Thorium(IV) and Uranium(IV) Thioether and Selenoether Complexes: Synthesis and An-ER2 (E = S, Se) Bonding Comparison

Reactions of the rigid thioether- and selenoether-containing ligand salts [{Li(AE2Ph2)}2] (E = S or Se; AE2Ph2 = 4,5-bis(phenylchalcogenido)-2,7,9,9-tetramethylacridanide) with ThCl4(dme)2 or UCl4 (for E = Se) afforded the actinide chalcogenoether complexes [(AE2Ph2)2ThCl2] (E = S (1), Se (2)), and [(ASe2Ph2)2UCl2] (3). X-ray crystal structures of 1-3 revealed tetravalent actinide cations complexed to two κ3-coordinated AE2Ph2 ligands, with Th-ER2 and U-ER2 distances below the sum of the covalent radii. Complexes 1-3 provide extremely rare examples of thorium-thioether, thorium-selenoether, and uranium-selenoether bonds, and 1 and 2 contain the shortest known Th-SR2 and Th-SeR2 distances. DFT and QTAIM calculations confirm the presence of significant An(IV)-ER2 interactions in 1-3 and provide insight into the extent of covalency in the An-ER2 bonds.

A Synthetic, Structural, Spectroscopic, and Computational Study of Alkali Metal-Thioether, -Selenoether, and -Telluroether Interactions

The rigid thioether- and selenoether-containing pro-ligands, 4,5-bis(phenylsulfido)-2,7,9,9-tetramethylacridan (H[AS2Ph2] (1)) and 4,5-bis(phenylselenido)-2,7,9,9-tetramethylacridan (H[ASe2Ph2] (2)), were deprotonated with one equiv of nBuLi to afford dimeric lithium complexes [Li(AE2Ph2)]2 (E = S (3), Se (4)) or with one equiv of KCH2Ph to afford the previously reported potassium complexes [K(AS2Ph2)(dme)]x (5) and [K(ASe2Ph2)(dme)2] (6). Attempts to prepare a direct telluroether analogue of compounds 1-2 were unsuccessful. However, the bulky selenoether- and telluroether-containing pro-ligands 4,5-bis(2,4,6-triisopropylphenylselenido)-2,7,9,9-tetramethylacridan (H[ASe2Tripp2] (7)) and 4,5-bis(2,4,6-triisopropylphenyltellurido)-2,7,9,9-tetramethylacridan (H[ATe2Tripp2] (8)) were accessed via the reaction of 4,5-dibromo-2,7,9,9-tetramethylacridan with three equiv of nBuLi, followed by the addition of two equiv of the corresponding diaryl dichalcogenide and quenching with dilute HCl(aq). The new selenoether- and telluroether-containing pro-ligands were subsequently deprotonated using KCH2Ph to afford [K(AE2Tripp2)(dme)2] (E = Se (9), Te (10)). Compounds 1-10 were characterized by 1H, 13C{1H}, 77Se{1H}, 125Te{1H}, and 7Li NMR spectroscopy, where applicable, and single-crystal X-ray structures were obtained for all lithium and potassium complexes (3-6 and 9-10). DFT calculations were also performed to assess the nature of bonding between the hard group 1 cations and the soft chalcogenoethers.

Rare earth dialkyl cations and monoalkyl dications supported by a rigid neutral pincer ligand: synthesis and ethylene polymerization

A palladium-catalyzed coupling reaction between 4,5-dibromo-2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthene and 2 equiv. of 1,3-diisopropylimidazolin-2-imine afforded the rigid neutral 2,7-di-tert-butyl-4,5-bis(1,3-diisopropylimidazolin-2-imino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene (XII2) pincer ligand. Reaction of XII2 with YCl3(THF)3.5 provided [(XII2)YCl3] (1). However, compound 1 failed to react cleanly with 3 equiv. of LiCH2SiMe3, and the reaction of XII2 with [Y(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2] afforded a complex mixture of products. To access group 3 alkyl complexes without the intermediacy of [(XII2)M(CH2SiMe3)3], the XII2 ligand was protonated using [H(OEt2)2][B(C6F5)4] to form [H(XII2)][B(C6F5)4], and subsequent reaction with [M(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2] (M = Y, Sc) directly afforded the cationic scandium and yttrium dialkyl complexes [(XII2)M(CH2SiMe3)2][B(C6F5)4] {M = Y (2) and Sc (3)}. Reaction of 3 with B(C6F5)3 in C6D5Br afforded dicationic [(XII2)Sc(CH2SiMe2CH2SiMe3)][MeB(C6F5)3][B(C6F5)4] (4) featuring a CH2SiMe2CH2SiMe3 ligand, formed as a result of methyl anion abstraction from silicon, with concomitant migration of the neighbouring CH2SiMe3 group from scandium to silicon. The MeB(C6F5)3 anion in 4 forms a contact ion pair. By contrast, reaction of 1 with [CPh3][B(C6F5)3] in C6D5Br/toluene or o-C6H4F2/toluene afforded dicationic [(XII2)Sc(CH2SiMe3)(ηx-toluene)n][B(C6F5)4]2 (5). Compounds 2-4 showed negligible ethylene polymerization activity, whereas 5 is highly active (up to 870 kg mol-1 h-1 atm-1 in o-C6H4F2/toluene under 1 atm of ethylene at room temperature).

Uranium(IV) Thio- and Selenoether Complexes: Syntheses, Structures, and Computational Investigation of U-ER2 Interactions

Rigid thioether- and selenoether-containing pincer proligands H[AS₂ Ph 2 ] (1) and H[ASe₂ Ph 2 ] (2) were synthesized, and deprotonation provided the potassium salts [K(AS₂ Ph 2 )(dme)] (3) and [K(ASe₂ Ph 2 )(dme)₂ ] (4). Reaction of two equivalents of 3 or 4 with [UI₄ (dioxane)₂ ] afforded the uranium thioether complex [(AS₂ Ph 2 )₂ UI₂ ] (5) and the first example of a uranium-selenoether complex, [(ASe₂ Ph 2 )₂ UI₂ ] (6). X-ray structures revealed distorted square antiprismatic geometries in which the AE₂ Ph 2 ligands are κ³ -coordinated. The nature of the U-ER₂ bonding in 5 and 6, as well as methyl-free analogues of 5 and 6 and a hypothetical ether analogue, was investigated computationally (including NBO, AIM, and ELF calculations) illustrating increasing covalency from O to S to Se.

Recent developments in highly basic N-heterocyclic iminato ligands in actinide chemistry

In the last decade, major conceptual advances in the chemistry of actinide molecules and materials have been made to demonstrate their distinct reactivity profiles as compared to lanthanide and transition metal compounds, but some difficult questions remain concerning the intriguing stability of low-valent actinide complexes, and the importance of the 5f-orbitals in reactivity and bonding. The imidazolin-2-iminato moiety has been extensively used in ligands for the advancement of actinide chemistry owing to its unique capability of stabilizing the reactive and highly electrophilic metal ions by virtue of its strong electron donation and steric tunability. The current review article describes recent developments in the chemistry of light actinide metal ions (thorium and uranium) bearing these N-heterocyclic iminato moieties as supporting ligands. In addition, the effect of ring expansion of the N-heterocycle on the catalytic aptitude of the organoactinides is also described herein. The synthesis and reactivity of actinide complexes bearing N-heterocyclic iminato ligands are presented, and promising apposite applications are also presented. The current review focuses on addressing the catalytic behavior of actinide complexes with oxygen-containing substrates such as in the Tishchenko reaction, hydroelementation processes, and polymerization reactions. Actinide complexes have also found new catalytic applications, as demonstrated by the potent chemoselective carbonyl hydroboration and tandem proton-transfer esterification (TPTE) reaction, featuring coupling between an aldehyde and alcohol.

Tripyridinophane Platform Containing Three Acetate Pendant Arms: An Attractive Structural Entry for the Development of Neutral Eu(III) and Tb(III) Complexes in Aqueous Solution

We report a detailed characterization of Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺ complexes derived from a tripyridinophane macrocycle bearing three acetate side arms (H₃tpptac). Tpptac^3- displays an overall basicity (∑ log K_i^H) of 24.5, provides the formation of mononuclear ML species, and shows a good binding affinity for Ln³⁺ (log K_LnL = 17.5-18.7). These complexes are also thermodynamically stable at physiological pH (pEu = 18.6, pTb = 18.0). It should be noted that the pGd value of Gd-tpptac (18.4) is only slightly lower than that of commercially available MRI contrast agents such as Gd-dota (pGd = 19.2). Moreover, a very good selectivity for these ions over the endogenous cations (log K_CuL = 14.4, log K_ZnL = 12.9, and log K_CaL = 9.3) is observed. The X-ray structure of the terbium complex shows the metal coordinated by the nine N₆O₃ donor set of the ligand and one inner-sphere water molecule. DFT calculations result in two Eu-tpptac structures with similar bond energies (ΔE = 0.145 eV): one structure in which the water is coordinated to the metal ion and one structure in which the water molecule is farther away from the ion, bound to the ligand with an OH-π bond. By detailed luminescence experiments, we demonstrate that the europium complex in aqueous solution presents a hydration equilibrium between nine-coordinate, dehydrated [Eu-tpptac]⁰ and ten-coordinate, monohydrated [Eu-tpptac(H₂O)]⁰ species. A similar trend is observed for the terbium complex. Despite the presence of this hydration equilibrium, the H₃tpptac ligand sensitizes Eu³⁺ and Tb³⁺ luminescence efficiently in buffered water at physiological pH. Particularly, the terbium complex displays a long excited-state lifetime of 2.24 ms and an overall quantum yield of 33% with a brightness of 3600 M^-1 cm^-1. Such features of Ln³⁺ complexes of H₃tpptac indicate that this platform appears to be particularly appealing for the further development of luminescent lanthanide labels.

Thorium(iv) alkyl and allyl complexes of a rigid NON-donor pincer ligand with flanking 1-adamantyl substituents

A rigid new pincer pro-ligand, 4,5-bis(1-adamantylamino)-2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthene, is described, with deprotonation and complexation to afford thorium(iv) chloro, alkyl, and allyl derivatives.

Catalytic insertion of E-H bonds (E = C, N, P, S) into heterocumulenes by amido-actinide complexes

We report herein the actinide-mediated insertion of E-H bonds (E = C, N, P, S) into various heterocumulenes including carbodiimides, isocyanates, and isothiocyanates. The precatalysts are prepared by a simple, one-pot procedure using readily available starting materials, and challenging insertions are achieved with excellent selectivity in short reaction times. Spectroscopic data are utilised to propose the active catalytic mechanism and derive thermodynamic activation parameters, which are described in this study. The only example of an actinide-mediated C-H bond insertion into a carbon-heteroatom bond is presented within this study.

Rare Earth Metal Complexes of Bidentate Nitroxide Ligands: Synthesis and Electrochemistry

We report rare earth metal complexes with tri- and bidentate ligands including strongly electron-donating nitroxide groups. The tridentate ligand 1,3,5-tris(2'-tert-butylhydroxylaminoaryl)benzene (H3arene-triNOx) was complexed to cerium(IV) in a 2:1 ligand-to-metal stoichiometry as Ce(Harene-triNOx)2 (1). Cyclic voltammetry of this compound showed stabilization of the tetravalent cerium cation with a Ce(IV/III) couple at E1/2 = -1.82 V versus Fc/Fc(+). On the basis of the uninvolvement of the third nitroxide group in the coordination chemistry with the cerium(IV) cation, the ligand system was redesigned toward a simpler bidentate mode, and a series of rare earth metal-arene-diNOx complexes were prepared with La(III), Ce(IV), Pr(III), Tb(III), and Y(III), [RE(arene-diNOx)2](-) ([2-RE](-), RE = La, Pr, Y, Tb) and Ce(IV)(arene-diNOx)2, where H2arene-diNOx = 1,3-bis(2'-tert-butylhydroxylaminoaryl)benzene. The core structures were isostructural throughout the series, with three nitroxide groups in η(2) binding modes and one κ(1) nitroxide group coordinated to the metal center in the solid state. In all cases except Ce(IV)(arene-diNOx)2, electrochemical analysis described two subsequent, ligand-based, quasi-reversible redox waves, indicating that a stable [N-O•] group was generated on the electrochemical time scale. Chemical oxidation of the terbium complex was performed, and isolation of the resulting complex, Tb(arene-diNOx)2·CH2Cl2 (3·CH2Cl2), confirmed the assignment of the cyclic voltammograms. Magnetic data showed no evidence of mixing between the Tb(III) states and the states of the open-shell ligand.

The strength of actinide-element bonds from the quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules

[AnX(3)](2)(μ-η(2):η(2)-N(2)) (An = Th-Pu; X = F, Cl, Br, Me, H, OPh) have been studied using relativistic density functional theory. Geometric and vibrational data suggest that metal→N(2) charge transfer maximises at the protactinium systems, which feature the longest N-N bonds and the smallest σ(N-N), as a result of partial population of the N-N π* orbitals. There is very strong correlation of the standard quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules (QTAIM) metrics - bond critical point ρ, ∇(2)ρ and H and delocalisation indices - with An-N and N-N bond lengths and σ(N-N), but the correlation with An-N interaction energies is very poor. A similar situation exists for the other systems studied; neutral and cationic actinide monoxide and dioxides, and AnL(3+) and AnL(3)(3+) (L = pyridine (Py), pyrazine (Pz) and triazine (Tz)) with the exception of some of the ∇(2)ρ data, for which moderate to good correlations with energy data are sometimes seen. By contrast, in almost all cases there is very strong correlation of interaction and bond energies with |ΔQ(QTAIM)(An)|, a simple QTAIM metric which measures the amount of charge transferred to or from the actinide on compound formation.

Uranyl-water-containing complexes: solid-state UV-MALDI mass spectrometric and IR spectroscopic approach for selective quantitation

Since primary environmental concept for long storage of nuclear waste involved assessment of water in uranium complexes depending on migration processes, the paper emphasized solid-state matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometric (MS) and IR spectroscopic determination of UO2(NO3)2·6H2O; UO2(NO3)2·3H2O, α-, β-, and γ-UO3 modifications; UO3·xH2O (x = 1 or 2); UO3·H2O, described chemically as UO2(OH)2, β- and γ-UO2(OH)2 modifications; and UO4·2H2O, respectively. Advantages and limitation of vibrational spectroscopic approach are discussed, comparing optical spectroscopic data and crystallographic ones. Structural similarities occurred in α-γ modifications of UO3, and UO2(OH)2 compositions are analyzed. Selective speciation achieved by solid-state mass spectrometry is discussed both in terms of its analytical contribution for environmental quality assurance and assessment of radionuclides, and fundamental methodological interest related the mechanistic complex water exchange of UO3·H2O forms in the gas phase. In addition to high selectivity and precision, UV-MALDI-MS, employing an Orbitrap analyzer, was a method that provided fast steps that limited sample pretreatment techniques for direct analysis including imaging. Therefore, random and systematic errors altering metrology and originating from the sample pretreatment stages in the widely implemented analytical protocols for environmental sampling determination of actinides are significantly reduced involving the UV-MALDI-Orbitrap-MS method. The method of quantum chemistry is utilized as well to predict reliably the thermodynamics and nature of U-O bonds in uranium species in gas and condensed phases.
