Charge transporting and thermally activated delayed fluorescence materials for OLED applications

The design and synthesis of effective charge transporting (CT) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials are in high demand to obtain high-performing OLED devices. Recently, the significant development in the field of OLEDs has led to the creation of numerous charge transporting and TADF materials with diverse structures. To further improve the device performance, a better understanding of the structural characteristics and structure-property relationships of these materials is essential. Moreover, to enhance the efficiency of OLEDs, all the electrogenerated excitons should be constrained in EMLs. The TADF mechanism can theoretically register 100% IQE through a potent up-conversion method from non-radiative triplet excitons to radiative singlet excitons. In this review, the structural importance, classification, physical properties, and electroluminescence data of some recent charge transporting and TADF materials are summarized and discussed. Moreover, their molecular structural dependence on functional groups and linkers is classified, which can enhance their charge transporting or emitting ability. To offer a potential roadmap for the further development of charge transporting and TADF materials, it is hoped that this study will encourage researchers to acknowledge their important role in OLEDs.

Status and Challenges of Blue OLEDs: A Review

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have outperformed conventional display technologies in smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and televisions while gradually growing to cover a sizable fraction of the solid-state lighting industry. Blue emission is a crucial chromatic component for realizing high-quality red, green, blue, and yellow (RGBY) and RGB white display technologies and solid-state lighting sources. For consumer products with desirable lifetimes and efficiency, deep blue emissions with much higher power efficiency and operation time are necessary prerequisites. This article reviews over 700 papers covering various factors, namely, the crucial role of blue emission for full-color displays and solid-state lighting, the performance status of blue OLEDs, and the systematic development of fluorescent, phosphorescent, and thermally activated delayed fluorescence blue emitters. In addition, various challenges concerning deep blue efficiency, lifetime, and approaches to realizing deeper blue emission and higher efficacy for blue OLED devices are also described.

Effect of substituent structure in fluorene based compounds: Experimental and theoretical study

Fluorene-based low molar weight derivatives were synthesized in Suzuki reactions by using key starting materials 9-benzylidene-2,7-dibromofluorene or 3-(2,7-dibromofluoren-9-ylmethylen)-9-ethylcarbazole and various aryl boronic acids. Photophysical properties of the compounds were investigated in different solutions as well as in solid state. The thermal investigations showed that the obtained compounds are highly thermally stable with temperatures of 5% mass loss (T_5%) in the range of 311-432 °C. Some of the compounds also exhibited very high glass transition temperatures exceeding 125 °C. The presented molecules were electrochemically active and showed the energy band gap below 2.97 eV. The investigations were supported by DFT calculations and the photovoltaic ability of the presented compounds was tested in the organic-inorganic solar cells.

Benzothiadiazole-based fluorophores as efficient non-doped emitters for solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes

New HLCT fluorophores are synthesized and successfully applied as non-doped emissive layers in solution-processed double-layered OLEDs. These devices exhibit intense yellow-green emission colors with superior performance.

Rational Design of Chrysene-Based Hybridized Local and Charge-Transfer Molecules as Efficient Non-Doped Deep-Blue Emitters for Simple-Structured Electroluminescent Devices

Herein, we present a molecular design of chrysene-based deep-blue emissive materials (TC, TpPC, TpXC, and TmPC), in which chrysene as a core is functionalized with different triphenylamine moieties to realize a fine-tuning deep-blue fluorescence with superior electroluminescent (EL) performance. The photophysical analyses and density functional theory (DFT) calculations disclose that TC, TpPC, and TpXC possess HLCT characteristics with intense deep-blue emission in the solid-state, good hole-transporting ability, and high thermal and electrochemical stabilities. They are successfully employed as non-doped emitters in simple structured OLEDs (ITO/PEDOT : PSS : NF/emitter/TPBi/LiF : Al). In particular, TC-based device emits a deep-blue light with an emission peak at 446 nm and CIE color coordinates of (0.148, 0.096), a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE_max ) of 4.31%, and a low turn-on voltage of 2.8 V.

Functional Pyrene-Pyridine-Integrated Hole-Transporting Materials for Solution-Processed OLEDs with Reduced Efficiency Roll-Off

A series of new functional pyridine-appended pyrene derivatives, viz., 2,6-diphenyl-4-(pyren-1-yl)pyridine (Py-03), 2,6-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-4-(pyren-1-yl)pyridine (Py-MeO), 4-(pyren-1-yl)-2,6-di-p-tolylpyridine (Py-Me), and 2,6-bis(4-bromophenyl)-4-(pyren-1-yl)pyridine (Py-Br) were designed, developed, and studied as the hole-transporting materials (HTMs) for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) application. The crystal structures of two molecules revealed to have a large dihedral angle between the pyrene and pyridine units, indicating poor π-electronic communication between them due to ineffective orbital overlap across the pyrene-pyridine systems as the two p-orbitals of pivotal atoms are twisted at 66.80° and 68.75° angles to each other in Py-03 and Py-Me, respectively. The influence of variedly functionalized pyridine units on the electro-optical properties and device performance of the present integrated system for OLED application was investigated. All of the materials have suitable HOMO values (5.6 eV) for hole injection by closely matching the HOMOs of indium tin oxide (ITO) and the light-emitting layer. All of the synthesized molecules have suitable triplet energies, glass transition temperatures, and melting temperatures, which are highly desirable for good HTMs. The pyrene-pyridine-based devices demonstrated stable performance with low-efficiency roll-off. The device with Py-Br as HTM showed a maximum luminance of 17300 cd/m² with a maximum current efficiency of 22.4 cd/A and an EQE of 9% at 3500 cd/m² with 7% roll-off from 1000 to 10 000 cd/m². Also, the devices with Py-Me and Py-03 showed performance roll-up while moving from 1000 to 10 000 cd/m².

Human plasma protein corona decreases the toxicity of pillar-layer metal organic framework

This scenario was designed to investigate the protein corona pattern on the pillar-layer surface of a Cu-based metal–organic framework (MOF) in human plasma. The [Cu(L)(L^/)].1.3DMA (MOF-1) {L = 4, 4^/-bipyridine and L^/ = 5-aminoisophthalic acid}, was synthesized through the sonochemical irradiation approach as well as characterized by various techniques like scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The space group was determined to be an orthorhombic space group (Pbam) by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Single-crystal X-ray analyses on MOF-1 showed that Cu⁺² ion was 6-coordinated. Besides, to study and clarify interactions between MOFs and biological milieu, human whole blood plasma was selected as a model. Fluorescence spectroscopy and SDS-PAGE techniques were employed to explore quantitative and qualitative in situ characterization of protein corona as well. Furthermore, cell viability in a cancerous cell lines was evaluated by MTT assay in the presence and absence of the corona. The results from SDS-PAGE illustrated that the most adsorbed quantity among plasma proteins belongs to fibrinogen (α, β and γ chains), and this protein showed the maximum frequency on the MOF-1s surface, so the possible interactions of MOF-1s with fibrinogen also studied using fluorescence spectroscopy and corresponding data were plotted. According to the obtained data from MTT assay, these structures have concentration-dependent toxicity. In brief, based on the obtained data in the current study, the designed MOF can be introduced as a new desirable carrier for drug/gen delivery after further prerequisite assessments.

A Simple and Strong Electron-Deficient 5,6-Dicyano[2,1,3]benzothiadiazole-Cored Donor-Acceptor-Donor Compound for Efficient Near Infrared Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence

Despite the success of thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) materials in steering the next generation of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), effective near infrared (NIR) TADF emitters are still very rare. Here, we present a simple and extremely high electron-deficient compound, 5,6-dicyano[2,1,3]benzothiadiazole (CNBz), as a strong electron-accepting unit to develop a sufficiently strong donor-acceptor (D-A) interaction for NIR emission. End-capping with the electron-donating triphenylamine (TPA) unit created an effective D-A-D type system, giving rise to an efficient NIR TADF emissive molecule (λ_em =750 nm) with a very small ΔE_ST of 0.06 eV. The electroluminescent device using this NIR TADF emitter exhibited an excellent performance with a high maximum radiance of 10020 mW Sr^-1  m^-2 , a maximum EQE of 6.57% and a peak wavelength of 712 nm.

Derivatives of Cyanonaphthyl-Substituted Phenanthroimidazole as Blue Emitters for Nondoped Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

New multifunctional blue-emissive materials with superior thermal properties, viz., 4,4'-bis(1-(4-naphthyl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazol-2-yl)binaphthyl (NPIBN), 4,4'-bis(1-(4-cyanonaphthyl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazol-2-yl)biphenyl (CNPIBP), and 4,4'-bis(1-(4-cyanonaphthyl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazol-2-yl)binaphthyl (CNPIBN) have been synthesized. The said molecules show high photoluminescence quantum yield (Φs/f: NPIBN-0.75/0.68, CNPIBP-0.85/0.76, and CNPIBN-0.90/0.88). The fabricated nondoped/doped device with CNPIBN/4,4'-bis(carbazol-9-yl)biphenyl: CNPIBN display maximum efficiencies (ηex 4.96/5.4%; ηc 7.46/7.56 cd A-1; ηp 6.85/6.91 lm W-1) at low turn-on voltage (3.5/3.8 V). Nondoped devices based on D-π-A architecture, 4-(2-(5-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)thiophen-2-yl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazol-1-yl)naphthalene-1-carbonitrile exhibit maximum efficiencies (ηex 2.32%; ηc 4.00 cd A-1; ηp 3.42 lm W-1) compared to 4-(2-(5-(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)thiophen-2-yl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazol-1-yl)naphthalene-1-carbonitrile (ηex 2.01%; ηc 3.89 cd A-1; ηp 3.15 lm W-1).

Nitrogen-Free Bifunctional Bianthryl Leads to Stable White-Light Emission in Bilayer and Multilayer OLED Devices

White organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) are at the center stage of OLED research today because of their advantages in replacing the high energy-consuming lighting technologies in vogue for a long time. New materials that emit white light in simple devices are much sought after. We have developed two novel electroluminescent materials, referred to as BABZF and BATOMe, based on a twisted bianthryl core, which are brilliantly fluorescent, thermally highly stable with high T _d and T _g, and exhibit reversible redox property. Although inherently blue emissive, BABZF leads to white-light emission (CIE ≈ 0.28, 0.33) with a moderate power efficiency of 2.24 lm/W and a very high luminance of 15 600 cd/m² in the fabricated multilayer nondoped OLED device. This device exhibited excellent color stability over a range of applied potential. Remarkably, similar white-light emission was captured even from a double-layer device, attesting to the innate hole-transporting ability of BABZF despite it being non-nitrogenous, that is, lacking any traditional hole-transporting di-/triarylamino group(s). Similar studies with BATOMe led to inferior device performance results, thereby underscoring the importance of dibenzofuryl groups in BABZF. Experimental as well as theoretical studies suggest the possibility of emission from multiple species involving BABZF and its exciplex and electroplex in the devices. The serendipitously observed white-light emission from a double-layer device fabricated with an unconventional hole-transporting material (HTM) opens up new avenues to create new non-nitrogenous HTMs that may lead to more efficient white-light emission in simple double-layer devices.

Tailoring the molecular design of twisted dihydrobenzodioxin phenanthroimidazole derivatives for non-doped blue organic light-emitting devices

Three fused polycyclic aryl fragments, namely, naphthyl, methoxynaphthyl, and pyrenyl have been used to construct blue-emissive phenanthroimidazole-functionalized target molecules, i.e., 1-(2,3-dihydrobenzo[b][1,4]dioxin-6-yl)-2-(naphthalen-1-yl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole (1), 1-(2,3-dihydrobenzo[b][1,4]dioxin-6-yl)-2-(1-methoxynaphthalen-4-yl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole (2), and 1-(2,3-dihydrobenzo[b][1,4]dioxin-6-yl)-2-(pyren-10-yl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole (3). The up-conversion of triplets to singlets via a triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA) process is dominant in these compounds due to 2E_T1 > E_S1. The pyrenyl dihydrobenzodioxin phenanthroimidazole (3)-based nondoped OLED exhibits blue emission (450 nm) with CIE (0.15, 0.14), a luminance of 53 890 cd m⁻², power efficiency of 5.86 lm W⁻¹, external quantum efficiency of 5.30%, and current efficiency of 6.90 cd A⁻¹. The efficient device performance of pyrenyl dihydrobenzodioxin phenanthroimidazole is due to the TTA contribution to the electroluminescent process.

Efficient blue emitters, 1-(2,3-dihydrobenzodioxinyl)-2-naphthylphenanthroimidazole, 1-(2,3-dihydrobenzodioxinyl)-2-methoxynaphthylphenanthroimidazole and 1-(2,3-dihydrobenzodioxinyl)-2-pyrenylphenanthroimidazole have been reported.

Emission-Tunable Multicolor Graphene Molecules with Controllable Synthesis, Excellent Optical Properties, and Specific Applications

Series of graphene molecules with varied emission colors have been prepared by oxidative cyclodehydrogenation using anhydrous ferric chloride (FeCl3) as the catalyst under mild conditions. By controlling the oxidation time in the initial step only, molecules with different fluorescence colors are conveniently obtained. New colors can be recorded evidently because of the stepwise and controllable process, which highly related to the conjugation length. Blue emissive starting compounds in the solid state can be transformed into orange upon brief oxidation, whereas green emissive oligomers are varied to red with an emission wavelength redshift about 123 nm. Cyclic voltammetry measurements performed can give the corresponding data, which verify the results drawn from the UV and PL spectroscope. The gradual change of conjugation length with tunable emission is confirmed in the MALDI-TOF study as well. Further characterizations indicate that the graphene molecules possess satisfactory optical properties, which are highly emissive both in solution and in the solid state because of the alkyl group. In addition, the good thermal stability and the self-assembly of graphene molecules suggest that they are promising candidates for high-tech applications. Furthermore, the fabricated field-effect transistors possess the nice performance, whose mobilities are about 0.57 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) with an on-off ratio of 1 × 10(4) and 0.81 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) with an on-off ratio of 1 × 10(3), respectively.

A new series of pyrenyl-based triarylamines: syntheses, structures, optical properties, electrochemistry and electroluminescence

A new series of pyrenyl-based triarylamines (2a–2e and 3py) were designed and synthesized. These pyrene-based triarylamines exhibit excellent photoelectric properties and are potentially functional materials for devices.

Efficient bifunctional materials based on pyrene- and triphenylamine-functionalized dendrimers for electroluminescent devices

These materials show a promising bifunctional property as blue emissive layer and hole-transporting layer for high efficiency solution processed blue and Alq3-based green OLEDs with much simpler device architecture.
