Divergent Synthesis of Chelating Aziridines and Cyclic(Alkyl)(Amino)Carbenes (CAACs) from Pyridyl-Tethered Robust Azomethine Ylides

Azomethine ylides are typically in situ generated synthons for making N-heterocycles through cycloaddition reactions. But an offbeat aspect about them is the isomeric nature of aldiminium-based azomethine ylides and (alkyl/aryl)(amino)carbenes, interconvertible by a formal 1,3-H+ transfer. Herein, two thermally robust azomethine ylides with a N-appended picolyl sidearm are isolated, which cyclize to py aziridines at 80 °C but unprecedentedly result N-pico CAAC-CuCl (CAAC=cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene) complexes when heated with CuCl at merely 60 °C. The pendant Npy , as revealed by computational analysis, plays a crucial role in this unusual 1,3-H+ shift using a deprotonation-protonation sequence, as well as in placing the CuCl at the carbenic site in tandem. The softer nature of Cu(I) is also critical. Chelating CAACs are rare and one with a N-tethered additional donor is priorly unknown. Both N-pico CAAC and py aziridine are bidentate chelators giving highly active cationic Rh(I) catalysts for hydrosilylating unactivated olefins by Et3 SiH. Notably, the py aziridine-Rh(I) is superior than the N-pico CAAC-Rh(I) catalyst.

Mn2(CO)10 and UV light: a promising combination for regioselective alkene hydrosilylation at low temperature

The low temperature regioselective hydrosilylation of various alkenes with (1,1,1,3,5,5,5-heptamethyltrisiloxane) MD^HM is described using Mn₂(CO)₁₀ under UV irradiation with Mn loadings as low as 1 mol%, in the absence of additives and with excellent selectivity and yields. The generation of a manganese radical allowed the anti-Markovnikov hydrosilylation products to be selectively obtained in yields up to 99%.

Ga+-catalyzed hydrosilylation? About the surprising system Ga+/HSiR3/olefin, proof of oxidation with subvalent Ga+ and silylium catalysis with perfluoroalkoxyaluminate anions

Already 1 mol% of subvalent [Ga(PhF)2]+[pf]- ([pf]- = [Al(ORF)4]-, RF = C(CF3)3) initiates the hydrosilylation of olefinic double bonds under mild conditions. Reactions with HSiMe3 and HSiEt3 as substrates efficiently yield anti-Markovnikov and anti-addition products, while bulkier substrates such as HSiiPr3 are less reactive. Investigating the underlying mechanism by gas chromatography and STEM analysis, we unexpectedly found that H2 and metallic Ga0 formed. Without the addition of olefins, the formation of R3Si-F-Al(ORF)3 (R = alkyl), a typical degradation product of the [pf]- anion in the presence of a small silylium ion, was observed. Electrochemical analysis revealed a surprisingly high oxidation potential of univalent [Ga(PhF)2]+[pf]- in weakly coordinating, but polar ortho-difluorobenzene of E 1/2(Ga+/Ga0; oDFB) = +0.26-0.37 V vs. Fc+/Fc (depending on the scan rate). Apparently, subvalent Ga+, mainly known as a reductant, initially oxidizes the silane and generates a highly electrophilic, silane-supported, silylium ion representing the actual catalyst. Consequently, the [Ga(PhF)2]+[pf]-/HSiEt3 system also hydrodefluorinates C(sp3)-F bonds in 1-fluoroadamantane, 1-fluorobutane and PhCF3 at room temperature. In addition, both catalytic reactions may be initiated using only 0.2 mol% of [Ph3C]+[pf]- as a silylium ion-generating initiator. These results indicate that silylium ion catalysis is possible with the straightforward accessible weakly coordinating [pf]- anion. Apparently, the kinetics of hydrosilylation and hydrodefluorination are faster than that of anion degradation under ambient conditions. These findings open up new windows for main group catalysis.

Manganese-Catalyzed Dehydrogenative Silylation of Alkenes Following Two Parallel Inner-Sphere Pathways

We report on an additive-free Mn(I)-catalyzed dehydrogenative silylation of terminal alkenes. The most active precatalyst is the bench-stable alkyl bisphosphine Mn(I) complex fac-[Mn(dippe)(CO)₃(CH₂CH₂CH₃)]. The catalytic process is initiated by migratory insertion of a CO ligand into the Mn–alkyl bond to yield an acyl intermediate which undergoes rapid Si–H bond cleavage of the silane HSiR₃ forming the active 16e^– Mn(I) silyl catalyst [Mn(dippe)(CO)₂(SiR₃)] together with liberated butanal. A broad variety of aromatic and aliphatic alkenes was efficiently and selectively converted into E-vinylsilanes and allylsilanes, respectively, at room temperature. Mechanistic insights are provided based on experimental data and DFT calculations revealing that two parallel reaction pathways are operative: an acceptorless reaction pathway involving dihydrogen release and a pathway requiring an alkene as sacrificial hydrogen acceptor.

A family of rhodium(i) NHC chelates featuring O-containing tethers for catalytic tandem alkene isomerization-hydrosilylation

The rhodium complex Rh(HL)(COD)Cl, 1, L being a functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand with an oxygen-containing pendant arm, has been used as the entry point to synthesize a series of neutral and cationic Rh(i) O,C chelates. While the Rh-carbene interaction is similar in all these 16-electron complexes, structural analysis reveals that the strength of the Rh-O bond is greatly affected by the nature of the O-donor: R-O^- > R-OH > R-OBF₃. These subtle changes in the nature of the O-containing tether are found to be responsible for large differences in the alkene hydrosilylation catalytic activity of these compounds: the stronger the Rh-O interaction, the better the catalytic performances. The most active catalyst, [Rh(L)(COD)], 2, demonstrated good catalytic activity under mild reaction conditions for the hydrosilylation of a range of alkene substrates with the industrially relevant non-activated tertiary silane, 1,1,1,3,5,5,5-heptamethyltrisiloxane (MD^HM). Furthermore, this complex is an effective catalyst for the selective remote functionalization of internal olefins at room temperature via tandem alkene isomerization-hydrosilylation.

Selective Hydration of Nitriles to Corresponding Amides in Air with Rh(I)-N-Heterocyclic Complex Catalysts

A new synthetic method for obtaining [RhCl(cod)(NHC)] complexes (1–4) (cod = η4-1,5-cyclooctadiene, NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene: IMes, SIMes, IPr, and SIPr, respectively) is reported together with the catalytic properties of 1–4 in nitrile hydration. In addition to the characterization of 1–4 in solution by 13C NMR spectroscopy, the structures of complexes 3, and 4 have been established also in the solid state with single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The Rh(I)-NHC complexes displayed excellent catalytic activity in hydration of aromatic nitriles (up to TOF = 276 h−1) in water/2-propanol (1/1 v/v) mixtures in air.

Comparative DFT study of metal-free Lewis acid-catalyzed C–H and N–H silylation of (hetero)arenes: mechanistic studies and expansion of catalyst and substrate scope

Direct selective dehydrogenative silylation of thiophenes, pyridines, indoles and anilines to synthesize silyl-substituted aromatic compounds catalyzed by metal-free Lewis acids was achieved recently. However, there is still insufficient mechanistic data for these transformations. Using density functional theory calculations, we conducted a detailed investigation of the mechanism of the B(C₆F₅)₃-catalyzed dehydrogenative silylation of N-methylindole, N,N-dimethylaniline and N-methylaniline. We successfully located the most favourable reaction pathways that can explain the experimental observations notably well. The most favourable pathway for B(C₆F₅)₃-catalyzed C–H silylation of N-methylindole includes nucleophilic attack, proton abstraction and hydride migration. The C–H silylation of N,N-dimethylaniline follows a similar pathway to N-methylindole rather than that proposed by Hou's group. Our mechanism successfully explains that the transformations of N-methylindoline to N-methylindole produce different products at different temperatures. For N-methylaniline bearing both N–H and para-phenyl C–H bonds, the N–H silylation reaction is more facile than the C–H silylation reaction. Our proposed mechanism of N–H silylation of N-methylaniline is different from that proposed by the groups of Paradies and Stephan. Lewis acids Al(C₆F₅)₃, Ga(C₆F₅)₃ and B(2,6-Cl₂C₆H₃)(p-HC₆F₄)₂ can also catalyze the C–H silylation of N-methylindole like B(C₆F₅)₃, but the most favourable pathways are those promoted by N-methylindoline. Furthermore, we also found several other types of substrates that would undergo C–H or N–H silylation reactions under moderate conditions. These findings may facilitate the design of new catalysts for the dehydrogenative silylation of inactivated (hetero)arenes.

Platinum Complexes with Chelating Acyclic Aminocarbene Ligands Work as Catalysts for Hydrosilylation of Alkynes

This work describes the preparation of a series of platinum-aminocarbene complexes [PtCl{C(N=C a (C6R2R3R4R5CON b ))=N(H)R1}(CNR1)] a-b (8-19, 65-75% isolated yield) via the reaction of cis-[PtCl2(CNR1)2] (R1 = Cy 1, t-Bu 2, Xyl 3, 2-Cl-6-MeC6H3 4) with 3-iminoisoindolin-1-ones HN=C a (C6R2R3R4R5CON b H) (R2-R5 = H 5; R3 = Me, R2, R4, R5 = H 6; R3, R4 = Cl, R2, R5 = H 7). New complexes 17-19 were characterized by elemental analyses (C, H, N), ESI+-MS, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), one-dimensional (1H, 13C{1H}), and two-dimensional (1H,1H correlation spectroscopy (COSY), 1H,13C heteronuclear multiple quantum correlation (HMQC)/1H,13C heteronuclear single quantum coherence (HSQC), 1H,13C heteronuclear multiple bond correlation (HMBC)) NMR spectroscopy, and authenticity of known species 8-16 was confirmed by FT-IR and 1H and 13C{1H} NMR. Complexes 8-19 were assessed as catalysts for hydrosilylation of terminal alkynes with hydrosilanes to give vinyl silanes, and complex [PtCl{C(N=C a (C6H3(5-Me)CON b ))=N(H)(2-Cl-6-MeC6H3)}{CN(2-Cl-6-MeC6H3)}] a-b (18) showed the highest catalytic activity. The catalytic system proposed operates at 80-100 °C for 4-6 h in toluene and with catalyst loading of 0.1 mol %, enabling the reaction of a number of terminal alkynes (PhC≡CH, t-BuC≡CH, and 4-(t-Bu)C6H4C≡CH) with hydrosilanes (Et3SiH, Pr3SiH, i-Pr3SiH, and PhMe2SiH). Target vinyl silanes were prepared in 48-95% yields (as a mixture of α/β isomers) and with maximum turnover number of 8.4 × 103. Hydrosilylation of internal alkynes (PhC≡CPh, Me(CH2)2C≡C(CH2)2Me, and PhC≡CMe) with hydrosilanes (Et3SiH, PhMe2SiH) led to the corresponding trisubstituted silylated alkenes in 86-94% yields. Initial observations on the mechanism of the catalytic action of platinum-ADC catalysts 8-19 suggested a molecular catalytic cycle.

Formation of Triboelectric Series via Atomic-Level Surface Functionalization for Triboelectric Energy Harvesting

Triboelectric charging involves frictional contact of two different materials, and their contact electrification usually relies on polarity difference in the triboelectric series. This limits the choices of materials for triboelectric contact pairs, hindering research and development of energy harvest devices utilizing triboelectric effect. A progressive approach to resolve this issue involves modification of chemical structures of materials for effectively engineering their triboelectric properties. Here, we describe a facile method to change triboelectric property of a polymeric surface via atomic-level chemical functionalizations using a series of halogens and amines, which allows a wide spectrum of triboelectric series over single material. Using this method, tunable triboelectric output power density is demonstrated in triboelectric generators. Furthermore, molecular-scale calculation using density functional theory unveils that electrons transferred through electrification are occupying the PET group rather than the surface functional group. The work introduced here would open the ability to tune triboelectric property of materials by chemical modification of surface and facilitate the development of energy harvesting devices and sensors exploiting triboelectric effect.

Regio- and Stereoselective Dehydrogenative Silylation and Hydrosilylation of Vinylarenes Catalyzed by Ruthenium Alkylidenes

Development of regio- and stereoselective dehydrogenative silylation and hydrosilylation of vinylarenes with alkoxysilanes, catalyzed by ruthenium alkylidenes, is described. Varying L- and X-type ligands on ruthenium alkylidenes permits selective access to either (E)-vinylsilanes or β-alkylsilanes with high regio- and stereocontrol. cis,cis-1,5-Cyclooctadiene was identified as the most effective sacrificial hydrogen acceptor for the dehydrogenative silylation of vinylarenes, which allows use of a nearly equimolar ratio of alkenes and silanes.

Highly diastereoselective hydrosilylations of allylic alcohols

The highly syn-selective hydrosilylation of allylic alcohols was developed which, following oxidation, provided 1,3 alcohols containing two contiguous stereocentres. Through judicious choice of silane the complementary anti-selective hydrosilylation was also developed. This protocol was applied to the synthesis of an all syn polyketide stereotriad.
