Abstract
Several first-row transition metal complexes of the 1,9-bis(2',4',6'-triphenylphenyl)-5-mesityl dipyrrinato ligand and its tetrahalogenated analogues have been synthesized and their luminescence spectra obtained. The protonated ligands, as well as the Li(i), Mn(ii), Cu(i), Cu(ii), and Zn(ii) chelates show appreciable luminescence, despite the paramagnetism of the Mn(ii) and Cu(ii) ions. Fluorescence quantum yields (ΦF) as high as 0.67 were observed for the zinc complex. Luminescence was partially quenched by the introduction of heavy halogens to the backbone of the ligand, as well as by the introduction of paramagnetic metal ions. Room-temperature, solution state phosphorescence was observed from the halogenated dipyrrinato lithium salts, as well as from the non-halogenated Mn(ii) complex.

Abstract
A [Fe3O4/polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP)]//[Tb(BA)3phen/PVP] Janus nanofiber array pellicle (denoted JNAP) was successfully constructed by facile conjugate electrospinning without twisting for the first time. The JNAP offers the dual-functionality of fluorescence and magnetism. This technology entirely solves the dilemma of the magnetic spinning dope and fluorescent spinning dope being easily mixed together during the parallel electrospinning process, as it achieves complete segregation of magnetic nanoparticles and fluorescent molecules. Moreover, conjugate electrospinning without twisting has fewer requirements on the viscosity of the spinning dope compared with parallel electrospinning, in which the two spinning dopes should have the same viscosity. It was satisfactorily found that the JNAP has higher fluorescence intensity than the corresponding non-aligned Janus nanofiber pellicle. The magnetism of the JNAP could be tailored by changing the doping amount of the Fe3O4 NPs. The JNAP has potential applications in nanotechnology and biomedicine, etc., due to its enhanced green fluorescence and adjustable magnetism. In addition, this design concept and manufacturing process provide a facile way for preparing other one-dimensional Janus nanomaterials with multifunctionality. A [Fe3O4/PVP]//[Tb(BA)3phen/PVP] Janus nanofiber array pellicle with enhanced green fluorescence and adjustable magnetism dual-functionality was constructed via facile conjugate electrospinning.![]()

Dye-embedded YAG:Ce 3+@SiO 2 composite phosphors toward warm wLEDs through radiative energy transfer: preparation, characterization and luminescence properties. NANOSCALE 2018; 10:22237-22251. Abstract
The most common yellow phosphor for wLEDs, Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ (YAG:Ce3+), suffers from a deficiency of red in its spectral content of light. In this paper, a new strategy is provided to tailor the Ce3+ spectral profile through surface-located dye molecules of ATTO-Rho101, which feature intense, broad absorption in the green-yellow spectral region of Ce3+ emission as well as bright red emission. Sphere-shaped and highly dispersed micrometer and nanometer-sized YAG:Ce3+ (micro/nano-YAG:Ce3+) was synthesized through a modified solvothermal method. Surface SiO2 coating and simultaneous dye embedding were performed on the solvothermally derived YAG:Ce3+, heat-treated micro-YAG:Ce3+ and commercial phosphors. Efficient radiative transfer/reabsorption from Ce3+ in the inner core of YAG to the dye molecules in the SiO2 outer shell, irrespective of the size of the phosphors, was demonstrated in the accumulated YAG:Ce3+@SiO2 + dye powder upon blue light excitation; this enhanced its red emission. Fluorescence microscopy was demonstrated to be a powerful tool to identify the reabsorption phenomenon of the powdered materials. Packaging the heat-treated micro-YAG:Ce3+@SiO2 + dye phosphors on blue LED chips yielded a warm wLED (Ra∼ 93), but an Ra of only ∼79 was obtained for the wLED with commercial YAG:Ce3+@(SiO2 + dye)5 due to the low concentration of phosphors dispersed in the epoxy resin and the resulting decreased reabsorption by dye molecules. Surface-protonated amine species were found to induce Ce3+→ Ce4+ oxidation upon activation by heating or photoirradiation and then quench the photoluminescence (PL) of micro-YAG:Ce3+ even after surface modification by SiO2, YAG or being embedded in an epoxy resin matrix. High calcination temperatures greatly improved the PL stability of micro-YAG:Ce3+ through the removal of surface-capped species. The dye in the silica matrix showed high stability against heating and irradiation due to the so-called "caging effects"; however, decreased photo-stability was found in commercial YAG:Ce3+@(SiO2 + dye)5 due to the incomplete and/or loose SiO2 layer grown during multiple surface modifications.

Abstract
Linking multiple paramagnetic gadolinium(III)-chelates based on the 2-[4,7,10-tris(carboxymethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododec-1-yl]acetate (DOTA) ligand to the surface of NaGdF4:Yb(3+),Tm(3+) upconverting nanoparticles with an average particle size of 20 nm resulted in an assembly that has favorable properties for bimodal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Optical Imaging (OI). An improved synthetic pathway was used to couple the paramagnetic precursor to the nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were rendered water dispersible via citrate capping, leaving one acid group free for amide coupling with the mono-amino precursor of the DOTA ligand. Luminescence spectroscopy measurements have shown that the excitation of the nanoconstruct at 980 nm resulted in intense upconverted emission of thulium(III) at 800 nm. The assembly of several paramagnetic centers on the nanoparticle scaffold reduces the overall tumbling rate, resulting in enhanced longitudinal relaxation times and improved relaxivity. The proton NMRD profiles show a characteristic hump at higher frequencies, which is caused by the slow rotation of the nanoconstruct, resulting in r1 values of 25 mM(-1) s(-1) per gadolinium(III)-ion at 60 MHz and 310 K. This is a significant improvement compared to the Gd-DO3A-ethylamine precursor (4) for which a value of r1 of 3.23 mM(-1) s(-1) was observed under the same conditions. Theoretical fitting by two different approaches showed an increase of τR from 57.3 ps for the Gd-DO3A-ethylamine precursor (4) to 392.0 ps for the nanoconstruct, which is responsible for the overall substantial increase in relaxivity.

Abstract
A new type of bifunctional magnetic-fluorescent Fe3O4@SiO2-PDI-PAA/Ca(2+) nanoparticles has been prepared by coating PDI-cored star polymers (PDI-PAA) onto the surface of Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell nanostructures. The morphology and properties of the composite nanoparticles are investigated by transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectrometry, fluorescence spectrometry, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The composite nanoparticles display a strong red emission and superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature. The cell viability and uptake assays reveal good biocompatibility of these hybrid nanoparticles. Hence, the composite nanoparticles are of potential to be further explored as therapeutic vector in biomedical field.

Abstract
The magnetic-fluorescent nanoparticles are the integration of fluorophores and magnetic nanoparticles (MNP), which are superior to traditional single-modal nanoparticles. Here, we develop magnetic nanoparticles functionalized by acridine orange (ACO) for labeling nucleus and separating DNA. The ACO, a cell-permeant nucleic acid binding dye, is conjugated with amine on magnetic nanoparticles by glutaraldehyde-mediated coupling and characterized by TEM and FT-IR. Fluorescence spectroscopy, INCell analyzer, and confocal microscopy analyses confirmed the fluorescent property of ACO modified MNP. Furthermore, the modified magnetic nanoparticles showed strong intracellular fluorescence when incubated with 293T cells for a short period of time. The adsorption capacities measured at various concentrations showed enhanced adsorption capacities for double or single stranded DNA when compared to amine MNP conjugated with glutaraldehyde. The cell viability tests of the composite nanoparticles on 293T cells showed low cytotoxicity indicating the safeness of the nanoparticles. The modified magnetic nanoparticles pave a versatile platform for biological applications such as cell labeling and DNA adsorption.
