Foldamer-Based Mechanoresponsive Materials: Molecular Nanoarchitectonics to Advanced Functions

Artificial molecules that respond to external stimuli such as light, heat, chemical signals, and mechanical force have garnered significant interest due to their tunable functions, variable optical properties, and mechanical responses. Particularly, mechanoresponsive materials featuring molecules that respond to mechanical stress or show force-induced optical changes have been intriguing due to their extraordinary functions. Despite the promising potential of many such materials reported in the past, practical applications have remained limited, primarily because their functions often depend on irreversible covalent bond rupture. Foldamers, oligomers that fold into well-defined secondary structures, offer an alternative class of mechanoactive motifs. These molecules can reversibly sustain mechanical stress and efficiently dissipate energy by transitioning between folded and unfolded states. This review focuses on the emerging properties of foldamer-based mechanoresponsive materials. We begin by highlighting the mechanical responses of foldamers in their molecular form, which have been primarily investigated using single-molecule force spectroscopy and other analytical methods. Following this, we provide a detailed survey of the current trends in foldamer-appended polymers, emphasizing their emerging mechanical and mechanochromic properties. Subsequently, we present an overview of the state-of-the-art advancements in foldamer-appended polymers, showcasing significant reports in this field. This review covers some of the most recent advances in this direction and draws a perspective for further development.

A Foldaxane-based Supramolecular Muscle-Like Switch

[cn]daisy chain molecular muscle architectures are self-assemblies of hermaphrodite monomers, which usually contain a macrocycle unit linked to a molecular thread that contains sites of interactions - i. e. molecular stations - for the macrocycle. In these multiply threaded structures, altering with control the affinity between macrocycles and stations allows for contraction and extension of the molecule, which is reminiscent of the operation of a muscle. Besides, the field that consists of combining helix and template-containing rods to design foldaxane supramolecular assemblies is still underexplored. By using foldamer units as surrogates for macrocycles, Gan et al. reported the first supramolecular muscle-like foldamer-containing switch that can adopt, after chemical stimulus, either a contracted co-conformational state or a degenerate-like state for which a slow exchange occurred between the contracted and the stretched state.

Foldaxane-Based Switchable [c2]Daisy Chains

Artificial molecular muscles are highly attractive in the field of molecular machinery due to their unique properties of contraction and stretching motion. However, the synthesis of molecular muscles poses formidable challenges as it is hindered by undesirable yields and poor selectivity. Herein, we present a procedure for the dynamic assembly of foldaxane-based [c2]daisy chains, wherein the hermaphroditic sequences consisting of aromatic helices and peptide rods are interlocked through inter-strand hydrogen-bonding interactions. The binding complementarity facilitates a selective and efficient assembly of [c2]daisy chain structures, inhibiting the creation of by-products. Introducing multiple recognition sites confers the system with contraction and stretching motion actuated by chemical stimuli. The rate of this muscle-like motion is calculated to be 0.8 s-1, which is 107 times faster than that of complex dissociation.

BP23C7: high-yield synthesis and application in constructing [3]rotaxanes and responsive pseudo[2]rotaxanes

A biphenyl-23-crown-7 ether (BP23C7) is synthesized in 86% yield from commercially available starting materials. BP23C7 forms pseudo[2]rotaxane with a dibenzylammonium ion (DBA+), exhibiting a good association constant value (ka = 1 × 103 M-1). Subsequently, fluorophoric properties of BP23C7 and anthracene terminated axles are blended to create responsive pseudo[2]rotaxanes. The "turn-on" fluorescence response of BP23C7 due to the addition of fluoride and chloride anions to pseudo[2]rotaxane systems has been investigated. Concomitant fluorescence quenching of the anthracene moiety of corresponding axles due to ion-pair formation has been addressed. Furthermore, two variants of [23]crown ethers, i.e. BP23C7 and o-xylene-23-crown-7 ether (X23C7), are applied for constructing homo[3]rotaxane architectures. A half-axle comprising of DBA+ moiety and a terminal olefin is mixed separately with two [23]crown ethers and subjected to self-metathesis using Grubbs' first-generation catalyst.

Stereoselective Single Step Cyclization to Give Belt-Functionalized Pillar[6]arenes

Two macrocycles were synthesized through cyclization reactions of secondary benzylic alcohols, giving pillar[6]arenes with a methyl substituent at each belt position. These macrocycles form stereoselectively with only the rtctct isomer with alternating up and down orientations of the belt methyl groups definitively identified. Isolated yields were modest (7 and 9%), but the macrocycles are prepared in a single step from either a commercially available alcohol or a very readily prepared precursor. X-ray crystal structures of the macrocycles indicate they have a capsule-like structure, which is far from the conventional pillar shape. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the energy barrier required to obtain the pillar conformation is significantly higher for these belt-functionalized macrocycles than for conventional belt-unfunctionalized pillar[6]arenes.

Pillar[5]arene-Based Fluorescent Supramolecular Polymers Without Conventional Chromophores

Fluorescent supramolecular polymers have garnered significant attention due to their successful integration of supramolecular polymers and fluorescence, offering vast potential for applications in sensing, imaging, optoelectronics, and photonics. In this study, we present a novel supramolecular polymer based on P5-OH, derived from mono-substituted pillararene macrocycles. Notably, these formed supramolecular polymeric aggregates exhibit a prominent blue emission, representing a rare instance of fluorescent polymers devoid of conventional chromophores. Furthermore, through the modification of alkyl chain ending groups attached to pillar[5]arenes, slight shifts in the emission peak could be observed. This research expands the scope of functional supramolecular polymeric systems utilizing pillararenes, providing valuable insights for the design of innovative luminescent materials and optical devices.

Insights into the Correlation of Microscopic Motions of [c2]Daisy Chains with Macroscopic Mechanical Performance for Mechanically Interlocked Networks

Mimicking filament sliding in sarcomeres using artificial molecular muscles such as [c2]daisy chains has aroused increasing interest in developing advanced polymeric materials. Although few bistable [c2]daisy chain-based mechanically interlocked polymers (MIPs) with stimuli-responsive behaviors have been constructed, it remains a significant challenge to establish the relationship between microscopic responsiveness of [c2]daisy chains and macroscopic mechanical properties of the corresponding MIPs. Herein, we report two mechanically interlocked networks (MINs) consisting of dense [c2]daisy chains with individual extension (MIN-1) or contraction (MIN-2) conformations decoupled from a bistable precursor, which serve as model systems to address the challenge. Upon external force, the extended [c2]daisy chains in MIN-1 mainly undergo elastic deformation, which is able to assure the strength, elasticity, and creep resistance of the corresponding material. For the contracted [c2]daisy chains, long-range sliding motion occurs along with the release of latent alkyl chains between the two DB24C8 wheels, and accumulating lots of such microscopic motions endows MIN-2 with enhanced ductility and ability of energy dissipation. Therefore, by decoupling a bistable [c2]daisy chain into individual extended and contracted ones, we directly correlate the microscopic motion of [c2]daisy chains with macroscopic mechanical properties of MINs.

Supramolecular Room Temperature Phosphorescent Materials Based on Cucurbit[8]uril for Dual Detection of Dodine

In recent years, host-guest interactions of macrocycles have attracted much attention as an emerging method for enhancing the intersystem crossing of pure organic room-temperature phosphorescence. In this work, we utilize cucurbit[8]uril (Q[8]) to specifically recognize synthetic bromophenyl pyridine derivatives (BPCOOH) to construct a highly stable charge-transfer dimer, where the bromophenyl pyridine moiety of BPCOOH is encapsulated by Q[8] in a 1:2 host/guest ratio. The assemblies exhibit specific recognition and detection properties for dodine on both fluorescence and phosphorescence spectra. Subsequently, the solid films were prepared by introducing carboxymethylcellulose sodium into the assemblies, which greatly enhanced its RTP performance by increasing the noncovalent bonding interactions, enabling the visualization of high-strength RTP and quantitative testing of the solid state. Finally, this material was used for the application of portable indicator papers to achieve rapid and visualized detection of dodine in daily life, which provides more possibilities for the potential applications of cucurbit[n]uril-based room-temperature phosphorescence material.

Solvent effects on the motion of a crown ether/amino rotaxane

Solvents have been recognized as a significant factor for modulating the shuttle of rotaxanes and regulating their functions regarding molecular machines by a lot of published studies. The mechanism of the effects of solvents on the motion of crown ether/amino rotaxanes, however, remains unclear. In this work, a rotaxane, formed by dibenzo-24-crown-8 (C[8]) and a dumbbell-shaped axle with two positively charged amino groups, was investigated at the atom level. Two-dimensional free-energy landscapes characterizing the conformational change of C[8] and the shuttling motions in chloroform and water were mapped. The results indicated that the barriers in water were evidently lower than those in chloroform. By analyzing the trajectories, there was no obvious steric effect during shuttling. Instead, the main driving force of shuttling was verified from electrostatic interactions, especially strong hydrogen bonding interactions between the axle and water, which resulted in the fast shuttling rate of the rotaxane. All in all, the polarity and hydrogen bond-forming ability of solvents are the main factors in affecting the shuttling rate of a crown ether/amino rotaxane. In addition, C[8] would adopt S-shaped conformations during shuttling except for situating in the amino sites with C-shaped ones adopted due to π-π stacking interactions. The results of this research improve the comprehension of the solvent modulation ability for shuttling in crown ether-based rotaxanes and illustrate the effects of structural modifications on motions. These new insights are expected to serve the efficient design and construction of molecular machines.

Noncovalently bound and mechanically interlocked systems using pillar[n]arenes

Pillar[n]arenes are pillar-shaped macrocyclic compounds owing to the methylene bridges linking the para-positions of the units. Owing to their unique pillar-shaped structures, these compounds exhibit various excellent properties compared with other cyclic host molecules, such as versatile functionality using various organic synthesis techniques, substituent-dependent solubility, cavity-size-dependent host-guest properties in organic media, and unit rotation along with planar chiral inversion. These advantages have enabled the high-yield synthesis and rational design of pillar[n]arene-based mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs). In particular, new types of pillar[n]arene-based MIMs that can dynamically convert between interlocked and unlocked states through unit rotation have been produced. The highly symmetrical pillar-shaped structures of pillar[n]arenes result in simple NMR spectra, which are useful for studying the motion of pillar[n]arene wheels in MIMs and creating sophisticated MIMs with higher-order structures. The creation and application of polymeric MIMs based on pillar[n]arenes is also discussed.

Construction of a pillararene-based supramolecular polymer network and its application in efficient removal of dyes from water

An AB-type monomer based on a pillar[5]arene host and an imidazolium salt guest was successfully synthesized through a facile way. This monomer can self-assemble into linear supramolecular polymers in chloroform. After the addition of silver ions, the imidazolium salt group coordinated with silver ions to crosslink the linear supramolecular polymers at their ends, resulting in the formation of supramolecular polymer networks. Meanwhile, after further adding iodide ions, the supramolecular polymer network changed back to the linear supramolecular polymer. As a result, the topological structure of the system can be reversibly tuned. Furthermore, this supramolecular polymer network can be applied to remove organic dyes in water, suggesting its great potential in the treatment of waste water.

Artificial Light-Harvesting Systems Based on AIEgen-branched Rotaxane Dendrimers for Efficient Photocatalysis

Aiming at the construction of novel platform for efficient light harvesting, the precise synthesis of a new family of AIEgen-branched rotaxane dendrimers was successful realized from an AIEgen-functionalized [2]rotaxane through a controllable divergent approach. In the resultant AIE macromolecules, up to twenty-one AIEgens located at the tails of each branches, thus making them the first successful example of AIEgen-branched dendrimers. Attributed to the solvent-induced switching feature of the rotaxane branches, the integrated rotaxane dendrimers displayed interesting dynamic feature upon the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) process. Moreover, novel artificial light-harvesting systems were further constructed based on these AIEgen-branched rotaxane dendrimers, which revealed impressive generation-dependent photocatalytic performances for both photooxidation reaction and aerobic cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reaction.

Rapid and High-Yield Synthesis of [23]Crown Ether: Applied as a Wheel Component in the Formation of Pseudo[2]rotaxane and Synthesis of [2]Catenane with a Dibenzylammonium Dumbbell

A facile, rapid, and high yield synthesis of [23]crown ether (X23C7) has been developed from commercially available starting materials, in one step with good to excellent yield. The reaction is completed in 6 h under room temperature conditions, with the highest yield being 81%. The X23C7 macrocycle formed pseudo[2]rotaxane with a dibenzylammonium ion (DBA⁺) dumbbell, exhibiting strong association (K_a = 2.61 × 10³ M^-1). Consequently, a [2]catenane was synthesized from a DBA⁺-based diolefin terminated salt and X23C7 in 81% yield, using a threading-followed-ring-closing-metathesis approach.

Synthesis of functionalized copillar[4+1]arenes and rotaxane as heteromultivalent scaffolds

In this study, novel copillar[4+1]arenes were used as central heteromultivalent scaffolds via orthogonal couplings with a series of biologically relevant molecules such as carbohydrates, α-amino acids, biotin and phenylboronic acid. Further modifications by introducing maleimides or cyclooctyne groups provided molecular probes adapted to copper-free click chemistry. An octa-azidated fluorescent rotaxane bearing two distinct ligands was also generated in a fully controlled manner.

Concentration-dependent supramolecular self-assembly of A1/A2-asymmetric-difunctionalized pillar[5]arene

A series of A1/A2-bromoalkoxy-and-hydroxy-difunctionalized pillar[5]arenes were synthesized by the removal of the pillar[5]arene-bearing benzyl group using catalytic hydrogenation. The difunctionalized pillar[5]arene bearing 8-bromooctoxy and benzyloxy substituents at the A1/A2 positions formed pseudo[1]rotaxane at low concentration and double-threaded supramolecular dimer at high concentration. The supramolecular self-assembly behavior has been probed with multiple methods including varying (variable) concentration ¹H NMR spectroscopy, diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY), dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and single-crystal X-ray analysis.

Concentration-dependent supramolecular self-assembly of A1/A2-asymmetric-difunctionalized pillar[5]arene was synthesized by co-cyclization strategy. This approach enables wide range of structural manipulations to regulate the supramolecular assembly.

pH-Responsive Host-Guest Complexations Between a Water-Soluble Pillar[6]arene Dodecyl-Ammonium Chloride and Aromatic Sulfonic Acids

In the present work, new host-guest binding motifs based on a water-soluble pillar[6]arene dodecyl-ammonium chloride (CP6) with two aromatic sulfonic acids in aqueous media were fabricated. In accordance with the integrated results of ¹H NMR, 2D NOESY, and florescence titration experiments, it was demonstrated that the host-guest binding of CP6 with the two aromatic sulfonic acids in aqueous solution not only has high binding constants but also has pH-responsiveness.

Woven Polymer Networks via the Topological Transformation of a [2]Catenane

Weaving technology has been widely used to manufacture macroscopic fabrics to meet the artistic and practical needs of humanity for thousands of years. However, the fabrication of molecular fabrics with fascinating topologies and unique mechanical properties represents a significant challenge. Herein, we describe a topological transformation strategy to construct woven polymer networks (WPNs) at the molecular level via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of a zinc-template [2]catenane. The key feature of this approach is the exploitation of the pre-existing catenane crossing points that maintain the dense woven structure and the flexible alkyl chains on the [2]catenane that synergistically work with the crossing points to modulate the physicochemical and mechanical properties of the woven materials. As a result, the WPN possesses a certain degree of flexibility and stretchability, as well as high thermostability and mechanical robustness. Furthermore, we could remove the zinc ions to endow the WPN with more degrees of freedom and then enhance its mechanical behaviors by remetalation. This study not only provides a novel strategy toward woven materials with intriguing structural features and emergent mechanical adaptivities, but also highlights that mechanically interlocked molecules could offer unique opportunities for the construction of smart supramolecular materials with peculiar interlaced topologies at the molecular scale.

Daisy Chain Dendrimers: Integrated Mechanically Interlocked Molecules with Stimuli-Induced Dimension Modulation Feature

The precise construction of the high-order mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) with well-defined topological arrangements of multiple mechanically interlocked units has been a great challenge. Herein, we present the first successful preparation of a new family of daisy chain dendrimers, in which the individual [c2]daisy chain rotaxane units serve as the branches of dendrimer skeleton. In particular, the third-generation daisy chain dendrimer with 21 [c2]daisy chain rotaxane moieties was realized, which might be among the most complicated discrete high-order MIMs comprised of multiple [c2]daisy chain rotaxane units. Interestingly, such unique topological arrangements of multiple stimuli-responsive [c2]daisy chain rotaxanes endowed the resultant daisy chain dendrimers controllable and reversible nanoscale dimension modulation through the collective and amplified extension/contraction of each [c2]daisy chain rotaxane branch upon the addition of acetate anions or DMSO molecules as external stimulus. Furthermore, on the basis of such an intriguing size switching feature of daisy chain dendrimers, dynamic composite polymer films were constructed through the incorporation of daisy chain dendrimers into polymer films, which could undergo fast, reversible, and controllable shape transformations when DMSO molecules were employed as stimulus. The successful merging of [c2]daisy chain rotaxanes and dendrimers described herein provides not only a brand-new type of high-order mechanically interlocked systems with well-defined topological arrangements of [c2]daisy chain rotaxanes, but also a successful and practical approach toward the construction of supramolecular dynamic materials.

per-Alkoxy-pillar[5]arenes as Electron Donors: Electrochemical Properties of Dimethoxy-Pillar[5]arene and Its Corresponding Rotaxane

1,4-dimethoxypillar[5]arene undergoes reversible multielectron oxidations forming stable radical cations, a property retained when incorporated in [2]rotaxanes, suggesting that pillar[5]arenes can be employed as viable, yet unreported, electron donors.

Rotaxanes comprising cyclic phenylenedioxydiacetamides and secondary mono- and bis-dialkylammonium ions: effect of macrocyclic ring size on pseudorotaxane formation

[2]Rotaxanes, stabilized through multiple and cooperative hydrogen bonding system, were synthesized from dialkylammonium ions and macrocycle possessing two phenylenedioxydiacetamide units and appropriate spacers.

An azine-containing bispillar[5]arene-based multi-stimuli responsive supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane gel for effective adsorption of rhodamine B

An azine-containing bispillar[5]arene was designed and synthesized by the reaction of aldehyde functionalized-pillar[5]arene and hydrazine. Then, a novel bispillar[5]arene-based supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane has been successfully prepared via host-guest interaction. Interestingly, by taking advantage of the host-guest interactions, π-π stacking interactions and hydrogen bonding interactions, the multi-stimuli-responsive gel-sol phase transitions of such a supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane gel were successfully realized under different stimuli, such as acid, temperature, concentration, and competitive guests. Moreover, this supramolecular system could effectively adsorb dye molecule rhodamine B. It is worth noting that this supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane gel prepared in cyclohexanol solution (BP5·G·C) could be used as an adsorbent material for adsorbing rhodamine B with adsorption efficiency of 98.4%. Meanwhile, the adsorption efficiency was 97.6% for supramolecular pseudopolyrotaxane gel prepared in DMSO-H2O (v : v, 8 : 2) binary solution (BP5·G·D), also indicating the superior adsorption effect of BP5·G·D toward the dye molecule rhodamine B.

A dimethoxypillar[5]arene/azastilbene host-guest recognition motif and its applications in the fabrication of polypseudorotaxanes

Pillar[n]arenes, known as the fifth generation of host macrocycles since 2008, have become a popular topic over the past ten years. Until now, the studies of pillar[n]arenes were mainly focused on pillar[5]arenes owing to their easy synthesis and high yields. In particular, 1,4-dimethoxypillar[5]arene (DMP5), which shows a simple structure, efficient synthesis and high yield, has played important roles in the construction of various advanced supramolecular architectures. However, DMP5 has only displayed host-guest binding properties towards some guests. Therefore, the investigation of the host-guest chemistry of DMP5 should be able to greatly promote the development of pillararene chemistry. Herein, a photosensitive azastilbene derivative was chosen as a neutral guest to study the host-guest binding and stimuli-responsive behavior with DMP5. In addition, the binding behavior of DMP5 towards a series of analogous neutral guest molecules was investigated to study the driving forces of the host-guest interaction between DMP5 and the azastilbene guest. Moreover, the [2]pseudorotaxane based on DMP5 and the azastilbene guest was used to construct a polypseudorotaxane via metal coordination.

Acid/base- and base/acid-switchable complexation between anionic-/cationic-pillar[6]arenes and a viologen ditosylate salt

Two new host-guest complexes between water-soluble anionic pillar[6]arene (WP6) or cationic pillar[6]arene (CP6) and a viologen ditosylate salt G·2TsO were constructed, among which one formed from WP6 and G2+ ions can be controlled by the sequential addition of an acid and a base (HCl and NaOH, respectively), whereas the other fabricated from CP6 and TsO- ions can be switched through the sequential addition of basic and acidic reagents (NaOH and HCl, respectively).

[c2]Daisy Chain Rotaxanes as Molecular Muscles

Bistable [ c2]daisy chain rotaxanes represent a particularly intriguing class of interlocked molecules that can produce internal sliding movements with a net contraction or extension at the single-molecule level. These nanometric motions show some analogies with the sliding motions of actin and myosin filaments in sarcomeres, and this is why [ c2]daisy chain rotaxanes have been also named as “molecular muscles,” as their first synthesis in 2000. In this minireview, the authors discuss the recent history of these molecules, their modular chemical structures, and the various synthetic pathways described in the literature to access them. The authors also detail how their internal motions can be controlled and characterized by a number of chemical and physical tools. The authors finally show that their integration within polymers and materials can give access to synchronized motions and amplifications up to the macroscopic scale. Overall, the numerous examples that have been described in the literature to date demonstrate that this family of molecules has already strongly influenced the entire field of research on artificial molecular machines, and has the potential to be implemented as actuators working at all scales, from nanometric-switchable devices to mechanically active soft matter materials.

Light triggers molecular shuttling in rotaxanes: control over proximity and charge recombination

The lifetime of a charge separated state is enhanced by the effects of solvent polarity and the coordination controlled shuttling of a dumbbell in a porphyrin/fullerene rotaxane.

We present the synthesis of novel rotaxanes based on mechanically interlocked porphyrins and fullerene and their advanced investigations by means of photophysical measurements. To this end, a fullerene-capped dumbbell-type axle containing a central triazole was threaded through strapped (metallo)porphyrins—either a free-base or a zinc porphyrin. Femtosecond-resolved transient absorption measurements revealed charge-separation between the porphyrin and fullerene upon light excitation. Solvent polarity and solvent coordination effects induced molecular motion of the rotaxanes upon charge separation and enabled, for the first time, subtle control over the charge recombination by enabling and controlling the directionality of shuttling.

Restricting shuttling in bis(imidazolium)…pillar[5]arene rotaxanes using metal coordination

Metal coordination to a series of bis (imidazolium)…pillar[5]arene [2]rotaxanes through the formation of metal-carbene bonds facilitates a new strategy to restrict the shuttling motion in [2]rotaxanes. Whereas the pillar[5]arene macrocycle rapidly shuttles along the full length of the bis (imidazolium) rod for the parent [2]rotaxane, Ag(i) coordination to the imidazolium groups through the formation of N-heterocyclic carbenes leads to restricted motion, effectively confining the shuttling motion of the [2]rotaxane. The Ag(i) coordinated [2]rotaxanes can be reacted further, either removing the Ag-carbene species to recreate the parent [2]rotaxane, or reaction with more bulky Pd(ii) species to further restrict the shuttling motion through steric inhibition.

[3]rotaxanes composed of two dibenzo-24-crown-8 ether wheels and an azamacrocyclic complex

The azamacrocyclic complex was used as a platform for the construction of [3]rotaxanes containing two DB24C8 macrocycles per molecule. The complex unit incorporates two electron deficient π-bond systems and two N-H hydrogen bond donating groups which facilitated the formation of a 1 : 2 interlocked structure. Synthesis and properties of such compounds are presented. Structures of the obtained compounds were confirmed by NMR spectroscopy, ESI mass spectrometry, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Both [3]rotaxanes containing two DB24C8 macrocycles per molecule crystallise in P1[combining macron] and P21/n space groups. They have different counterions (PF6- and Cl- anions, respectively) and mostly disordered solvent molecules such as water, methanol and acetone. Both [3]rotaxanes have a flexible axle in which the Cl- salt takes the shape closer to the "S"-letter, while in the PF6- case the axle is more linear. The shape results from respective packing and intra-, and intermolecular interactions among the moieties in the rotaxane and the crystal lattice.

Cation-Modulated Rotary Speed in a Light-Driven Crown Ether Functionalized Molecular Motor

The design and synthesis of an overcrowded-alkene based molecular motor featuring a crown ether integrated in its stator structure has been accomplished. The photostationary state ratios and rotational speed of this motor can be modulated by cation coordination to the crown ether moiety, which can be reversed upon the addition of a competing chelating agent, thus achieving a dynamic control over the rotational behavior of the motor.

A novel pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular organic framework gel to achieve an ultrasensitive response by introducing the competition of cationπ and ππ interactions

Ultrasensitive response properties are an intriguing concern for stimuli-responsive materials. Herein, we report a novel method to achieve an ultrasensitive response by introducing the competition of cationπ and ππ interactions into a pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular organic framework (SOF-AMP). SOF-AMP was constructed with a novel bis-naphthalimide functionalized pillar[5]arene, which was able to form a stable supramolecular gel (SOF-AMP-G) in cyclohexanol. Interestingly, SOF-AMP-G shows an ultrasensitive response to Fe3+ through the competition of cationπ and ππ interactions. Meanwhile, the Fe3+ coordinated SOF (MSOF-Fe) shows an ultrasensitive response to H2PO4-. SOF-AMP-G displayed yellow fluorescence whereas, after the addition of 0.5 equiv. of Fe3+ to SOF-AMP-G, the yellow fluorescence was quenched. The detection limit of SOF-AMP-G for Fe3+ is 7.54 × 10-9 M. More interestingly, the Fe3+ coordinated SOF gel (MSOF-Fe-G) could sense H2PO4- with a fluorescence "turn-on". The detection limit of MSOF-Fe-G for H2PO4- is 4.21 × 10-9 M. Simultaneously, the Fe3+ and H2PO4- responsive thin films based on these SOF gels were prepared. Moreover, these SOF gels could be used as ultrasensitive ion sensors, fluorescent display materials and sensitive logic gates.

Integrative Self-Sorting: One-Pot Synthesis of a Hetero[4]rotaxane from a Daisy-Chain-Containing Hetero[4]pseudorotaxane

The structural complexity of mechanically interlocked molecules are very attractive to chemists owing to the challenges they present. In this article, novel mechanically interlocked molecules with a daisy-chain-containing hetero[4]rotaxane motif were efficiently synthesized. In addition, a novel integrative self-sorting strategy is demonstrated, involving an ABB-type (A for host, dibenzo-24-crown-8 (DB24C8), and B for guest, ammonium salt sites) monomer and a macrocycle host, benzo-21-crown-7 (B21C7), in which the assembled species in hydrogen-bonding-supported solvent only includes a novel daisy-chain-containing hetero[4]pseudorotaxane. The found self-sorting process involves the integrative recognition between B21C7 macrocycles and carefully designed components simultaneously containing two types of secondary ammonium ions and a host molecule, DB24C8 crown ether. The self-sorting strategy is integrative to undertake self-recognition behavior to form one single species of pseudorotaxane compared with the previous report. This self-sorting system can be used for the efficient one-pot synthesis of a daisy-chain-containing hetero[4]rotaxane in a good yield. The structure of hetero[4]rotaxane was confirmed by ¹ H NMR spectroscopy and high-resolution electrospray ionization (HR-ESI) mass spectrometry.

Amide-functionalized pillar[5]arenes as a novel class of macrocyclic receptors for the sensing of H2PO4- anion

A novel class of amide-functionalized pillar[5]arenes, that is, alkyl and aryl amide derivatives, has been synthesized. Highly selective binding of the dihydrogen phosphate anion over a range of anions by the new synthetic receptors is reported. First, the "binding strength-selectivity" relationship has been decided for the pillar[5]arene/anion systems.
