Abstract
A mononuclear iridium-based complex with a primary amine group (named Ir-NH2), a mononuclear ruthenium-based complex with a butanoic acid group (named Ru-COOH) and the corresponding heterodinuclear complex containing an iridium and ruthenium center via an amide bond bridge (named Ir-Ru) were designed and successfully synthesized in this study. The photophysical and electrochemical properties and ECL performances of these three metal complexes under various experimental conditions were well characterized. For the first time, the insights from this comprehensive comparison study indicate that the two metal-based subunits with comparable luminescent properties are significant in the design of bimetallic-based multicolor luminophores at the molecular level, which helps us to further understand the emission performances of bimetallic complexes and to rationally design more efficient corresponding organometallic luminophores with multicolor emission for wide applications in the future.

Abstract
Controlling electrochemiluminescence (ECL) color(s) is crucial for many applications ranging from multiplexed bioassays to ECL microscopy. This can only be achieved through the fundamental understanding of high-energy electron-transfer processes in complex and competitive reaction schemes. Recently, this field has generated huge interest, but the effective implementation of multicolor ECL is constrained by the limited number of ECL-active organometallic dyes. Herein, the first self-enhanced organic ECL dye, a chiral red-emitting cationic diaza [4]helicene connected to a dimethylamino moiety by a short linker, is reported. This molecular system integrates bifunctional ECL features (i.e. luminophore and coreactant) and each function may be operated either separately or simultaneously. This unique level of control is enabled by integrating but decoupling both molecular functions in a single molecule. Through this dual molecular reactivity, concomitant multicolor ECL emission from red to blue with tunable intensity is readily obtained in aqueous media. This is done through competitive electron-transfer processes between the helicene and a ruthenium or iridium dye. The reported approach provides a general methodology to extend to other coreactant/luminophore systems, opening enticing perspectives for spectrally distinct detection of several analytes, and original analytical and imaging strategies.

Abstract
The realization of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detection at the single-molecule level is a longstanding goal of ECL assay that requires a novel ECL probe with significantly enhanced luminescence. Here, the synergistic effect of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is observed unprecedentedly in a new cyclometalated dinuclear Ir(III) complex [Ir2(dfppy)4(imiphenH)]PF6 (1·PF6, PF6- = hexafluorophosphate) in which two {Ir(dfppy)2}+ units are bridged by an imiphenH- ligand. The ECL intensity from complex 1·PF6 is 4.4 and 28.7 times as high as that of its reference mononuclear complexes 2 and 3·PF6, respectively. Theoretical calculation reveals that the S0 to S1 excitation is a local excitation in 1·PF6 with two electron-coupled Ir(III) centers, which contributes to the enhanced ECL. The synergistic effect of ECL in 1·PF6 can be used to detect microRNA 21 at the single-molecule level (microRNA 21: UAGCUUAUCAGACUGAUGUUGA), with detectable ECL emission from this complex intercalated in DNA/microRNA 21 duplex as low as 90 helix molecules. The finding of the synergistic effect of ECL will not only provide a novel strategy for the modulation of ECL intensity but also enable the detection of microRNA at the single-molecule level.

Abstract
Ruthenium polypyridyl type complexes are potent photoactive compounds, and have found - among others - a broad range of important applications in the fields of biomedical diagnosis and phototherapy, energy conversion schemes such as dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and molecular assemblies for tailored photo-initiated processes. In this regard, the linkage of RuII polypyridyl-type complexes with specific functional moieties is highly desirable to enhance their inherent photophysical properties, e.g., with a targeting function to achieve cell selectivity, or with a dye or redox-active subunits for energy- and electron-transfer. However, the classical approach of performing ligand syntheses first and the formation of Ru complexes in the last steps imposes synthetic limitations with regard to tolerating functional groups or moieties as well as requiring lengthy convergent routes. Alternatively, the diversification of Ru complexes after coordination (termed "chemistry-on-the-complex") provides an elegant complementary approach. In addition to the Click chemistry concept, the rapidly developing synthesis and purification methodologies permit the preparation of Ru conjugates via amidation, alkylation and cross-coupling reactions. In this regard, recent developments in chromatography shifted the limits of purification, e.g., by using new commercialized surface-modified silica gels and automated instrumentation. This review provides detailed insights into applying the "chemistry-on-the-complex" concept, which is believed to stimulate the modular preparation of unpreceded molecular assemblies as well as functional materials based on Ru-based building blocks, including combinatorial approaches.

Abstract
Previously reported annihilation ECL of mixtures of metal complexes have generally comprised Ir(ppy)3 or a close analogue as a higher energy donor/emitter (green/blue light) and [Ru(bpy)3]2+ or its derivative as a lower energy acceptor/emitter (red light). In contrast, here we examine Ir(ppy)3 as the lower energy acceptor/emitter, by combining it with a second Ir(iii) complex: [Ir(df-ppy)2(ptb)]+ (where ptb = 1-benzyl-1,2,3-triazol-4-ylpyridine). The application of potentials sufficient to attain the first single-electron oxidation and reduction products can be exploited to detect Ir(ppy)3 at orders of magnitude lower concentration, or enhance its maximum emission intensity at high concentration far beyond that achievable through conventional annihilation ECL of Ir(ppy)3 involving comproportionation. Moreover, under certain conditions, the colour of the emission can be selected through the applied electrochemical potentials. We have also prepared a novel Ir(iii) complex with a sufficiently low reduction potential that the reaction between its reduced form and Ir(ppy)3+ cannot populate the excited state of either luminophore. This enabled, for the first time, the exclusive formation of either excited state through the application of higher cathodic or anodic potentials, but in both cases, the ECL was greatly diminished by parasitic dark reactions.

Abstract
A single starting component electrochemiluminescence system from which red, green, blue or white emission can be obtained, depending on the applied potential or the mode of the ECL experiment, is described. The convoluted ECL spectral responses observed at different potentials are readily explained using a 3D-ECL technique, where the ECL spectral profile is continuously monitored as a function of potential during voltammetric scanning. The 3D plots obtained using this technique implicate cross-annihilation ECL reactions involving the complex itself and stable products resulting from its electrolysis. Combining this information with knowledge of the energetic requirements of the various reactions involved, suggests a mechanism involving traces of two emissive products, related to the loss of a methyl group from the triazole moiety. These products, while barely detectable electrochemically, are sufficiently emissive to influence and even dominate the ECL emission under some conditions.

Abstract
Recent development of the phosphorescent cyclometalated iridium(III) chelates has enabled, due to their advantageous electrochemical and photo-physical properties, important breakthroughs in many photonic applications. This particular class of 5d(6) ion complexes has attracted increasing interest because of their potential application in electroluminescence devices with a nearly 100 % internal quantum efficiency for the conversion of electric energy to photons. Similar to electroluminescence, the cyclometalated iridium(III) chelates have been successfully applied in the electricity-to-light conversion by means of the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) processes. The already reported ECL systems utilizing the title compounds exhibit extremely large ECL efficiencies that allow one to envisage many potential application for them, especially in further development of ECL-based analytical techniques. This review, based on recently published papers, focuses on the ECL properties of this very exciting class of organometallic luminophores. The reported work, describing results from fundamental as well as application-oriented investigations, will be surveyed and briefly discussed. Graphical abstract Depending on the chemical nature of the cyclometalated irdium(III) chelate different colours of the emitted light can be produced during electrochemical excitation.

Abstract
A derivative of squaramide (cyclobuta[b]quinoxaline-1, 2(3H, 8H)-dione) has been synthesized for the ratiometric and colorimetric sensing of F(-) in aqueous solution in competitive fashion. With F(-), probe 1 showed a highly selective naked-eye detectable color change along with a characteristic UV-Vis absorbance over other tested ions, which probably originates from the deprotonation occurred between 1 and F(-), as proved by the (1)H NMR titration experiments and DFT calculations.
