Bis-cyanostilbene based fluorescent materials: A rational design of AIE active probe for hypochlorite sensing

In the present investigation cyanostilbene based molecular probes, PCS and PCO, bearing N,N-dimethylthiocarbamate and N,N-dimethylcarbamoyal groups, respectively, have been synthesised. These probes exhibit AIEE activity in their aggregated state in the mixed solvent system of THF: H2O by way of turning on their emission, which has also been observed in powder, neat thin films and hybrid polymer films. While the probe PCO is silent to ClO-, PCS exhibits a significant response towards ClO- rationalised on the basis of HOCl specific oxidation of thiocarbamate, which is also extended to detect ClO- in water samples. Additionally, applicability of the test strips of PCS for rapid on-site detection of ClO- has been demonstrated. The experimental results are supplemented by the theoretical calculations wherever possible.

Julolidine based red emitting ESIPT/AIE active material showing luminescence beyond excimer emission: An "on-off" emission response to Cu2

A new julolidine-fluorene based excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT)/aggregate induced emission (AIE) active Schiff-base (JDF) has been synthesized and evaluated for its photophysical properties in solution and aggregated/solid states. The correlation between the emission behavior and the solid state crystal packing structure revealed the interplay of ESIPT coupled excimer reaction occurring in the solid state, which is one of the rare examples reported so far. For a comprehensive comparison, we synthesized a non-ESIPT methyl derivative (JDF-Me) of JDF capable of showing excimer emission only in the solid state. Further, JDF exhibits normal as well as keto emission in solution, upon addition of water, its poor solvent, that promotes aggregation, the fluorescence emission shows the preponderance of the excimer band in the low energy region. It was also interesting to note that in the solid state (thin films), JDF shows emission beyond the excimer emission, which is wavelength dependent. This is attributed to the formation of diverse clusters leading to the extended delocalization beyond excimers, and represents a clustering-triggered emission ascribing bright red color to the solid JDF. Such mélange of emission characteristics of JDF are responsible for the multicolor emission covering a broad range of electromagnetic spectrum, which is demonstrated by the confocal microscopy images of the JDF recorded in different states. Further, in its aggregated state, JDF recognized Cu²⁺ ions, selectively, manifested in the form of emission quenching via the interaction of Cu²⁺ ions with the oxygen and nitrogen atoms of JDF inhibiting the excimer formation.

A fluorene based probe: Synthesis and "turn-on" water sensitivity of the in-situ formed Cu2+ complex: Application in bio-imaging

A new fluorene based probe (FTH) has been evaluated for its photo-physical properties in solution as well as in the aggregated state/viscous environment. Addition of a poor solvent (water) to the solution of the probe in a good (acetonitrile) solvent significantly enhanced the otherwise weak emission due to aggregation induced emission (AIE). The emission enhancement is also related to the increase in viscosity of the solution, leading to the restricted intramolecular rotation of the peripheral (phenyl) groups. Interestingly, the emission behaviour of the non-emissive in-situ formed Cu²⁺ complex is drastically modulated in the presence of water. The solution of the putative Cu²⁺ complex of the probe turns highly emissive (yellow colour) upon addition of a small fraction of water (up to 7.6 wt %), but the yellow emission diminishes upon increasing higher water fraction. We propose that the initially formed Cu²⁺ complex undergoes hydrolysis in the presence of higher water content releasing the free amine possessing the diaryl amino rotors thus rendering the solution non-emissive. Thus the current probe being reported herein discloses its potential to generate trace water sensitive turn-on Cu²⁺ complex. Additionally, the bio-imaging potential of FTH for live cancer cells and its sensitivity towards intracellular presence of Cu²⁺ ions has been demonstrated.

Synthesis, spectral and third-order nonlinear optical properties of terpyridine Zn(II) complexes based on carbazole derivative with polyether group

Four novel Zn(II) terpyridine complexes (ZnLCl2, ZnLBr2, ZnLI2, ZnL(SCN)2) based on carbazole derivative group were designed, synthesized and fully characterized. Their photophysical properties including absorption and one-photon excited fluorescence, two-photon absorption (TPA) and optical power limiting (OPL) were further investigated systematically and interpreted on the basis of theoretical calculations (TD-DFT). The influences of different solvents on the absorption and One-Photon Excited Fluorescence (OPEF) spectral behavior, quantum yields and the lifetime of the chromophores have been investigated in detail. The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were investigated by open/closed aperture Z-scan measurements using femtosecond pulse laser in the range from 680 to 1080 nm. These results revealed that ZnLCl2 and ZnLBr2 exhibited strong two-photon absorption and ZnLCl2 showed superior optical power limiting property.

Synthesis, characterization and toxicological evaluation of maltodextrin capped cadmium sulfide nanoparticles in human cell lines and chicken embryos

BACKGROUND

Semiconductor Quantum dots (QDs) have become quite popular thanks to their properties and wide use in biological and biomedical studies. However, these same properties entail new challenges in understanding, predicting, and managing potential adverse health effects following exposure. Cadmium and selenium, which are the major components of the majority of quantum dots, are known to be acutely and chronically toxic to cells and organisms. Protecting the core of nanoparticles can, to some degree, control the toxicity related to cadmium and selenium leakage.

RESULTS

This study successfully synthesized and characterized maltodextrin coated cadmium sulfide semiconductor nanoparticles. The results show that CdS-MD nanoparticles are cytotoxic and embryotoxic. CdS-MD nanoparticles in low concentrations (4.92 and 6.56 nM) lightly increased the number of HepG2 cell. A reduction in MDA-MB-231 cells was observed with concentrations higher than 4.92 nM in a dose response manner, while Caco-2 cells showed an important increase starting at 1.64 nM. CdS-MD nanoparticles induced cell death by apoptosis and necrosis in MDA-MD-231 cells starting at 8.20 nM concentrations in a dose response manner. The exposure of these cells to 11.48-14.76 nM of CdS-MD nanoparticles induced ROS production. The analysis of cell proliferation in MDA-MB-231 showed different effects. Low concentrations (1.64 nM) increased cell proliferation (6%) at 7 days (p < 0.05). However, higher concentrations (>4.92 nM) increased cell proliferation in a dose response manner (15-30%) at 7 days. Exposures of chicken embryos to CdS-MD nanoparticles resulted in a dose-dependent increase in anomalies that, starting at 9.84 nM, centered on the heart, central nervous system, placodes, neural tube and somites. No toxic alterations were observed with concentrations of < 3.28 nM, neither in cells nor chicken embryos.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results indicate that CdS-MD nanoparticles induce cell death and alter cell proliferation in human cell lines at concentrations higher than 4.92 nM. We also demonstrated that they are embryotoxic. However, no toxic effects were observed with doses lower than 3.28 nM in neither cells nor chicken embryos. The CdS-MD nanoparticles used in this study can be potentially used in bio-imaging applications. However, further studies using mammalian species are required in order to discard more toxic effects.
