordination to the sodium ion in contrast to the coordination sphere of the Li-PCDA forms. In contrast to its lithium analogues, Na-PCDA is photostable.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS The insertion of polyether spacers between the anionic head and the alkyl chain of ionic surfactants significantly improves their salt-tolerance. The aim of this work is to study whether the petro-based polyethoxy spacer can be replaced by a glyceryl ether group for high salinity applications. EXPERIMENTS A series of amphiphilic sodium salts of alkyl glyceryl ether carboxylates are synthesized with different alkyl chain lengths from 4 to 12 and various spacers between the glyceryl and the carboxylate groups. Their aggregation behavior is studied by tensiometry and their amphiphilicities are assessed by the PIT-slope method. The dramatic effect of the methylation of the glyceryl spacer on the salt-tolerance is highlighted, and rationalized by DFT calculations and molecular dynamics. FINDINGS In contrast to the corresponding sodium soap, n-C6H13-CO2Na, and to the non-methylated counterpart, the sodium salt of 1-pentyl-3-methyl glyceryl ether methylene carboxylate ([5.0.1]-CH2CO2Na) exhibits an excellent salt-tolerance since it remains water-soluble with NaCl or CaCl2 concentrations greater than 20 wt% at 25 °C. Amphiphiles with short alkyl chains (<C8) act as hydrotropes whereas longer compounds behave as surfactants whose CMC are lower than their corresponding isomers with ethoxy spacers n-Ci(EO)2CH2CO2Na.

Abstract
On the basis of dynamic interfacial tension measurements, Ca2+ has been shown specifically to interact with naphthenic acid (NA) at the n-heptane/water interface, consistent with NA adsorption followed by interfacial complexation and formation of a more ordered interfacial film. Optimum concentrations of Ca2+ and NA have been found to yield lower, time-dependent interfacial tensions, not evident for Mg2+ and Sr2+ or for several alkali metal ions studied. The results reflect the specific hydration and coordination chemistry of Ca2+ seen in biology. Owing to the ubiquitous presence of Ca2+ in oilfield waters, this finding has potential relevance to the surface chemistry underlying crude oil recovery. For example, “locking” acidic components at water/oil interfaces may be important for crude oil emulsion stability, or in bonding bulk oil to mineral surfaces through an aqueous phase, potentially relevant for carbonate reservoirs. The relevance of the present results to low salinity waterflooding as an enhanced crude oil recovery technique is also discussed.

Abstract
Calcium plays an important role in intestinal lipid digestion by increasing the lipolysis rate, but also limits fatty acid bioaccessibility by producing insoluble Ca soaps with long-chain fatty acids at intestinal pH conditions. The aim of this study was to better understand the effect of Ca on the bioaccessibility of milk fat from Cheddar-type cheeses. Three anhydrous milk fats (AMF) with different fatty acid profiles (olein, stearin, or control AMF) were used to prepare Cheddar-type cheeses, which were then enriched or not with Ca using CaCl2 during the salting step. The cheeses were digested in vitro, and their disintegration and lipolysis rates were monitored during the process. At the end of digestion, lipids were extracted under neutral and acidic pH conditions to compare free fatty acids under intestinal conditions in relation to total fatty acids released during the digestion process. The cheeses prepared with the stearin (the AMF with the highest ratio of long-chain fatty acids) were more resistant to disintegration than the other cheeses, owing to the high melting temperature of that AMF. The Ca-enriched cheeses had faster lipolysis rates than the regular Ca cheeses. Chromatographic analysis of the digestion products showed that Ca interacted with long-chain fatty acids, producing Ca soaps, whereas no interaction with shorter fatty acids was detected. Although higher Ca levels resulted in faster lipolysis rates, driven by the depletion of reaction products as Ca soaps, such insoluble compounds are expected to reduce the bioavailability of fatty acids by hindering their absorption. These effects on lipid digestion and absorption are of interest for the design of food matrices for the controlled release of fat-soluble nutrients or bioactive molecules.

Abstract
Much stronger binding is seen in aqueous solutions between the anionic polyelectrolyte potassium poly(vinyl sulfate) and the substitution labile aluminium(III) than with the kinetically inert chromium(III). This strongly supports the idea that entropy driven water loss from the hydration sphere of the metal ion plays a major role in driving binding of the trivalent metal ion to the polyelectrolyte.
