Inkjet-Printed Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diodes with an Air-Stable Hole Transport Material

High-efficiency quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) were fabricated using inkjet printing with a novel cross-linkable hole transport material N,N'-(9,9'-spirobi[fluorene]-2,7-diylbis[4,1-phenylene])bis(N-phenyl-4'-vinyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-amine) (SDTF). The cross-linked SDTF film has excellent solvent resistance, high thermal stability, and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level of -5.54 eV. The inkjet-printed SDTF film is very smooth and uniform, with roughness as low as 0.37 nm, which is comparable with that of the spin-coated film (0.28 nm). The SDTF films stayed stable without any pinhole or grain even after 2 months in air. All-solution-processed QLEDs were fabricated; the maximum external quantum efficiency of 5.54% was achieved with the inkjet-printed SDTF in air, which is comparable to that of the spin-coated SDTF in a glove box (5.33%). Electrical stabilities of both spin-coated and inkjet-printed SDTF at the device level were also investigated and both showed a similar lifetime. The study demonstrated that SDTF is very promising as a printable hole transport material for making QLEDs using inkjet printing.

Salts of extended tetrathiafulvalene analogues: relationships between molecular structure, electrochemical properties and solid state organisation

By considering the structures of many salts derived from extended TTF analogues, relationships between the molecular architecture of the donors with their electrochemical properties and their stacking mode in the salts are presented in this critical review. Three categories of donors corresponding to their extension modes have been considered. Firstly, for linearly extended TTFs the crucial role of the spacer in modifying the electrochemical properties and the packing mode in the salts is presented. Secondly, bidimentional extension of the donors obtained by linking several dithiafulvenyl units on a TTF core led to materials with increased dimensionality. Finally, the last class corresponds to the fusion, directly or across a benzene ring, of TTF frameworks. The former are the base of many salts with metallic behaviour. (148 references.).

Synthesis, X-ray Structure, and Electrochemical Oxidative Coupling Reactions of 1,5- and 2,6-Bis(1,4-dithiafulven-6-yl)naphthalenes

Novel pi-extended tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) derivatives (12a-c, 13a-c, 15a-c) in which the two 1,3-dithiole units are connected through a naphthalene spacer have been prepared in high yields by Wittig-Horner olefination reaction from dialkoxy-substituted diformylnaphthalenes (11a,b, 14) and differently substituted phosphonate esters (10a-c). The electrochemical study revealed a similar behavior for the novel electron donor molecules (12a-c, 13a-c, 15a-c) regardless of the position of the 1,3-dithiole rings on the naphthalene core. The extended donors undergo an efficient electrooxidation process affording new oligomeric extended TTF species which exhibit lower oxidation potential values than their precursor donors. EPR experiments confirm the presence of the cation radical derived from the oligomeric TTF vinylogues and support an ECE process. The structural study has been carried out by X-ray analysis of 12a and semiempirical PM3 calculations and reveals a distorted geometry from the planarity with the naphthalene moiety forming an angle of approximately 35 degrees with the thiafulvalene rings. A good agreement was found between the experimental and calculated values, thus validating the PM3 method. The chemical oxidation of the synthesized donors (12a-c, 13a-c, 15a-c) with strong electron acceptors give rise to charge transfer complexes (CTC) which were characterized by UV-vis, FTIR, and EPR spectroscopy.

Bridged Dithienylethylenes as Precursors of Small Bandgap Electrogenerated Conjugated Polymers

Bridged dithienylethylenes (DTEs) bearing solubilizing alkyl chains at various positions (2-5) have been synthesized by McMurry dimerization of cyclopenta[b]thiophen-6-ones. In order to introduce alkyl substituents at different positions of the DTE molecule, the precursor ketones have been prepared by different strategies based on a combination of Mannich or Wittig-Horner reaction and Friedel-Craft intramolecular cyclization. The position and the length of the alkyl substituents exert a strong effect on the ability of the precursor to undergo electrochemical polymerization. Thus, whereas substitution at the alpha-position of the ethylene linkage (3) results in a rapid inhibition of electropolymerization, introduction of alkyl chains at the beta-position (4, 5) greatly improves the efficiency of the polymerization process. The analysis of the electrochemical and optical properties of the polymers shows that rigidification of the DTE molecule leads to a significant decrease of the oxidation potential and bandgap. A comparative analysis of DTE and its bridged analogues by means of X-ray diffraction reveals, in agreement with experimental and theoretical results, that the observed reduction of both the HOMO-LUMO gap of the precursor and the bandgap of the corresponding polymers are related to a relaxation of bond length alternation in the DTE moiety.
