Intersystem Crossing Control of the Nb+ + CO2 → NbO+ + CO Reaction

The transfer of an oxygen atom from carbon dioxide (CO2) to a transition metal cation in the gas phase offers atomic level insights into single-atom catalysis for CO2 activation. Given that these reactions often involve open-shell transition metals, they may proceed through intersystem crossing between different spin manifolds. However, a definitive understanding of such spin-forbidden reaction requires dynamical calculations on multiple global potential energy surfaces (PESs) coupled by spin-orbit couplings. In this work, we report global PESs and spin-orbit couplings for three low-lying spin (quintet, triplet, and singlet) states for the reaction between the niobium cation (Nb+) and CO2, which are used to investigate the nonadiabatic reaction dynamics and kinetics. Comparison with experimental data of kinetics and collision dynamics shows satisfactory agreement. This reaction is found to be very similar to that between Ta+ + CO2. Specifically, our theoretical findings suggest that the rate-limiting step in this reaction is intersystem crossing, rather than potential barriers.

Spectroscopic investigation of size-dependent CO2 binding on cationic copper clusters: analysis of the CO2 asymmetric stretch

Photofragmentation spectroscopy, combined with quantum chemical computations, was employed to investigate the position of the asymmetric CO2 stretch in cold, He-tagged Cun[CO2]+ (n = 1-10) and Cun[CO2][H2O]+ (n = 1-7) complexes. A blue shift in the band position was observed compared to the free CO2 molecule for Cun[CO2]+ complexes. Furthermore, this shift was found to exhibit a notable dependence on cluster size, progressively redshifting with increasing cluster size. The computations revealed that the CO2 binding energy is the highest for Cu+ and continuously decreases with increasing cluster size. This dependency could be explained by highlighting the role of polarization in electronic structure, according to energy decomposition analysis. The introduction of water to this complex amplified the redshift of the asymmetric stretch, showing a similar dependency on the cluster size as observed for Cun[CO2]+ complexes.

Observation of the Transition from Triple Bonds to Single Bonds between Ru-Ge Bonding in RuGeO(CO)n- (n = 3-5)

This work reports the observation and characterization of heterobinuclear transition-metal main-group metal oxide carbonyl complex anions, RuGeO(CO)n- (n = 3-5), by combining mass-selected photoelectron velocity map imaging spectroscopy and quantum chemistry calculations. The experimentally determined vertical electron detachment energy of RuGeO(CO)3- surpasses those of RuGeO(CO)4- and RuGeO(CO)5-, which is attributed to distinctive bonding features. RuGeO(CO)3- manifests one covalent σ and two Ru-to-Ge dative π bonds, contrasting with the sole covalent σ bond present in RuGeO(CO)4- and RuGeO(CO)5-. Unpaired spin density distribution analysis reveals a 17-electron configuration at the Ru center in RuGeO(CO)3- and an 18-electron configuration in RuGeO(CO)4- and RuGeO(CO)5-. This work closes a gap in the quantitative physicochemical characterization of heteronuclear oxide carbonyl complexes, enhancing our insights into catalytic processes of CO/GeO on the metal surface at the molecular level.

Adsorption of Multiple NO Molecules on Anionic Gold Clusters: Electron Transfer and Disproportionation Enhanced by Molecular Aggregation

The reactions of Aun- clusters with multiple nitric oxide (NO) molecules are explored at 150 K by utilizing a mini-flow-tube reactor and a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Adsorption of multiple NO molecules is observed on most Aun-, while disproportionation reactions only occur on even-sized Aun- with n = 4, 6, 8, 20 and odd-sized ones with n = 5 and 7. Theoretical calculations reveal the geometric structures and electronic states of the products containing bimolecular and trimolecular NO units, where two NO molecules typically form dimers. Different from NO monomers that weakly interact with odd-sized Aun- and form electron-sharing covalent bonds with Au10-(D3h) and Au16-, NO dimers can extract significant charge from parent Aun-. Regarding the three NO molecules, a predilection toward condensation into trimers on even-sized Aun- is observed, while the tendency is more toward an adsorption pattern of a dimer plus a monomer on odd-sized Aun-. The NO trimers register even higher charge gain from Aun- as compared with the NO dimers, which leads to an elevated degree of activation and induces the progression of disproportionation reactions. Therefore, when considering the reaction between NO and Aun-, it appears that NO has a propensity to form dimers or trimers on Aun-. This behavior of aggregate formation substantially enhances the ability of NO to absorb negative charges from Aun- although the occurrence of disproportionate dissociation reactions is initiated only for specific sizes.

Conversion of Methane at Room Temperature Mediated by the Ta-Ta σ-Bond

Metal-metal bonds constitute an important type of reactive centers for chemical transformation; however, the availability of active metal-metal bonds being capable of converting methane under mild conditions, the holy grail in catalysis, remains a serious challenge. Herein, benefiting from the systematic investigation of 36 metal clusters of tantalum by using mass spectrometric experiments complemented with quantum chemical calculations, the dehydrogenation of methane at room temperature was successfully achieved by 18 cluster species featuring σ-bonding electrons localized in single naked Ta-Ta centers. In sharp contrast, the other 18 remaining clusters, either without naked Ta-Ta σ-bond or with σ-bonding electrons delocalized over multiple Ta-Ta centers only exhibit molecular CH4-adsorption reactivity or inertness. Mechanistic studies revealed that changing cluster geometric configurations and tuning the number of simple inorganic ligands (e.g., oxygen) could flexibly manipulate the presence or absence of such a reactive Ta-Ta σ-bond. The discovery of Ta-Ta σ-type bond being able to exhibit outstanding activity toward methane conversion not only overturns the traditional recognition that only the metal-metal π- or δ-bonds of early transition metals could participate in bond activation but also opens up a new access to design of promising metal catalysts with dual-atom as reactive sites for chemical transformations.

Reaction of size-selected iron-oxide cluster cations with methane: a model study of rapid methane loss in Mars' atmosphere

We report gas-phase reactions of free iron-oxide clusters, FenOm+, and their Ar adducts with methane in the context of chemical processes in Mars' atmosphere. Methane activation was observed to produce FenOmCH2+/FenOmCD2+ and FenOmC+, where the reactivity exhibited size and composition dependence. For example, the rate coefficients of methane activation for Fe3O+ and Fe4O+ were estimated to be 1 × 10-13 and 3 × 10-13 cm3 s-1, respectively. Based on these reaction rate coefficients, the presence of iron-oxide clusters/particles with a density as low as 107 cm-3 in Mars' atmosphere would explain the rapid loss of methane observed recently by the Curiosity rover.

Multistate Dynamics and Kinetics of CO2 Activation by Ta+ in the Gas Phase: Insights into Single-Atom Catalysis

The activation of carbon dioxide (CO2) by a transition-metal cation in the gas phase is a unique model system for understanding single-atom catalysis. The mechanism of such reactions is often attributed to a "two-state reactivity" model in which the high-energy barrier of a spin state correlating with ground-state reactants is avoided by intersystem crossing (ISC) to a different spin state with a lower barrier. However, such a "spin-forbidden" mechanism, along with the corresponding dynamics, has seldom been rigorously examined theoretically, due to the lack of global potential energy surfaces (PESs). In this work, we report full-dimensional PESs of the lowest-lying quintet, triplet, and singlet states of the TaCO2+ system, machine-learned from first-principles data. These PESs and the corresponding spin-orbit couplings enable us to provide an extensive theoretical characterization of the dynamics and kinetics of the reaction between the tantalum cation (Ta+) and CO2, which have recently been investigated experimentally at high collision energies using crossed beams and velocity map imaging, as well as at thermal energies using a selected-ion flow tube apparatus. The multistate quasi-classical trajectory simulations with surface hopping reproduce most of the measured product translational and angular distributions, shedding valuable light on the nonadiabatic reaction dynamics. The calculated rate coefficients from 200 to 600 K are also in good agreement with the latest experimental measurements. More importantly, these calculations revealed that the reaction is controlled by intersystem crossing, rather than potential barriers.

Dynamics of carbene formation in the reaction of methane with the tantalum cation in the gas phase

The controlled activation of methane has drawn significant attention throughout various disciplines over the last few decades. In gas-phase experiments, the use of model systems with reduced complexity compared to condensed-phase catalytic systems allows us to investigate the intrinsic reactivity of elementary reactions down to the atomic level. Methane is rather inert in chemical reactions, as the weakening or cleavage of a C-H bond is required to make use of methane as C1-building block. The simplest model system for transition-metal-based catalysts is a mono-atomic metal ion. Only a few atomic transition-metal cations activate methane at room temperature. One of the most efficient elements is tantalum, which forms a carbene and releases molecular hydrogen in the reaction with methane: Ta+ + CH4 → TaCH2+ + H2. The reaction takes place at room temperature due to efficient intersystem crossing from the quintet to the triplet surface, i.e., from the electronic ground state of the tantalum cation to the triplet ground state of the tantalum carbene. This multi-state reactivity is often seen for reactions involving transition-metal centres, but leads to their theoretical treatment being a challenge even today. Chemical reactions, or to be precise reactive collisions, are dynamic processes making their description even more of a challenge to experiment and theory alike. Experimental energy- and angle-differential cross sections allow us to probe the rearrangement of atoms during a reactive collision. By interpreting the scattering signatures, we gain insight into the atomistic mechanisms and can move beyond stationary descriptions. Here, we present a study combining collision energy dependent experimentally measured differential cross sections with ab initio calculations of the minimum energy pathway. Product ion velocity distributions were recorded using our crossed-beam velocity map imaging experiment dedicated to studying transition-metal ion molecule reactions. TaCH2+ velocity distributions reveal a significant degree of indirect dynamics. However, the scattering distributions also show signatures of rebound dynamics. We compare the present results to the oxygen transfer reaction between Ta+ and carbon dioxide, which we recently studied.

Advances in Naked Metal Clusters for Catalysis

The properties of sub-nano metal clusters are governed by quantum confinement and their large surface-to-bulk ratios, atomically precise compositions and geometric/electronic structures. Advances in metal clusters lead to new opportunities in diverse aspects of sciences including chemo-sensing, bio-imaging, photochemistry, and catalysis. Naked metal clusters having synergic multiple active sites and coordinative unsaturation and tunable stability/activity enable researchers to design atomically precise metal catalysts with tailored catalysis for different reactions. Here we summarize the progress of ligand-free naked metal clusters for catalytic applications. It is anticipated that this review helps to better understand the chemistry of small metal clusters and facilitates the design and development of new catalysts for potential applications.

Reverse water-gas shift catalyzed by RhnVO3,4- (n = 3-7) cluster anions under variable temperatures

A fundamental understanding of the exact structural characteristics and reaction mechanisms of interface active sites is vital to engineering an energetic metal-support boundary in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, benefiting from a newly developed high-temperature ion trap reactor, the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) (CO2 + H2 → CO + H2O) catalyzed by a series of compositionally and structurally well-defined RhnVO3,4- (n = 3-7) clusters were identified under variable temperatures (298-773 K). It is discovered that the Rh5-7VO3,4- clusters can function more effectively to drive RWGS at relatively low temperatures. The experimentally observed size-dependent catalytic behavior was rationalized by quantum-chemical calculations; the framework of RhnVO3,4- is constructed by depositing the Rhn clusters on the VO3,4 "support", and a sandwiched base-acid-base [Rhout--Rhin+-VO3,4-; Rhout and Rhin represent the outer and inner Rh atoms, respectively] feature in Rh5-7VO3,4- governs the adsorption and activation of reactants as well as the facile desorption of the products. In contrast, isolated Rh5-7- clusters without the electronic modification of the VO3,4 "support" can only catalyze RWGS under relatively high-temperature conditions.

Size-dependent reactivity of Rh cationic clusters to reduce NO by CO in the gas phase at high temperatures

The reactivity of the reduction of NO pre-adsorbed on Rh2-9+ clusters by CO was investigated using a combination of an alternate on-off gas injection method and thermal desorption spectrometry. The reduction of RhnNxOy+ clusters by CO was evaluated by varying the CO concentration at T = 903 K. Among the RhnNxOx+ clusters, the Rh3N2O2+ cluster exhibited the highest reduction activity, whereas the other clusters, Rh2,4-9NxOx+, showed lower reactivity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations for Rh3+ and Rh6+ revealed that the rate-determining step for NO reduction in the presence of CO was NO bond dissociation through the kinetics analysis using the RRKM theory. The reduction of Rh3N2O2+ is kinetically preferable to that of Rh6N2O2+. The DFT results were in qualitative agreement with the experimental results.

Adsorption of O2 on the Preferred -O-Au Sites of Small Gold Oxide Clusters: Charge-dependent Interaction and Activation

Decades of research have illuminated the significant roles of gold/gold oxide clusters in small molecule catalytic oxidation. However, many fundamental questions, such as the actual sites to adsorb and activate O2 and the impact of charge, remain unanswered. Here, we have utilized an improved genetic algorithm program coupled with the DFT method to systematically search for the structures of Au1-5Ox-/+/0 (x = 1-4) and calculated binding interactions between Au1-5Ox-/+/0 (x = 1-2) and O2, aiming to determine the active sites and to elucidate the impact of different charge states in gold oxide systems. The results revealed that the reactivity of all three kinds of small gold oxide clusters toward O2 is strongly site-dependent, with clusters featuring an -O-Au site exhibiting a preference for adsorption. The charges on small gold oxide clusters significantly impact the interaction strength and the activation degree of adsorbed O2: in the case of anionic cluster, the interaction between O2 and the -O-Au sites leads to a chemical reaction involving electron transfer, thereby significantly activating O2; in neutral and cationic clusters, the adsorption of O2 on their -O-Au sites can be viewed as an electrostatic interaction. Pointedly, for cationic clusters, the highly concentrated positive charge on the Au atom of the -O-Au sites can strongly adsorb but hardly activate the adsorbed O2. These results have certain reference points for understanding the gold oxide interfaces and the improved catalytic oxidation performance of gold-based systems in the presence of atomic oxygen species.

Reactivity of cationic silver clusters with O2: a probe of interplay between clusters' geometric and electronic structures

We explored the size-dependent reactivity of Agn+ (n = 2-22) with O2 under mild conditions and found that only a few sizes of Agn+, with even values of n = 4, 6, 12, 16, 18, and 22, are reactive. Possible structures of Agn+ (n = 2-22) were determined using a genetic algorithm with incomplete local optimizations at the DFT level, and the calculated bonding strengths of O2 on these structures are consistent with experimental observations. Analyses revealed a close relationship between the reactivity of Agn+ with O2 and its HOMO-LUMO gap: cationic silver clusters with a small HOMO-LUMO gap are reactive, which can be rationalized by the covalent character of chemical bonds between Agn+ and O2 involving their frontier orbitals. The peculiar size-dependent HOMO-LUMO gaps and reactivity with O2 correlate with the subtle interplay between the electronic configurations and geometric structures of these silver cluster cations.

Thermal Reactions of NiAl3O6+ and Al4O6+ with Methane: Reactivity Enhancement by Doping

Investigation of the reactivity of heteronuclear metal oxide clusters is an important way to uncover the molecular-level mechanisms of the doping effect. Herein, we performed a comparative study on the reactions of CH4 with NiAl3O6+ and Al4O6+ cluster cations at room temperature to understand the role of Ni during the activation and transformation of methane. Mass spectrometric experiments identify that both NiAl3O6+ and Al4O6+ could bring about hydrogen atom abstraction reaction to generate CH3• radical; however, only NiAl3O6+ has the potential to stabilize [CH3] moiety and then transform [CH3] to CH2O. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the terminal oxygen radicals (Ot-•) bound to Al act as the reactive sites for the two clusters to activate the first C-H bond. Although the Ni atom cannot directly participate in methane activation, it can manipulate the electronic environment of the surrounding bridging oxygen atoms (Ob) and enable such Ob to function as an electron reservoir to help Ot-• oxidize CH4 to [H-O-CH3]. The facile reduction of Ni3+ to Ni+ also facilitates the subsequent step of activating the second C-H bond by the bridging "lattice oxygen" (Ob2-), finally enabling the oxidation of methane into formaldehyde. The important role of the dopant Ni played in improving the product selectivity of CH2O for methane conversion discovered in this study allows us to have a possible molecule-level understanding of the excellent performance of the catalysts doping with nickel.

Comparison of Cu+, Ag+, and Au+ Ions as Ionization Agents of Volatile Organic Compounds at Subatmospheric Pressure

Ionization of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by coinage metal ions (Cu+, Ag+, and Au+) generated by laser desorption and ionization (LDI) of a metal nanolayer in subatmospheric conditions is explored. The study was performed in a commercial subatmospheric dual MALDI/ESI ion source. Five compounds representing different VOC classes were chosen for a detailed study of the metal ionization mechanism: ethanol, acetone, acetic acid, xylene, and cyclohexane. In the gas phase, ion molecular complexes of all three metal ions were formed, typically with two ligand molecules. The successful detection of the metal complexes with VOCs strongly depended on the applied voltages across the ion source, minimizing the in-source fragmentation. The employed orbital trap with ultrahigh resolving power and sub-parts-per-million mass accuracy allowed unambiguous identification of the formed complexes based on their molecular formulas. The detection limits of the studied compounds in the gas were in the range 0.1-1.4 nmol/L. Compared to Cu+ and Ag+ ions, Au+ ions exhibited the highest reactivity, often complicating spectra by side products of reactions. On the other hand, they also allowed detecting saturated hydrocarbons, which did not produce any signals with Ag+ and Cu+.

CO Oxidation Promoted by NO Adsorption on RhMn2O3- Cluster Anions

CO oxidation represents an important model reaction in the gas phase to provide a clear structure-reactivity relationship in related heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, in combination with mass spectrometry experiments and quantum-chemical calculations, we identified that the RhMn2O3- cluster cannot oxidize CO into gas-phase CO2 at room temperature, while the NO preadsorbed products RhMn2O3-[(NO)1,2] are highly reactive in CO oxidation. This discovery is helpful to get a fundamental understanding on the reaction behavior in real-world three-way catalytic conditions where different kinds of reactants coexist. Theoretical calculations were performed to rationalize the crucial roles of preadsorbed NO where the strongly attached NO on the Rh atom can greatly stabilize the products RhMn2O2-[(NO)1,2] during CO oxidation and at the same time works together with the Rh atom to store electrons that stay originally in the attached CO2- unit. The leading result is that the desorption of CO2, which is the rate-determining step of CO oxidation by RhMn2O3-, can be greatly facilitated on the reactions of RhMn2O3-[(NO)1,2] with CO.

Photoelectron velocity map imaging spectroscopy of group 14 elements and iron tetracarbonyl anionic clusters MFe(CO)4- (M = Si, Ge, Sn)

The heteronuclear group 14 M-iron tetracarbonyl clusters MFe(CO)4- (M = Si, Ge, Sn) anions have been generated in the gas phase by laser ablation of M-Fe alloys and detected by mass and photoelectron spectroscopy. With the support of quantum chemical calculations, the geometric and electronic structures of MFe(CO)4- (M = Si, Ge, Sn) are elucidated, which shows that all the MFe(CO)4- clusters have the M-Fe bonded, iron-centered, and carbonyl-terminal M-Fe(CO)4 structure with the C2v symmetry and a 2B2 ground state. The M-Fe bond can be considered a double bond, which includes one σ electron sharing bond and one π dative bond. The C-O bonds in those anionic clusters are calculated to be elongated to different extents, and in particular, the C-O bonds in SiFe(CO)4- are elongated more. The Si-Fe alloy thus turns out to be a better collocation to activate the C-O bonds in the gas phase among group 14. The present findings have important implications for the rational development of high-performance catalysts with isolated metal atoms/clusters dispersed on supports.

CO2 and H2 Activation on Zinc-Doped Copper Clusters

Here we systematically investigate the CO2 and H2 activation and dissociation on small Cun Zn0/+ (n=3-6) clusters using Density Functional Theory. We show that Cu6 Zn is a superatom, displaying an increased HOMO-LUMO gap and is inert towards CO2 or H2 activation or dissociation. While other neutral clusters weakly activate CO2 , the cationic clusters preferentially bind the CO2 in monodentate nonactivated way. Notably, Cu4 Zn allows for the dissociation of activated CO2 , whereas larger clusters destabilize all activated CO2 binding modes. Conversely, H2 dissociation is favored on all clusters examined, except for Cu6 Zn. Cu3 Zn+ and Cu4 Zn, favor the formation of formate through the H2 dissociation pathway rather than CO2 dissociation. These findings suggest the potential of these clusters as synthetic targets and underscore their significance in the realm of CO2 hydrogenation.

Spectroscopic characterization of heteronuclear iron-chromium carbonyl cluster anions

Infrared photodissociation spectroscopy has been used to investigate CrFe(CO)n- (n = 4-9) clusters in the gas phase. Comparison of the observed spectra in the carbonyl stretching frequency region with those predicted for low-lying isomers by DFT calculations showed that the observed CrFe(CO)n- (n = 4-8) clusters could be characterized to have Cr-Fe bonded (OC)4Fe-Cr(CO)n-4 structures. The coexistence of isomers with the (OC)Fe-Cr(CO)5 and (OC)3Fe-Cr(CO)4 structures was also observed for CrFe(CO)6- and CrFe(CO)7- anions, respectively. The CrFe(CO)n- (n = 4-8) complexes were strongly bonded systems. The CrFe(CO)8- complex was a coordination-saturated cluster, and the CrFe(CO)9- anion was characterized to contain a CrFe(CO)8- core tagged by one CO molecule. Bonding analysis revealed that the Cr-Fe bonds in the CrFe(CO)n- (n = 4-8) clusters were predominantly σ-type single bonds. The iron center in the Fe(CO)4 moiety and the chromium center in the Cr(CO)5 moiety fulfilled the 18-electron configuration for the CrFe(CO)n- (n = 4-6) clusters. As in the CrFe(CO)n- (n = 7, 8) complexes, the iron center in the Fe(CO)4 moiety exhibited a 17-electron configuration, while the chromium center in the Cr(CO)4 moiety exhibited a 16-electron configuration. These findings provide valuable insights into the structure and bonding mechanism of heterometallic carbonyl clusters.

Probing adsorption of methane onto vanadium cluster cations via vibrational spectroscopy

Photofragment spectroscopy is used to measure the vibrational spectra of V2+(CH4)n (n = 1-4), V3+(CH4)n (n = 1-3), and Vx+(CH4) (x = 4-8) in the C-H stretching region (2550-3100 cm-1). Spectra are measured by monitoring loss of CH4. The experimental spectra are compared to simulations at the B3LYP+D3/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level of theory to identify the geometry of the ions. Multi-reference configuration interaction with Davidson correction (MRCI+Q) calculations are also carried out on V2+ and V3+. The methane binding orientation in V2+(CH4)n (n = 1-4) evolves from η3 to η2 as more methane molecules are added. The IR spectra of metal-methane clusters can give information on the structure of metal clusters that may otherwise be hard to obtain from isolated clusters. For example, the V3+(CH4)n (n = 1-3) experimental spectra show an additional peak as the second and third methane molecules are added to V3+, which indicates that the metal atoms are not equivalent. The Vx+(CH4) show a larger red shift in the symmetric C-H stretch for larger clusters with x = 5-8 than for the small clusters with x = 2, 3, indicating increased covalency in the interaction of larger vanadium clusters with methane.

Liberation of carbon monoxide from formic acid mediated by molybdenum oxyanions

Multistage mass spectrometry experiments, isotope labelling and DFT calculations were used to explore whether selective decarbonylation of formic acid could be mediated by molybdate anions [(MoO3)x(OH)]- (x = 1 and 2) via a formal catalytic cycle involving two steps. In step 1, both molybdate anions undergo gas-phase ion-molecule reactions (IMR) with formic acid to produce the coordinated formates [(MoO3)x(O2CH)]- and H2O. In step 2, both coordinated formates [(MoO3)x(O2CH)]- undergo decarbonylation under collision-induced dissociation (CID) conditions to reform the molybdate anions [(MoO3)x(OH)]- (x = 1 and 2), thus closing a formal catalytic cycle. In the case of [MoO3(O2CH)]- an additional decarboxylation channel also occurs to yield [MoO3(H)]-, which is unreactive towards formic acid. The reaction between [Mo18O3(18OH)]- and formic acid gives rise to [Mo18O3(O2CH)]- highlighting that ligand substitution occurs without 18O/16O exchange between the coordinated 18OH ligand and HC16O2H. The reaction between [(MoO3)x(OD)]- (x = 1 and 2) and DCO2H initially produces [(MoO3)x(OH)]- (x = 1 and 2), indicating that D/H exchange occurs. DFT calculations were carried out to investigate the reaction mechanisms and energetics associated with both steps of the formal catalytic cycle and to better understand the competition between decarbonylation and decarboxylation, which is crucial in developing a selective catalyst. The CO and CO2 loss channels from the monomolybdate anion [MoO3(O2CH)]- have similar barrier heights which is in agreement with experimental results where both fragmentation channels are observed. In contrast, the dimolybdate anion is more selective, since the decarbonylation pathway of [(MoO3)2(O2CH)]- is both kinetically and thermodynamically favoured, which agrees with experimental observations where the CO loss channel is solely observed.

Selective Reduction of NO into N2 Catalyzed by Rh1-Doped Cluster Anions RhCe2O3-5. J Am Chem Soc 2023;145:18658-18667. [PMID: 37572057 DOI: 10.1021/jacs.3c06565]

Catalytic conversion of toxic nitrogen oxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO) into nitrogen (N2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) is imperative under the weight of the increasingly stringent emission regulations, while a fundamental understanding of the nature of the active site to selectively drive N2 generation is elusive. Herein, in combination with state-of-the-art mass-spectrometric experiments and quantum-chemical calculations, we demonstrated that the rhodium-cerium oxide clusters RhCe2O3-5- can catalytically drive NO reduction by CO and give rise to N2 and CO2. This finding represents a sharp improvement in cluster science where N2O is commonly produced in the rarely established examples of catalytic NO reduction mediated with gas-phase clusters. We demonstrated the importance of the unique chemical environment in the RhCe2O3- cluster to guide the substantially improved N2 selectivity: a triatomic Lewis "acid-base-acid" Ceδ+-Rhδ--Ceδ+ site is proposed to strongly adsorb two NO molecules as well as the N2O intermediate that is attached on the Rh atom and can facilely dissociate to form N2 assisted by both Ce atoms.

Exploring Metal Nanocluster Catalysts for Ammonia Synthesis Using Informatics Methods: A Concerted Effort of Bayesian Optimization, Swarm Intelligence, and First-Principles Computation

This paper details the use of computational and informatics methods to design metal nanocluster catalysts for efficient ammonia synthesis. Three main problems are tackled: defining a measure of catalytic activity, choosing the best candidate from a large number of possibilities, and identifying the thermodynamically stable cluster catalyst structure. First-principles calculations, Bayesian optimization, and particle swarm optimization are used to obtain a Ti8 nanocluster as a catalyst candidate. The N2 adsorption structure on Ti8 indicates substantial activation of the N2 molecule, while the NH3 adsorption structure suggests that NH3 is likely to undergo easy desorption. The study also reveals several cluster catalyst candidates that break the general trade-off that surfaces that strongly adsorb reactants also strongly adsorb products.

Size-Dependent Reactivity of Con- (n = 5-25) Cluster Anions toward Carbon Dioxide

A fundamental understanding of the reactivity evolution of nanosized clusters at an atomically precise level is pivotal to assemble desired materials with promising candidates. Benefiting from the tandem mass spectrometer coupled with a high-temperature ion-trap reactor, the reactions of mass-selected Con- (n = 5-25) clusters with CO2 were investigated and the increased reactivity of Co20-25- was newly discovered herein. This finding marks an important step to understand property evolution of subnanometer metal clusters (Co25-, ∼0.8 nm) atom-by-atom. The reasons behind the increased reactivity of Co20-25- were proposed by analyzing the reactions of smaller Co6-8- clusters that exhibit significantly different reactivity toward CO2, in which a lower electron affinity of Con contributes to the capture of CO2 while the flexibility of Con- could play vital roles to stabilize reaction intermediates and suppress the barriers of O-CO rupture and CO desorption.

Superior Reactivity of Molybdenum-Sulfur Cluster Anions Mo5S2- and Mo5S3- toward Dinitrogen

Inspired by the fact that Mo is a key element in biological nitrogenase, a series of gas-phase MoxSy- cluster anions are prepared and their reactivity toward N2 is investigated by the combination of mass spectrometry, photoelectron imaging spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. The Mo5S2- and Mo5S3- cluster anions show remarkable reactivity compared with the anionic species reported previously. The spectroscopic results in conjunction with theoretical analysis reveal that a facile cleavage of N≡N bonds takes place on Mo5S2- and Mo5S3-. The large dissociative adsorption energy of N2 and the favorable entrance channel for initial N2 approaching are proposed as two decisive factors for the superior reactivity of Mo5S2- and Mo5S3-. Besides, the modulation of S ligands on the reactivity of metal centers with N2 is proposed. The highly reactive metal-sulfur species may be obtained by the coordination of two to three sulfur atoms to bare metal clusters so that an appropriate combination of electronic structures and charge distributions can be achieved.

Dynamics of the Oxygen Atom Transfer Reaction between Carbon Dioxide and the Tantalum Cation

The understanding of fundamental atomic-level processes often requires well-defined model systems. The oxygen atom transfer from CO₂ to a transition metal cation in the gas phase presents such a model system. We investigate the reaction of Ta⁺ + CO₂ for which the formation of TaO⁺ is highly efficient and attributed to multistate reactivity. Here, we study the atomistic dynamics of the oxygen atom transfer reaction by recording experimental energy and angle differential cross sections by crossed beam velocity map imaging supported by ab initio quantum chemical calculations. Product ion velocity distributions are dominated by signatures for indirect dynamics, despite the reaction being highly exothermic. Product kinetic energy distributions show little dependence on additional collision energy even with only four atoms involved, which hints at dynamical trapping behind a submerged barrier.

The global minimum of Ag30: a prolate spheroidal structure predicted using a genetic algorithm with incomplete local optimizations at the DFT level

Genetic algorithms have been widely used to explore global minimum points of atomic clusters, and their incorporation with ab initio calculations (including density functional theory methods) as local optimization approaches increases their ability to accurately locate the global minimum points on complicated potential energy surfaces. However, the local optimizations using ab initio calculations significantly increase the computational cost relative to those based on empirical or semi-empirical calculations. Herein, we develop a genetic algorithm program with an incomplete local optimization strategy at the DFT level. Using several representative clusters as test examples, this program showed high efficiency in locating their global minimum points. The low-lying isomers of Ag₃₀ were explored using this program, and the determined global minimum is a prolate spheroidal structure. The elongated spheroidal shape causes degeneracy lifting of the free electron shells, and endows Ag₃₀ with a large HOMO-LUMO gap. The sharp increase of silver clusters' reactivity around the sizes with 30 valence electrons observed in our previous experiments could be correlated with this theoretical figure.

Probing the binding and activation of small molecules by gas-phase transition metal clusters via IR spectroscopy

Isolated transition metal clusters have been established as useful models for extended metal surfaces or deposited metal particles, to improve the understanding of their surface chemistry and of catalytic reactions. For this objective, an important milestone has been the development of experimental methods for the size-specific structural characterization of clusters and cluster complexes in the gas phase. This review focusses on the characterization of molecular ligands, their binding and activation by small transition metal clusters, using cluster-size specific infrared action spectroscopy. A comprehensive overview and a critical discussion of the experimental data available to date is provided, reaching from the initial results obtained using line-tuneable CO₂ lasers to present-day studies applying infrared free electron lasers as well as other intense and broadly tuneable IR laser sources.

Catalytic NO Reduction by Noble-Metal-Free Vanadium-Aluminum Oxide Cluster Anions

By using state-of-the-art mass spectrometry and guided by the newly discovered single-electron mechanism (SEM; e.g., Ti³⁺ + 2NO → Ti⁴⁺-O^•- + N₂O), we determined experimentally that the vanadium-aluminum oxide clusters V_4-xAl_xO_10-x^- (x = 1-3) can catalyze the reduction of NO by CO and substantiated theoretically that the SEM still prevails in driving the catalysis. This finding marks an important step in cluster science in which a noble metal had been demonstrated to be indispensable in NO activation mediated by heteronuclear metal clusters. The results provide new insights into the SEM in which active V-Al cooperative communication favors the transfer of an unpaired electron from the V atom to NO attached to the Al atom on which the reduction reaction actually takes place. This study provides a clear picture for improving our understanding of related heterogeneous catalysis, and the electron hopping behavior induced by NO adsorption could be a fundamental chemistry for driving NO reduction.

Size Effects in Gas-phase C-H Activation

The gas-phase clusters reaction permits addressing fundamental aspects of the challenges related to C-H activation. The size effect plays a key role in the activation processes as it may substantially affect both the reactivity and selectivity. In this paper, we reviewed the size effect related to the hydrocarbon oxidation by early transition metal oxides and main group metal oxides, methane activation mediated by late transition metals. Based on mass-spectrometry experiments in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations, mechanistic discussions were reviewed to present how and why the size greatly regulates the reactivity and product distribution.

Dinitrogen Activation in the Gas Phase: Spectroscopic Characterization of C-N Coupling in the V3 C+ +N2 Reaction

We report on cluster-mediated C-N bond formation in the gas phase using N₂ as a nitrogen source. The V₃ C⁺ +N₂ reaction is studied by a combination of ion-trap mass spectrometry with infrared photodissociation (IRPD) spectroscopy and complemented by electronic structure calculations. The proposed reaction mechanism is spectroscopically validated by identifying the structures of the reactant and product ions. V₃ C⁺ exhibits a pyramidal structure of C₁ -symmetry. N₂ activation is initiated by adsorption in an end-on fashion at a vanadium site, followed by spontaneous cleavage of the N≡N triple bond and subsequent C-N coupling. The IRPD spectrum of the metal nitride product [NV₃ (C=N)]⁺ exhibits characteristic C=N double bond (1530 cm^-1 ) and V-N single bond (770, 541 and 522 cm^-1 ) stretching bands.

Thermal Methane Conversion to Formaldehyde Mediated by NiAlO3+ in the Gas Phase

Understanding the active sites and reaction mechanisms of Ni-based catalysts, such as Ni/Al₂O₃, toward methane is a prerequisite for improving their rational design. Here, the gas-phase reactivity of NiAlO₃⁺ cations toward CH₄ is studied using mass spectrometry combined with density functional theory. Similar to our previous study on NiAl₂O₄⁺, we find evidence for the formation of both the methyl radical (CH₃^•) and formaldehyde (CH₂O). The first step for methane activation is hydrogen atom abstraction by the terminal oxygen radical Ni(O)₂AlO^• from methane forming a [Ni(O)₂AlOH⁺, ^•CH₃] complex and leaving the Ni-oxidation state unchanged. The second C-H bond is subsequently activated by the association of a bridged Ni-O^2--Al. The oxidation state of the Ni atom is reduced from +3 to +1 during the formation of formaldehyde. Compared to Al₂O₃⁺/CH₄ and YAlO₃⁺/CH₄ systems, the Ni-atom substitution increases the overall reaction rate by roughly an order of magnitude and yields a CH₃^•/CH₂O branching ratio of 0.62/0.38. The present study provides molecular-level insights into the highly efficient gas-phase reaction mechanism contributing to an improved understanding of methane conversion by Ni/Al₂O₃ catalysts.

Catalytic NO Reduction by NO Pre-Adsorbed RhCeO2 NO- Clusters

A fundamental understanding on the dynamically structural evolution of catalysts induced by reactant gases under working conditions is challenging but pivotal in catalyst design. Herein, in combination with state-of-the-art mass spectrometry for cluster reactions, cryogenic photoelectron imaging spectroscopy, and quantum-chemical calculations, we identified that NO adsorption on rhodium-cerium bimetallic oxide cluster RhCeO₂ ^- can create a Ce³⁺ ion in product RhCeO₂ NO^- that serves as the starting point to trigger the catalysis of NO reduction by CO. Theoretical calculations substantiated that the reduction of another two NO molecules into N₂ O takes place exclusively on the Ce³⁺ ion while Rh behaves like a promoter to buffer electrons and cooperates with Ce³⁺ to drive NO reduction. Our finding demonstrates the importance of NO in regulating the catalytic behavior of Rh under reaction conditions and provides much-needed insights into the essence of NO reduction over Rh/CeO₂ , one of the most efficient components in three-way catalysts for NO_x removal.

Gas-phase reactions driven by polarized metal-metal bonding in atomic clusters

Multimetallic catalysts exhibit great potential in the activation and catalytic transformation of small molecules. The polarized metal-metal bonds have been gradually recognized to account for the reactivity of multimetallic catalysts due to the synergistic effect of different metal centers. Gas-phase reactions on atomic clusters that compositionally resemble the active sites on related condensed-phase catalysts provide a widely accepted strategy to clarify the nature of polarized metal-metal bonds and the mechanistic details of elementary steps involved in the catalysis driven by this unique chemical bonding. This perspective review concerns the progress in the fundamental understanding of industrially and environmentally important reactions that are closely related to the polarized metal-metal bonds in clusters at a strictly molecular level. The following topics have been summarized and discussed: (1) catalytic CO oxidation with O₂, H₂O, and NO as oxidants (2) and the activation of other inert molecules (e.g., CH₄, CO₂, and N₂) mediated with clusters featuring polarized metal-metal bonding. It turns out that the findings in the gas phase parallel the catalytic behaviors of condensed-phase catalysts and the knowledge can prove to be essential in inspiring future design of promising catalysts.

Near thermal, selective liberation of hydrogen from formic acid catalysed by copper hydride ate complexes

A near thermal two-step catalytic cycle for the selective release of hydrogen from formic acid by mononuclear cuprate anions was revealed using multistage mass spectrometry experiments, deuterium labelling and DFT calculations. In gas-phase ion-molecule reactions, mononuclear copper hydride anions [(L)Cu(H)]^- (where L = H^-, O₂CH^-, BH₄^- and CN^-) were found to react with formic acid (HCO₂H) to yield [(L)Cu(O₂CH)]^- and H₂. The copper formate anions [(L)Cu(O₂CH)]^- can decarboxylate via collision-induced dissociation (CID) to reform the copper hydride [(L)Cu(H)]^-, thereby closing the two-step catalytic cycle. Analogous labelling experiments with d₁-formic acid (DCO₂H) reveal that the decarboxylation process also occurs spontaneously. A kinetic study was carried out to provide further insights into the species involved in this reaction. Energetics from density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the key decarboxylation step can occur without CID, thus in support of experimental observations.

Identifying the structural configurations of precursors for CO dissociation is fundamentally interesting and industrially important in the fields of, e.g., Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Herein, we demonstrated that CO could be dissociated on polynuclear vanadium nitride V₄N₅^- clusters at room temperature, and a key intermediate, with CO in a N-assisted tilted bridge coordination where the C-O bond ruptures easily, was discovered. The reaction was characterized by mass spectrometry, photoelectron spectroscopy, and quantum-chemistry calculations, and the nature of the adsorbed CO on product V₄N₅CO^- was further characterized by a collision-induced dissociation experiment. Theoretical analysis evidences that CO dissociation is predominantly governed by the low-coordinated V and N atoms on the (V₃N₄)VN^- cluster and the V₃N₄ moiety resembles a support. This finding strongly suggests that a novel mode for facile CO dissociation was identified in a gas-phase cluster study.

Defined metal atom aggregates precisely incorporated into metal-organic frameworks

Nanosized metal aggregates (MAs), including metal nanoparticles (NPs) and nanoclusters (NCs), are often the active species in numerous applications. In order to maintain the active form of MAs in "use", they need to be anchored and stabilised, preventing agglomeration. In this context, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which exhibit a unique combination of properties, are of particular interest as a tunable and porous matrix to host MAs. A high degree of control in the synthesis towards atom-efficient and application-oriented MA@MOF composites is required to derive specific structure-property relationships and in turn to enable design of functions on the molecular level. Due to the versatility of MA@MOF (derived) materials, their applications are not limited to the obvious field of catalysis, but increasingly include 'out of the box' applications, for example medical diagnostics and theranostics, as well as specialised (bio-)sensoring techniques. This review focuses on recent advances in the controlled synthesis of MA@MOF materials en route to atom-precise MAs. The main synthetic strategies, namely 'ship-in-bottle', 'bottle-around-ship', and approaches to achieve novel hierarchical MA@MOF structures are highlighted and discussed while identifying their potential as well as their limitations. Hereby, an overview of standard characterisation methods that enable a systematic analysis procedure and state-of-art techniques that localise MA within MOF cavities are provided. While the perspectives of MA@MOF materials in general have been reviewed various times in the recent past, few atom-precise MAs inside MOFs have been reported so far, opening opportunities for future investigation.

Direct Conversion of N2 and O2 to Nitric Oxide at Room Temperature Initiated by Double Aromaticity in the Y2BO+ Cation

The conversion of dinitrogen to more useful and reactive molecules has been the focus of intense research by chemists. In contrast to reductive N₂ fixation, direct oxidation of N₂ by O₂ to nitric oxide under mild conditions via a thermochemical process is extremely challenging. Herein, we report the first example of N₂ and O₂ activation and coupling under thermochemical conditions through the remarkable ability of Y₂BO⁺ to react with one N₂ and two O₂ molecules. Detailed mechanistic studies using mass spectrometry and quantum chemical calculations revealed that the N₂ activation by Y₂BO⁺ is facilitated by the double aromatic character of the Y₂BON₂⁺ intermediate. Subsequent oxidation with O₂ releases NO in a dearomatization process driven by the formation of stronger Y-O bonds over the Y-N bonds. Our findings represent the first example of N₂ and O₂ activation and coupling under thermochemical conditions at room temperature, providing a novel strategy for small-molecule activation.

NO Bond Cleavage on Gas-Phase Irn+ Clusters Investigated by Infrared Multiple Photon Dissociation Spectroscopy

The adsorption forms of NO on Ir_n⁺ (n = 3-6) clusters were investigated using infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Spectral features indicative both for molecular NO adsorption (the NO stretching vibration in the 1800-1900 cm^-1 range) and for dissociative NO adsorption (the terminal Ir-O vibration around 940 cm^-1) were observed, elucidating the co-existence of molecular and dissociative adsorption of NO. In all calculated structures for molecular adsorption, NO is adsorbed via the N atom on on-top sites. For dissociative adsorption, the O atom adsorbs exclusively on on-top sites (μ₁) of the clusters, whereas the N atom is found on either a bridge (μ₂) or a hollow (μ₃) site. For Ir₅⁺ and Ir₆⁺, the N atom is also found on the on-top sites. The observed propensity for NO dissociation on Ir_n⁺ (n = 3-6) is higher than that for Rh₆⁺, which can be explained by the higher metal-oxygen bond strengths for iridium.

Decomposition of Halogenated Molybdenum Sulfide Dianions [Mo3S7X6]2- (X = Cl, Br, I)

Molybdenum sulfides are considered a promising and inexpensive alternative to platinum as a catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction. In this study, we perform collision-induced dissociation experiments in the gas phase with the halogenated molybdenum sulfides [Mo₃S₇Cl₆]^2-, [Mo₃S₇Br₆]^2-, and [Mo₃S₇I₆]^2-. We show that the first fragmentation step for all three dianions is charge separation via loss of a halide ion. As a second step, further halogen loss competes with the dissociation of a disulfur molecule, whereas the former becomes energetically more favorable and the latter becomes less favorable from chlorine via bromine to iodine. We show that the leaving S₂ group is composed of sulfur atoms from two bridging groups. These decomposition pathways differ drastically from the pure [Mo₃S₁₃]^2- clusters. The obtained insight into preferred dissociation pathways of molybdenum sulfides illustrate possible reaction pathways during the activation of these substances in a catalytic environment.

Adsorption and Activation of O2 on Small Gold Oxide Clusters: the Reactivity Dominated by Site-Specific Factors

We experimentally explored adsorption and activation of O₂ on small anionic clusters Au_xO_y^- containing one to five gold atoms and between one and three oxygen atoms using an instrument including a magnetron sputtering cluster source, a micro flow reactor running at low temperature, and a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Some species, including AuO^-, one isomer of Au₂O₂^-, Au₃O^-, one isomer of Au₃O₃^-, and Au₅O₂^-, can adsorb an O₂ molecule. We theoretically explored the structures of these active species and the inert ones appearing in the experiment by combining a structure search strategy based on the genetic algorithm and the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Impressively, all active species observed in the experiment have a -O-Au site, in which the gold atom is a dangling or a vertex atom. Each -O-Au site can strongly adsorb one O₂ with its Au atom to form a straight-line structure -O-Au-O-, and the adsorbed O₂ is significantly activated by accepting one electron with one of its π_2p* orbitals. With no exception, all oxygen sites and the -O-Au-Au sites in Au_xO_y^- are inert. Analyses on the density of states (DOS) of representative species well interpret the physical origins of the activity of -O-Au and the inertness of -O-Au-Au. The observations that site-specific factors dominate the reactivity of gold oxide clusters with O₂ are in contrast to what happens in the reactions of Au_n^- with O₂, where clusters' reactivity is completely determined by their global spins and electron detachment energies. The new conclusions in this work offer a reference to understand the crucial O₂ activation processes in gold-based catalysts, since various gold oxide structures are commonly observed in these systems.

Gas-Phase Mechanism of O.- /Ni2+ -Mediated Methane Conversion to Formaldehyde

The gas-phase reaction of NiAl₂ O₄ ⁺ with CH₄ is studied by mass spectrometry in combination with vibrational action spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT). Two product ions, NiAl₂ O₄ H⁺ and NiAl₂ O₃ H₂ ⁺ , are identified in the mass spectra. The DFT calculations predict that the global minimum-energy isomer of NiAl₂ O₄ ⁺ contains Ni in the +II oxidation state and features a terminal Al-O^.- oxygen radical site. They show that methane can react along two competing pathways leading to formation of either a methyl radical (CH₃ ⋅) or formaldehyde (CH₂ O). Both reactions are initiated by hydrogen atom transfer from methane to the terminal O^.- site, followed by either CH₃ ⋅ loss or CH₃ ⋅ migration to an O^2- site next to the Ni²⁺ center. The CH₃ ⋅ attaches as CH₃ ⁺ to O^2- and its unpaired electron is transferred to the Ni-center reducing it to Ni⁺ . The proposed mechanism is experimentally confirmed by vibrational spectroscopy of the reactant and two different product ions.

Noble metals dispersed on transition-metal carbides exhibit extraordinary activity in CO₂ catalytic conversion and bimetallic carbides generated at the interface were proposed to contribute to the observed activity. Heteronuclear metal carbide clusters (HMCCs) that compositionally resemble the bimetallic carbides are suitable models to get a fundamental understanding of the reactivity of the related condensed-phase catalysts, while the reaction of HMCCs with CO₂ has not been touched in the gas phase. Herein, benefiting from the newly designed double ion trap reactors, the reaction of laser-ablation generated and mass-selected RhTaC₂^- clusters with CO₂ was studied. The experimental results identified that RhTaC₂^- can reduce four CO₂ molecules consecutively and generate the product RhTaC₂O₄^-. The pivotal roles of Rh-Ta synergy and the C₂ ligand in driving CO₂ reduction were rationalized by theoretical calculations. The presence of an attached CO unit on the product RhTaC₂O₄^- was evidenced by the collision-induced dissociation experiment, providing a fundamental strategy to alleviate carbon deposition under a CO₂ atmosphere at elevated temperatures.

Rearrangement and decomposition pathways of bare and hydrogenated molybdenum oxysulfides in the gas phase

Molybdenum sulfides and molybdenum oxysulfides are considered a promising and cheap alternative to platinum as a catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). To better understand possible rearrangements during catalyst activation, we perform collision induced dissociation experiments in the gas phase with eight different molybdenum oxysulfides, namely [Mo₂O₂S₆]^2-, [Mo₂O₂S₆]^-, [Mo₂O₂S₅]^2-, [Mo₂O₂S₅]^-, [Mo₂O₂S₄]^-, [HMo₂O₂S₆]^-, [HMo₂O₂S₅]^- and [HMo₂O₂S₄]^-, on a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometer. We identify fragmentation channels of the molybdenum oxysulfides and their interconnections. Together with quantum chemical calculations, the results show that [Mo₂O₂S₄]^- is a particularly stable species against further dissociation, which is reached from all starting species with relatively low collision energies. Most interestingly, H atom loss is the only fragmentation channel observed for [HMo₂O₂S₄]^- at low collision energies, which relates to potential HER activity, since two such H atom binding sites on a surface may act together to release H₂. The calculations reveal that multiple isomers are often very close in energy, especially for the hydrogenated species, i.e., atomic hydrogen can bind at various sites of the clusters. S₂ groups play a decisive role in hydrogen adsorption. These are further features with potential relevance for HER catalysis.

Experimental and Theoretical Study of N2 Adsorption on Hydrogenated Y2C4H− and Dehydrogenated Y2C4− Cluster Anions at Room Temperature

The adsorption of atmospheric dinitrogen (N₂) on transition metal sites is an important topic in chemistry, which is regarded as the prerequisite for the activation of robust N≡N bonds in biological and industrial fields. Metal hydride bonds play an important part in the adsorption of N₂, while the role of hydrogen has not been comprehensively studied. Herein, we report the N₂ adsorption on the well-defined Y₂C₄H_0,1⁻ cluster anions under mild conditions by using mass spectrometry and density functional theory calculations. The mass spectrometry results reveal that the reactivity of N₂ adsorption on Y₂C₄H⁻ is 50 times higher than that on Y₂C₄⁻ clusters. Further analysis reveals the important role of the H atom: (1) the presence of the H atom modifies the charge distribution of the Y₂C₄H⁻ anion; (2) the approach of N₂ to Y₂C₄H⁻ is more favorable kinetically compared to that to Y₂C₄⁻; and (3) a natural charge analysis shows that two Y atoms and one Y atom are the major electron donors in the Y₂C₄⁻ and Y₂C₄H⁻ anion clusters, respectively. This work provides new clues to the rational design of TM-based catalysts by efficiently doping hydrogen atoms to modulate the reactivity towards N₂.

Free-Energy Landscape and Isomerization Rates of Au4 Clusters at Finite Temperatures

In metallic nanoparticles, the geometry of atomic positions controls the particle's electronic band structure, polarizability, and catalytic properties. Analyzing the structural properties is a complex problem; the structure of an assembled cluster changes from moment to moment due to thermal fluctuations. Conventional structural analyses based on spectroscopy or diffraction cannot determine the instantaneous structure exactly and can merely provide an averaged structure. Molecular simulations offer an opportunity to examine the assembly and evolution of metallic clusters, as the preferred assemblies and conformations can easily be visualized and explored. Here, we utilize the adaptive biasing force algorithm applied to first-principles molecular dynamics to demonstrate the exploration of a relatively simple system, which permits a comprehensive study of the small metal cluster Au₄ in both neutral and charged configurations. Our simulation work offers a quantitative understanding of these clusters' dynamic structure, which is significant for single-site catalytic reactions on metal clusters and provides a starting point for a detailed quantitative understanding of more complex pure metal and alloy clusters' dynamic properties.
