Abstract
A photochrmic triangle terthiophene dye with 2,4-dimethylthiazole attached was synthesized and shows regular photochromic properties when irradiated with UV/Vis light alternately. It was found that the attaching of 2,4-dimethylthiazole has a significant effect on both the photochromism and fluorescence of triangle terthiophene. During the photocyclizatioin prcess, not only the color but also the fluorescence of the dye in THF can be toggled between ring-open and ring-closed forms of the dye. Additionally, the absolute quantum yields (AQY) of ring-open and ring-closed forms of the dye (0.32/0.58) were greatly larger than the literature report. Along with the 254 nm light irradiation, the fluorescence color changed from deep blue (428 nm) to sky blue (486 nm) in THF. A fluorochromism cycle could be established based on the UV/visible light irradiation cycle, which provides a strategy for the design of new type fluorescent diarylethene derivatives for biological application.

Abstract
Depositing minute light emitters into a regular array is a basic but essential technique in display technology. However, conventional lithographic methodologies involve multistep and energy-consuming processes. Here, we develop a facile method in which organic and polymeric fluorescent dyes spontaneously aggregate to form a patterned microarray. We find that a thin film of fluorescent π-conjugated polymer transforms into micrometer-sized aggregates when exposed to binary organic vapor at ambient temperature. The arrayed microaggregates can be formed over the whole substrate surface when using a quartz substrate that is prepatterned with regular hydrophilic boxes and hydrophobic grids. The resultant microarray is applicable to optical memories and displays when photoswitchable fluorophores are doped into the polymer matrix.

Abstract
Photocyclization, irrespective of whether multiple steps (e.g., Norrish-Yang cyclization) or a single concerted step (e.g., 6π photocyclization) are involved, is an intramolecular photochemical process resulting in the formation of one new single bond to afford a ring system. In particular, visible-light-induced photocyclization offers a green and sustainable route to organic cyclic compounds that are difficult to access by thermal reactions. Herein, we describe the ambient light-induced intramolecular photocyclization of a series of donor/acceptor chromophores 1 d-3 d containing two types of photoresponsive motifs, namely an electron-deficient BF2 -chelated ketone fused with an electron-rich thiophene, and probe the solution-phase and solid-state photochromic performance of these compounds. The results reveal that simple variation of R substituents on the diaryl moiety allows one to control the intramolecular photocyclization mechanism with high photochemical selectivity, e.g., under ambient light, methyl-substituted 1 d and 2 d undergo reversible 6π photocyclization, whereas ethyl-substituted 3 d exclusively undergoes irreversible Norrish-Yang photocyclization. Single-crystal X-ray analysis of Norrish-Yang cyclization products reveals the formation of four pairs of conformational enantiomers differing in the dihedral angle between benzothiophene and the BF2 core, namely (±)N-3 d@68°, (±)N-3 d@-77°, (±)N-3 d@-78°, and (±)N-3 d@-102°. The UV/Vis absorption spectra of 1 d-3 d cover a broad visible-light region (380-572 nm), while DFT and TD-DFT calculations reveal that absorption in this region is dominated by the charge-transfer (CT) transition from the thiophene-centered HOMO to the LUMO of the electron-deficient π-conjugated BF2 -chelated unit and the n→π* and π→π* transitions within the latter unit. The spatial separation of the HOMO and LUMO of these dyes promotes triplet-state generation and self-photosensitizes intramolecular photocyclization in the visible-light region. Three-dimensional time-resolved and steady-state emission spectra of 3 d show that the Norrish-Yang photocyclization takes place within milliseconds with excellent conversion efficiency (96 %).

Abstract
Diarylethene derivatives having benzothiophene S,S-dioxide groups undergo turn-on mode fluorescence photoswitching. For the practical application to super-resolution fluorescence microscopy, photoswitchable fluorescent molecules are desired to be resistant against photodegradation. Here we synthesized turn-on mode fluorescent diarylethenes having electron-withdrawing (trifluoromethyl or nitro) or electron-donating (methyl, methoxy, or dimethylamino) substituents on phenyl rings at 6- and 6'-positions of the benzothiophene S,S-dioxide groups and examined the effect of the substituents on the photoswitchiing performance. The derivatives having electron-donating substituents showed significant bathochromic shifts of the absorption and fluorescence spectra. The cycloreversion quantum yield was increased by introducing electron-withdrawing substituents, while it was decreased by the electron-donating ones. Introduction of electron-donating substituents was found to remarkably improve the fatigue resistance of the fluorescent diarylethene under continuous ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Such highly fatigue-resistant fluorescent diarylethenes are useful for super-resolution fluorescence imaging or single-molecule fluorescence tracking.

Abstract
A novel turn-on mode fluorescent diarylethene containing a 4,6-dimethylpyrimidine unit was developed to fluorescently sense Zn2+. Its multiple-responsive properties induced by Zn2+/EDTA and ultraviolet/visible light have been systematically studied. The fluorescence sensor could efficiently detect Zn2+ with a 10 times enhancement of emission intensity and fluorescence color change (dark-green). In addition, the sensor showed clear discrimination from Cd2+. The limit of detection of the sensor was measured to be 8.48 × 10-8 mol L-1 for Zn2+. Finally, a molecular logic circuit was fabricated with the emission at 528 nm as the output signal and light and chemical stimuli as input signals.

Abstract
Controlling the intensity and manipulating the spectral composition of sunlight are critical for many devices including "smart" windows, greenhouses, and photomicroreactors, but these are also important in more decorative applications. Here, we use a diarylethene dye incorporated in a liquid crystal host to create a dual-responsive "smart" window regulated both by an electrical trigger and by specific wavelengths of light. By incorporating the same diarylethene dye in a polymerizable host and using inkjet printing, coatings can be made with complete freedom in the applied pattern design, although the electrical response is lost. The color change of the diarylethene dye can be controlled in simulated sunlight by concurrent light exposure from an LED source, allowing a manual override for outdoor use. Photoluminescence of the closed isomer of the diarylethene from the light guide edges could be used for lighting or electricity generation in a luminescent solar concentrator architecture.

Abstract
Diarylethene molecules showing photochromism and fluorescence properties in both open and closed forms, associated with two different emission colors, are very promising for applications involving ratiometric emissive photoswitches. We report here a complete study on the competition between the multiple photophysical processes involved in the excited states for two sulfone derivatives of benzothiophene-based diarylethene molecules, only differing by the substituent groups on their reactive carbon (methyl for DAE-Me and ethyl for DAE-Et). Steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy, combined with DFT and TD-DFT calculations, allow a complete determination of the kinetic constants leading to fluorescence and photoreaction pathways in different solvents, and enlighten the specific role of the substituent group in the photophysical properties due to a shielding effect against the solvation environment. The predominant role of the non-radiative deactivation processes in such a family of molecules is shown, and a tentative excited state mechanistic scheme is proposed based on femtosecond transient absorption experiments performed on the closed forms.

Abstract
Photoswitching and fluorescent properties of sulfone derivatives of 1,2-bis(2-alkyl-4-methyl-5-phenyl-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene, 1–5, having methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, i-propyl, and i-butyl substituents at the reactive carbons (2- and 2′-positions) of the thiophene 1,1-dioxide rings were studied. Diarylethenes 1–5 underwent isomerization reactions between open-ring and closed-ring forms upon alternate irradiation with ultraviolet (UV) and visible light and showed fluorescence in the closed-ring forms. The alkyl substitution at the reactive carbons affects the fluorescent property of the closed-ring isomers. The closed-ring isomers 2b–5b with ethyl, n-propyl, i-propyl, and i-butyl substituents show higher fluorescence quantum yields than 1b with methyl substituents. In polar solvents, the fluorescence quantum yield of 1b markedly decreases, while 2b–5b maintain the relatively high fluorescence quantum yields. Although the cycloreversion quantum yields of the derivatives with methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, and i-propyl substituents are quite low and in the order of 10−5, introduction of i-butyl substituents was found to increase the yield up to the order of 10−3. These results indicate that appropriate alkyl substitution at the reactive carbons is indispensable for properly controlling the photoswitching and fluorescent properties of the photoswitchable fluorescent diarylethenes, which are potentially applicable to super-resolution fluorescence microscopies.

Abstract
A modular assembly of water-soluble diarylethenes (DAEs), applicable as biomarkers for optical nanoscopy, is reported. Reversibly photoswitchable 1,2-bis(2-alkyl-6-phenyl-1-benzothiophene-1,1-dioxide-3-yl)perfluorocyclopentenes possessing a fluorescent "closed" form were decorated with one or two methoxy group(s) attached to the para-position(s) of phenyl ring(s) and two, four, or eight carboxylic acid groups. Antibody conjugates of these DAEs feature low aggregation, efficient photoswitching in aqueous buffers, specific staining of cellular structures, and photophysical properties (high emission efficiencies and low cycloreversion quantum yields) enabling their application in superresolution microscopy. Images of tubulin, vimentin, and nuclear pore complexes are presented. The superresolution images can also be acquired by using solely 488 nm light without additional photoactivation with UV light. These DAEs exhibit reversible photoswitching without requiring any additives to the imaging media and open new paths toward the modular design of fluorescent dyes for bioimaging with optical superresolution.

Abstract
Reversibly photoswitchable 1,2‐bis(2‐ethyl‐6‐phenyl‐1‐benzothiophene‐1,1‐dioxide‐3‐yl)perfluorocyclopentenes (EBT) having fluorescent “closed” forms were decorated with four or eight carboxylic groups and attached to antibodies. Low aggregation, efficient photoswitching in aqueous buffers, specific staining of cellular structures, and good photophysical properties were demonstrated. Alternating light pulses of UV and blue light induce numerous reversible photochemical transformations between two stables states with distinct structures. Using relatively low light intensities, EBTs were applied in biology‐related super‐resolution microscopy based on the reversible saturable (switchable) optical linear fluorescence transitions (RESOLFT) and demonstrated optical resolution of 75 nm.

Abstract
This contribution is an investigation of both the structures and optical properties of a set of 14 diverse, recently synthesized diarylethenes using Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) at the ωB97X-D/6-31G(d) level of theory. The linear response (LR) and state-specific (SS) versions of the Polarizable Continuum Model (PCM) have been adopted to account for the bulk solvation effects and their relative performances were critically accessed. It is shown, for the first time in the case of nontrivial diarylethenes, that TD-DFT provides good agreement between the experimental absorption-fluorescence crossing points (AFCPs) and their theoretical counterparts when a robust model accounting for both geometrical relaxation and vibrational corrections is used instead of the vertical approximation. On the other hand, the theoretical estimates for the Stokes shifts based on the vertical transition energies were found to be in disagreement with respect to experiment, prompting us to simulate the absorption/emission vibronic band shapes. It is proved that difficulties associated with the breakdown of the harmonic approximation in Cartesian coordinates exist for the investigated system, and we show how they can be at least partially overcome by means of a vertical approach including Duschinsky effects. Our results provide a valuable basis to rationalize the experimental vibronic structure of both emission and absorption bands and are expected to be a significant asset to the understanding of the optical properties of diarylethene derivatives.

Abstract
AbstractA new family of thermally irreversible photochromic molecules, named “diarylethene,” was serendipitously discovered a quarter of a century ago. The diarylethenes undergo thermally irreversible, fatigue resistant, ultrafast and highly sensitive photochromic reactions. Many of diarylethenes can undergo photochromic reactions even in the single-crystalline phase. The outstanding photochromic performance attracts considerable attention from both scientific and technological points of view, and stimulates research from fundamental physico-chemical aspects to various applications. Here, it is reported how such thermally irreversible photochromic diarylethenes were discovered and developed.

Abstract
Photoswitchable fluorescent diheteroarylethenes are promising candidates for applications in super-resolution molecular localization fluorescence microscopy thanks to their high quantum yields and fatigue-resistant photoswitching characteristics. We have studied the effect of varying substituents on the photophysical properties of six sulfone derivatives of diheteroarylethenes, which display fluorescence in one (closed form) of two thermally stable photochromic states. Electron-donating substituents displace the absorption and emission spectra towards the red without substantially affecting the fluorescence quantum yields. Furthermore, ethoxybromo, a very electron-donating substituent, stabilizes the excited state of the closed isomer to the extent of almost entirely inhibiting its cycloreversion. Multi-parameter Hammett correlations indicate a relationship between the emission maxima and electron-donating character, providing a useful tool in the design of future photochromic molecules. Most of the synthesized compounds exhibit small bathochromic shifts and shorter fluorescence lifetimes with an increase in solvent polarity. However, the ethoxybromo-substituted fluorescent photochrome is unique in its strong solvatochromic behaviour, constituting a photoactivatable (photochromic), fluorescent and highly solvatochromic small organic compound. The Catalán formalism identified solvent dipolarity as the principal basis of the solvatochromism, reflecting the highly polarized nature of this molecule.

Abstract
Oxidized triangle terarylenes with asymmetric side-aryl units are synthesized, which show photo-induced turn-on yellow luminescence based on photochemical intramolecular ring-cyclization reaction in the solid state. A direct photo-patterning process for organic electroluminescent devices is successfully demonstrated with selective light irradiation through an appropriate mask-pattern.
