Photocyclization and Photoisomerization Mechanisms of an Indolylfulgide Derivative in Acetonitrile Solution by Using the QM (MS-CASPT2)/MM Method

The indolylfulgide systems have been extensively investigated due to their potential applications as photochromic materials. In this work, the photoinduced ring-closure/opening and isomerization reactions of a photochromic indolylfulgide in vacuum and acetonitrile solvent have been investigated by means of MS-CASPT2//CASSCF and QM(MS-CASPT2)//CASSCF/MM. The deactivation mechanisms of indolylfulgide have been proposed based on the optimized structures in the S0 and S1 states, S1/S0 conical intersections, and the calculated minimum-energy paths. After excitation into the first singlet excited-state, which is spectroscopically bright in the Franck-Condon point of the E, the photoprocesses proceed toward a nearby S1 minimum. Then, two possible nonadiabatic relaxation paths exist to repopulate the ground state. In the ring closure reaction, the S1 E isomer evolves directly into one S1/S0 conical intersection and decays to the ground state with bifurcation toward C or E. In the E → Z tautomerization pathway, the excited system can deactivate to the S0 state via a distinct conical intersection. The minimum-energy paths of the indolylfulgide revealed that the ring closure reaction in the solvent is more facile to take place than the E → Z isomerization after irradiation of the same E. Furthermore, for the ring opening reaction from the C side, there exists an energy barrier (11.1 kcal/mol) in the S1 state before arriving at the conical intersection. The computational results showed that the solvent has some influence on the system compared with that in the gas phase. The present work could contribute to comprehending the photoreactions of indolylfulgide and its derivatives in solution.

Theoretical Investigation on the Reversible Photoswitch Mechanism of Benzylidene-Oxazolone System

The design and application of molecular photoswitches have attracted much attention. Herein, we performed a detailed computational study on the photoswitch benzylidene-oxazolone system based on static electronic structure calculations and on-the-fly excited-state dynamic simulations. For the Z and E isomer, we located six and four minimum energy conical intersections (MECIs) between the first excited state (S1) and the ground state (S0), respectively. Among them, the relaxation pathway driven by ring-puckering motion is the most competitive channel with the photoisomeization process, leading to the low photoisomerization quantum yield. In the dynamic simulations, about 88 % and 66 % trajectories decay from S1 to S0 for Z and E isomer, respectively, within the total simulation time of ~2 ps. The photoisomeization quantum yields obtained in our study (0.20 for Z→E and 0.12 for E→Z) agree well with the experimental measured values (0.25 and 0.11), even though the number of trajectories is limited to 50. Our study sheds light on the complexity of the benzylidene-oxazolone system 's deactivation process and the competitive mechanisms among different reaction channels, which provides theoretical guidance for further design and development of benzylidene-oxazolone based molecular photoswitches.

New insights into the photocyclization reaction of a popular diarylethene switch: a nonadiabatic molecular dynamics study

Diarylethene (DAE) molecular switches have continued to attract the attention of researchers for over 20 years. Their remarkable photophysical properties endow them with countless applications in photonics and molecular technologies. However, despite extensive experimental and theoretical research, the mechanism of DAE photoswitching is not yet fully rationalized. In this work, we investigate the ring closure dynamics of a popular DAE switch, 1,2-bis(3-methyl-5-phenyl-2 thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene (PT), using nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) simulations. Employing the fewest switches surface hopping protocol, along with the semi-empirical multireference ODM2/MRCI-SD method, we investigate possible reaction pathways for this photoprocess, as well as their timescales and resulting photoproducts. Furthermore, using a dynamic configuration-space sampling procedure, we elucidate the role of triplet states in the photocyclization of PT, supporting available experimental data for the closely related DMPT molecule, which indicate an ultrafast intersystem crossing (ISC) transition competing with the singlet-driven photoswitching reaction. Our findings not only corroborate experimental studies on DAE switches, but also provide new mechanistic insights into the potential use in the rational design of DAE switches tailored for specific technological applications.

Combined QM (MS-CASPT2)/MM studies on photocyclization and photoisomerization of a fulgide derivative in toluene solution

Photocyclization and photoisomerization of fulgides have been extensively studied experimentally and computationally due to their significant potential applications for example as photoswitches in memory devices. However, the reported excited-state decay mechanisms of fulgides do not include the effects of solvation explicitly to date. Herein, calculations using the high-level MS-CASPT2//CASSCF method were conducted to explore the photoinduced excited-state decay processes of the E_α conformer of a fulgide derivative in toluene with solvent effects treated by implicit PCM and explicit QM/MM models, respectively. Several minima and conical intersections were optimized successfully in and between the S₀ and S₁ states; then, two nonadiabatic excited-state decay channels that could efficiently drive the system to the ground state were proposed based on the excited-state ring-closure and isomerization paths. In addition, we also found that in the ring-closure path, the potential energy surface is essentially barrierless before approaching the conical intersection, while it needs to overcome a small energy barrier along the E → Z photoisomerization path for the nonadiabatic S₁ → S₀ internal conversion process. The present computational results could provide useful mechanistic insights into the photoinduced cyclization and isomerization reactions of fulgide and its derivatives.

Simulation and analysis of the relaxation dynamics of a photochromic furylfulgide

Furylfulgides, a class of photochromic organic compounds, show a complex system of photoinduced reactions. In the present study, the excited-state dynamics of the E_α and E_β isomers of a representative furylfulgide is modelled with the use of nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations. Moreover, a pattern recognition algorithm is employed in order to automatically identify relaxation pathways, and to quantify the photoproduct distributions. The simulation results indicate that, despite differing only in the orientation of the furyl group, the two isomers show markedly different photochemical behaviour. The predominant E_α isomer undergoes photocyclisation with a quantum yield (QY) of 0.27 ± 0.10. For this isomer, the undesired E → Z photoisomerisation around the central double bond represents a minor side reaction, with a QY of 0.09 ± 0.07. In contrast, the minority E_β isomer, which is incapable of photocyclisation, undergoes efficient E → Z photoisomerisation, with a QY as high as 0.56 ± 0.14. The relaxation kinetics and the photoproduct distributions are interpreted in the light of the available experimental data.

Nonadiabatic Dynamics Simulations on Early-Time Photochemistry of Spirobenzopyran

Photoinduced ring-opening, decay, and isomerization of spirobenzopyran have been explored by the OM2/MRCI nonadiabatic dynamics simulations based on Tully's fewest-switches surface hopping scheme. The efficient S₁ to S₀ internal conversion as observed in experiments is attributed to the existence of two efficient excited-state decay pathways. The first one is related to the C-N dissociation, and the second one is done to the C-O dissociation. The C-O dissociation pathway is dominant, and more than 90% trajectories decay to the S₀ state via the C-O bond-fission related S₁/S₀ conical intersections. Near these regions in the S₀ state, trajectories can either return to spirobenzopyran or proceed to various intermediates including merocyanine via a series of bond rotations. Our nonadiabatic dynamics simulations also demonstrate that the hydrogen-out-of-plane (HOOP) motion is important for efficient and ultrafast excited-state deactivation. On the other hand, we have also found that the replacement of methyl groups by hydrogen atoms in spirobenzopyran can artificially introduce different intramolecular hydrogen transfers leading to hydrogen-transferred intermediates. This finding is important for the community and demonstrates that such a kind of structural truncation, sometimes, could be problematic, leading to incorrect photodynamics. Our present work provides valuable insights into the photodynamics of spirobenzopyran, which could be helpful for the design of spiropyran-based photochromic materials.

Electronic structure calculations and nonadiabatic dynamics simulations of excited-state relaxation of Pigment Yellow 101

Pigment Yellow 101 (PY101) is widely used as a typical pigment due to its excellent excited-state properties. However, the origin of its photostability is still elusive. In this work, we have systematically investigated the photodynamics of PY101 by performing combined electronic structure calculations and trajectory-based nonadiabatic dynamics simulations. On the basis of the results, we have found that upon photoexcitation to the S₁ state, PY101 undergoes an essentially barrierless excited-state intramolecular single proton transfer generating an S₁ keto species. In the keto region, there is an energetically accessible S₁/S₀ conical intersection that funnels the system to the S₀ state quickly. In the S₀ state, the keto species either goes back to its trans-enol species through a ground-state reverse hydrogen transfer or arrives at the cis-keto region. In addition, we have found an additional excited-state decay channel for the S₁ enol species, which is directly linked to an S₁/S₀ conical intersection located in the enol region. This mechanism has also been confirmed by our dynamics simulations, in which about 54% of the trajectories decay to the S₀ state via the enol S₁/S₀ conical intersection; while the remaining ones employ the keto S₁/S₀ conical intersection. The gained mechanistic information helps us understand the photostability of the PY101 chromophore and its variants with the same molecular scaffold.

Photochromic Mechanism of a Bridged Diarylethene: Combined Electronic Structure Calculations and Nonadiabatic Dynamics Simulations

Intramolecularly bridged diarylethenes exhibit improved photocyclization quantum yields because the anti-syn isomerization that originally suppresses photocyclization in classical diarylethenes is blocked. Experimentally, three possible channels have been proposed to interpret experimental observation, but many details of photochromic mechanism remain ambiguous. In this work we have employed a series of electronic structure methods (OM2/MRCI, DFT, TDDFT, RI-CC2, DFT/MRCI, and CASPT2) to comprehensively study excited state properties, photocyclization, and photoreversion dynamics of 1,2-dicyano[2,2]metacyclophan-1-ene. On the basis of optimized stationary points and minimum-energy conical intersections, we have refined experimentally proposed photochromic mechanism. Only an S₁/S₀ minimum-energy conical intersection is located; thus, we can exclude the third channel experimentally proposed. In addition, we find that both photocyclization and photoreversion processes use the same S₁/S₀ conical intersection to decay the S₁ system to the S₀ state, so we can unify the remaining two channels into one. These new insights are verified by our OM2/MRCI nonadiabatic dynamics simulations. The S₁ excited-state lifetimes of photocyclization and photoreversion are estimated to be 349 and 453 fs, respectively, which are close to experimentally measured values: 240 ± 60 and 250 fs in acetonitrile solution. The present study not only interprets experimental observations and refines previously proposed mechanism but also provides new physical insights that are valuable for future experiments.

Semiempirical Quantum-Chemical Orthogonalization-Corrected Methods: Theory, Implementation, and Parameters

Semiempirical orthogonalization-corrected methods (OM1, OM2, and OM3) go beyond the standard MNDO model by explicitly including additional interactions into the Fock matrix in an approximate manner (Pauli repulsion, penetration effects, and core–valence interactions), which yields systematic improvements both for ground-state and excited-state properties. In this Article, we describe the underlying theoretical formalism of the OMx methods and their implementation in full detail, and we report all relevant OMx parameters for hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and fluorine. For a standard set of mostly organic molecules commonly used in semiempirical method development, the OMx results are found to be superior to those from standard MNDO-type methods. Parametrized Grimme-type dispersion corrections can be added to OM2 and OM3 energies to provide a realistic treatment of noncovalent interaction energies, as demonstrated for the complexes in the S22 and S66×8 test sets.

We have employed combined electronic structure calculations and “on-the-fly” fewest switches surface-hopping dynamics simulations to study the S₁ excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and decay dynamics of 4-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)pyridine.

Assessment of approximate computational methods for conical intersections and branching plane vectors in organic molecules

Quantum-chemical computational methods are benchmarked for their ability to describe conical intersections in a series of organic molecules and models of biological chromophores. Reference results for the geometries, relative energies, and branching planes of conical intersections are obtained using ab initio multireference configuration interaction with single and double excitations (MRCISD). They are compared with the results from more approximate methods, namely, the state-interaction state-averaged restricted ensemble-referenced Kohn-Sham method, spin-flip time-dependent density functional theory, and a semiempirical MRCISD approach using an orthogonalization-corrected model. It is demonstrated that these approximate methods reproduce the ab initio reference data very well, with root-mean-square deviations in the optimized geometries of the order of 0.1 Å or less and with reasonable agreement in the computed relative energies. A detailed analysis of the branching plane vectors shows that all currently applied methods yield similar nuclear displacements for escaping the strong non-adiabatic coupling region near the conical intersections. Our comparisons support the use of the tested quantum-chemical methods for modeling the photochemistry of large organic and biological systems.

Photochemistry and photophysics at extended seams of conical intersection

The role of extended seams of conical intersection in excited-state mechanisms is reviewed. Seams are crossings of the potential energy surface in many dimensions where the decay from the excited to the ground state can occur, and the extended seam is composed of different segments lying along a reaction coordinate. Every segment is associated with a different primary photoproduct, which gives rise to competing pathways. This idea is first illustrated for fulvene and ethylene, and then it is used to explain more complex cases such as the dependence of the isomerisation of retinal chromophore isomers on the protein environment, the dependence of the efficiency of the azobenzene photochemical switch on the wavelength of irradiation and the direction of the isomerisation, and the coexistence of different mechanisms in the photo-induced Wolff rearrangement of diazonaphthoquinone. The role of extended seams in the photophysics of the DNA nucleobases and the relationship between two-state seams and three-state crossings is also discussed. As an outlook, the design of optical control strategies based on the passage of the excited molecule through the seam is considered, and it is shown how the excited-state lifetime of fulvene can be modulated by shaping the energy of the seam.

Ultrafast Z → E photoisomerisation of structurally modified furylfulgides

Femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy of Z-fulgides with selected structural motifs revealed fast and direct excited-state dynamics independent of chemical modifications.

Ab initio and semi-empirical Molecular Dynamics simulations of chemical reactions in isolated molecules and in clusters

Recent progress in “on-the-fly” trajectory simulations of molecular reactions, using different electronic structure methods is discussed, with analysis of the insights that such calculations can provide and of the strengths and limitations of the algorithms available.
