Abstract
Over the past two decades, organic optoelectronic materials have been considered very promising. The attractiveness of this group of compounds, regardless of their undisputable application potential, lies in the possibility of their use in the construction of organic–inorganic hybrid materials. This class of frameworks also considers nanostructural polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSSs) with “organic coronae” and precisely defined organic architectures between dispersed rigid silica cores. A significant number of papers on the design and development of POSS-based organic optoelectronic as well as photoluminescent (PL) materials have been published recently. In view of the scientific literature abounding with numerous examples of their application (i.e., as OLEDs), the aim of this review is to present efficient synthetic pathways leading to the formation of nanocomposite materials based on silsesquioxane systems that contain organic chromophores of complex nature. A summary of stoichiometric and predominantly catalytic methods for these silsesquioxane-based systems to be applied in the construction of photoactive materials or their precursors is given.

Abstract
A new platinum complex bearing bulky N-heterocyclic carbene ligand of the general formula [Pt(IPr*Ph)(dvtms)] (where IPr*Ph = 1,3-bis{2,4,6-tris(diphenylmethyl)phenyl}imidazol-2-ylidene, dvtms = divinyltetramethyldisiloxane) exhibits a high catalytic activity towards E-selective dimerization of ethynyl substituted siloxysilsesquioxanes. This process leads to a novel class of functionalized silsesquioxane derivatives, resembling their dumbbell-shaped silsesquioxane analogues.

Abstract
Anthracene-conjugated octameric silsesquioxane cages thermodynamically display intramolecular excimer formation, which can be used to identify anions through the change of fluorescence.
Anthracene-conjugated octameric silsesquioxane (AnSQ) cages, prepared via Heck coupling between octavinylsilsesquioxane (OVS) and 9-bromoanthracene, thermodynamically display intramolecular excimer emissions. More importantly, these hosts are sensitive to each anionic guest, thereby resulting in change of anthracene excimer formation, displaying the solvent-dependent fluorescence and allowing us to distinguish up to four ions such as F–, OH–, CN– and PO43– by fluorescence spectroscopy. Depending on the solvent polarity, for example, both F– and CN– quenched the fluorescence emission intensity in THF, but only F– could enhance the fluorescence in all other solvents. The presence of PO43– results in fluorescence enhancements in high polarity solvents such as DMSO, DMF, and acetone, while OH– induces enhancements only in low polarity solvents (e.g. DCM and toluene). A picture of the anion recognizing ability of AnSQ was obtained through principal component analysis (PCA) with NMR and FTIR confirming the presence of host–guest interactions. Computational modeling studies demonstrate the conformation of host–guest complexation and also the change of excimer formation. Detection of F–, CN– and OH– by AnSQ hosts in THF is noticeable with the naked eye, as indicated by strong color changes arising from charge transfer complex formation upon anion addition.

Abstract
Pyrene functionalized silsesquioxane cages (PySQ) not only provide significant fluorescence from pyrene-pyrene excimers with a very large Stokes shift (Δλ = 143 nm, 69 930 cm-1) in DMSO but also exhibit fluoride capture results coincidentally with a π-π* fluorescence enhancement. On the other hand, PySQ-F- in THF significantly exhibits π-π* fluorescence quenching and a color change can be observed with the naked eye from light yellow to deep orange by forming a charge-transfer (CT) complex among the pyrenyl rings. Moreover, PySQ selectively captures F- with a response time of <2 min and with a very low detection limit (1.61 ppb), while 19F NMR is used to confirm encapsulation of F- with Δδ = 19 ppm.

Abstract
In this paper we report the synthesis of a new polyacrylate named poly(1,1ʹ-BP4MA) which is a derivate from 4-biphenylmethanol monomer. Poly(1,1ʹ-BP4MA) was obtained by solution and bulk polymerization techniques to yield polymers with high molecular weight and high solubility. The study of the optical properties showed that poly(1,1ʹ-BP4MA) is a fluorescent material with emission in the UV-green region and it has similar quantum yield to tryptophan.

Abstract
Copolymers of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and polyimide (PI) have shown remarkable resistance to atomic oxygen (AO) attack and have been proposed as replacements for Kapton on the external surfaces of spacecraft in the harsh oxidizing environment of low Earth orbit (LEO). POSS PI blends would be an economical alternative to the copolymers if they also resisted AO attack. Thus, blends of trisilanolphenyl (TSP) POSS and PI with different weight percentages of the Si7O9 POSS cage were cast into films and exposed to a hyperthermal AO beam, and they were characterized in terms of their recession, mass loss, surface morphology, and surface chemistry. In order to compare the AO resistance of the blends with POSS PI copolymers, samples of previously studied copolymers were also investigated in parallel with the blends. For all POSS PI materials, the AO resistance increased with increasing AO fluence and with increasing POSS cage loading. At similar POSS cage loadings and exposure conditions, the TSP POSS PI blends showed comparable erosion yields to the POSS PI copolymers, with specific samples of blends and copolymers achieving erosion yields as low as 0.066 × 10-24 cm3 atom-1 with an AO fluence of 5.93 × 1020 O atoms cm-2. SEM and XPS analyses indicated that passivating SiOx layers were formed on the surfaces of all POSS-containing polymers during AO exposure. Thus, a TSP POSS PI blend is proposed as a low-cost variant of a POSS polyimide for use in extreme oxidizing environments, such as LEO.

Abstract
The synthesis of π-extended 10-aryl-pyrenoimidazoles having different substituents was realised via Ru(ii)-catalyzed oxidative annulation of 10-aryl-pyrenoimidazole with diphenylacetylene. The single crystal X-ray structure of trifluoromethyl and carboxylate substituted annulated-10-aryl-pyrenoimidazoles confirms the near coplanarity of the pyrene and imidazole moieties and the presence of twisted conformation resulting in intermolecular C-Hπ interactions. The lowest energy absorption maximum becomes red-shifted characteristic to the nature of the substituent owing to the extended π-conjugation, and specifically the nitro substituent shows intense absorption in the visible region with the maximum at 440 nm. All the molecules were found to show intense fluorescence both in solution and solid states. Strikingly, 170 nm red-shifted fluorescence with a large Stokes shift ca. 7000 cm-1 for the nitro derivative, a value nearly two-fold higher than the parent compound despite its rigid polyaromatic skeleton was observed. The combination of electron rich π-conjugated aromatic systems with electron deficient substituents induces the intramolecular charge transfer interactions, which has been corroborated with the theoretical calculations.

Abstract
As a route to the production of organic-inorganic hybrid multilayers, the growth behavior of molecular layer deposited (MLD) alucone and atomic layer deposited (ALD) Al2O3 films on top of each other was examined. MLD alucone films were prepared using trimethyl aluminum and diethylene glycol precursors, the latter resulting in faster growth rates than ethylene glycol precursors. The sensitivity of individual alucone films with respect to ambient exposure was found to be related to moisture permeation and hydration reactions, of which the mechanism is studied by density functional theory calculations. Deleterious effects such as thickness reduction over time could be suppressed by applying a protective Al2O3 layer on top of alucone. A preliminary nucleation period was required in the ALD process of Al2O3 films on alucone surfaces, prior to reaching a linear regime where the thickness increases linearly with respect to the number of ALD cycles. The same behavior was observed for alucone growing on Al2O3. The protective Al2O3 films were found to effectively suppress moisture permeation, thus isolating the underlying alucone from the surrounding environment. The water vapor transmission rate was greatly reduced when an Al2O3/alucone/Al2O3 multilayer stack was formed, which suggests that proper combinations of organic/inorganic hybrid structures may provide chemically stable platforms, especially for mechanically flexible applications.

Abstract
The systematic synthesis of five 1-, 3-, 6-, and 8-tetrasubstituted asymmetric pyrenes with electron donor and acceptor moieties is presented, together with an examination of their photophysical properties. Pyrene derivative PA1, containing one formyl and three piperidyl groups, showed bright solvatochromic fluorescence from green (λem = 557 nm, ΦFL = 0.94 in hexane) to red (λem = 648 nm, ΦFL = 0.50 in methanol), suggesting potential applications for PA1 as an environmentally responsive probe. Although the synthesis of simple 1- and 3-disubstituted pyrene derivatives is considered difficult, PA13, with two formyl groups at the 1- and 3-positions and two piperidyl groups at the 6- and 8-positions, could be synthesized successfully. PA13 exhibited less pronounced solvatochromism, but displayed a narrow fluorescent band with high ΦFL in all solvents (ΦFL > 0.75). Moreover, its absorption band displayed an exceptional bathochromic shift compared to the other derivatives (e.g., λabs = 480 and 522 nm in ethanol for PA1 and PA13, respectively), suggesting that such modifications of pyrene may be quite important for the modulation of its energy gap. Additionally, all compounds exhibited exceptionally high photostability, which highlights the advantage of these new dyes and provides new insights on the design of photostable fluorophores.

Abstract
An aerobic dehydrogenative Heck reaction of pyrene (1a) and 2,7-di-tert-butylpyrene (1b) with ethyl acrylate is reported. The reaction is catalyzed by a Pd(OAc)2/4,5-diazafluoren-9-one (DAF) system and takes place in acetic or pivalic acid as solvents at 110-130 °C. The reaction of 1a afforded a 6:1 mixture of C-1- and C-4-alkenylated pyrenes (2a and 3a, respectively) in 71% yield. In the case of 1b, only a C-4-substituted product (3b) was formed in 46% yield. Compounds 2a and 3a,b exhibited fluorescence in solution and in the solid state. In chloroform and THF solution the fluorescence maxima were in the range of 440-465 nm, and quantum yields decreased in the order 2a > 3a> 3b. In the solid state, 3a,b showed blue-green fluorescence (ΦF = 0.26 and 0.14, respectively), whereas 2a emitted yellow-green fluorescence) (ΦF = 0.35). Besides blue-emitting monomers, the presence of green-emitting aggregated species (preformed dimers) in the crystals of 3a,b and red-emitting dynamic excimers in the crystals of 2a has been demonstrated. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses of 2a and 3b confirmed π-stacking of pyrenyl moieties in the crystals of the former and the absence of stacking in the crystals of the latter compound.

Abstract
We have systematically synthesized 1-, 3-, 6-, and 8-alkyl-substituted pyrene derivatives using the latest synthesis methods and investigated the effects of alkyl substitution on the photophysical properties of the pyrene chromophore. Like the trimethylsilyl group, which is known to enhance the fluorescence properties of some chromophores through σ*-π* conjugation, alkyl groups (primary, secondary, and tertiary) enhanced the fluorescence quantum yield of the pyrene chromophore through σ-π conjugation in most cases. While these enhancements in the fluorescence quantum yield were beyond expectations, the results were supported by absolute measurements. These results also indicate that ubiquitous alkyl groups can be used to tune the photophysical properties of the pyrene chromophore, as well as to improve the solubility or prevent aggregation. In other words, they can be used to develop new photofunctional materials.
