Formation of N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine via coupling of the two charge reversed C-N bonds of Me3NO in the presence of an Eu(II) bis(trimethylsilyl)amide complex

An N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) complex of Eu(II) was synthesized via an unprecedented self-aminomethylation of Me3NO in the presence of Eu[N(SiMe3)2]2(THF)2. The neutral TMEDA ligand is formed via the coupling of two charge reversed carbon centres from the same precursor Me3NO. In contrast, the reactions of LnII[N(SiMe3)2]2(THF)2 (Ln = Yb, Sm) with Me3NO led to the oxygen-bridged dinuclear complexes of Ln(III).

Closing a Calix[6]arene-Based Funnel Zn2+ Complex at Its Large Rim Entrance: Consequences on Metal Ion Affinity and Host-Guest Properties

A molecular capsule based on a calix[6]arene core closed at the small rim by a three-point coordinated metal ion and at the large rim by a three-point covalent capping is described. It is derived from a trisimidazole funnel complex capped by a trenamide unit that prevents in/out exchange of guest molecules through the large rim. A detailed comparative study with three different calixarenes provides a unique opportunity for (i) comparing the binding ability of two different coordination sites in well three-dimensional (3D)-structured macrocyclic receptors and (ii) evaluating the impact of a covalent closing of one rim of a funnel receptor while the other rim is closed by weaker coordination bonds. Indeed, this study allowed for highlighting various interesting new features. It is first shown that the trenamide site can bind a metal ion such as Zn²⁺ by itself. This involves a 1:1 coordination of the metal ion to the three carbonyl groups of the amide functions, which undergo trans-to-cis isomerization and are partially embedded in the calix core. When the trisimidazole core is present, the Zn²⁺ ion preferentially binds at the small rim, thus closing the cavity. Guest ligand exchange must then occur through a decoordination/recoordination process of the metal ion. The modification and rigidification of the calixarene conformation induced by the large rim capping strengthen the metal ion coordination at the small rim. This also leads to a selective metallo-receptor that readily binds EtNH₂ under conditions where PrNH₂ is not recognized at all. The increased rigidity of the receptor, however, weakens the host-guest interactions, precluding important induced-fit behaviors that are at work in the parent, large rim opened, funnel complex.

HMNTA Complexes of Tetravalent Metal Ions: On the Roles of Carbonyl Oxygen and Amine Nitrogen in the Stabilization of Gas-Phase M(HMNTA)24+ Complexes

Gas-phase tetrapositively charged M(HMNTA)₂⁴⁺ (M = Zr, Hf, Th, and U) ions were generated via electrospray ionization of the M(ClO₄)₄ and N,N,N',N',N″,N″-hexamethylnitrilotriacetamide (HMNTA) mixtures in acetonitrile. In these complexes, the Zr⁴⁺, Hf⁴⁺, Th⁴⁺, and U⁴⁺ metal centers are coordinated by two neutral HMNTA ligands forming antitriangular prism geometry on the basis of DFT calculations. Bonding analysis reveals that the M⁴⁺ center is stabilized by six carbonyl oxygen atoms, while the interactions between M⁴⁺ and two central amine nitrogen atoms are negligible. This is further confirmed by the calculation results of two tetrapositive model complexes without either central amine nitrogen or carbonyl oxygen atoms, indicating the central nitrogen atom of HMNTA is not necessary in forming tetrapositive metal complexes that can be stabilized in gas phase. Collision-induced dissociation of Zr(HMNTA)₂⁴⁺, Hf(HMNTA)₂⁴⁺, and Th(HMNTA)₂⁴⁺ shows the formation of similar charge reducing products with the oxidation state of metal retaining IV whereas ions with other oxidation states were observed for the fragmentation products of U(HMNTA)₂⁴⁺.

Effect of the aromatic substituent on the para-position of pyridine-bis(oxazoline) sensitizers on the emission efficiency of their EuIII and TbIII complexes

Two efficient lanthanide ion sensitizers 2,6-bis(oxazoline)-4-phenyl-pyridine (PyboxPh, 1) and 2,6-bis(oxazoline)-4-thiophen-2-yl-pyridine (Pybox2Th, 2) were synthesized. 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with cell parameters a = 16.3794(4) Å, b = 7.2856(2) Å, c = 11.7073(3) Å, β = 97.229(1)° and V = 1385.97(6) Å3. 2 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n with cell parameters a = 5.9472(2), b = 16.0747(6), c = 14.3716(5) Å, β = 93.503(1)° and V = 1371.35(8) Å3. Photophysical characterization of 1 shows that its triplet state energy is located at 22 250 cm-1 and efficient energy transfer is observed for EuIII and TbIII. Solutions of [Ln(PyboxPh)3]3+ in dichloromethane display an emission efficiency of 37.2% for Ln[double bond, length as m-dash]Eu and 24.0% for Ln[double bond, length as m-dash]Tb. The excited state lifetimes for EuIII and TbIII are 2.227 ms and 723 μs, respectively. The triplet state energy of 2 is located at 19 280 cm-1 and is therefore too low to efficiently sensitize TbIII emission. However, the sensitization of EuIII is effective, with an emission quantum yield of 14.5% and an excited state lifetime of 714 μs. This shows that the derivatization of the chelator is strongly influenced by the aromatic substituents on the para-position of the pyridine ring. New isostructural 1 : 1 complexes of PyboxPh with EuIII (3) and TbIII (4) were also isolated and crystallize in the triclinic space group P1[combining macron] with cell parameters a = 9.1845(2) Å, b = 10.3327(2) Å, c = 11.9654(2) Å, α = 98.419(1)°, β = 108.109(1)°, γ = 91.791(1)°, V = 1064.08(4) Å3 and a = 7.8052(1) Å, b = 11.8910(1) Å, c = 14.2668(2) Å, α = 72.557(1)°, β = 86.355(1)°, γ = 77.223(1)°, V = 1231.95(3) Å3, respectively.

A water-stable 3D Eu-MOF based on a metallacyclodimeric secondary building unit for sensitive fluorescent detection of acetone molecules

A Eu-MOF with high water stability constructed using a systematic metallacyclodimeric motif as a potential chemical sensor for acetone is reported.

TAME5OX, abiotic siderophore analogue to enterobactin involving 8-hydroxyquinoline subunits: thermodynamic and photophysical studies

The synthesis, thermodynamic and photophysical properties of trivalent metal complexes of biomimetic nonadentate analogue, 5,5'-(2-(((8-hydroxyquinolin-5-yl)methylamino)methyl)-2-methylpropane-1,3-diyl)bis(azanediyl)bis(methylene)diquinolin-8-ol (TAME5OX), have been described. Combination of absorption and emission spectrophotometry, potentiometry, electrospray mass spectrometry, IR, and theoretical investigation were used to fully characterize metal (Fe(+3), Al(+3) and Cr(+3)) chelates of TAME5OX. In solution, TAME5OX forms protonated complexes [M(H3L)](3+) below pH 3.4, which consecutively deprotonates through one to three-proton processes with rise of pH. The formation constants (Logβ11n) of neutral complexes formed at or above physiological pH, have been determined to be 30.18, 23.27 and 22.02 with pM values of 31.16, 18.07 and 18.12 for Fe(+3), Al(+3) and Cr(+3) ions, respectively, calculated at pH 7.4, indicating TAME5OX is a powerful among synthetic metal chelator. The results clearly demonstrate that the ligand in a tripodal orchestration firmly binds these ions over wide pH range and forms distorted octahedral complexes. The binding and the coordination event could be monitored from absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The high thermodynamic stability in water at physiological pH of ferric complex of TAME5OX indicates that these complexes are resistant to hydrolysis and therefore are well suited for the development of device for applications as probes. The ligand displays high sensitive fluorescence enhancement to Al(3+) at pH 7.4, in water. Moreover, TAME5OX can distinguish Al(3+) from Fe(3+) and Cr(3+) via two different sensing mechanisms: photoinduced electron transfer (PET) for Al(3+) and internal charge transfer (ICT) for Fe(3+) and Cr(3+). Density functional theory was employed for optimization and evaluation of vibrational modes, NBO analysis, excitation and emission properties of the different species of metal complexes observed by solution studies.
