Size-dependent As(V) adsorption of reduced graphene oxide/magnetite nanocomposites

Arsenic (As(V)) contamination in aqueous resources poses a significant environmental, and public health risk due to its high toxicity. To address this challenge, we synthesized and characterized novel reduced graphene oxide/magnetite (rGO/Fe3O4) nanocomposites, which are efficient adsorbents for removing As(V). Using a co-precipitation method, we obtained three distinct sizes of rGO/Fe3O4 nanocomposites by controlling the salt concentration (Fe2+: Fe3+) ratios. Analysis of the adsorption ability of the samples shows that the adsorption efficiency can reach up to 98.10% within 90 min, and the adsorption capacity value reaches 20.55 mg/g. Furthermore, these test data are ably consistent with both the pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model, based on which the adsorption mechanism has been proposed. These results show that the rGO/Fe3O4 nanocomposites that we synthesized are a potential adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals from water.

Hydrophilic magnetic Ti3C2Tx-based nanocomposite as an efficient boron adsorbent: Synthesis, characterization, and application

It is widely recognized that wastewater containing boron is an environmental issue. Therefore, the development of adsorbents with excellent adsorption capacity, stability, and recyclability is essential in water treatment applications. A Fe3O4/PDA/Ti3C2Tx/PEI/DHHA nanocomposite has been prepared that can be used to separate and recover boric acid by adjusting the pH of the solution, based on the affinity theory of boric acid and cis-diol. Through series characterization, it was determined that the adsorbent possessed good magnetic properties, high hydrophilicity and high loading capacities. In this study, 4-formylphenylboronic acid (FPBA) was selected as the model compound. The nanocomposite exhibited an adsorption equilibrium time of 10 h and an adsorption capacity of 98.99 mg/g at pH = 8.5 and 25 °C. The Langmuir isothermal model and the quasi-secondary kinetic model are both appropriate for describing the adsorption process. Thermodynamic results suggest that adsorption is a spontaneous chemisorption process. Furthermore, the nanocomposite retains good regeneration performance after five adsorption-desorption cycles.

Controllable assembly of three-dimensional porous graphene-Au dual aerogels and its application for high-efficient bioelectrocatalytic O2 reduction

Aerogels derived from the colloidal nanoparticles featured with hierarchical interconnected pore-rich networks guarantee their great potentials in various applications. Herein, the controllable assembly of three-dimensional aerogels based on Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheets as building blocks via a bottom-up approach have been systematically clarified. The difference of building blocks and their assembly sequence were crucially to the final aerogel morphologies and electrochemical properties. Specifically, the highly porous graphene-gold dual aerogels (rGO-Au DAGs) with interconnected rGO nanosheets and Au nanowires showed high conductivity, large surface area and good biocompatibility. Thus, it was employed as an excellent matrix to immobilize enzyme for high-efficient bioelectrocatalysis. Taking bilirubin oxidase as an example, a more positive on-set potential (0.60 V) and a larger catalytic current density (0.77 mA cm^-2@0.40 V) than those of other rGO-Au assemblies were achieved for direct bioelectrocatalytic O₂ reduction. This study will provide an efficient strategy for unique dual-structural aerogels design and shed light to develop new functional materials for bioelectrocatalytic applications such as biosensors and biofuel cells.

Pd nanoparticles decorated on Schiff base-modified chitosan/CeO2 as a heterogeneous and retriable nanocatalyst for Heck reactions and remediation of environmental pollutants

In this paper, we have developed a novel, highly active, eco-friendly, and versatile heterogeneous catalyst system in which Pd nanoparticles are decorated on Schiff base-modified chitosan‑cerium oxide particles (Pd@CS-CeO₂). In order to confirm the successful fabrication of Pd@CS-CeO₂, FTIR, XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, TG/DTG, and EDS analyses were performed, and its performance was evaluated as a heterogeneous nanocatalyst in Heck coupling reaction and reduction of nitro compounds. The catalytic tests showed that the desired Heck products were readily produced by Pd@CS-CeO₂ without being contaminated with the aryl iodides, bromides, and chlorides. Moreover, different nitro compounds were efficiently reduced to corresponding amino compounds by Pd@CS-CeO₂ within 95-160 s. Thanks to the heterogeneous nature of Pd@CS-CeO₂ catalyst, it was easily recovered via simple filtration and reused up to 5 successive runs by giving 88 % yield. Due to its good catalytic and reusability performance together with stability/durability, Pd@CS-CeO₂ is promising candidate as a catalyst for various catalytic or organic reactions.

Nano-sized and microporous palladium catalyst supported on modified chitosan/cigarette butt composite for treatment of environmental contaminants

This study reports a versatile process for the fabrication of a microporous heterogeneous palladium nanocatalyst on a novel spherical, biodegradable, and chemically/physically resistant catalyst support consisting of chitosan (CS) and cigarette waste-derived activated carbon (CAC). The physicochemical properties of the microporous Pd-CS-CAC nanocatalyst developed were successfully determined by FTIR, XRD, FE-SEM, TEM, BET, and EDS techniques. TEM studies showed that the average particle size of the synthesized Pd NPs was about 30 nm. The catalytic prowess of microporous Pd-CS-CAC was evaluated in the reduction/decolorization of various nitroarenes (2-nitroaniline (2-NA), 4-nitroaniline (4-NA), 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), and 4-nitro-o-phenylenediamine (4-NPD)) and organic dyes (methyl red (MR), methyl orange (MO), methylene blue (MB), congo red (CR), and rhodamine B (RhB)) in an aqueous medium in the presence of NaBH₄ as the reducing agent at room temperature. The catalytic activities were studied by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy of the supernatant at regular time intervals. The short reaction times, mild reaction conditions, high efficiency (100% conversion), easy separation, and excellent chemical stability of the catalyst due to its heterogeneity and reusability are the advantages of this method. The results of the tests showed that reduction/decolorization reactions were successfully carried out within 10-140 s due to the good catalytic ability of Pd-CS-CAC. Moreover, Pd-CS-CAC was reused for 5 consecutive times with no loss of the initial shape, size, and morphology, confirming that it was a sustainable and robust nanocatalyst.

Highly improved pH-Responsive anticancer drug delivery and T2-Weighted MRI imaging by magnetic MOF CuBTC-based nano/microcomposite

Cu-BTC framework has received a considerable attention in recent years as a drug carrier candidate for cancer treatment due to its unique structural properties and promising biocompatibility. However, its intrinsic deficiency for medical imaging potentially limits its bioapplications; To address this subject, a magnetic nano/microscale MOF has been successfully fabricated by introducing Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles as an imaging agent into the porous isoreticular MOF [Cu₃(BTC)₂] as a drug carrier. The synthesized magnetic MOFs exhibits a high loading capacity (40.5%) toward the model anticancer DOX with an excellent pH-responsive drug release. The proposed nanocomposite not only possesses large surface area, high magnetic response, large mesopore volume, high transverse relaxivity (r ²) and good stability but also exhibits superior biocompatibility, specific tumor cellular uptake, and significant cancer cell viability inhibitory effect without any targeting agent. It is expected that the synthesized magnetic nano/microcomposite may be used for clinical purposes and can also serve as a platform for photoactive antibacterial therapy ae well as pH/GSH/photo-triple-responsive nanocarrier.

Efficient activation of persulfate by C@Fe3O4 in visible-light for tetracycline degradation

A C@Fe₃O₄ material, Fe₃O₄ coated with carbon, was prepared by a simple one-pot hydrothermal method. The C@Fe₃O₄ material was investigated with persulfate (PS) and light to degrade tetracycline (TC) as a function of pH, aeration conditions and quenching. Experimental results suggest that TC was effectively degraded in the C@Fe₃O₄/PS/Vis system. In addition, due to the availability of different main active species in this catalytic system, TC degradation was possible under both strong acid and strong alkali pH conditions. The presence of dissolved oxygen can also generate oxygen-active species, such as superoxide radicals (O₂•^-) and singlet oxygen (¹O₂), to decompose TC organic matter in solution. Simply put, C@Fe₃O₄/PS/Vis catalytic system removed pollutants by the formation of O₂•^-, ¹O₂, hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and sulfate radicals (SO₄•^-) species for degrading TC. In addition, the stability of the C@Fe₃O₄ material was found to be outstanding.

Preparation of Fe3O4@PDA@Au@GO Composite as SERS Substrate and Its Application in the Enrichment and Detection for Phenanthrene

In this study, highly active Fe₃O₄@PDA@Au@GO surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) active substrate was synthesized for application in the enrichment and detection of trace polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the environment. The morphology and structure were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV–visible absorption spectrum (UV–vis spectra). The effect of each component of Fe₃O₄@PDA@Au@GO nanocomposites on SERS was explored, and it was found that gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) are crucial to enhance the Raman signal based on the electromagnetic enhancement mechanism, and apart from enriching the PAHs through π–π interaction, graphene oxide (GO) also generates strong chemical enhancement of Raman signals, and polydopamine (PDA) can prevent Au from shedding and agglomeration. The existence of Fe3O4 aided the quick separation of substrate from the solutions, which greatly simplified the detection procedure and facilitated the reuse of the substrate. The SERS active substrate was used to detect phenanthrene in aqueous solution with a detection limit of 10⁻⁷ g/L (5.6 × 10⁻¹⁰ mol/L), which is much lower than that of ordinary Raman, it is promising for application in the enrichment and detection of trace PAHs.

Microplastic Removal and Degradation by Mussel-Inspired Adhesive Magnetic/Enzymatic Microrobots

Ubiquitous pollution by microplastics is causing significant deleterious effects on marine life and human health through the food chain and has become a big challenge for the global ecosystem. It is of great urgency to find a cost-efficient and biocompatible material to remove microplastics from the environment. Mimicking basic characteristics of the adhesive chemistry practiced by marine mussels, adhesive polydopamine (PDA)@Fe₃ O₄ magnetic microrobots (MagRobots) are prepared by coating Fe₃ O₄ nanoparticles with a polymeric layer of dopamine via one-step self-polymerization. In addition, lipase is loaded on the PDA@Fe₃ O₄ MagRobots' surface to perform microplastic enzymatic degradation. The synthesized MagRobots, which are externally triggered by transversal rotating magnetic field, have the capacity to clear away the targeted microplastics due to their strong sticky characteristics. With the adhesive PDA@Fe₃ O₄ MagRobots on their surfaces, the microplastics can be navigated along an arbitrarily predefined path by a rotating field and removed using a directional magnetic field. Such adhesive MagRobots are envisioned to be used in swarms to remove microplastics from aqueous environments.

Graphene-Based Hybrid Functional Materials

Graphene is a 2D material combining numerous outstanding physical properties, including high flexibility and strength, extremely high thermal conductivity and electron mobility, transparency, etc., which make it a unique testbed to explore fundamental physical phenomena. Such physical properties can be further tuned by combining graphene with other nanomaterials or (macro)molecules to form hybrid functional materials, which by design can display not only the properties of the individual components but also exhibit new properties and enhanced characteristics arising from the synergic interaction of the components. The implementation of the hybrid approach to graphene also allows boosting the performances in a multitude of technological applications. This review reports the hybrids formed by graphene combined with other low-dimensional nanomaterials of diverse dimensionality (0D, 1D, and 2D) and (macro)molecules, with emphasis on the synthetic methods. The most important applications of these hybrids in the fields of sensing, water purification, energy storage, biomedical, (photo)catalysis, and opto(electronics) are also reviewed, with a special focus on the superior performances of these hybrids compared to the individual, nonhybridized components.

Single-crystalline Fe7S8/Fe3O4 coated zero-valent iron synthesized with vacuum chemical vapor deposition technique: Enhanced reductive, oxidative and photocatalytic activity for water purification

Well-defined core/shell type single crystalline Fe₇S₈/Fe₃O₄ coated α-Fe hybrids (Fe₇S₈/Fe₃O₄@Fe) are synthesized with vacuum chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique. The CVD process triggers conversion of naturally formed Fe₃O₄ layer on the surface of commercial Fe nanoparticles from amorphous into single crystalline phase. The Fe₇S₈/Fe₃O₄ coat promotes the surface affinity of dissolved oxygen and targets and rapidly transfers electrons from the Fe core to targets, which decreases water splitting on Fe₇S₈/Fe₃O₄@Fe surface and endows Fe₇S₈/Fe₃O₄@Fe with ultra-strong reducibility and improved oxidative ability under different conditions. Different with the sulfurized ZVI prepared with hydrothermal or solvothermal method, the increase of reaction solution pH is retarded due to the relieved water splitting instead of releasing H⁺ via oxidation of S^2-/S₂^2- on the Fe₇S₈ coat. The cooperation of Fe₇S₈ with Fe₃O₄ and α-Fe not only improves the anti-oxidation ability of Fe₇S₈ coating but also broadens its band gap. By using Fe₇S₈/Fe₃O₄@Fe nanohybrids as photocatalysts, light irradiation accelerates the degradation of organic pollutants combined with enhanced mineralization efficiency. The Fe₇S₈/Fe₃O₄@Fe exhibits good performance when it is utilized to treat the influent from a municipal sewage treatment plant upon air aeration or under visible light and solar light irradiation.

Modern Catalysts in A3- Coupling Reactions

Propargylamines are an important constituent of diverse, biologically active and industrially valuable compounds. These useful, convenient and effective compounds can be synthesized via the A3-coupling reactions between an aldehyde, amine, and alkyne in the presence of a catalyst. In the past years, most of the catalysts containing transition metals were applied in these reactions, but today, various heterogeneous catalysts, especially nanocatalysts are used. The purpose of this review was to introduce some modern catalysts for the A3-coupling reaction.

Hybrid Microgels for Catalytic and Photocatalytic Removal of Nitroarenes and Organic Dyes From Aqueous Medium: A Review

Polymer microgels loaded with inorganic nanoparticles have gained much attention as catalytic systems for reduction of toxic chemicals. Enhanced catalytic properties of hybrid microgels are related to the stimuli responsive nature of microgels and extraordinary stability of nanoparticles within network of polymer microgels. Catalytic properties of hybrid microgels can be tuned very easily by slight variation in environmental conditions. Herein we have reviewed catalytic reduction of toxic chemicals such as nitroarenes and organic dyes in the presence of appropriate hybrid microgel catalytic systems under different operating conditions of reaction. Recent advancements in catalytic behavior of hybrid microgels with special emphasis on their ability to catalytically degrade various toxic chemicals has been presented in this review.

An ultrasensitive electrochemical aptasensor for the determination of tumor exosomes based on click chemistry

Exosomes, lipid bilayer membrane vesicles, can guide various pathological and physiological processes. However, reliable, convenient and sensitive methods for exosome determination for early cancer diagnosis are still technically challenging. Herein, an electrochemical aptasensor based on click chemistry and the DNA hybridization chain reaction (HCR) for signal amplification has been developed for the ultrasensitive detection of tumor exosomes. CD63 aptamer was first immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode for capturing exosomes, and 4-oxo-2-nonenal alkyne (alkynyl-4-ONE) molecules, functionalized lipid electrophiles, were conjugated to the exosomes via the reaction of amino and aldehyde groups. Azide-labeled DNA probe as an anchor was then connected to the exosomes by copper (I)-catalyzed click chemistry. Signal amplification was achieved by HCR, and the numerous linked horseradish peroxidase (HRP) molecules could catalyze the reaction of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) and H₂O₂. The concentration of exosomes could be quantified by monitoring the electrochemical reduction current of 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP). Under the optimal conditions, this method allowed the sensitive detection of exosomes in the range of 1.12 × 10² to 1.12 × 10⁸ particles/μL with a limit of detection (LOD) of 96 particles/μL. Furthermore, the present assay enabled sensitive and accurate quantification of exosomes in human serum, and it has high potential for exosome analysis in clinical samples.

Sensitive colorimetric detection of ochratoxin A by a dual-functional Au/Fe3O4 nanohybrid-based aptasensor

A novel colorimetric aptasensor based on a Au/Fe₃O₄ nanohybrid was developed to detect ochratoxin A (OTA). The aptasensor is composed of a free OTA aptamer, a Au/Fe₃O₄ nanohybrid coated with biotinylated complementary DNA of the OTA aptamer (biotin-cDNA-Au/Fe₃O₄), and free alkaline-phosphatase-labeled streptavidin (SA-ALP). The Au/Fe₃O₄ nanohybrid not only immobilizes biotin-cDNA but also magnetically separates SA-ALP from the sample solution. One part of the OTA aptamer sequence hybridizes with biotin-cDNA immobilized on Au/Fe₃O₄, and the left part of the OTA aptamer sequence covers the biotin and blocks the specific interaction between biotin and SA-ALP. OTA can interrupt the interaction of OTA aptamer binding to biotin-cDNA-Au/Fe₃O₄ and can inhibit the shielding effect of the OTA aptamer on biotin. The amount of SA-ALP that can be captured by biotin-cDNA-Au/Fe₃O₄ thus increases with increasing OTA concentration. Through a simple magnetic separation, the collected SA-ALP-linked Au/Fe₃O₄ can produce a yellow-colored solution in the presence of p-nitrophenyl phosphate (p-NPP). This colorimetric aptasensor can detect OTA as low as 1.15 ng mL⁻¹ with high specificity.

Mussel-Inspired Catechol-Formaldehyde Resin-Coated Fe3O4 Core-Shell Magnetic Nanospheres: An Effective Catalyst Support for Highly Active Palladium Nanoparticles

Magnetic Fe₃O₄@catechol-formaldehyde resin (CFR) core-shell nanospheres were fabricated via a controllable hydrothermal method. The shell thickness of Fe₃O₄@CFR nanospheres can be effectively regulated in the range of 10-170 nm via adjusting reaction parameters. In particular, catechol groups on the surface of nanospheres also play a significant role in mussel-inspired chemistry to further combine with graphene oxide (GO) to wrap the Fe₃O₄@CFR spheres. The obtained Fe₃O₄@CFR and Fe₃O₄@CFR@GO nanospheres can be used as the effective catalyst supports of small Pd nanoparticles (PdNPs, <10 nm) formed via an in situ synthesis route. The as-fabricated nanohybrid catalysts of Fe₃O₄@CFR@PdNPs and Fe₃O₄@CFR@GO@PdNPs with excellent dispersibility and stability are reusable after magnetic separation from catalytic systems. In particular, a super active performance was demonstrated for the catalytic reduction of methylene blue dye with highest turnover frequency (5260 min^-1) yet reported in the literature using a very low dosage of the Fe₃O₄@CFR@GO@PdNP catalyst. In addition, the Fe₃O₄@CFR@GO@PdNP catalyst also exhibits a highly catalytic efficiency for the Suzuki coupling reaction using pure water as a green solvent at room temperature.

Magnetically Separable Nanocatalyst with the Fe3O4 Core and Polydopamine-Sandwiched Au Nanocrystal Shell

This work reports a novel Fe₃O₄@polydopamine/Au/polydopamine core/shell nanocomposite toward a magnetically separable nanocatalyst. Because the polydopamine (PDA) layer-sandwiched Au nanocrystals were prepared by a layer-by-layer method, the content of Au could be controlled by varying the Au shell number (such as burger-like Fe₃O₄@PDA/Au/PDA/Au/PDA). Fe₃O₄@PDA/Au/PDA exhibited excellent catalytic activity in reducing p-nitrophenol because the substrate could penetrate the PDA shell. Owing to the protection of the PDA shell, Fe₃O₄@PDA/Au/PDA presented higher cyclability than Fe₃O₄@PDA/Au. The activity of Fe₃O₄@PDA/Au/PDA maintained 95% after 7 cycles, while that of Fe₃O₄@PDA/Au was only 61%. The detailed cycling catalytic mechanism was investigated, and it was found that the catalytic rate of Fe₃O₄@PDA/Au/PDA/Au/PDA was faster than that of Fe₃O₄@PDA/Au/PDA because of the higher Au content. Interestingly, this method could be extended for other magnetic nanocomposites with two different kinds of noble metal nanocrystals integrated within one particle, such as Fe₃O₄@PDA/Au/PDA/Ag/PDA and Fe₃O₄@PDA/Au/PDA/Pd/PDA.

Self-Assembly of Graphene-Encapsulated Cu Composites for Nonenzymatic Glucose Sensing

Cu has recently received great interest as a potential candidate for glucose sensing to overcome the problems with noble metals. In this work, reduced graphene oxide-encapsulated Cu nanoparticles (Cu@RGO) have been prepared via an electrostatic self-assembly method. This core/shell composites were found to be more stable than conventional Cu-decorated graphene composites and bare copper nanoparticles in an air atmosphere because the graphene shell can effectively protect the Cu nanoparticles from oxidation. In addition, the obtained Cu@RGO composites also showed an outstanding electrocatalytic activity toward glucose oxidation with a wide linear detection range of 1 μM to 2 mM, low detection limit of 0.34 μM (S/N = 3), and a sensitivity of 150 μA mM-1 cm-2. Moreover, Cu@RGO composites exhibited a satisfactory reproducibility, selectivity, and long effective performance. These excellent properties indicated that Cu@RGO nanoparticles have great potential application in glucose detection.

Facile loading of Ag nanoparticles onto magnetic microsphere by the aid of a tannic acid-Metal polymer layer to synthesize magnetic disinfectant with high antibacterial activity

In this article, Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were easily loaded onto magnetic material through a tannic acid-metal polymer (PTA) intermedia layer to synthesize Fe₃O₄@PTA@Ag magnetic composite and the potential application as bactericidal agent for water disinfection was investigated. The as-obtained composite, with a Fe₃O₄ core of 150nm, has plenty of Ag NPs of 15nm adhered onto the PTA layer outside the core. The PTA layer, like the famous polydopamine complex, possesses excellent adhesive capacity to load more Ag NPs tightly and has specific antibacterial activity due to the numerous catechol groups. Therefore, remarkable bactericidal activity was achieved and 31.25mgL^-1 of Fe₃O₄@PTA@Ag disinfectant could inactivate more than 99% of the tested strains within 60min. At the same time, the catechol groups also endow the PTA layer with reduction ability so that additional reductant is unnecessary during the formation of Ag NPs and the PTA complex can be fabricated much more rapidly. As a result, the magnetic composite can be synthesized simply with less cost. Moreover, the composite has a high magnetic saturation value of 55.47emug^-1 owing to the Fe₃O₄ core and the magnetic separation ability can play an important role in the recovery of the disinfectant.

Catalytic reduction of 2-nitroaniline: a review

2-nitroaniline (2-NA) is highly toxic and environmental contaminant. It is reduced to less toxic and environmental benign product o-phenylenediamine by using different reducing agents like sodium borohydride, potassium borohydride, or hydrazine hydrate in the presence of various catalytic systems. These catalytic systems have various advantages and drawbacks. Silica-supported gold nanoparticles are frequently reported catalyst for the reduction of 2-nitroaniline in aqueous medium. In this review article, different catalytic systems reported for reduction of o-nitroaniline under various reaction conditions have been discussed. The critical review of the recent research progress for development of novel catalysts used for the reduction of 2-nitroaniline has been provided here.

Polydopamine as a bridge to decorate monodisperse gold nanoparticles on Fe3O4 nanoclusters for the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol

The in situ assembly of Au nanoparticles on Fe₃O₄@PDA showed excellent recyclability and good stability for the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol.

Mussel-inspired approach to constructing robust cobalt-embedded N-doped carbon nanosheet toward enhanced sulphate radical-based oxidation

Heterogeneous sulphate radical based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) have lately been raised as a promising candidate for water treatment. Despite the progress made, either the stability or the performance of the current catalysts is still far from satisfactory for practical applications. Herein, using polydopamine-cobalt ion complex that inspired by mussel proteins as medium, we facilely fabricate a robust SR-AOPs catalyst with cobalt nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide matrix (NRGO@Co). The NRGO scaffold with high porosity and surface area not only stabilizes the NPs but also greatly facilitates the accessibility and adsorption of substrates to the active sites. With the synergistic effect arising from the NRGO and Co NPs, the NRGO@Co hybrid catalyst exhibits enhanced catalytic activity for activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade organic pollutants in water. Furthermore, taking advantage of the favorable magnetic properties, the catalyst can be easily recycled and reused for at least 4 runs with negligible loss of activity. Coupled with systematic investigation in terms of influential factors, mineralization, and radicals identification, make the catalyst hold significant potential for application in remediation of organic pollutants in water.

Shielding the chemical reactivity using graphene layers for controlling the surface properties of carbon materials

Graphene can efficiently shield chemical interactions and gradually decrease the binding to reactive defect areas. In the present study, we have used the observed graphene shielding effect to control the reactivity patterns on the carbon surface. The experimental findings show that a surface coating with a tiny carbon layer of 1-2 nm thickness is sufficient to shield the defect-mediated reactivity and create a surface with uniform binding ability. The shielding effect was directly observed using a combination of microscopy techniques and evaluated with computational modeling. The theoretical calculations indicate that a few graphene layers can drastically reduce the binding energy of the metal centers to the surface defects by 40-50 kcal mol(-1). The construction of large carbon areas with controlled surface reactivity is extremely difficult, which is a key limitation in many practical applications. Indeed, the developed approach provides a flexible and simple tool to change the reactivity patterns on large surface areas within a few minutes.

Synthesis of Self-Assembled Multifunctional Nanocomposite Catalysts with Highly Stabilized Reactivity and Magnetic Recyclability

In this paper, a multifunctional Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-Au/Ag@PDA nanocomposite catalyst with highly stabilized reactivity and magnetic recyclability was synthesized by a self-assembled method. The magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles were coated with a thin layer of the SiO2 to obtain a negatively charged surface. Then positively charged poly(ethyleneimine) polymer (PEI) was self-assembled onto the Fe3O4@SiO2 by electrostatic interaction. Next, negatively charged glutathione capped gold nanoparticles (GSH-AuNPs) were electrostatically self-assembled onto the Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI. After that, silver was grown on the surface of the nanocomposite due to the reduction of the dopamine in the alkaline solution. An about 5 nm thick layer of polydopamine (PDA) was observed to form the Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-Au/Ag@PDA nanocomposite. The Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-Au/Ag@PDA nanocomposite was carefully characterized by the SEM, TEM, FT-IR, XRD and so on. The Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-Au/Ag@PDA nanocomposite shows a high saturation magnetization (Ms) of 48.9 emu/g, which allows it to be attracted rapidly to a magnet. The Fe3O4@SiO2@PEI-Au/Ag@PDA nanocomposite was used to catalyze the reduction of p-nitrophenol (4-NP) to p-aminophenol (4-AP) as a model system. The reaction kinetic constant k was measured to be about 0.56 min(-1) (R(2) = 0.974). Furthermore, the as-prepared catalyst can be easily recovered and reused for 8 times, which didn't show much decrease of the catalytic capability.

Synthesis of akageneite (beta-FeOOH)/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites for oxidative decomposition of 2-chlorophenol by Fenton-like reaction

In this work, the composite of reduced graphene oxide and akageneite (Ak/rGO) was synthesised by co-precipitating and reduction processes. The morphological and structural features of the synthesized composites (Ak/rGO) were characterized by XRD, SEM, BET, FTIR, Zeta potential and XPS. The results revealed that (1) beta-FeOOH was successfully loaded on the reduced graphene oxide (rGO); (2) the presence of strong interfacial interactions (Fe-O-C bonds) between rGO and beta-FeOOH was observed; (3) the reduction of graphene oxide may be inhabited in the formation process of beta-FeOOH, producing rGO sheets rather than rGO sphere. In the heterogeneous Fenton-like reaction, the degradation rate constants of 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) increased 2-5 times after the addition of rGO probably due to the Fe-O-C bond. The increase of the content of rGO could contribute to the removal of 2-CP, due to the synergy of catalysis and 2-CP adsorption towards Ak/rGO. In this study, the Ak/rGO composite has exhibited great potential and significant prospects for environmental application.

Facile synthesis of reduced graphene oxide-gold nanohybrid for potential use in industrial waste-water treatment

Here, we report a facile approach, by the photochemical reduction technique, for in situ synthesis of Au-reduced graphene oxide (Au-RGO) nanohybrids, which demonstrate excellent adsorption capacities and recyclability for a broad range of dyes. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data confirm the successful synthesis of Au-RGO nanohybrids. The effect of several experimental parameters (temperature and pH) variation can effectively control the dye adsorption capability. Furthermore, kinetic adsorption data reveal that the adsorption process follows a pseudo second-order model. The negative value of Gibbs free energy (ΔG⁰) confirms spontaneity while the positive enthalpy (ΔH⁰) indicates the endothermic nature of the adsorption process. Picosecond resolved fluorescence technique unravels the excited state dynamical processes of dye molecules adsorbed on the Au-RGO surface. Time resolved fluorescence quenching of Rh123 after adsorption on Au-RGO nanohybrids indicates efficient energy transfer from Rh123 to Au nanoparticles. A prototype device has been fabricated using Au-RGO nanohybrids on a syringe filter (pore size: 0.220 μm) and the experimental data indicate efficient removal of dyes from waste water with high recyclability. The application of this nanohybrid may lead to the development of an efficient reusable adsorbent in portable water purification.
