Abstract
Imide functionalization is one of the most effective approaches to develop electron-deficient building blocks for constructing n-type organic semiconductors. Driven by the attractive properties of imide-functionalized dithienylbenzodiimide (TBDI) and the promising device performance of TBDI-based polymers, a novel acceptor with increased electron affinity, fluorinated dithienylbenzodiimide (TFBDI), was designed with the hydrogen replaced by fluorine on the benzene core, and the synthetic challenges associated with this highly electron-deficient fluorinated imide building block are successfully overcome. TFBDI showed suppressed frontier molecular orbital energy levels as compared with TBDI. Copolymerizing this new electron-withdrawing TBDI with various donor co-units afforded a series of n-type polymer semiconductors TFBDI-T, TFBDI-Se, and TFBDI-BSe. All these TFBDI-based polymers exhibited a lower-lying lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level than the polymer analogue without fluorine. When applied in organic thin-film transistors, three polymers showed unipolar electron transport with large on-current/off-current ratios (Ion/Ioff) of 105-107. Among them, the selenophene-based polymer TFBDI-Se with the deepest-positioned LUMO and optimal chain stacking exhibited the highest electron mobility of 0.30 cm2 V-1 s-1. This result demonstrates that the new TFBDI is a highly attractive electron-deficient unit for enabling n-type polymer semiconductors, and the fluorination of imide-functionalized arenes offers an effective approach to develop more electron-deficient building blocks in organic electronics.

Abstract
A blade-coating process was employed to fabricate bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) polymer solar cells based on a ladder-type polymer (PIDT-PhanQ) with low crystallinity. Compared to the devices processed by a conventional spin-coating method, an intriguing morphology with enhanced phase-separation and increased crystallinity was achieved. As a result, power conversion efficiency up to 7.25% could be achieved from the blade-coated PIDT-PhanQ:PC71BM BHJ film, surpassing the original value obtained by spin-coating (6.29%). This improved photovoltaic performance is attributed to the improved charge carrier mobilities, which correlates well with the increased crystallinity and the organized network of the donor-acceptor phases that produce efficient charge-transporting pathways.

Abstract
The introduction of fluorine (F) atoms onto conjugated polymer backbone has verified to be an effective way to enhance the overall performance of polymer-based bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells, but the underlying working principles are not yet fully uncovered. As our attempt to further understand the impact of F, herein we have reported two novel fluorinated analogues of PCDTBT, namely, PCDTFBT (1F) and PCDT2FBT (2F), through inclusion of either one or two F atoms into the benzothiadiazole (BT) unit of the polymer backbone and the characterization of their physical properties, especially their performance in solar cells. Together with a profound effect of fluorination on the optical property, nature of charge transport, and molecular organization, F atoms are effective in lowering both the HOMO and LUMO levels of the polymers without a large change in the energy bandgaps. PCDTFBT-based BHJ solar cell shows a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.96 % with high open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.95 V, mainly due to the deep HOMO level (-5.54 eV). To the best of our knowledge, the resulting VOC is comparable to the record VOC values in single junction devices. Furthermore, to our delight, the best PCDTFBT-based device, prepared using 2 % v/v diphenyl ether (DPE) additive, reaches the PCE of 4.29 %. On the other hand, doubly-fluorinated polymer PCDT2FBT shows the only moderate PCE of 2.07 % with a decrease in VOC (0.88 V), in spite of the further lowering of the HOMO level (-5.67 eV) with raising the number of F atoms. Thus, our results highlight that an improvement in efficiency by tuning the energy levels of the polymers by means of molecular design can be expected only if their truly optimized morphologies with fullerene in BHJ systems are materialized.

Abstract
The synthesis and physicochemical properties of a new class of BODIPY-based donor-acceptor π-conjugated polymers are presented. Solution-processed top-gate/bottom-contact (TG-BC) thin-film transistors on flexible plastic substrates exhibit air-stable p-channel activities with charge carrier mobilities as high as 0.17 cm(2) /V·s and current on/off ratios of 10(5) -10(6) , the highest reported to date for a BODIPY-based semiconductor. The results shown here indicate a significant charge-transport improvement (>10000×) in BODIPY-based polymeric semiconductors, demonstrating its potential in future organic optoelectronic applications.

Abstract
A solution-processed diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based small molecule, namely BDT-DPP, with broad absorption and suitable energy levels has been synthesized. The widely used solvents of chloroform (CF) and o-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) were used as the spin-coating solvent, respectively, and 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) was used as additive to fabricate efficient photovoltaic devices with BDT-DPP as the donor material and PC71BM as the acceptor material. Devices fabricated from CF exhibit poor fill factor (FF) of 43%, low short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 6.86 mA/cm(2), and moderate power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.4%, due to rapid evaporation of CF, leading to poor morphology of the active layer. When 0.3% DIO was added, the FF and Jsc were improved to 60% and 8.49 mA/cm(2), respectively, because of the better film morphology. Active layer spin-coated from the high-boiling-point solvent of o-DCB shows better phase separation than that from CF, because of the slow drying nature of o-DCB, offering sufficient time for the self-organization of active-layer. Finally, using o-DCB as the parent solvent and 0.7% DIO as the cosolvent, we obtained optimized devices with continuous interpenetrating network films, affording a Jsc of 11.86 mA/cm(2), an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.72 V, an FF of 62%, and a PCE of 5.29%. This PCE is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest efficiency reported to date for devices prepared from the solution-processed DPP-based small molecules.
