Pd-Catalyzed Miyaura Borylation and Telescopic Borylation/Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-Coupling Processes in Deep-Eutectic Solvents

We report an efficient procedure to carry out palladium-catalyzed Miyaura borylation reactions of (hetero)aromatic halides and triflates in choline chloride (ChCl)-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs). The procedure employs bis(pinacolato)diboron as a boron source and a catalyst prepared in situ from readily available Pd2(dba)3 and the phosphine ligand XPhos. Reactions proceed well in different ChCl-based DESs, among which the best results were provided by environmentally friendly and biodegradable mixtures with glycerol and glucose. The reaction tolerates both EDG and EWG substituents on the substrates and can be run on different halides (chloride, bromide, iodide) and pseudohalides (triflate). Furthermore, for several substrates, the catalyst loading can be reduced to 1 mol % Pd (0.5% mol Pd2(dba)3) without compromising the reaction yield. Moreover, we show that the Miyaura borylation protocol in DES can be combined with a subsequent Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction in a one-pot procedure, allowing access to various biaryl products and demonstrating its synthetic utility by preparing the precursors of two compounds with reported applications in the photovoltaics sector. Finally, two green metrics (E-factor and EcoScale) of the new one-pot procedure in DES were calculated and compared with literature values to assess the potential advantages in terms of waste reduction, safety, and energy consumption.

Electropolymerizable IrIII Complexes with β-Ketoiminate Ancillary Ligands

A series of electropolymerizable cyclometallated Ir^III complexes were synthesized and their electrochemical and photophysical properties studied. The triphenylamine electropolymerizable fragment was introduced by using triphenylamine-2-phenylpyridine and, respectively, triphenylamine-benzothiazole as cyclometalated ligands. The coordination sphere was completed by two differently substituted β-ketoiminate ligands deriving from the condensation of acetylacetone or hexafluoroacetylacetone with para-bromoaniline. The influence of the -CH₃ /-CF₃ substitution to the electrochemical and photophysical properties was investigated. Both complexes with CH₃ substituted β-ketoiminate were emissive in solution and in solid state. Highly stable films were electrodeposited onto ITO coated glass substrates. Their emission was quenched by electron trapping within the polymeric network as proven by electrochemical studies. The -CF₃ substitution of the β-ketoiminate leads instead to the quenching of the emission and inhibits electropolymerization.

Synthesis of 8-Aryl-O-methylcyanidins and Their Usage for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Devices

Anthocyanins as natural pigments are colorful and environmentally compatible dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). To increase the efficiency, we designed and synthesized unnatural O-methylflavonols and O-methylcyanidins that possess an aryl group at the 8-position. We synthesized per-O-methylquercetin from quercetin, then using selective demethylation prepared various O-methylquercetins. Using the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction, 8-arylation of per-O-methylquercetin was achieved. Using a LiAlH₄ reduction or Clemmensen reduction, these flavonols were transformed to the corresponding cyanidin derivatives in satisfactory yields. Using these dyes, we fabricated DSSCs, and their efficiency was investigated. The efficiency of tetra-O-methylflavonol was 0.31%. However, the introduction of the 8-aryl residue increased the efficiency to 1.04%. In comparison to these flavonols, O-methylcyanidins exhibited a lower efficiency of 0.05% to 0.52%. The introduction of the 8-aryl group into the cyanidin derivatives did not result in a remarkable increase in the efficiency. These phenomena may be due to the poor fit of the HOMO-LUMO level of the dyes to the TiO₂ conduction band.

Recent developments in the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction: 2010-2014

The Suzuki-Miyaura reaction (SMR), involving the coupling of an organoboron reagent and an organic halide or pseudo-halide in the presence of a palladium or nickel catalyst and a base, has arguably become one of most utilized tools for the construction of a C-C bond. This review intends to be general account of all types of catalytic systems, new coupling partners and applications, including the literature between September 2010 and December 2014.
