Abstract
Metal-free boron- and carbon-based catalysts have shown both great fundamental and practical value in oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of light alkanes. In particular, boron-based catalysts show a superior selectivity toward olefins, excellent stability and atom-economy to valuable carbon-based products by minimizing CO2 emission, which are highly promising in future industrialization. The carbonaceous catalysts also exhibited impressive behavior in the ODH of light alkanes helped along by surface oxygen-containing functional groups. This review surveyed and compared the preparation methods of the boron- and carbon-based catalysts and their characterization, their performance in the ODH of light alkanes, and the mechanistic issues of the ODH including the identification of the possible active sites and the exploration of the underlying mechanisms. We discussed different boron-based materials and established versatile methodologies for the investigation of active sites and reaction mechanisms. We also elaborated on the similarities and differences in catalytic and kinetic behaviors, and reaction mechanisms between boron- and carbon-based metal-free materials. A perspective of the potential issues of metal-free ODH catalytic systems in terms of their rational design and their synergy with reactor engineering was sketched.

Abstract
Reduced graphene oxide/metal oxide (rGO/MO) hybrid has been widely used as a catalyst, while dissolved oxygen or radicals are generally recognized as the oxidant. This study finds that the adsorbed arsenite (As(III)) on rGO/MO is oxidized to arsenate (As(V)) in the absence of other oxidants or radicals. The oxidation of As(III) is observed on varying rGO/MOs, including rGO/MOs composited of different types of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and metal oxide. The epoxy group on rGO acts as the oxidant, evidenced by the significant correlation between the consumption of epoxy group and oxidation of As(III). Meanwhile, metal oxide provides adsorption sites for As(III) during the adsorption-oxidation process. Based on a combination of spectroscopic measurements and computational calculation, a possible pathway for As(III) oxidation by rGO/MO is proposed: the oxygen atom in the epoxy group is bonded to the adsorbed AsIIIO3, which is consequently oxidized to AsVO4. Overall, this study proves the role of rGO/MO as an oxidant, which opens a new perspective on future studies using rGO/MO as a catalyst for the oxidation reaction.

Abstract
Oxygen migration and spectroscopic properties of coronene (C24) epoxides and persulfurated coronene (PSC) oxides have been investigated by using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). The rim-oxide is predicted to be more energetically favorable than the oxygen-centered configuration, and the application of an external electric field can accelerate the epoxy migration from the middle to the edge of the molecule. The predicted electronic absorptions and emissions of the C24 epoxides strongly depend on the location of oxygen. In particular, the stable edge-epoxide C24d3 has the largest radiative decay rate (kr) and the smallest non-radiative decay rate (knr), suggesting relatively strong fluorescence emission. On the contrary, absorptions and emissions of the PSC oxides are less changed, compared to those of the pristine PSC. On-the-fly trajectory surface hopping dynamics simulations reveal that the nonadiabatic S1 → S0 decay of the C24 epoxides is triggered by C-O bond stretching, and thus the radiative and nonradiative features depend on the C-O bond strength. The present results indicate that the oxygen diffusion on the basal plane of graphene oxides is easily tuned by the external electric field and their optoelectronic properties show a notable oxygen-site dependence.

Abstract
GO–porphyrin composites were simply prepared by a self-assembly process. The noncovalent interactions between the porphyrins and oxygen-containing functional groups on GO play a crucial role in controlling their photocatalytic activities.

Abstract
Graphene has attracted increasing attention in different scientific fields including catalysis. Via modification with foreign metal-free elements such as nitrogen, its unique electronic and spin structure can be changed and these doped graphene sheets have been successfully employed in some catalytic reactions recently, showing them to be promising catalysts for a wide range of reactions. In this review, we summarize the recent advancements of these new and interesting catalysts, with an emphasis on the universal origin of their catalytic mechanisms. We are full of hope for future developments, such as more precisely controlled doping methods, atom-scale surface characterization technology, generating more active catalysts via doping, and finding wide applications in many different fields.
