Abstract
Synthetic approach to fluorescent polyaza- and polyoxadiazamacrocycles comprising a structural fragment of 6,7-diamino-2,3-diphenylquinoxaline has been elaborated using Pd-catalyzed amination providing target compounds in yields up to 77%. A series of nine novel N- and N,O-containing macrocyclic ligands differing by the number of donor sites and cavity size has been obtained. These compounds possess well-pronounced fluorescent properties with emission maxima in a blue region in aprotic solvents and high quantum yields of fluorescence, while in proton media, fluorescence shifts towards the green region of the spectrum. Using macrocycles 5c and 5e as examples, we have shown that such compounds can serve as dual-channel (colorimetric and fluorimetric) pH indicators in water media, with pH transition point and response being dependent on the macrocycle structure due to different sequences of protonation steps.

Abstract
Carbon nanohoops with donor-acceptor (D-A) structures are attractive electronic materials and biological fluorophores, but their synthesis is usually challenging. Moreover, the preparation of D-A nanohoop fluorophores exhibiting high fluorescence quantum yields beyond 500 nm remains a key challenge. This study presents a modular synthetic approach based on an efficient metal-free cyclocondensation reaction that readily produced nine congeners with D-A or donor-acceptor-donor' (D-A-D') structures, one of which is water-soluble. The tailored molecular design of nanohoops enabled a systematic and detailed study of their host-guest complexation with fullerene, optical properties, and charge transfer (CT) dynamics using X-ray crystallography, fluorescence titration, steady and ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations. The findings revealed intriguing physical properties associated with D-A motifs, such as tight binding with fullerene, moderate fluorescence quantum yields (37-67%) beyond 540 nm, and unique solvation-controlled CT relaxation of D-A-D' nanohoops, where two CT states (D-A and A-D') can be effectively tuned by solvation, resulting in dramatically changed relaxation pathways in different solvents.

Abstract
The 2,6-naphthoquinodimethane (2,6-NQDM) containing S-heterocyclic molecule 6-S was synthesized, and its dual open-shell diradical and dipolar characters were revealed via both experimental and theoretical studies. Unlike the shorter p-quinodimethane (p-QDM)-containing analogue 5-S, which possesses a closed-shell ground state (y0 = 0%) with small dipolar character, 6-S possesses enhanced dipolar character with a singlet diradical ground state (y0 = 23.3%) and a thermally accessible triplet excited state (ΔEST = -4.13 kcal/mol). Despite this, it displays good stability (t1/2 = 41days) under ambient air and light conditions due to its distinctive dipolar character and kinetic blocking of reactive sites.

Abstract
When irradiated with violet light, hexaazatrinaphthylene (HATN) extracts a hydrogen atom from an alcohol forming a long-living hydrogenated species. The kinetic isotope effect for fluorescence decay in deuterated methanol (1.56) indicates that the lowest singlet excited state of the molecule is a precursor for intermolecular hydrogen transfer. The photochemical hydrogenation occurs in several alcohols (methanol, ethanol, isopropanol) but not in water. Hydrogenated HATN can be detected optically by an absorption band at 1.78 eV as well as with EPR and NMR techniques. Mass spectroscopy of photoproducts reveal di-hydrogenated HATN structures along with methoxylated and methylated HATN molecules which are generated through the reaction with methoxy radicals (remnants from alcohol splitting). Experimental findings are consistent with the theoretical results which predicted that for the excited state of the HATN-solvent molecular complex, there exists a barrierless hydrogen transfer from methanol but a barrier for the similar oxidation of water.

Abstract
The electronic effect of tert-butyl groups on intramolecular through-bond interactions between redox units in tetrathiafulvalene-tetraazapyrene (TAP) triads is investigated. The insertion of tert-butyl groups raises the TAP-localised LUMO level by 0.21 eV, in fairly good agreement with 0.17 eV determined by DFT calculations.

Abstract
The cyclohexanehexone (C6O6) octahydrate molecule was claimed to be synthesized as early as 1862. However, the chemical in the 1862 study and the chemicals used in most of the existing studies and sold by most chemical vendors are actually dodecahydroxycyclohexane dihydrate (C6(OH)12·2H2O). Here we revisit our bulk synthesis method of C6O6 by the dehydration of the C6(OH)12·2H2O material, and report the mass spectrum of C6O6 that has been highly challenging to obtain owing to its high sensitivity toward ambient conditions. A new home-built electrospray ionization mass spectrometry setup in a glovebox is utilized to detect C6O6 in the form of C6O6H-. Tandem mass spectrometry MSn (n = 2-4) presents consecutive losses of CO molecules, further confirming the structure of C6O6. Theoretical calculations are performed to recover the chemical bonding of C6O6 and to rationalize the synthetic method. This work provides a benchmark understanding of the historically elusive C6O6.

Abstract
This short critical review is devoted to the synthesis and functionalization of various types of azaacenes, organic semiconducting compounds which can be considered as promising materials for the fabrication of n-channel or ambipolar field effect transistors (FETs), components of active layers in light emitting diodes (LEDs), components of organic memory devices and others. Emphasis is put on the diversity of azaacenes preparation methods and the possibility of tuning their redox and spectroscopic properties by changing the C/N ratio, modifying the nitrogen atoms distribution mode, functionalization with electroaccepting or electrodonating groups and changing their molecular shape. Processability, structural features and degradation pathways of these compounds are also discussed. A unique feature of this review concerns the listed redox potentials of all discussed compounds which were normalized vs. Fc/Fc+. This required, in frequent cases, recalculation of the originally reported data in which these potentials were determined against different types of reference electrodes. The same applied to all reported electron affinities (EAs). EA values calculated using different methods were recalculated by applying the method of Sworakowski and co-workers (Org. Electron. 2016, 33, 300-310) to yield, for the first time, a set of normalized data, which could be directly compared.

Abstract
The electroreduction of CO2 to value-added chemicals such as CO is a promising approach to realize carbon-neutral energy cycle, but still remains big challenge including low current density. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with abundant accessible active single-sites can offer a bridge between homogeneous and heterogeneous electrocatalysis, but the low electrical conductivity limits their application for CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2 RR). Here, a 2D conductive Ni-phthalocyanine-based COF, named NiPc-COF, is synthesized by condensation of 2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octa-aminophthalocyaninato Ni(II) and tert-butylpyrene-tetraone for highly efficient CO2 RR. Due to its highly intrinsic conductivity and accessible active sites, the robust conductive 2D NiPc-COF nanosheets exhibit very high CO selectivity (>93%) in a wide range of the applied potentials of -0.6 to -1.1 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and large partial current density of 35 mA cm-2 at -1.1 V versus RHE in aqueous solution that surpasses all the conventional COF electrocatalysts. The robust NiPc-COF that is bridged by covalent pyrazine linkage can maintain its CO2 RR activity for 10 h. This work presents the implementation of the conductive COF nanosheets for CO2 RR and provides a strategy to enhance energy conversion efficiency in electrocatalysis.

Abstract
The crystal structures of two substituted HATN (hexa-aza-tri-naphthyl-ene) derivatives, namely 2,3,8,9,14,15-hexa-methyl- and 2,3,8,9,14,15-hexa-phenyl-5,6,11,12,17,18- hexa-zatri-naphthyl-ene (HATNMe6 and HATNPh6), are reported. Whereas the structure of the methyl-substituted derivative (HATNMe6) contains no solvent mol-ecules (C30H24N6), the hexa-phenyl-substituted structure (HATNPh6) contains two mol-ecules of di-chloro-methane (C60H36N6·2CH2Cl2). This class of planar bridging ligands is known for its electron-deficient systems and its ability to form π-π stacking inter-actions. Indeed, in both crystal structures strong π-π stacking inter-actions are observed, but with different packing features. The di-chloro-methane mol-ecules in the crystal structure of HATNPh6 are situated in the voids and are involved in C-H⋯N contacts to the nitro-gen atoms of the pyrazine units.

Abstract
The post-cyclization strategy rather than the conventional ante-cyclotetramerization method was employed for the synthesis of multinuclear phthalocyanine-fused molecular nanoarrays. Reaction of 2,3,9,10,16,17-hexakis(2,6-dimethylphenoxy)-23,24-diaminophthalocyaninato zinc(II) with 2,7-di-tert-butylpyrene-4,5-dione, 2,7-di-tert-butylpyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone, and hexaketocyclohexane in refluxing acetic acid afforded the corresponding mono-, bi-, and trinuclear phthalocyanine-fused zinc complexes (Pz-pyrene){Zn[Pc(OC8 H9 )6 ]} (1), (Pz2 -pyrene){Zn[Pc(OC8 H9 )6 ]}2 (2), {(HAT){Zn[Pc(OC8 H9 )6 ]}3 } (3) in 46, 13, and 25 % yield, respectively, which extend the scope of multinuclear phthalocyanine-fused nanoarrays with different molecular skeletons. The self-assembly behavior of trinuclear phthalocyanine 3 in THF/CH3 CN was investigated by electronic absorption spectroscopy and SEM, and the fabricated nanorods showed interesting semiconducting properties, which suggest good application potential of these multinuclear phthalocyanine-fused molecular nanoarrays.

Abstract
Acenes, a type of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon containing linearly fused benzene rings, have received much attention from organic chemists, physical chemists, and materials scientists, due to their intriguing properties and potential applications in organic electronics. Without doubt, acene chemistry has been one of the hottest topics among the π-conjugated systems. However, poor stability of acenes is the prominent issue that limits their applications. In this personal account, we summarize different strategies developed in our group to construct and stabilize acenes and acene analogues. In addition, the unique properties and applications of some molecules will be discussed.

Abstract
A hexaazatriphenylene (HAT) derivative (compound 1) that bears four n-octyl chains and two thienyl groups was designed and synthesized. Further light-induced oxidation coupling reaction led to thienyl-fused compound 2. Their photophysical and electrochemical properties and self-assembly behavior have been investigated by UV/Vis, fluorescence, and (1)H NMR spectroscopies, cyclic voltammetry (CV), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). Although the difference in compounds 1 and 2 only lie in one single bond that connects the two thienyl segments, they displayed remarkably different properties, revealing an interesting structure-property relationship.

Abstract
The interaction of human CK2α (hCK2α) with nine halogenated benzotriazoles, TBBt and its analogues representing all possible patterns of halogenation on the benzene ring of benzotriazole, was studied by biophysical methods. Thermal stability of protein-ligand complexes, monitored by calorimetric (DSC) and optical (DSF) methods, showed that the increase in the mid-point temperature for unfolding of protein-ligand complexes (i.e. potency of ligand binding to hCK2α) follow the inhibitory activities determined by biochemical assays. The dissociation constant for the ATP-hCK2α complex was estimated with the aid of microscale thermophoresis (MST) as 4.3±1.8 μM, and MST-derived dissociation constants determined for halogenated benzotriazoles, when converted according to known ATP concentrations, perfectly reconstruct IC50 values determined by the biochemical assays. Ligand-dependent quenching of tyrosine fluorescence, together with molecular modeling and DSC-derived heats of unfolding, support the hypothesis that halogenated benzotriazoles bind in at least two alternative orientations, and those that are efficient hCK2α inhibitors bind in the orientation which TBBt adopts in its complex with maize CK2α. DSC-derived apparent heat for ligand binding (ΔΔHbind) is driven by intermolecular electrostatic interactions between Lys68 and the triazole ring of the ligand, as indicated by a good correlation between ΔΔHbind and ligand pKa. Overall results, additionally supported by molecular modeling, confirm that a balance of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions contribute predominantly (~40 kJ/mol), relative to possible intermolecular halogen/hydrogen bonding (less than 10 kJ/mol), in binding of halogenated benzotriazoles to the ATP-binding site of hCK2α. This article is part of a Special Issue entitled: Inhibitors of Protein Kinases.

Abstract
Two novel copolymers incorporating N-alkyl-4,7-di(thien-2-yl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-5,6-dicarboxylic imide (DI) and benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene (BDT) units have been designed, synthesized, and characterized. By the incorporation of the DI unit, both polymers show a bathochromically shifted absorption with a deep lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level. The polymer based on thienyl group substituted BDT exhibits an intense absorption in the longer-wavelength region, a deeper lying HOMO energy level, and a higher carrier mobility, all of which contribute to the resulting polymer solar cells with a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.19% and an increased Voc of 0.91 V.

Abstract
Conjugated materials have attracted much attention toward applications in organic electronics in recent years. These organic species offer many advantages as potential replacement for conventional materials (i.e., silicon and metals) in terms of cheap fabrication and environmentally benign devices. While p-type (electron-donating or hole-conducting) materials have been extensively reviewed and researched, their counterpart n-type (electron-accepting or electron-conducting) materials have seen much less popularity despite the greater need for improvement. In addition to developing efficient charge transport materials, it is equally important to provide a means of charge storage, where energy can be used on an on-demand basis. This perspective is focused on discussing a selection of representative n-type materials and the efforts toward improving their charge-transport efficiencies. Additionally, this perspective will also highlight recent organic materials for battery components and the efforts that have been made to improve their environmental appeal.
