Herein, we present
a general electrochemical method to access unsymmetrical
3,3-disubstituted oxindoles by direct C–H functionalization
where the oxindole fragment behaves as an electrophile. This Umpolung
approach does not rely on stoichiometric oxidants and proceeds under
mild, environmentally benign conditions. Importantly, it enables the
functionalization of these scaffolds through C–O, and by extension
to C–C or even C–N bond formation.

Abstract
This article describes our research work for the past decade, which involves the transition-metal-catalyzed cyclization reactions of the C-N multiple bonds containing species and their synthetic applications to access various heterocyclic compounds. The concepts of reactions including four types of coupling with a subsequent cyclization are (1) the transition-metal performs as a Lewis acid to activate a nitrile and accelerate the nucleophilic addition, (2) the transition-metal-catalyzed 1,2-insertion reaction of nitrile, (3) the Cu-catalyzed C-N coupling reaction of imine, and (4) the Co-catalyzed addition/cyclization reaction of imine. These methods can be used to synthesize various N-containing aromatic heterocycles with higher efficiency, and can be applied to the synthesis of relevent natural alkaloids, their derivatives as well as biologically active compounds.

Abstract
Described herein is an environmentally benign method for the synthesis of multisubstituted 3-alkoxylated-2-oxindoles 3 via direct alkoxylation of 3-halooxindoles 1. A wide variety of such multisubstituted 3-alkoxylated-2-oxindole scaffolds were smoothly obtained in good yields (up to 94%) by heating in an oil bath at 35 °C for 24 h. A particularly valuable feature of this method was the development of environment-friendly chemistry using alcohols 2 as both the substrates and solvents in the presence of a catalytic amount of base.

Abstract
The paper provides a comprehensive review of the base-catalysed C3-alkylation of N-unprotected-3-monosubstituted oxindoles. Based on a few, non-systematic studies described in the literature using butyllithium as the deprotonating agent, an optimized method has now been elaborated, via the corresponding lithium salt, for the selective C3-alkylation of this family of compounds. The optimal excess of butyllithium and alkylating agent, and the role of the halogen atom in the latter (alkyl bromides vs. iodides) were also studied. The alkylation protocol has also been extended to some derivatives substituted at the aromatic ring. Finally, various substituents were introduced into the aromatic ring of the N-unprotected 3,3-dialkyloxindoles obtained by this optimized method.

Abstract
A novel procedure for the Cu-catalyzed systematic synthesis of phenanthridinium bromide is reported. This transformation was achieved with direct construction of central pyridinium core by using an in situ formed biaryl imine as a substrate. Tolerance of a very wide variety of N-substituents is indicated; this has never previously been disclosed by other reports. Application of this method to synthesis of the natural alkaloid bicolorine, and its derivatives, was also carried out in only three synthetic steps from commercially available compounds.

Abstract
A novel procedure for hydride-induced anionic cyclization has been developed. It includes the reduction of a biaryl bromo-nitrile with a nucleophilic aromatic substitution (S(N)Ar). A range of polysubstituted 6-H-phenanthridines were so obtained in moderate to good yield with good substrate tolerance. This method involves a concise transition-metal-free process and was applied to synthesize natural alkaloids.

Abstract
A variety of aldehydes undergo smooth coupling with 4-hydroxy-N-methyl-2-methylene-N-phenylbutanamide in the presence of BF3·OEt2 under ambient conditions to produce the corresponding spiro-oxindole derivatives in good yields with excellent selectivity. It is an entirely new strategy to construct the spirocycles in a one-pot operation through a Prins cascade process.

Abstract
(-)-Horsfiline and (-)-coerulescine were synthesized through three one-pot operations in 33 and 46% overall yield, respectively. Key to the success was the efficient use of a diarylprolinol silyl ether to catalyze the asymmetric Michael addition of nitromethane to a 2-oxoindoline-3-ylidene acetaldehyde. This allowed the all-carbon quaternary, spirocyclic carbon stereocenter to be constructed in good yield with excellent enantioselectivity.

Abstract
Cu-catalysed arylation reactions devoted to the formation of C-C and C-heteroatom bonds (Ullmann-type couplings) have acquired great importance in the last decade. This review discusses the history and development of coupling reactions between aryl halides and various classes of nucleophiles, focusing mostly on the different mechanisms proposed through the years. Selected mechanistic investigations are treated more in depth than others. For example, evidence in favour or against radical mechanisms is discussed. Cu(I) and Cu(III) complexes involved in the Ullmann reaction and N/O selectivity in aminoalcohol arylation are discussed. A separate section has been dedicated to the synthesis of heterocyclic rings through intramolecular couplings. Finally, recent developments in green chemistry for these reactions, such as reactions in aqueous media and heterogeneous catalysis, have also been reviewed.

Abstract
An aza-Michael induced ring closure (aza-MIRC) tandem reaction of benzyl (2-bromoethyl)carbamate with various Michael acceptors is described. The N-Cbz-β-gem-disubstituted pyrrolidines thus obtained were proved to be versatile intermediates for the rapid access to both martinelline and spirooxindole backbones. An application of this strategy towards an expedient 4 step total synthesis of (±)-coerulescine is also presented.
