Combination of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and polyoxometalates (POMs): the preparation strategy and potential application of COF-POM hybrids

Both covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and polyoxometalates (POMs) show excellent properties and application potential in many fields, thus receiving widespread attention. In recent years, COF-POM hybrid materials were prepared by combining COFs and POMs through physical or chemical methods. COF-POM hybrids have shown high performance in many fields, such as catalysis, sensing, energy storage, and biomedicine. In this review, we introduced the preparation strategy and application of COF-POM hybrids in detail. We believe that the combination of COFs and POMs will provide more abundant functions and broad application prospects.

Recent Advances in Hybrid Materials of Metal Nanoparticles and Polyoxometalates

Polyoxometalates (POMs), anionic metal-oxygen nanoclusters that possess various composition-dependent properties, are widely used to modify the existing properties of metal nanoparticles and to endow them with new ones. Herein, we present an overview of recent advances in hybrid materials that consist of metal nanoparticles and POMs. Following a brief introduction on the inception of this area and its development, representative properties and applications of these materials in various fields such as electrochemistry, photochemistry, and catalysis are introduced. We discuss how the combination of two classic inorganic materials facilitates cooperative and synergistic behavior, and we also give personal perspectives on the future development of this field.

Three-Dimensional Interpenetrating Frameworks Based on {P4Mo6} Tetrameric Clusters and Filled with In Situ Generated Alkyl Viologens

Four novel three-dimensional interpenetrating frameworks based on {P₄Mo₆} units, H[C₁₂H₁₄N₂]₄[TM₄(PO₄)(H₂O)₄Na₆][TM₂(Mo₆O₁₂(HPO₄)₃(PO₄)(OH)₃)₄]·8H₂O (1, 2) and H[C₁₄H₁₈N₂]₄[TM₄(PO₄)(H₂O)₄Na₆][TM₂(Mo₆O₁₂(HPO₄)₃(PO₄)(OH)₃)₄]·8H₂O (3, 4) (TM = Co²⁺ (1, 3), Mn²⁺ (2, 4)) were synthesized and characterized using infrared spectroscopy, elemental analyses, thermogravimetric analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In situ generated methyl viologen (compounds 1 and 2) or ethyl viologen (compounds 3 and 4) cations function as templates to induce the generation of 2-fold interpenetrating structures in which the {P₄Mo₆} tetrameric clusters with [TM₄(PO₄)Na₆] (TM = Co²⁺ (1, 3) and Mn²⁺ (2, 4)) as the core were bridged by transition metal ions. Compounds 1-4 possess high thermal stabilities and the decomposition temperature of the inorganic frameworks were all >500 °C. It is worth noting that the four compounds all exhibited the bifunctional catalytic performance that they not only had an excellent photocatalytic activity for the reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) under visible light irradiation but also showed a good electrocatalytic activity for the reduction reaction of hydrogen peroxide.

Discovery of a New Family of Polyoxometalate-Based Hybrids with Improved Catalytic Performances for Selective Sulfoxidation: The Synergy between Classic Heptamolybdate Anions and Complex Cations

A series of functional cation-regulated isopolymolybdate-based organic-inorganic hybrid compounds, Na₂H₂[Mo₄O₁₂(C₈H₁₇O₅N)₂]·10H₂O (1), Na₂[M(Bis-tris)(H₂O)]₂[Mo₇O₂₄]·10H₂O [M = Cu, 2; Ni, 3; Co, 4; Zn, 5; Bis-tris = 2,2-Bis(hydroxymethyl)-2,2',2″-nitrilotriethanol], and (NH₄)₂[M(Bis-tris)(H₂O)]₂[Mo₇O₂₄]·6H₂O (M = Zn, 6; Cu, 7), were synthesized and characterized toward advanced molecular catalyst design. Compound 1 is a covalently bonded adduct, and its self-assembly process can be probed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Compounds 2-7 are polyoxometalate (POM)-based hybrids containing classic heptamolybdate anions and complex cations with Bis-tris ligands. All of these compounds showed remarkable catalytic effects for selective sulfide oxidation. To the best of our knowledge, compound 5 presents the best catalytic activity so far among the reported hybrid materials with common easily synthesized small-molecule POM clusters and also exhibits outstanding reliability. The conclusion of the catalytic effect is drawn from the results that Zn-based compounds have better catalytic effects than other transition-metal-containing compounds and the compound constructed by Na⁺ has higher catalytic activity than that constructed by NH₄⁺. The mechanism studies show that the improvements of the catalytic performance are caused by the synergy between classic heptamolybdate anions and complex cations. ESI-MS data and UV-vis spectra revealed that the POM anions can form intermediate peroxomolybdenum units during catalytic reaction. Further, the combination of the substrate thioanisole with complex cations was characterized by NMR experiments and UV-vis spectra. Thus, a new synergistic mechanism of anions and cations is proposed in which the activated thioanisole is used as a nucleophile to attack the peroxomolybdenum bonds, and this provides a new strategy in the design of reliable POM-based catalysts.

Honeycomb-patterned hybrid films of surfactant-encapsulated polyoxometalates by a breath figure method and its electrocatalysis for BrO3−

Surfactant-encapsulated POMs can self-assemble into ordered porous honeycomb films under a moist atmosphere. We successfully fabricated (DODA)₁₀{Cu₄(PW₉)₂} honeycomb films by using a one-step method.

Diamondoid-structured polymolybdate-based metal–organic frameworks as high-capacity anodes for lithium-ion batteries

Two novel isostructural polyoxometalate (POM)-based coordination polymers were obtained. The results reveal that NENU-507 could be directly utilized as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries with outstanding performance.

Ultrastable Polymolybdate-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks as Highly Active Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Generation from Water

Two novel polyoxometalate (POM)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), [TBA]3[ε-PMo(V)8Mo(VI)4O36(OH)4Zn4][BTB]4/3·xGuest (NENU-500, BTB = benzene tribenzoate, TBA(+) = tetrabutylammonium ion) and [TBA]3[ε-PMo(V)8Mo(VI)4O37(OH)3Zn4][BPT] (NENU-501, BPT = [1,1'-biphenyl]-3,4',5-tricarboxylate), were isolated. In these compounds, the POM fragments serving as nodes were directly connected with organic ligands giving rise to three-dimensional (3D) open frameworks. The two anionic frameworks were balanced by TBA(+) ions residing inside the open channels. They exhibit not only good stability in air but also tolerance to acidic and basic media. Furthermore, they were employed as electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) owing to the combination of the redox activity of a POM unit and the porosity of a MOF. Meanwhile, the HER activities of ε(trim)(4/3), NENU-5, and HKUST-1 were also studied for comparison. Remarkably, as a 3D hydrogen-evolving cathode operating in acidic electrolytes, NENU-500 exhibits the highest activity among all MOF materials. It shows an onset overpotential of 180 mV and a Tafel slope of 96 mV·dec(-1), and the catalytic current density can approach 10 mA·cm(-2) at an overpotential of 237 mV. Moreover, NENU-500 and NENU-501 maintain their electrocatalytic activities after 2000 cycles.

An unprecedented (3,4,24)-connected heteropolyoxozincate organic framework as heterogeneous crystalline Lewis acid catalyst for biodiesel production

A novel 3D hexadecanuclear heteropolyoxozincate organic framework, IFMC-200, has been successfully synthesized based on a late transition metal-oxygen cluster. IFMC-200 not only represents the first example of (3,4,24)-connected framework but also contains the first 24-connected single metal cluster in a crystal structure. It exhibits superior thermal stability, good water-stability, and even insensitivity to the existence of acid and base within a certain range of pH values. Furthermore, it performs as a heterogeneous crystalline Lewis acid catalyst with good activity for the conversion of long-chain fatty acids rather than short-chain ones, and high recycling efficiency for esterification reaction of fatty acids with alcohols to produce biodiesel.

Recent advances in porous polyoxometalate-based metal–organic framework materials

POM-based MOF materials, which combine the advantages of both POMs and MOFs, have received increasing attention. In this review, we present the recent developments in porous POM-based MOF materials for the first time, including their classification, synthesis strategies and applications, especially in the field of catalysis.
