Highly Responsive Ultraviolet Sensor Based on ZnS Quantum Dot Solid with Enhanced Photocurrent

Detection of visible blind UV radiation is not only interesting but also of technologically important. Herein, we demonstrate the efficient detection of UV radiation by using cluster like ZnS quantum dot solid nanostructures prepared by simple reflux condensation technique. The short-chain ligand 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) involved in the synthesis lead to the cluster like formation of ZnS quantum dots into solids upon prolonged synthesis conditions. The ZnS QD solid formation resulted in the strong delocalization of electronic wave function between the neighboring quantum dots. It increases the photocurrent value, which can be further confirmed by the decrease in the average lifetime values from 64 to 4.6 ns upon ZnS cluster like QD solid formation from ZnS QDs. The ZnS quantum dot solid based UV sensor shows good photocurrent response and a maximum responsivity of 0.31 (A/W) at a wavelength of 390 nm, is not only competitive when compared with previous reports but also better than ZnS and metal oxide-based photodetectors. The device exhibits a high current value under low-intensity UV light source and an on/off ratio of IUV/Idark = 413 at zero biasing voltage with a fast response. Further, photocurrent device has been constructed using ZnS quantum dot solid nanostructures with graphene hybrids as an active layer to improve the enhancement of photoresponsivity.

Perovskite-Like Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Lead Iodide with a Large Organic Cation Incorporated within the Layers

A great effort has been made to investigate 2D perovskites to improve the stability and controllability in the fabrication of photoelectronic devices. As far as we know, only small organic cations such as methylammonium can incorporate into the multilayered perovskite structure except the cations sandwiched between the inorganic layers. We report here a new layered lead iodide, (H₂Aepz)₃Pb₄I₁₄ (1), where larger organic cations, bis-protonated 2-(2-aminoethyl)pyrazole (Aepz), not only were sandwiched between the inorganic layers but also were incorporated within the perovskite-like PbI layered structure. Another 2D compound, (H₂Aepz)PbI₄ (2), was also prepared that was a one-layer perovskite. A simple Schottky device was prepared to investigate the photoelectroresponsive properties of the compounds in comparison with that of a typical organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite. In general, the energy gap is decreased with an increase in the perovskite layers, but the band gap of two-layered 1 is larger than that of one-layered 2. The photocurrent densities of the compounds are in the order of 1 < 2 < (CH₃NH₃)PbI₃, which is discussed based on the crystal structures and band energy gaps.

High-performance ultraviolet photodetectors based on solution-grown ZnS nanobelts sandwiched between graphene layers

Ultraviolet (UV) light photodetectors constructed from solely inorganic semiconductors still remain unsatisfactory because of their low electrical performances. To overcome this limitation, the hybridization is one of the key approaches that have been recently adopted to enhance the photocurrent. High-performance UV photodetectors showing stable on-off switching and excellent spectral selectivity have been fabricated based on the hybrid structure of solution-grown ZnS nanobelts and CVD-grown graphene. Sandwiched structures and multilayer stacking strategies have been applied to expand effective junction between graphene and photoactive ZnS nanobelts. A multiply sandwich-structured photodetector of graphene/ZnS has shown a photocurrent of 0.115 mA under illumination of 1.2 mWcm(-2) in air at a bias of 1.0 V, which is higher 10(7) times than literature values. The multiple-sandwich structure of UV-light sensors with graphene having high conductivity, flexibility, and impermeability is suggested to be beneficial for the facile fabrication of UV photodetectors with extremely efficient performances.

Synthesis of vertical aligned TiO2@polyaniline core–shell nanorods for high-performance supercapacitors

Ordered TiO₂@polyaniline nanorods exhibiting high specific capacitance were prepared by a simple method. The specific capacitance retention of the product is over 85% after 1000 charge and discharge cycles at a current density of 10 A g⁻¹.

Single inorganic-organic hybrid nanowires with ambipolar photoresponse

We report for the first time single nanowires (NWs) with ambipolar (positive/negative) photoresponse that changes sign depending on the illumination wavelength. The single NWs were grown by the meniscus-guided method using inorganic (ZnO nanoparticles)-organic (PEDOT:PSS) hybrid materials. The ambipolar photoresponse of the single NWs enabled us to develop an unprecedented spectrum-discriminating NW photodetector array.

ZnO(N)-Spiro-MeOTAD hybrid photodiode: an efficient self-powered fast-response UV (visible) photosensor

Organic-inorganic hybrid photo-detectors with a self-sufficient mode of operation represent a research area of great current interest. In most efficient photodetectors and optoelectronic devices compound semiconductors containing toxic elements such as Cd, As, Te, S, Se etc. are used and these are also expensive. Hence there is also a rapidly growing interest in replacing these with environmentally friendly and earth-abundant materials. Herein, we report a facile solution-processed fabrication of a self-powered organic-inorganic hybrid photodetector using n-type oriented ZnO nanorods and p-type Spiro-MeOTAD semiconductor. ZnO is eco-friendly and earth-abundant, and Spiro-MeOTAD is non-hazardous. We show that the latter has far less toxicity than the toxic elements stated above. This visible blind UV photodetector shows high sensitivity (10(2)) and a UV/visible rejection ratio of 300. It also exhibits fast response times of τ(rise) ~ 200 μs and τ(fall) ~ 950 μs. Importantly, with a small modification of nitrogen incorporation in ZnO one can also realize a highly-sensitive self-powered visible light photodetector with at least 1000% (or higher) improvements in quality factors (photocurrent/sensitivity/response time) as compared to previously reported organic-inorganic hybrid photo-detectors based on metal-chalcogenides (CdS-PANI or CuInSe2-P3HT). Interestingly, the broadband sensitivity of such N:ZnO-Spiro-MeOTAD photodiode enables sensing of low intensity (~28 μW cm(-2)) ambient white light with a high photocurrent density of 120 nA cm(-2) making it an efficient ambient white light detector.

Simple one-pot synthesis of ZnO/Ag heterostructures and the application in visible-light-responsive photocatalysis
