Chelating chloride using binuclear lanthanide complexes in water

Halide recognition by supramolecular receptors and coordination complexes in water is a long-standing challenge. In this work, we report chloride binding in water and in competing media by pre-organised binuclear kinetically inert lanthanide complexes, bridged by flexible -(CH2)2- and -(CH2)3- spacers, forming [Ln2(DO3A)2C-2] and [Ln2(DO3A)2C-3], respectively. These hydrophilic, neutral lanthanide coordination complexes are shown to bind chloride with apparent association constants of up to 105 M-1 in water and in buffered systems. Hydroxide bridging was observed in these complexes at basic pH, which was proven to be overcome by chloride. Thus, these lanthanide complexes show promise towards chloride recognition in biology and beyond. The results described here have clearly identified a new area of anion coordination chemistry that is ripe for detailed exploration.

Arel: Investigating [Eu(H2O)9]3+ Photophysics and Creating a Method to Bypass Luminescence Quantum Yield Determinations

Lanthanide luminescence has been treated separate from molecular photophysics, although the underlying phenomena are the same. As the optical transitions observed in the trivalent lanthanide ions are forbidden, they do belong to the group that molecular photophysics has yet to conquer, yet the experimental descriptors remain valid. Herein, the luminescence quantum yields (ϕ_lum), luminescence lifetimes (τ_obs), oscillator strengths (f), and the rates of nonradiative (k_nr) and radiative (k_r ≡ A) deactivation of [Eu(H₂O)₉]³⁺ were determined. Further, it was shown that instead of a full photophysical characterization, it is possible to relate changes in transition probabilities to the relative parameter A_rel, which does not require reference data. While A_rel does not afford comparisons between experiments, it resolves emission intensity changes due to emitter properties from intensity changes due to environmental effects and differences in the number of photons absorbed. When working with fluorescence this may seem trivial; when working with lanthanide luminescence it is not.

Emerging properties from mechanical tethering within a post-synthetically functionalised catenane scaffold

Using a post-synthetic modification strategy we have prepared a series of functionalised [2]catenanes to study the impact of mechanically-enforced proximity on functional group properties, including emission, electrochemistry and photoreactivity.

Luminescent lanthanide-macrocycle supramolecular assembly

A series of macrocyclic compounds, including crown ether, cyclodextrin, cucurbituril and pillararene, bound to various specific organic/inorganic/biological guest molecules and ions through various non-covalent interactions, can not only make a single system multifunctional but also endow the system with intelligence, especially for luminescent materials. Due to their excellent luminescence properties, such as long-lived excited states, sharp linear emission bands and large Stokes shift, lanthanides have shown great advantages in luminescence, and have been more and more applied in the design of advanced functional luminescent materials. Based on reported research, we summarize the progress of lanthanide luminescent materials based on different macrocyclic compounds from ion or molecule recognition to functional nano-supramolecular assembly of the lanthanide-macrocycle supramolecular system including photo-reaction mediated switch of lanthanide luminescent molecules, multicolor luminescence, ion detection and cell imaging of rare-earth up-conversion of macrocyclic supramolecular assembly. Finally, we put forward the prospects of future development of lanthanide luminescent macrocyclic supramolecular materials.

Lanthanide-Containing Rotaxanes, Catenanes, and Knots

The valuable luminescence, magnetic, and catalytic properties of lanthanide cations are beginning to be exploited in conjunction with structurally exotic mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) such as rotaxanes, catenanes and knots. This Minireview provides an account of this rapidly developing research area commencing with the use of lanthanides in extended MIM-containing frameworks. Then, attention turns to discrete lanthanide-containing pseudorotaxanes, followed by fully interlocked rotaxanes, catenanes and knots - where lanthanides have not only been incorporated into MIM architectures but have also been used to template formation of the interlocked structure. Particular focus is paid to examples where the lanthanide MIMs have been put to useful applications, in what is still a relatively youthful avenue of research in both lanthanide coordination chemistry and the chemistry of mechanically interlocked molecules.

Luminescent Anion Sensing by Transition-Metal Dipyridylbenzene Complexes Incorporated into Acyclic, Macrocyclic and Interlocked Hosts

A series of novel acyclic, macrocyclic and mechanically interlocked luminescent anion sensors have been prepared by incorporation of the isophthalamide motif into dipyridylbenzene to obtain cyclometallated complexes of platinum(II) and ruthenium(II). Both the acyclic and macrocyclic derivatives 7⋅Pt, 7⋅Ru⋅PF6 , 10⋅Pt and 10⋅Ru⋅PF6 are effective sensors for a range of halides and oxoanions. The near-infra red emitting ruthenium congeners exhibited an increased binding strength compared to platinum due to the cationic charge and thus additional electrostatic interactions. Intramolecular hydrogen-bonding between the dipyridylbenzene ligand and the amide carbonyls increases the preorganisation of both acyclic and macrocyclic metal derivatives resulting in no discernible macrocyclic effect. Interlocked analogues were also prepared, and preliminary luminescent chloride anion spectrometric titrations with 12⋅Ru⋅(PF6 )2 demonstrate a marked increase in halide binding affinity due to the complementary chloride binding pocket of the [2]rotaxane. 1 H NMR binding titrations indicate the interlocked dicationic receptor is capable of chloride recognition even in competitive 30 % aqueous mixtures.

Enhancing 31P NMR relaxation rates with a kinetically inert gadolinium complex

The kinetically stable heptadentate gadolinium complex Gd.pDO3A (1.Gd) demonstrates significant 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation enhancement of biologically relevant phosphate species; adenosine triphosphate (ATP), phosphocreatine (PCr) and inorganic phosphate. Gd.pDO3A (1.Gd) binds these species in fast exchange, enabling the relaxation of the bulk phosphate species in solution. This gives rise to 31P relaxation enhancements up to 250-fold higher than those observed for 31P relaxation enhancements with the commercial MRI contrast agent Gd.DOTA (DOTAREM), 2. Gd.pDO3A-like complexes may have potential applications as 31P magnetic resonance contrast agents, since shortening the T1 relaxation time of phosphate species would reduce the time needed to acquire 31P-MR spectra.

A multifunctional catenated host for the efficient binding of Eu3+ and Gd3+

[2]Catenane consists of various functional groups and shows efficient binding towards Eu³⁺ and Gd³⁺. A cavity-bound catenated structure is also demonstrated by single crystal X-ray analysis.

Multimetallic Lanthanide Complexes: Using Kinetic Control To Define Complex Multimetallic Arrays

Kinetically inert lanthanide complexes are proving to be highly effective building blocks for the preparation of complex heterometallic architectures, allowing complete control of metal ion domains, which cannot be achieved under thermodynamic control. Kinetic stability may render perceivable labile coordination bonds more durable than several types of covalent interactions. For complexes in clinical use, the significance of kinetic stability cannot be overstated, and this Account treats the topic accordingly. Kinetically inert complexes can be used as building blocks for elaborate synthesis. For instance, it is now possible to prepare heterometallic lanthanide complexes containing two or more different lanthanide ions by linking kinetically robust complexes together. This approach can yield bimetallic (f-f' or d-f) and trimetallic (f-f'-f″) lanthanide complexes. In this Account, we describe our studies exploiting the slow dissociation of lanthanide complexes derived from 1,4,7,10-tetraazadodecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTA) related ligands to link complexes together through synthetic manipulation of pendent groups on the ligand skeleton or through coordination of bridging donor groups to a d-block metal center. In the course of this work, we have developed a variety of such methods, ranging from peptide coupling and diazotization to Ugi and click chemistry and have also explored the use of alternative strategies that combine orthogonal protecting group chemistry with sequential complexation of different lanthanide ions or that use self-assembly to deliver well-defined multimetallic systems. These well-defined bimetallic systems also have considerable scope for exploitation. Since the earliest studies, it has been clear that there is potential for application in the burgeoning field of molecular imaging. Heterometallic lanthanide complexes can be used as single-molecule bimodal imaging agents through incorporation of MRI active and luminescent components. Alternatively, conventional luminescence methods can be exploited in conjunction with lanthanide luminescence. In the simplest cases, a single lanthanide can be used to achieve a switchable response in combination with a transition metal complex. Bimetallic f-f' complexes allow the full potential of the approach to be realized in systems in which one lanthanide responds to changes in the concentration of an analyte, while a second lanthanide center can be used to define the concentration of the probe itself. This offers a new solution to the old dichotomy of ratiometric imaging that can potentially be applied widely.

Securing a Supramolecular Architecture by Tying a Stopper Knot

We report on a rotaxane-like architecture secured by the in situ tying of an overhand knot in the tris(2,6-pyridyldicarboxamide) region of the axle through complexation with a lanthanide ion (Lu3+ ). The increase in steric bulk caused by the knotting locks a crown ether onto the thread. Removal of the lutetium ion unties the knot, and when the axle binding site for the ring is deactivated, the macrocycle spontaneously dethreads. When the binding interaction is switched on again, the crown ether rethreads over the 10 nm length of the untangled strand. The overhand knot can be retied, relocking the threaded structure, by once again adding lutetium ions.

Supramolecular anion recognition by β-HCH

The formation of highly ordered supramolecular architectures via cooperative C(aliphatic)-H·anion contacts between β-HCH and various anions (Cl^-, Br^-, I^- and HSO₄^-) was investigated by single crystal X-ray diffractometry, molecular modelling, ESI-MS and ¹H-NMR titrations.

Properties and emerging applications of mechanically interlocked ligands

Mechanically interlocked molecules have a long and rich history as ligands thanks to the key role coordination chemistry has played in the development of high yielding passive template syntheses of rotaxanes and catenanes. In this Feature Article, we highlight the effect of the mechanical bond on the properties of metal ions bound within the sterically hindered environment of the macrocycle cavity, and discuss the emerging applications of interlocked ligands in catalysis, sensing and supramolecular materials.

A lanthanide based sensor for the time-gated detection of hydrogen sulfide

A kinetically stable Eu(III) complex for the detection of sulfide in water is reported. The probe shows excellent selectivity and fast reaction time. Its long-lived luminescence makes this the first probe for the time-gated detection of sulfide in complex biological samples.

Bimetallic lanthanide complexes that display a ratiometric response to oxygen concentrations

A pair of hetero-bimetallic lanthanide complexes containing terbium and europium ions have been prepared by coupling kinetically stable complexes together using an Ugi methodology to incorporate a naphthyl chromophore. Both complexes exhibit emission from terbium and europium in solution. The terbium centred emission varies with dissolved oxygen concentration, while the europium intensity remains essentially constant in one of the complexes.

Aromatic sulfonate anion-induced pseudorotaxanes: environmentally benign synthesis, selectivity, and structural characterization

Aromatic sulfonates allow the effective construction of anion-containing pseudorotaxanes from a tetracationic macrocycle known as the “Texas box” in organic media and under organic-free aqueous conditions.

Nitrite-templated synthesis of lanthanide-containing [2]rotaxanes for anion sensing

The first anion-templated synthesis of a lanthanide-containing interlocked molecule is demonstrated by utilizing a nitrite anion to template initial pseudorotaxane formation. Subsequent stoppering of the interpenetrated assembly allows for the preparation of a lanthanide-functionalized [2]rotaxane in high yield. Following removal of the nitrite anion template, the europium [2]rotaxane host is demonstrated to recognize and sense fluoride selectively.

Advances in anion supramolecular chemistry: from recognition to chemical applications

Since the start of this millennium, remarkable progress in the binding and sensing of anions has been taking place, driven in part by discoveries in the use of hydrogen bonding, as well as the previously under-exploited anion-π interactions and halogen bonding. However, anion supramolecular chemistry has developed substantially beyond anion recognition, and now encompasses a diverse range of disciplines. Dramatic advance has been made in the anion-templated synthesis of macrocycles and interlocked molecular architectures, while the study of transmembrane anion transporters has flourished from almost nothing into a rapidly maturing field of research. The supramolecular chemistry of anions has also found real practical use in a variety of applications such as catalysis, ion extraction, and the use of anions as stimuli for responsive chemical systems.

Rotaxane and catenane host structures for sensing charged guest species

CONSPECTUS: The promise of mechanically interlocked architectures, such as rotaxanes and catenanes, as prototypical molecular switches and shuttles for nanotechnological applications, has stimulated an ever increasing interest in their synthesis and function. The elaborate host cavities of interlocked structures, however, can also offer a novel approach toward molecular recognition: this Account describes the use of rotaxane and catenane host systems for binding charged guest species, and for providing sensing capability through an integrated optical or electrochemical reporter group. Particular attention is drawn to the exploitation of the unusual dynamic properties of interlocked molecules, such as guest-induced shuttling or conformational switching, as a sophisticated means of achieving a selective and functional sensor response. We initially survey interlocked host systems capable of sensing cationic guests, before focusing on our accomplishments in synthesizing rotaxanes and catenanes designed for the more challenging task of selective anion sensing. In our group, we have developed the use of discrete anionic templation to prepare mechanically interlocked structures for anion recognition applications. Removal of the anion template reveals an interlocked host system, possessing a unique three-dimensional geometrically restrained binding cavity formed between the interlocked components, which exhibits impressive selectivity toward complementary anionic guest species. By incorporating reporter groups within such systems, we have developed both electrochemical and optical anion sensors which can achieve highly selective sensing of anionic guests. Transition metals, lanthanides, and organic fluorophores integrated within the mechanically bonded structural framework of the receptor are perturbed by the binding of the guest, with a concomitant change in the emission profile. We have also exploited the unique dynamics of interlocked hosts by demonstrating that an anion-induced conformational change can be used as a means of signal transduction. Electrochemical sensing has been realized by integration of the redox-active ferrocene functionality within a range of rotaxane and catenanes; binding of an anion perturbs the metallocene, leading to a cathodic shift in the ferrocene/ferrocenium redox couple. In order to obtain practical sensors for target charged guest species, confinement of receptors at a surface is necessary in order to develop robust, reuseable devices. Surface confinement also offers advantages over solution based receptors, including amplification of signal, enhanced guest binding thermodynamics and the negation of solubility problems. We have fabricated anion-templated rotaxanes and catenanes on gold electrode surfaces and demonstrated that the resulting mechanically bonded self-assembled monolayers are electrochemically responsive to the binding of anions, a crucial first step toward the advancement of sophisticated, highly selective, anion sensory devices. Rotaxane and catenane host molecules may be engineered to offer a superior level of molecular recognition, and the incorporation of optical or electrochemical reporter groups within these interlocked frameworks can allow for guest sensing. Advances in synthetic templation strategies has facilitated the synthesis of interlocked architectures and widened their interest as prototype molecular machines. However, their unique host-guest properties are only now beginning to be exploited as a sophisticated approach to chemical sensing. The development of functional host-guest sensory systems such as these is of great interest to the interdisciplinary field of supramolecular chemistry.

Exploiting lanthanide luminescence in supramolecular assemblies

We review herein significant and recent work focused on the incorporation of luminescent lanthanides into switchable, supramolecular and surface bound assemblies.
