Effective Blue Light-Absorbing AuAg Nanoparticles in InP Quantum Dots-Based Color Conversion

In typical color-by-blue mode-based quantum dot (QD) display devices, only part of the blue excitation light is absorbed by QD emitters, thus it is accompanied by the leakage of blue light through the devices. To address this issue, we offer, for the first time, the applicability of AuAg alloy nanoparticles (NPs) as effective blue light absorbers in InP QD-based color-by-blue platforms. For this, high-quality fluorescent green and red InP QDs with a double shell scheme of ZnSe/ZnS were synthesized and embedded in a transparent polymer film. Separately, a series of Au/Ag ratio-varied AuAg NPs with tunable plasmonic absorption peaks were synthesized. Among them, AuAg NPs possessing the most appropriate absorption peak with respect to spectral overlap with blue emission are chosen for the subsequent preparation of AuAg NP polymeric films with varied NP concentrations. A stack of AuAg NP polymeric film on top of InP QD film is then placed remotely on a blue light-emitting diode, successfully resulting in systematically progressive suppression of blue light leakage with increasing AuAg NP concentration. Furthermore, the beneficial function of the AuAg NP polymeric overlayer in mitigating undesirable QD excitation upon exposure to ambient lights was further examined.

Development of Piezoresistive Sensors Based on Graphene Nanoplatelets Screen-Printed on Woven and Knitted Fabrics: Optimisation of Active Layer Formulation and Transversal/Longitudinal Textile Direction

Although the force/pressure applied onto a textile substrate through a uniaxial compression is constant and independent of the yarn direction, it should be noted that such mechanical action causes a geometric change in the substrate, which can be identified by the reduction in its lateral thickness. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the influence of the fabric orientation on both knitted and woven pressure sensors, in order to generate knowledge for a better design process during textile piezoresistive sensor development. For this purpose, these distinct textile structures were doped with different concentrations of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), using the screen-printing technique. The chemical and physical properties of these screen-printed fabrics were analysed using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, Ground State Diffuse Reflectance and Raman Spectroscopy. Samples were subjected to tests determining linear electrical surface resistance and piezoresistive behaviour. In the results, a higher presence of conductive material was found in woven structures. For the doped samples, the electrical resistance varied between 10⁵ Ω and 10¹ Ω, for the GNPs’ percentage increase. The lowest resistance value was observed for the woven fabric with 15% GNPs (3.67 ± 8.17 × 10¹ Ω). The samples showed different electrical behaviour according to the fabric orientation. Overall, greater sensitivity in the longitudinal direction and a lower coefficient of variation CV% of the measurement was identified in the transversal direction, coursewise for knitted and weftwise for woven fabrics. The woven fabric doped with 5% GNPs assembled in the weftwise direction was shown to be the most indicated for a piezoresistive sensor, due to its most uniform response and most accurate measure of mechanical stress.

Tunable High Refractive Index Polymer Hybrid and Polymer-Inorganic Nanocomposite Coatings

Atomized spray plasma deposition (ASPD) provides a single-step, low-temperature, and dry approach for the preparation of high refractive index hybrid polymer or polymer-inorganic nanocomposite coatings. Refractive indices as high as 1.936 at 635 nm wavelength have been obtained for ASPD 4-bromostyrene/toluene-TiO₂ nanocomposite layers containing low titania loadings. Thin films with any desired refractive index up to 1.936 can be easily deposited onto a variety of substrates by varying the precursor mixture composition. ASPD overcomes disadvantages commonly associated with alternative fabrication methods for depositing high refractive index coatings (elevated temperatures, wet processes, UV curing steps, and much greater inorganic loadings).

Diazo-Based Copolymers for the Wet Strength Improvement of Paper Based on Thermally Induced CH-Insertion Cross-Linking

We present an alternative to commonly used, but from an environmental point of view, problematic wet strength agents, which are usually added to paper to prevent a loss of mechanical stability and finally disintegrate when they get into contact with water. To this end, diazoester-containing copolymers are generated, which are coated onto paper and by heating to 110-160 °C for short periods of time become activated and form carbene intermediates, which undergo a CH-insertion cross-linking reaction. The process leads to a simultaneous cross-linking of the polymer and its attachment to the cellulose substrate. The immobilization process of copolymers consisting of a hydrophilic matrix based on N,N-dimethylacrylamide and a diazoester-based comonomer to a cellulose model surface and to laboratory-engineered, fibrous paper substrates is investigated as a function of time, temperature, and cross-linker composition. The distribution of the polymer in the fiber network is studied using confocal fluorescence microscopy. Finally, the tensile properties of modified wet and dry eucalyptus sulfate papers are measured to demonstrate the strong effect of the thermally cross-linked copolymers on the wet strength of paper substrates. Initial experiments show that the tensile indices of the modified and wetted paper samples are up to 50 times higher compared to the values measured for unmodified samples. When dry and wet papers coated with the above-described wetting agents are compared, relative wet strengths of over 30% are observed.

PDMAA Hydrogel Coated U-Bend Humidity Sensor Suited for Mass-Production

We present a full-polymer respiratory monitoring device suited for application in environments with strong magnetic fields (e.g., during an MRI measurement). The sensor is based on the well-known evanescent field method and consists of a 1 mm plastic optical fiber with a bent region where the cladding is removed and the fiber is coated with poly-dimethylacrylamide (PDMAA). The combination of materials allows for a mass-production of the device by spray-coating and enables integration in disposable medical devices like oxygen masks, which we demonstrate here. We also present results of the application of an autocorrelation-based algorithm for respiratory frequency determination that is relevant for real applications of the device.

Hollow Casein-Based Polymeric Nanospheres for Opaque Coatings

Casein-based hollow polymeric sphere were fabricated through emulsifier-free polymerization coupled with alkali swelling approach. Hollow structure and nanoscale size of casein-based polymeric spheres were verified by TEM, AFM, SEM, and UV-vis spectra. The as-obtained hollow spheres were proved exhibiting superior opaque characteristic. Through adjusting the structural parameters, for example, MAA usages and MAA content in seed to core, sphere film showed tunable visible-light transmittance and antiultraviolet property. The formation mechanism of casein-based hollow sphere has been discussed in depth. Worth mentioning, the resultant hollow polymeric sphere can easily form films itself at room temperature, which would open a new possibility of designing opaque coatings in several fields, such as leather, packaging, paper making, biomedical, and special indoor coating applications.

Centrifugation-induced water-tunable photonic colloidal crystals with narrow diffraction bandwidth and highly sensitive detection of SCN-

Novel opal hydrogels with water-tunable photonic bandgap (PBG) exhibiting responses to external stimuli were self-assembled from polystyrene-co-poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PS-co-PDMAA) microspheres. The polymeric microspheres with narrow size distribution were successfully prepared in water, consisting of two regions. The inner region is rich in PS which is hard and hydrophobic; the outer region is rich in PDMAA which is soft and hydrophilic. The self-assembly of the PS-co-PDMAA hydrogel microspheres is ready induced by centrifugation and resulted in highly ordered three-dimensional (3D) photonic colloidal crystals (PCCs). With an increase of the amount of water, the PBG of the opal hydrogels shifted from the visible to near-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The maximum shift of diffraction peak positions could be larger than 500 nm with narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM) in the range of 20 to 40 nm only. The change in color was visible to the naked eye. The remarkable sensitivity to water of the lattice spacing of the opal hydrogels was repeatable after centrifugation. These observations are attributed to a reproducible degree of hydration of the hydrophilic outer region of the polymeric microspheres. Furthermore, the diffraction of the opal hydrogels was particularly sensitive to the presence of thiocyanate (SCN(-)) ions. The interaction between SCN(-) ions and DMAA repeat units is argued to block hydrogen bonds between DMAA and water molecules. Our PS-co-PDMAA opal hydrogels could be a practical system for diffraction-based detections.
