Abstract
The continuous decline of traditional fossil energy has cast the shadow of an energy crisis on human society. Hydrogen generated from renewable energy sources is considered as a promising energy carrier, which can effectively promote the energy transformation of traditional high-carbon fossil energy to low-carbon clean energy. Hydrogen storage technology plays a key role in realizing the application of hydrogen energy and liquid organic hydrogen carrier technology, with many advantages such as storing hydrogen efficiently and reversibly. High-performance and low-cost catalysts are the key to the large-scale application of liquid organic hydrogen carrier technology. In the past few decades, the catalyst field of organic liquid hydrogen carriers has continued to develop and has achieved some breakthroughs. In this review, we summarized recent significant progress in this field and discussed the optimization strategies of catalyst performance, including the properties of support and active metals, metal-support interaction and the combination and proportion of multi-metals. Moreover, the catalytic mechanism and future development direction were also discussed.

Abstract
Recent developments in the transformation of biobased 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into a potential liquid fuel, 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), are summarised. This review focuses briefly on the history of HMF conversion to DMF in terms of the feedstock used and emphasises the ideal requirements in terms of the catalytic properties needed in HMF transformation into DMF. The recent state of the art and works on HMF transformation into DMF are discussed in comparison to noble metals and non-noble metals as well as bimetallic catalysts. The effect of the support used and the reaction conditions are also discussed. The recommendations for future work and challenges faced are specified.

Abstract
The ultra-deep adsorptive desulfurization (ppb level) of benzene remains a challenging subject with the need to construct efficient adsorbent systems. Herein, a kind of ruthenium-based adsorbent functionalized with bimetallic Ru-Al was rationally designed using Al2O3 as support (denoted as 0.8%Ru-1.2%Al/Al2O3). It was found that the co-anchoring of Ru and Al species endows the Ru-based adsorbent unique adsorption capability, which is able to completely eliminate sulfur compounds in benzene, and exhibiting a much higher breakthrough sulfur capacity than that of the 0.8%Ru/Al2O3. Remarkably, under the industrial experiment conditions, 0.8%Ru-1.2%Al/Al2O3 exhibited excellent long-term stability for more than 1200 h, showing the potential for industrial application. Various characterization techniques, including BET, XRD, SEM, TEM, TPD-MS, TPR and XPS, were used to investigate the correlation between the adsorption performance and the microstructure of the adsorbents. Over 0.8%Ru-1.2%Al/Al2O3, the ultra-thin aluminum additive is beneficial to improve the dispersion of Ru species, which therefore exhibits desirable desulfurization efficiency. Moreover, the enhanced performance is also correlated to the presence of the suitable Ru active centers generated from the selective coverage by Al species. It leads to an optimal exposure of the Ru active centers, which would facilitate the interaction of S-Ru and the improvement of the desulfurization activity.

Ruthenium Catalysts Templated on Mesoporous MCM-41 Type Silica and Natural Clay Nanotubes for Hydrogenation of Benzene to Cyclohexane. Catalysts 2020. [DOI: 10.3390/catal10050537] [Citation(s) in RCA: 23] [Impact Index Per Article: 4.6] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 01/14/2023] Open
Abstract
Mesoporous ruthenium catalysts (0.74–3.06 wt%) based on ordered Mobil Composition of Matter No. 41 (MCM-41) silica arrays on aluminosilicate halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), as well as HNT-based counterparts, were synthesized and tested in benzene hydrogenation. The structure of HNT core-shell silica composite-supported Ru catalysts were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR-H2). The textural characteristics were specified by low-temperature nitrogen adsorption/desorption. The catalytic evaluation of Ru nanoparticles supported on both the pristine HNTs and MCM-41/HNT composite in benzene hydrogenation was carried out in a Parr multiple reactor system with batch stirred reactors (autoclaves) at 80 °C, a hydrogen pressure of 3.0 MPa and a hydrogen/benzene molar ratio of 3.3. Due to its hierarchical structure and high specific surface area, the MCM-41/HNT composite provided the uniform distribution and stabilization of Ru nanoparticles (NPs) resulted in the higher specific activity and stability as compared with the HNT-based counterpart. The highest specific activity (5594 h−1) along with deep benzene hydrogenation to cyclohexane was achieved for the Ru/MCM-41/HNT catalyst with a low metal content.

Abstract
The design of an ideal heterogeneous catalyst for hydrogenation reaction is to impart the catalyst with synergetic surface sites active cooperatively toward different reaction species. Herein a new strategy is presented for the creation of such a catalyst with dual active sites by decorating metal and metal oxide nanoparticles with ultrafine nanoclusters at atomic level. This strategy is exemplified by the design and synthesis of Ru nanoclusters supported on Ni/NiO nanoparticles. This Ru-nanocluster/Ni/NiO-nanoparticle catalyst is shown to exhibit ultrahigh catalytic activity for benzene hydrogenation reaction, which is 55 times higher than Ru-Ni alloy or Ru on Ni catalysts. The nanoclusters-on-nanoparticles are characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscope, Cs-corrected high angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy, elemental mapping, high-sensitivity low-energy ion scattering, and X-ray absorption spectra. The atomic-scale nanocluster-nanoparticle structural characteristics constitute the basis for creating the catalytic synergy of the surface sites, where Ru provides hydrogen adsorption and dissociation site, Ni acts as a "bridge" for transferring H species to benzene adsorbed and activated at NiO site, which has significant implications to multifunctional nanocatalysts design for wide ranges of catalytic reactions.
