Lessons learned from dinuclear lanthanide nano-magnets

Metal-Halide Covalency, Exchange Coupling, and Slow Magnetic Relaxation in Triangular (CpiPr5)3U3X6 (X = Cl, Br, I) Clusters

The actinide elements are attractive alternatives to transition metals or lanthanides for the design of exchange-coupled multinuclear single-molecule magnets. However, the synthesis of such compounds is challenging, as is unraveling any contributions from exchange coupling to the overall magnetism. To date, only a few actinide compounds have been shown to exhibit exchange coupling and single-molecule magnetism. Here, we report triangular uranium(III) clusters of the type (CpiPr5)3U3X (1-X; X = Cl, Br, I; CpiPr5 = pentaisopropylcyclopentadienyl), which are synthesized via reaction of the aryloxide-bridged precursor (CpiPr5)2U2(OPhtBu)4 with excess Me3SiX. Spectroscopic analysis suggests the presence of covalency in the uranium-halide interactions arising from 5f orbital participation in bonding. The dc magnetic susceptibility data reveal the presence of antiferromagnetic exchange coupling between the uranium(III) centers in these compounds, with the strength of the exchange decreasing down the halide series. Ac magnetic susceptibility data further reveal all compounds to exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under zero dc field. In 1-I, which exhibits particularly weak exchange, magnetic relaxation occurs via a Raman mechanism associated with the individual uranium(III) centers. In contrast, for 1-Br and 1-Cl, magnetic relaxation occurs via an Orbach mechanism, likely involving relaxation between ground and excited exchange-coupled states. Significantly, in the case of 1-Cl, magnetic relaxation is sufficiently slow such that open magnetic hysteresis is observed up to 2.75 K, and the compound exhibits a 100-s blocking temperature of 2.4 K. This compound provides the first example of magnetic blocking in a compound containing only actinide-based ions, as well as the first example involving the uranium(III) oxidation state.

Spin dynamics phenomena of a cerium(III) double-decker complex induced by intramolecular electron transfer

Switchable spin dynamic properties in single-molecule magnets (SMMs) via an applied stimulus have applications in single-molecule devices. Many SMMs containing heavy lanthanoid ions with strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy have been reported to exhibit SMM characteristics in the absence of an external magnetic field. On the other hand, SMMs containing light lanthanoid cerium(III) (Ce3+) ions exhibit field-induced slow magnetic relaxation. We investigated the chemical conversion of a diamagnetic Ce4+ ion (4f0) to a paramagnetic Ce3+ ion (4f1) in Ce-phthalocyaninato double-decker complexes (TBA+[Ce(obPc)2]- (1) and TBA+[Ce(Pc)2]- (2)) which exhibit field-induced SMM behaviour due to a 4f1 system. The phthalocyaninato ligands with electron-donating substituents (obPc2- = 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octabutoxyphthalocyaninato) in 1 have a significant effect on the valence state of the Ce ion, which is reflected in its magnetic properties due to the mixed valence state of the Ce ion. Given that Ce double-decker complexes with π-conjugated ligands undergo intramolecular electron transfer (IET) to the Ce ion mixed valence state, characterised by a mixture of 4f0 and 4f1 configurations, we examined the dynamic disorder inherent in IET influencing magnetic relaxation.

Magnetic Switching of Second-Harmonic Generation from Single Cerium-Based Coordination Polymer Microcrystals

Conventional access and modulation of second-harmonic generation (SHG) require precise control of crystal orientation, which faces great mechanical challenges in the case of micro/nanocrystals. Here, we demonstrate the magnetic-field-tunable SHG performance of lanthanide coordination polymer (Ce-BTC CP) microcrystals through field-aligned orientations. The coordination of Ce ions and organic ligands constructs a noncentrosymmetric structure, which not only contributes to a favorable powder SHG efficiency 3.2 times larger than that of the benchmark KH2PO4 (KDP) but also endows the microcrystals with strong magnetic anisotropy. The SHG efficiency (∼0 to 10 × KDP) depends on the orientation of the crystallographic c-axis, whereas magnetic anisotropy always aligns the c-axis with the magnetic field at a specific angle. Accordingly, the SHG can be magnetically switched by field-induced alignments. The adsorption of dyes by Ce-BTC CPs further facilitates the magnetic switching of multicolor fluorescence that can be excited by the SHG. Our work provides a new pathway for achieving SHG modulation at the microscopic level.

Effect of diamagnetic Zn(II) ions on the SMM properties of a series of trinuclear ZnDy2 and tetranuclear Zn2Dy2 (LnIII = Dy, Tb, Gd) complexes: combined experimental and theoretical studies

To study the effect of diamagnetic ions on magnetic interactions, utilizing a compartmental ligand (Z)-2-(hydroxymethyl)-4-methyl-6-((quinolin-8-ylimino)methyl)phenol (LH2), two different series of ZnII-LnIII complexes, namely the trinuclear series of [DyZn2(L)2(μ2-OAc)2(CH3OH)2]·NO3·MeOH (1), [TbZn2(L)2(μ2-OAc)2(CH3OH)2]·NO3·5MeOH·H2O (2), and [GdZn2(L)2(μ2-OAc)2(CH3OH)2]·NO3·MeOH·CHCl3 (3) and the tetranuclear series of [Dy2Zn2(LH)4(NO3)4(μ2OAc)]·NO3·MeOH·H2O (4), [Tb2Zn2(LH)4(NO3)4(μ2-OAc)]·NO3·MeOH·2H2O (5), and [Gd2Zn2(LH)4(NO3)4(μ2-OAc)]·NO3·MeOH·2H2O (6), were synthesized. Trinuclear ZnII-LnIII complexes 1-3 consist of one LnIII ion sandwiched between two peripheral ZnII ions forming a bent type ZnII-DyIII-ZnII array with an angle of 110.64°. Tetranuclear ZnII-LnIII complexes 4-6 are basically a combination of two dinuclear moieties of [LnZn(LH)2(NO3)2]+ connected by one bidentate bridging acetate ion in μ2-OAc coordination mode. The detailed magnetic analysis reveals that complexes 1 and 4 are single molecule magnets having energy barriers of 34.98 K and 46.71 K with relaxation times (τ0) of 5.05 × 10-4 s and 5.24 × 10-4 s, respectively. Ab initio calculations were employed to analyze the magnetic anisotropy and magnetic exchange interaction between the ZnII and LnIII centers with the aim of gaining better insights into the magnetic dynamics of complexes 1-6.

Dipolar Coupling as a Mechanism for Fine Control of Magnetic States in ErCOT-Alkyl Molecular Magnets

The design of molecular magnets has progressed greatly by taking advantage of the ability to impart successive perturbations and control vibronic transitions in 4fn systems through the careful manipulation of the crystal field. Herein, we control the orientation and rigidity of two dinuclear ErCOT-based molecular magnets: the inversion-symmetric bridged [ErCOT(μ-Me)(THF)]2 (2) and the nearly linear Li[(ErCOT)2(μ-Me)3] (3). The conserved anisotropy of the ErCOT synthetic unit facilitates the direction of the arrangement of its magnetic anisotropy for the purposes of generating controlled internal magnetic fields, improving control of the energetics and transition probabilities of the electronic angular momentum states with exchange biasing via dipolar coupling. This control is evidenced through the introduction of a second thermal barrier to relaxation operant at low temperatures that is twice as large in 3 as in 2. This barrier acts to suppress through-barrier relaxation by protecting the ground state from interacting with stray local fields while operating at an energy scale an order of magnitude smaller than the crystal field term. These properties are highlighted when contrasted against the mononuclear structure ErCOT(Bn)(THF)2 (1), in which quantum tunneling of the magnetization processes dominate, as demonstrated by magnetometry and ab initio computational methods. Furthermore, far-infrared magnetospectroscopy measurements reveal that the increased rigidity imparted by successive removal of solvent ligands when adding bridging methyl groups, along with the increased excited state purity, severely limits local spin-vibrational interactions that facilitate magnetic relaxation, manifesting as longer relaxation times in 3 relative to those in 2 as temperature is increased.

Single-molecule magnet behavior in heterometallic decanuclear [Ln2Fe8] (Ln = Y, Dy, Ho, Tb, Gd) coordination clusters

Five decanuclear lanthanide-iron clusters, formulated as [Ln2Fe8(hmp)10(μ2-OH)4(μ3-OH)2(μ4-O)4(H2O)6]·6ClO4·xH2O (x ≈ 8, Ln = Y for 1; x ≈ 6, Ln = Dy for 2; x ≈ 6, Ln = Ho for 3; x ≈ 7, Ln = Tb for 4; x ≈ 7, Ln = Gd for 5, Hhmp = 2-(hydroxymethyl)pyridine), have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Single-crystal structural analysis reveals that the cluster consists of six face-sharing defective cubane units. Dynamic magnetic investigations indicated that cluster 2 exhibits single-molecule magnet behavior under a zero dc field eliciting an effective energy barrier of Ueff = 17.76 K and a pre-exponential factor of τ0 = 7.93 × 10-8 s. Investigation of the performance of a series of FeIII-DyIII SMMs indicates that the relatively low energy barrier in 2 is associated with the weak ferromagnetic coupling between FeIII and DyIII ions, while the strength of ferromagnetic interaction in these clusters is mainly related to the bond distances between DyIII and O atoms coordinated to FeIII ions. Clusters 3 and 4 exhibit similar dual relaxation pathways under their respective optimal external applied dc field, where the direct relaxation process occurs in the low-frequency area, which impedes the extraction of the Ueff, while the secondary relaxation process appears at a higher frequency, which is probably a connection with intermolecularly driven relaxation. Our findings offer a magneto-structural correlation model for further investigating the single-molecule magnet behavior in lanthanide-iron systems.

Origin of Weak Magnetic Coupling in a Dimanganese(II) Complex Bridged by the Tetrathiafulvalene-Tetrathiolate Radical

Magnetic exchange coupling (J) between different spin centers plays a crucial role in molecule-based magnetic materials. Direct exchange coupling between an organic radical and a metal is frequently stronger than superexchange through diamagnetic ligands, and the strategy of using organic radicals to engender desirable magnetic properties has been an area of active investigation. Despite significant advances and exciting bulk properties, the magnitude of J for radical linkers bridging paramagnetic centers is still difficult to rationally predict. It is thus important to elucidate the features of organic radicals that govern this parameter. Here, we measure J for the tetrathiafulvalene-tetrathiolate radical (TTFtt3-•) in a dinuclear Mn(II) complex. Magnetometry studies show that the antiferromagnetic coupling in this complex is much weaker than that in related Mn(II)-radical compounds, in contrast to what might be expected for the S-based chelating donor atoms of TTFtt. Experimental and computational analyses suggest that this small J coupling may be attributed to poor overlap between Mn- and TTFtt-based magnetic orbitals coupled with insignificant spin density on the coordinating S-atoms. These factors override any expected increase in J from the comparatively strong S-donors. This work elucidates the magnetic coupling properties of the TTFtt3-• radical for the first time and also demonstrates how multiple competing factors must be considered in rationally designing organic radical ligands for molecular-based magnetic compounds.

Turn-off luminescence sensing, white light emission and magnetic studies of two-dimensional lanthanide MOFs

The lanthanide metal organic framework compounds [Ln(BPTA)1.5(Bpy)]·0.5DMF (Ln = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy; 1a-5a) and [Ln(BPTA)1.5(Phen)]·0.5DMF (Ln = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy; 1b-5b) were prepared by employing 2,5-bis(prop-2-yn-1-yloxy)terephthalic acid (2,5-BPTA) as the primary ligand and 2,2'-bipyridine (1a-5a) and 1,10-phenanthroline (1b-5b) as the secondary ligands. Single-crystal structural studies on [Gd(BPTA)1.5(Bpy)]·0.5DMF (3a) and [Dy(BPTA)1.5(Phen)]·0.5DMF (5b) indicated that the compounds have a two-dimensional structure. The Y compound exhibits blue emission, and the other compounds exhibit emission in the expected regions (λex = 350 nm). White light emission was achieved by careful mixing of the red (Eu3+) and green (Tb3+) components in the blue emitting Y compound. Thus, Y0.96Tb0.02Eu0.02 (bpy) and Y0.939Tb0.06Eu0.001 (phen) were found to show white emission when excited using a wavelength of 350 nm. The introduction of N-N-containing ancillary ligands (i.e., bpy and phen) increased the overall quantum yield (QY) of white light emission to 31% and 43%, respectively. The high QY observed for the Tb and Eu compounds was found to be sensitive and selective for the fluorometric detection of azinphos-methyl pesticide and trinitrophenol (TNP) in an aqueous medium at the ppb level. The same behaviour was observed when utilising the compounds as onsite paper strip sensors. Their magnetic properties were also studied, revealing for the Tb and Dy derivatives slow relaxation of the magnetisation at low temperature. The present study highlights the usefulness of rigid π-conjugated molecules such as 2,2'-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline in enhancing the many utilities of rare-earth-containing MOFs towards white light emission, the sensing of harmful and dangerous substances and magnetic properties.

Field induced single ion magnet behavior in CoII complexes in a distorted square pyramidal geometry

We report three CoII-based complexes with the general formula [CoII(L)(X)2] by changing the halide/pseudo-halide ions [X = NCSe (1SeCN); Cl (2Cl) and Br (3Br)]. The obtained τ5 and CShM values confirm a distorted square pyramidal geometry around the CoII ion in all these complexes. In these three complexes, the central CoII ion is situated above the basal plane of the square pyramidal geometry. The extent of distortion from the ideal SPY-5 geometry differs upon changing the coordinating halide/pseudo-halide ion in these complexes. This essentially results in the alteration of the anisotropic parameter D and hence impacts the magnetic properties in these complexes. This phenomenon has been corroborated with the aid of theoretical investigations. All these complexes display field-induced SIM behaviour with magnetic relaxation occurring through a combination of processes depending on the applied dc magnetic field values and dilution.

Peripheral site modification in a family of dinuclear [Dy2(hynad)2-6(NO3)0-6(sol)0-2]0/2- single-molecule magnets bearing a {Dy2(μ-OR)2}4+ diamond-shaped core and exhibiting dissimilar magnetic dynamics

The first use of the organic chelate N-hydroxy-1,8-naphthalimide (hynadH) in DyIII chemistry has unveiled access to a synthetic 'playground' composed of four new dinuclear complexes, all of which possess the same planar {Dy2(μ-OR)2}4+ diamond-shaped core, resulting from the bridging and chelating capacity of the hynad- groups. The structural stability of the central {Dy2} core has allowed for the modulation of the peripheral coordination sites of the metal ions, and specifically the NO3-/hynad- ratio of capping groups, thus affording the compounds [Dy2(hynad)2(NO3)4(DMF)2] (1), (Me4N)2[Dy2(hynad)2(NO3)6] (2), [Dy2(hynad)4(NO3)2(H2O)2] (3), and [Dy2(hynad)6(H2O)2] (4). Because of the chemical and structural modifications in the series 1-4, the DyIII coordination polyhedra are also dissimilar, comprising the muffin (1 and 3), tetradecahedral (2), and spherical tricapped trigonal prismatic (4) geometries. Complexes 1, 2, and 4 exhibit a ferromagnetic response at low temperatures, while 3 is antiferromagnetically coupled. All compounds exhibit out-of-phase (χ''M) ac signals as a function of ac frequency and temperature, thus behaving as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), in the absence or presence of applied dc fields. Interestingly, the hynad--rich and nitrato-free complex 4, demonstrates the largest energy barrier (Ueff = 69.62(1) K) for the magnetization reversal which is attributed to the presence of the two axial triangular faces of the spherical tricapped trigonal prism by the negatively charged O-atoms of the hynad- ligands.

Hilbert Space in Isotopologue Dy(III) SMM Dimers: Dipole Interaction Limit in [163/164Dy2(tmhd)6(tape)]0 Complexes

Single-molecule magnets are molecular complexes proposed to be useful for information storage and quantum information processing applications. In the quest for multilevel systems that can act as Qudits, two dysprosium-based isotopologues were synthesized and characterized. The isotopologues are [164Dy2(tmhd)6(tape)] (1(I=0)) and [163Dy2(tmhd)6(tape)] (2(I=5/2)), where tmhd = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptandionate and tape = 1,6,7,12-tetraazaperylene. Both complexes showed slow relaxation at a zero applied magnetic field with dominant Orbach and Raman relaxation mechanisms. μSQUID studies at milli-Kelvin temperatures reveal quasi-single ion loops, in contrast with the expected S-shape (near zero field) butterfly loops, characteristic of antiferromagnetically coupled dimeric complexes. Through analysis of the low-temperature data, we find that the interaction operating between Dy(III) is small, leading to a small exchange biasing from the zero-field transition. The resulting indirectly coupled nuclear states are degenerate or possess a small energy difference between them. We, therefore, conclude that for the creation of Qudits with enlarged Hilbert spaces, shorter Dy(III)···Dy(III) distances are deemed essential.

Synthesis and characterization of two self-assembled [Cu6Gd3] and [Cu5Dy2] complexes exhibiting the magnetocaloric effect, slow relaxation of magnetization, and anticancer activity

Two new paths for coordination driven self-assembly reactions under the binding support of 2-((1-hydroxy-2-methylpropan-2-ylimino)methyl)-6-methoxyphenol (H₂L) have been discovered from the reactions of Cu(ClO₄)₂·6H₂O, NEt₃ and GdCl₃/DyCl₃·6H₂O in MeOH/CHCl₃ (2 : 1) medium. A similar synthetic protocol is useful to provide two different types of self-aggregated molecular clusters [Cu₆Gd₃(L)₃(HL)₃(μ₃-Cl)₃(μ₃-OH)₆(OH)₂]ClO₄·4H₂O (1) and [Cu₅Dy₂(L)₂(HL)₂(μ-Cl)₂(μ₃-OH)₄(ClO₄)₂(H₂O)₆](ClO₄)₂·2NHEt₃Cl·21H₂O (2). The adopted reaction procedure established the importance of the HO^- and Cl^- ions in the mineral-like growth of the complexes, derived from solvents and metal ion salts. In the case of complex 1, one Gd^III center has been trapped at the central position of the core upheld by six μ₃-OH and three μ₃-Cl groups, whereas for complex 2 one Cu^II center was trapped using four μ₃-hydroxo and two μ-chlorido groups. The magnetothermal behavior of 1 has been examined for a magnetocaloric effect of -ΔS_m = 11.3 J kg^-1 K^-1 at 2 K for ΔH = 7 T, whereas the magnetic susceptibility measurements of 2 showed slow magnetic relaxation with U_eff = 15.8 K and τ₀ = 9.8 × 10^-7 s in zero external dc field. Cancer cell growth inhibition studies proved the potential of both the complexes with interestingly high activity for the Cu₆Gd₃ complex against human lung cancer cells. Both complexes 1 and 2 also exhibited DNA and human serum albumin (HSA) binding abilities in relation to the involved binding sites and thermodynamics.

Lanthanide-Based Coordination Polymers Molecular Alloys Stability: A Thermochemical Approach

In this study, we investigate the thermodynamics of lanthanide-based coordination polymer molecular alloys. We demonstrate that if lanthanide ions have many chemical similarities, the solubility of homo-lanthanide-based coordination polymers can vary significantly from one lanthanide ion to another. Indeed, we experimentally determine the solubility constants of a series of isostructural homo-lanthanide coordination polymers, with general chemical formula [Ln₂(bdc)₃(H₂O)₄]_∞ with Ln = La-Er plus Y and where bdc^2- symbolizes 1,4-benzene-di-carboxylate. Then, we extend the study to two series of isostructural molecular alloys with general chemical formula [Ln_2xLn'_2 -2x(bdc)₃(H₂O)₄]_∞ with 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 based either on heavy ([Eu_2xTb_2 - 2x(bdc)₃(H₂O)₄]_∞) or light ( [Nd_2xSm_2-2x(bdc)₃(H₂O)₄]_∞) lanthanide ions. We found that whatever the solubility difference of the homo-nuclear compounds is, the configurational entropy is the main driving force of the stabilization of molecular alloys.

Interplay of Anisotropic Exchange Interactions and Single-Ion Anisotropy in Single-Chain Magnets Built from Ru/Os Cyanidometallates(III) and Mn(III) Complex

Two novel 1D heterobimetallic compounds {[Mn^III(SB²⁺)M^III(CN)₆]·4H₂O}_n (SB²⁺ = N,N'-ethylenebis(5-trimethylammoniomethylsalicylideneiminate) based on orbitally degenerate cyanidometallates [Os^III(CN)₆]^3- (1) and [Ru^III(CN)₆]^3- (2) and Mn^III Schiff base complex were synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Their crystal structures consist of electrically neutral, well-isolated chains composed of alternating [M^III(CN)₆]^3- anions and square planar [Mn^III(SB²⁺)]³⁺ cations bridged by cyanide groups. These -ion magnetic anisotropy of Mn^III centers. These results indicate that the presence of compounds exhibit single-chain magnet (SCM) behavior with the energy barriers of Δτ₁/k_B = 73 K, Δτ₂/k_B = 41.5 K (1) and Δτ₁/k_B = 51 K, Δτ₂ = 27 K (2). Blocking temperatures of T_B = 2.8, 2.1 K and magnetic hysteresis with coercive fields (at 1.8 K) of 8000, 1600 Oe were found for 1 and 2, respectively. Theoretical analysis of the magnetic data reveals that their single-chain magnet behavior is a product of a complicated interplay of extremely anisotropic triaxial exchange interactions in M^III(4d/5d)-CN-Mn^III fragments: -J_xS_M^xS_Mn^x-J_yS_M^yS_Mn^y-J_zS_M^zS_Mn^z, with opposite sign of exchange parameters J_x = -22, J_y = +28, J_z = -26 cm^-1 and J_x = -18, J_y = +20, J_z = -18 cm^-1 in 1 and 2, respectively) and single orbitally degenerate [Os^III(CN)₆]^3- and [Ru^III(CN)₆]^3- spin units with unquenched orbital angular momentum in the chain compounds 1 and 2 leads to a peculiar regime of slow magnetic relaxation, which is beyond the scope of the conventional Glaubers's 1D Ising model and anisotropic Heisenberg model.

Combined experimental and theoretical studies on a series of mononuclear LnIII single-molecule magnets: dramatic influence of remote substitution on the magnetic dynamics in Dy analogues

A series of Ln^III complexes of general formula [Ln(H₂L¹)₂(NO₃)₂(H₂O)](NO₃) (1-5) [Ln = Dy (1), Tb (2) Ho (3), Er (4), and Yb (5)] and an analogous Dy^III complex with ligand H₂L², [Dy(H₂L²)₂(NO₃)₃(H₂O)](NO₃) (6), where H₂L¹ and H₂L² stand for (E)-2-[(2-hydroxyphenyl)iminomethyl]-6-methoxy-4-methylphenol and (E)-2-[(2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)iminomethyl]-6-methoxy-4-methylphenol, respectively, have been synthesized and magneto-structurally characterized. All these complexes are isostructural and isomorphous, in which the zwitterionic form of the ligands predominantly coordinate the metal centers. The magnetic study revealed that complex 3 displays negligible SMM behaviour, while 1 and 6 are zero field SMMs, the performance of which can largely be improved in the presence of an applied dc field by lowering under barrier relaxation processes, and finally 2, 4, and 5 are field-induced SMMs. The most remarkable observation in the present study is the dramatically-enhanced SMM performance in 6 compared to 1, achieved by only a remote methyl substitution at the ligand framework to increase the intermolecular separation. Although SINGLE_ANISO ab initio calculations for 1 and 6 are very similar, the POLY_ANISO module revealed weak dipolar interactions in both the compounds but significant antiferromagnetic interaction in 1, thereby justifying the experimental fact. The present work discloses that even a small substitution such as a methyl group can adequately increase the intermolecular separation, leading to several-fold enhanced effective energy barrier.

Influence of ligand substitution and the solvent effect on the structures and magnetic properties of dinuclear Dy2 supramolecular architectures constructed with the bis-β-diketonate-Dy2 building block as a metalloligand

Based on the bis-β-diketonate-Dy₂ metalloligand [Dy₂(pbth)₄]·2Et₃N (1, pbth = (3z,3'z)-4,4'-(1,3-phenylene)bis(1,1,1-trifluoro-4-hydroxybut-3-en-2-one)), six dinuclear complexes with eight-coordinated geometries were synthesized solvothermally through different capping N-donor coligands or solvent systems. These complexes are namely [Dy₂(pbth)₃(Phen)₂]·2C₂H₅OH (2), [Dy₂(pbth)₃(BPhen)₂]·2C₂H₅OH (3), [Dy₂(pbth)₃(Dppz)₂]·2C₂H₅OH (4), [Dy₂(pbth)₃(Dppz)₂]·2CH₃OH (4a), [Dy₂(pbth)₃(4-Dmbp)₂]·CH₃OH·C₂H₅OH (5) and [Dy₂(pbth)₃(5-Dmbp)₂]·CH₃OH (6) (Phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, BPhen = 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline, dppz = dipyrido [3,2-a:2',3'-c] phenazine, 4-Dmbp = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl, 5-Dmbp = 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl), respectively. In the synthetic processes of 2-6, one of four bis-β-diketonate ligands in the metalloligand is replaced by two capping N-donor coligands. The coordination geometries, metal distances and M-L-M torsion angles of the synthesized complexes are perceptibly fine-tuned by the modification of the capping N-donor coligands or the latticed solvent molecules. Systematic magnetic investigations indicate the different magnetic relaxation dynamics of 1-6. Complex 1 displays no characteristics of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), while complexes 2-6 exhibit SMM behaviours in the absence of a static magnetic field. Complexes 2 and 3 possess effective energy barriers (U_eff) of 110.18 (2) K and 133.21 (4) K, respectively. Theoretical analysis based on ab initio calculation provides some interpretations of experimental observation.

Pentagonal-bipyramidal 4d and 5d complexes with unquenched orbital angular momentum as a unique platform for advanced single-molecule magnets: current state and perspectives

This article overviews the current state and prospects of the concept of advanced single-molecule magnets (SMMs) based on low-spin (S = 1/2) pentagonal-bipyramidal (PBP) 4d³ and 5d³ complexes with unquenched orbital angular momentum. This approach is based on the unique property of PBP 4d³ and 5d³ complexes to cause highly anisotropic spin coupling of perfect uniaxial symmetry, -J_zSziSzj - J_xy(SxiSxj + SyiSyj), regardless of the local geometric symmetry. The M(4d/5d)-M(3d) exchange-coupled pairs in the apical positions of the PBP complexes produce Ising-type exchange interactions (|J_z| > |J_xy|), which serve as a powerful source of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of a SMM cluster. In polynuclear heterometallic 4d/5d-3d complexes embodying PBP 4d/5d units and high-spin 3d ions, anisotropic Ising-type exchange interactions produce a double-well potential with high energy barriers U_eff, which is controlled by the anisotropic exchange parameters J_z, J_xy. Theoretical analysis shows that the barrier is proportional to the difference |J_z - J_xy| and to the number n of the apical 4d/5d-3d pairs in a SMM cluster, U_eff ∝ |J_z - J_xy|n, which provides an opportunity to scale up the barrier U_eff and blocking temperature T_B up to the record values. A novel family of 4d/5d complexes with forced PBP coordination provided by structurally rigid planar pentadentate Schiff-base ligands in the equatorial plane is discussed as a better alternative to the cyanometallates. The possibility of a significant increase in the anisotropic exchange parameters J_z, J_xy in PBP complexes with monoatomic apical μ-bridging ligands is examined. The basic principles of molecular engineering the highest barrier through anisotropic exchange interactions of PBP 4d/5d complexes are formulated. The theoretical and experimental results taken together indicate that the concept of high-performance SMMs based on 4d/5d PBP complexes with unquenched orbital angular momentum is an attractive alternative to the currently dominant lanthanide-based SMM strategy.

Differentiable Formation of Chiroptical Lanthanide Heterometallic Lnn Ln'4-n (L6 ) (n=0-4) Tetrahedra with C2 -Symmetrical Bis(tridentate) Ligands

Construction of lanthanide heterometallic complex is important for engineering multifunction molecular containers. However, it remains a challenge because of the similar ionic radii of lanthanides. Herein we attempt to prepare chiral lanthanide heterometallic tetrahedra. Upon crystallization with a mixture of [Eu2 L3 ] and [Ln2 L3 ] (Ln=Gd, Tb and Dy) helicates, a mixture of heterometallic Eun Ln'4-n (L6 ) (n=0-4) tetrahedra was prepared. Selective formation of heterometallic tetrahedron was observed as MS deconvolution results deviated from statistical results. The formation of heterometallic tetrahedron was found to be sensitive to ionic radii as well as the ratio of the two helicates used in the crystallization.

Rigid N3O2-Pentadentate Ligand-Assisted Octacoordinate Mononuclear Ln(III) Complexes: Syntheses, Characterization, and Slow Magnetization Relaxation

A series of air-stable mononuclear octacoordinate Ln(III) complexes, [(L)Ln(TPPO)₃]OTf (Ln = Y (1·Y); Gd (1·Gd); Tb (1·Tb); Dy (1·Dy); Ho (1·Ho); and Er (1·Er)) and [(L)Ln(TPPO)(NO₃)] (Ln = Y (2·Y) and Dy (2·Dy)), are synthesized employing a rigid N₃O₂-pentadentate chelating ligand as the basis ligand and meridional ancillary ligands (where H₂L = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis-benzoylhydrazone, TPPO = triphenylphosphine oxide, and OTf^- = trifluoromethanesulfonate). All the complexes are synthesized under aerobic conditions and characterized comprehensively by spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic techniques. Magnetic property investigation on the polycrystalline solid samples of 1·Ln (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er) and 2·Dy are reported. A field-induced single-molecule magnet behavior was observed for the Dy derivatives. 1·Dy exhibits the highest effective energy barrier of magnetization reversal, U _eff/k _B = 47 K under H _dc = 1 kOe among the complexes presented herein.

A Tetranuclear Dysprosium Schiff Base Complex Showing Slow Relaxation of Magnetization

A tetranuclear dysprosium Schiff base complex was isolated by reacting dysprosium chloride with 2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde and 2-(aminomethyl)pyridine in-situ under basic conditions. The isolated Dy(III) complex was characterized by elemental analyses, single crystal X-ray diffraction and molecular spectroscopy. The complex crystallizes in the triclinic space group P-1 with unit cell parameters of a = 10.2003 (4), b = 13.8602 (5), c = 14.9542 (6), α = 94.523 (3), β = 109.362 (4), and γ = 99.861 (3). The magnetic properties of 1 have been investigated by DC and AC susceptibility measurements. The DC measurements reveal weak exchange coupling of antiferromagnetic nature. In the AC measurement, the complex shows a slow relaxation of magnetization in the absence of an external magnetic field.

A Sodium Sodate as Precursor for Lanthanide Bis(4-R-benzoxazol-2-yl)methanide Single-Molecule Magnets

From the sodium sodate precursor [(Na(thf)₆][Na{(4-Me-NCOC₆H₃)₂CH}₂] (1) three isostructural dinuclear lanthanide complexes [(μ-Cl)Ln^III{(4-MeNCOC₆H₃)₂CH}₂]₂ with Ln = Gd (2), Dy (3), and Er (4) based on the N,N'-chelating monoanionic bis(4-methylbenzoxazol-2-yl)methanide ligand (titled "Mebox") were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction and magnetic measurements. The sodium precursor 1 was analyzed via X-ray diffraction and diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy experiments (DOSY-NMR) in order to investigate its aggregation in solution and the solid state. The sodium analog [(thf)₃Na(NCOC₆H₄)₂CH] (1') based on the bis(benzoxazol-2-yl)-methanide ligand (titled "box") was prepared and analyzed for comparison reasons. From the lanthanide derivatives 2-4, the Dy^III complex 3 displays slow relaxation of magnetization at zero field, with a relaxation barrier of U = 315.7 cm^-1. The coupling strength between the two lanthanide centers was estimated with the Gd^III equivalent 2, giving a weak antiferromagnetic coupling of J = -0.035 cm^-1.

One-Dimensional Gadolinium (III) Complexes Based on Alpha- and Beta-Amino Acids Exhibiting Field-Induced Slow Relaxation of Magnetization

Gadolinium (III) complexes exhibiting slow relaxation of magnetization are uncommon and have been much less studied than other compounds based on anisotropic lanthanide (III) ions. We prepared two one-dimensional gadolinium (III) complexes based on α-glycine (gly) and β-alanine (β-ala) amino acids, with the formula {[Gd2(gly)6(H2O)4](ClO4)6·5H2O}n (1) and {[Gd2(β-ala)6(H2O)4](ClO4)6·H2O}n (2), which were magneto-structurally characterized. Compounds 1 and 2 crystallize in the triclinic system (space group Pī). In complex 1, two Gd (III) ions are eight-coordinate and bound to six oxygen atoms from six gly ligands and two oxygen atoms from two water molecules, the metal ions showing different geometries (bicapped trigonal prism and square antiprism). In complex 2, two Gd (III) ions are nine-coordinate and bound to seven oxygen atoms from six β-ala ligands and two oxygen atoms from two water molecules in the same geometry (capped square antiprism). Variable-temperature dc magnetic susceptibility measurements performed on microcrystalline samples of 1 and 2 show similar magnetic behavior for both compounds, with antiferromagnetic coupling between the Gd (III) ions connected through carboxylate groups. Ac magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal slow relaxation of magnetization in the presence of an external dc field in both compounds, hence indicating the occurrence of the field-induced single-molecule magnet (SMM) phenomenon in both 1 and 2.

Coordination-Directed Self-Assembly of Functional Polynuclear Lanthanide Supramolecular Architectures

Lanthanide supramolecular chemistry is a fast growing and intriguing research field due to the unique photophysical, magnetic, and coordination properties of lanthanide ions (Ln^III). Compared with the intensively investigated mononuclear Ln-complexes, polymetallic lanthanide supramolecular assemblies offer more structural superiority and functional advantages. In recent decades, significant progress has been made in polynuclear lanthanide supramolecules, varying from structural evolution to luminescent and magnetic functional materials. This review summarizes the design principles in ligand-induced coordination-driven self-assembly of polynuclear Ln-structures and intends to offer guidance for the construction of more elegant Ln-based architectures and optimization of their functional performances. Design principles concerning the water solubility and chirality of the lanthanide-organic assemblies that are vital in extending their applications are emphasized. The strategies for improving the luminescent properties and the applications in up-conversion, host-guest chemistry, luminescent sensing, and catalysis have been summarized. Magnetic materials based on supramolecular assembled lanthanide architectures are given in an individual section and are classified based on their structural features. Challenges remaining and perspective directions in this field are also briefly discussed.

A nonsymmetric Dy2 single-molecule magnet with two relaxation processes triggered by an external magnetic field: a theoretical and integrated EPR study of the role of magnetic-site dilution

The 1 : 2 reaction between Dy(O₂CMe)₃·4H₂O and 1-acetyl-2-napthol (LH) in MeOH has provided access to the complex [Dy₂L₆(MeOH)]·MeOH (1·MeOH) in a good yield. The structures of the isomorphous complex 1·MeOH and its doped diamagnetic yttrium analogue [Dy_0.14Y_1.86L₆(MeOH)]·MeOH (Dy@Y2) have been determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and characterized based on elemental analyses, IR spectra, and powder X-ray patterns. Combined dc and ac magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization data for 1 suggest that this complex shows slow magnetic relaxation. Under a 0 Oe dc field, a single relaxation mechanism is seen while two magnetization relaxation processes are evident under a 1500 G external magnetic field. The fit to the Arrhenius law has been performed using the 1.8-10 K ac data, affording an effective barrier for the magnetization reversal of 13 K and 7 K under the external dc field. Theoretical studies have been performed using ab initio and density functional methodologies to understand the electronic structure and the magnetic relaxation dynamics resulting from the single Dy^III ion as well as from the dinuclear exchange-coupled states. Rich powder EPR spectra at the X-band and Q-band were obtained from Dy@Y2, as well as from the 1·MeOH dimer, while simulation studies revealed the ferromagnetic nature of the interaction between the Dy^III ions in accordance with theoretical studies.

Significantly Enhancing the Single-Molecule-Magnet Performance of a Dinuclear Dy(III) Complex by Utilizing an Asymmetric Auxiliary Organic Ligand

In this work, we employed an asymmetric auxiliary organic ligand (1,1,1-trifluoroacetylacetone, Htfac) to further regulate the magnetic relaxation behavior of series of Dy₂ single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with a N1,N3-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)diethylenetriamine (H₂L) ligand. Fortunately, an air-stable Dy₂ complex, [Dy₂(L)₂(tfac)₂] (1; Htfac = 1,1,1-trifluoroacetylacetone) was obtained at room temperature. A structural analysis indicated that some Dy-O or Dy-N bond lengths for 1 are not in the range of those for the complexes [Dy^III₂(L)₂(acac)₂]·2CH₂Cl₂ (Dy₂-acac; Hacac = acetylacetone) and [Dy^III₂(L)₂(hfac)₂] (Dy₂-hfac; Hhfac = hexafluoroacetylacetone), although the electron-withdrawing ability of tfac^- is stronger than that of acac^- but weaker than that of hfac^-. Additionally, the Dy-O3/O3a (the two O atoms bridged to Dy^III ions) bond lengths are also affected by the asymmetrical Htfc ligand. This indicated that the charge distribution of the coordination atoms around Dy^III has been modified in 1, which leads to the fine-tuning of the magnetic relaxation behavior of 1. Magnetic studies indicated that the values of effective energy barrier (U_eff) for 1 and its diluted sample (2) are 234.8(3) and 188.0(6) K, respectively, which are both higher than the reported value of 110 K for the complex Dy₂-hfac. More interestingly, 1 exhibits a magnetic hysteresis opening when T < 2.5 K at zero field, while the hysteresis loops of 2 are closed at a zero dc field. This discrepancy is due to the weak intramolecular exchange coupling in 2, which cannot overcome the QTM of the single Dy^III ion. Ab initio calculations for 1 revealed that the charge distributions of the coordination atoms around Dy^III ions were regulated and the intramolecular exchange coupling was indeed improved when the asymmetrical Htfc was employed as a ligand for the synthesis of this kind of Dy₂ SMM.

Magnetic behavior of the novel pentagonal-bipyramidal erbium(III) complex (Et3NH)[Er(H2DAPS)Cl2]: high-frequency EPR study and crystal-field analysis

We report the synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of the new heptacoordinated mononuclear erbium(III) complex (Et₃NH)[Er(H₂DAPS)Cl₂] (H₄DAPS = 2,6-diacetylpyridine bis-(salicylhydrazone)) (1). The coordination polyhedron around the Er(III) ion features a slightly distorted pentagonal bipyramid formed by the pentagonal N₃O₂ chelate ring of the H₂DAPS ligand in the equatorial plane and two apical chloride ligands. Detailed high-frequency/high-field electron paramagnetic resonance (HF-EPR) studies of 1 result in the precise determination of the crystal field (CF) splitting energies (0, 290 and 460 GHz) and effective g-values of the three lowest Kramers doublets (KDs) of the Er(III) ion. The obtained HF-EPR data are in good agreement with the results from CF analysis for the Er(III) ion based on the simulation of the dc magnetic data of 1. The results from dynamic susceptibility measurements indicate that there is no slow relaxation of magnetisation behaviour. This observation is discussed in terms of the electronic structure of 1 obtained from experimental and theoretical results.

Fascinating interlocked triacontanuclear giant nanocages

We report herein three air, thermal and solvent stable interlocked triacontanuclear giant nanocages, generated using a node and spacer concept. Interestingly, the crystal structures of the cages are not only nano-dimensional but also exist in the nano-dimension range, which was corroborated with microscopic images. The combination of microscopic and crystallographic data, in effect, led us to a unique advantageous situation of generating nanomaterials with hard-to-come-by structural information at the molecular level.

Low-Coordinate Dinuclear Dysprosium(III) Single Molecule Magnets Utilizing LiCl as Bridging Moieties and Tris(amido)amine as Blocking Ligands

A low-coordinate dinuclear dysprosium complex {[Dy(N3N)(THF)][LiCl(THF)]}2 (Dy2) with a double bridging ‘LiCl’ moiety and tris(amido)amine (N3N)3− anions as a blocking ligand is synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Thanks to the use of the chelating blocking ligand (N3N)3− equipped with large steric –SiMe3 groups, the coordination sphere of both DyIII ions is restricted to only six donor atoms. The three amido nitrogen atoms determine the orientation of the easy magnetization axes of both DyIII centers. Consequently, Dy2 shows slow magnetic relaxation typical for single molecule magnets (SMMs). However, the effective energy barrier for magnetization reversal determined from the AC magnetic susceptibility measurements is much lower than the separation between the ground and the first excited Kramers doublet based on the CASSCF ab initio calculations. In order to better understand the possible influence of the anticipated intramolecular magnetic interactions in this dinuclear molecule, its GdIII-analog {[Gd(N3N)(THF)][LiCl(THF)]}2 (Gd2) is also synthesized and studied magnetically. Detailed magnetic measurements reveal very weak antiferromagnetic interactions in Gd2. This in turn suggests similar antiferromagnetic interactions in Dy2, which might be responsible for its peculiar SMM behavior and the absence of the magnetic hysteresis loop.

From tetranuclear to pentanuclear [Co-Ln] (Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho) complexes across the lanthanide series: effect of varying sequence of ligand addition

Two new families of cobalt(ii/iii)-lanthanide(iii) coordination aggregates have been reported: tetranuclear [LnCoL₂(N-BuDEA)₂(O₂CCMe₃)₄(H₂O)₂]·(MeOH)_n·(H₂O)_m (Ln = Gd, 1; Tb, 2; Dy, 3; n = 2, m = 10 for 1 and 2; n = 6, m = 2 for 3) and pentanuclear LnCo^IICoL₂(N-BuDEA)₂(O₂CCMe₃)₆(MeOH)₂ (Ln = Dy, 4; Ho, 5) formed from the reaction of two aggregation assisting ligands H₂L (o-vanillin oxime) and N-BuDEAH₂ (N-butyldiethanolamine). A change in preference from a lower to higher nuclearity structure was observed on going across the lanthanide series brought about by the variation in the size of the Ln^III ions. An interesting observation was made for the varying sequence of addition of the ligands into the reaction medium paving the way to access both structural types for Ln = Dy. HRMS (+ve) of solutions gave further insight into the formation of the aggregates via different pathways. The tetranuclear complexes adopt a modified butterfly structure with a more complex bridging network while trapping of an extra Co^II ion in the pentanuclear complexes destroys this arrangement putting the Co-Co-Co axis above the Ln-Ln axis. Direct current (dc) magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal weak antiferromagnetic coupling in 1. Complexes 2 and 5 display no slow magnetic relaxation, whereas complexes 3 and 4 display out-of-phase signals at low temperature in ac susceptibility measurements. All compounds were analyzed with DFT and CASSCF calculations and informations about the single-ion anisotropies and mutual 4f-4f/4f-3d magnetic interactions were derived.

Helicate-to-tetrahedron transformation of chiral lanthanide supramolecular complexes induced by ionic radii effect and linker length

Controlled formation of desired lanthanide supramolecular complexes is challenging because of the difficulties in predicting coordination geometry, as well as a labile coordination number. Herein, we explore the effect of ionic radii and linker length on supramolecular species formation. A helicate-to-tetrahedron transformation occurred between [Ln₂L1₃] and [Ln₄L1₆] (Ln = La, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb and Lu). For six lanthanide ions, the unfavored tetrahedron [La₄L1₆] can only be observed in a concentrated mixture with the helicate [La₂L1₃] where no pure [La₄L1₆] species was isolated via crystallization. For Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, the [Ln₄L1₆] supramolecular tetrahedron can be isolated via crystallization from diisopropyl ether. A similar result was also observed for Lu, but the tetrahedral structure was found to be relatively stable and transformed back to [Lu₂L1₃] much slower upon dissolution.  No tetrahedron formation was observed with L3 giving rise to only [Ln₂L3₃] species, in which L3 contains a longer and more flexible linker compared with that of L1. Results show that the supramolecular transformation in these systems is governed by both the ionic radii as well as the ligand design. Special focus is on both [Eu₂L1₃] and [Eu₄L1₆] which form chiral entities and exhibit interesting circular polarized luminescence.

Single-Ion Anisotropy and Intramolecular Interactions in CeIII and NdIII Dimers

This article reports the syntheses, characterization, structural description, together with magnetic and spectroscopic properties of two isostructural molecular magnets based on the chiral ligand N,N'-bis((1,2-diphenyl-(pyridine-2-yl)methylene)-(R,R/S,S)-ethane-1,2-diamine), L1, of general formula [Ln2(RR-L1)2(Cl6)]·MeOH·1.5H2O, (Ln = Ce (1) or Nd (2)). Multifrequency electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), cantilever torque magnetometry (CTM) measurements, and ab initio calculations allowed us to determine single-ion magnetic anisotropy and intramolecular magnetic interactions in both compounds, evidencing a more important role of the anisotropic exchange for the NdIII derivative. The comparison of experimental and theoretical data indicates that, in the case of largely rhombic lanthanide ions, ab initio calculations can fail in determining the orientation of the weakest components, while being reliable in determining their principal values. However, they remain of paramount importance to set the analysis of EPR and CTM on sound basis, thus obtaining a very precise picture of the magnetic interactions in these systems. Finally, the electronic structure of the two complexes, as obtained by this approach, is consistent with the absence of zero-field slow relaxation observed in ac susceptibility.

A trapped hexaaqua CoII complex between the polyanionic sheets of decavanadate reveals high axial anisotropy and field induced SIM behaviour

In this work, we report an inorganic compound [{Co(H₂O)₆}²⁺{Na₄V₁₀O₂₈}^2-] (1) in which the polyanionic sheets of decavanadate play the role of a diamagnetic matrix that reduces the dipolar-dipolar and spin-spin interactions between [Co(H₂O)₆]⁺² units to suppress the fast tunnelling of magnetization. Structural analysis reveals that each [Co(H₂O)₆]⁺² complex is surrounded by four decavanadates and separated by a large internuclear distance (9 Å). It was also found that the adjacent decavanadates are connected via sodium ions and form a 2D sheet of the inorganic layer in which the [Co(H₂O)₆]²⁺ ions are present in between two layers. Detailed dc (direct current) and ac (alternating current) magnetic measurements disclose the presence of large easy-axis anisotropy (D = -102 cm^-1) and field induced slow magnetic relaxation behaviour with a spin reversal barrier of U_eff = 50 K. Additionally, the temperature dependence of the relaxation time reveals that the Raman and QTM processes mainly play an important role rather than the thermally activated Orbach process in the overall relaxation dynamics of the studied compound. To analyse the electronic structure and magnetic properties of compound 1, ab initio calculations were performed which further support the experimental observations. Notably, the U_eff value of 1 represents the highest energy barrier reported for POM based SMMs with transition metal ions to date.

Dinuclear Lanthanide(III) Complexes from the Use of Methyl 2-Pyridyl Ketoxime: Synthetic, Structural, and Physical Studies

The first use of methyl 2-pyridyl ketoxime (mepaoH) in homometallic lanthanide(III) [Ln(III)] chemistry is described. The 1:2 reactions of Ln(NO3)3·nH2O (Ln = Nd, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy; n = 5, 6) and mepaoH in MeCN have provided access to complexes [Ln2(O2CMe)4(NO3)2(mepaoH)2] (Ln = Nd, 1; Ln = Eu, 2; Ln = Gd, 3; Ln = Tb, 4; Ln = Dy, 5); the acetato ligands derive from the LnIII-mediated hydrolysis of MeCN. The 1:1 and 1:2 reactions between Dy(O2CMe)3·4H2O and mepaoH in MeOH/MeCN led to the all-acetato complex [Dy2(O2CMe)6(mepaoH)2] (6). Treatment of 6 with one equivalent of HNO3 gave 5. The structures of 1, 5, and 6 were solved by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Elemental analyses and IR spectroscopy provide strong evidence that 2-4 display similar structural characteristics with 1 and 5. The structures of 1-5 consist of dinuclear molecules in which the two LnIII centers are bridged by two bidentate bridging (η1:η1:μ2) and two chelating-bridging (η1:η2:μ2) acetate groups. The LnIII atoms are each chelated by a N,N'-bidentate mepaoH ligand and a near-symmetrical bidentate nitrato group. The molecular structure of 6 is similar to that of 5, the main difference being the presence of two chelating acetato groups in the former instead of the two chelating nitrato groups in the latter. The geometry of the 9-coordinate LnIII centers in 1, 5 and 6 can be best described as a muffin-type (MFF-9). The 3D lattices of the isomorphous 1 and 5 are built through H-bonding, π⋯π stacking and C-H⋯π interactions, while the 3D architecture of 6 is stabilized by H bonds. The IR spectra of the complexes are discussed in terms of the coordination modes of the organic and inorganic ligands involved. The Eu(III) complex 2 displays a red, metal-ion centered emission in the solid state; the TbIII atom in solid 4 emits light in the same region with the ligand. Magnetic susceptibility studies in the 2.0-300 K range reveal weak antiferromagnetic intramolecular GdIII…GdIII exchange interactions in 3; the J value is -0.09(1) cm-1 based on the spin Hamiltonian Ĥ = -J(ŜGd1·ŜGd2).

Strong Equatorial Crystal Field Enhances the Axial Anisotropy and Energy Barrier for Spin Reversal Process in Yb2 Single Molecule Magnets

The importance of equatorial crystal fields on magnetic anisotropy of ytterbium single molecule magnets (SMMs) is observed for the first time. Herein, we report three similar dinuclear ytterbium complexes with the formula [Yb₂ (3-OMe-L)₂ (DMF)₂ (NO₃ )₂ ]⋅DMF (1), [Yb₂ (3-H-L)₂ (DMF)₂ (NO₃ )₂ ]⋅DMF⋅H₂ O (2), and [Yb₂ (3-NO₃ -L)₂ (DMF)₂ (NO₃ )₂ ] (3), [where 3-X-H₂ L=N'-(2-hydroxy-3-X-benzylidene)picolinohydrazide, X=OMe (1), H (2) NO₂ (3)]. Detailed magnetic measurements reveal the presence of weak antiferromagnetic interactions between the Yb centers and a field-induced slow relaxation of magnetization in all complexes. A higher energy barrier for spin reversal was observed for complex 1 (U_eff =50 K) and it decreases in the order of 2 (47 K) to 3 (40 K). Notably, complex 1 shows a remarkable energy barrier within the frequency range of 1-850 Hz reported for Yb-based SMMs. Further, ab initio calculations show a higher axial anisotropy and lower quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) in the ground state for 1 compared to 2 and 3. It was also observed that the presence of a strong crystal field in the equatorial plane (when the ∡ O1-Yb-O3 bond angle is close to 90°) enhances the axial anisotropy and improves the SMM behavior in the studied complexes. Both the experimental and theoretical analysis of relaxation dynamics discloses that Raman and QTM play major role on slow relaxation process for all complexes. To provide more insight into the exchange interactions, broken-symmetry DFT calculations were performed.
