Abstract
To develop a convenient and intelligent detector for simultaneous and in-situ detection of Al3+ and F- in groundwater, a novel organic probe called RBP has been prepared. With the increase of Al3+, RBP showed a significant fluorescence enhancement at 588 nm, and the detection limit was 0.130 mg/L. After combining with fluorescent internal standard CDs, the fluorescence of RBP-Al-CDs at 588 nm was quenched due to the replace of F- for Al3+, while the CDs at 460 nm remained unchanged, and the detection limit was 0.0186 mg/L. For convenient and intelligent detection, an RBP-based logic detector has been developed for simultaneous detection of Al3+ and F-. Within the ultra-trace, low concentration, and high concentration range of Al3+ and F-, the logic detector can achieve rapid feedback on their concentration levels ("U", "L" and "H") through different output modes of the signal lamps. The development of logical detector is of great significance for studying the in-situ chemical behavior of Al3+ and F- and for daily household detection.

Abstract
Due to the huge threat of formaldehyde (FA) on human beings, the development of chemical sensors for swift detection of FA in solutions and gas phase is highly anticipated. In this paper, a versatile logic detector and a portable fluorescent film based on small-scaled Eu-based MOF were applied successfully to detect FA in solutions and gas phase, respectively. For FA in aqueous solution, the design of logic detector will efficiently identify FA in different concentration ranges: when the FA concentration are 0-500 ppb, 500-1000 ppb and >1000 ppb, the output signals of logic detector are the concentration level of FA ("L", "H" and "VH"), and accompanied by red, purple and blue signal lamps to remind, respectively. For FA in the air, the color of rigid film sensor will gradually change from red to blue with the increase of FA under UV lamp, and the detection limit of gaseous FA is 11.8 ppb. Through the preparation of logic devices and fluorescent films, Eu-based MOF realized swift detection of FA in solutions and gas phase, which will be very helpful to improve the human response level to FA from different emission sources.

Abstract
Fluorescent molecular rotors with a high binding affinity toward the guanosine quartet (G4) were incorporated as guest fluorophores into host supramolecular hydrogels based on the self-assembly of G4 units, to probe the local environment. Torsional dynamics of the rotors were severely inhibited inside the hydrogels in comparison with aqueous solutions, although the hydrogels were composed of >95% water. Moreover, even though all the gels were rigid bodies with no spontaneous deformation or flow property at room temperature, torsional dynamics in G4 borate gels was found to be consistently several orders of magnitude slower than those in the other G4 gels, irrespective of the identity of the molecular rotor probe. This clear difference in the molecular mobilities of the guest fluorophore could be attributed to systematic differences in the internal structure between the two categories of host G4 hydrogels. In specific terms, the borate groups in G4 borate hydrogels serve as bridging units between separate G4 quadruplex strands, generating additional cross-links that reinforce the network structure of the gel. The results demonstrate that molecular rotors act as efficient fluorescent probes for the quantitative assessment of the molecular-level environment and dynamics inside the hydrogels, an aspect that is missed out by most other analytical methods that are routinely employed for studying them.

Abstract
The studied enzyme-based biocatalytic system mimics NXOR Boolean logic gate, which is a logical operator that corresponds to equality in Boolean algebra. It gives the functional value true (1) if both functional arguments (input signals) have the same logical value (0,0 or 1,1), and false (0) if they are different (0,1 or 1,0). The output signal producing reaction is catalyzed by pyrroloquinoline quinone-dependent glucose dehydrogenase (PQQ-GDH), which is inhibited at acidic and basic pH values. Two other reactions catalyzed by esterase and urease produce acetic acid and ammonium hydroxide, respectively, shifting solution pH from the optimum pH for PQQ-GDH to acidic and basic values (1,0 and 0,1 input combinations, respectively), thus switching the enzyme activity off (output 0). When the input signals are not applied (0,0 combination) or both applied compensating each other (1,1 combination) the optimum pH is preserved, thus keeping PQQ-GDH running at the high rate (output 1). The biocatalytic cascade mimicking the NXOR gate was characterized optically and electrochemically. In the electrochemical experiments the PQQ-GDH enzyme communicated electronically with a conducting electrode support, thus resulting in the electrocatalytic current when signal combinations 0,0 and 1,1 were applied. The logic gate operation, when it was realized electrochemically, was also extended to the biomolecular release controlled by the gate. The release system included two electrodes, one performing the NXOR gate and another one activated for the release upon electrochemically stimulated alginate hydrogel dissolution. The studied system represents a general approach to the biocatalytic realization of the NXOR logic gate, which can be included in different catalytic cascades mimicking operation of concatenated gates in sophisticated logic circuitries.

Abstract
DNA has played an early and powerful role in the development of bottom-up nanotechnologies, not least because of DNA's precise, predictable, and controllable properties of assembly on the nanometer scale. Watson-Crick complementarity has been used to build complex 2D and 3D architectures and design a number of nanometer-scale systems for molecular computing, transport, motors, and biosensing applications. Most of such devices are built with classical B-DNA helices and involve classical A-T/U and G-C base pairs. However, in addition to the above components underlying the iconic double helix, a number of alternative pairing schemes of nucleobases are known. This review focuses on two of these noncanonical classes of DNA helices: G-quadruplexes and the i-motif. The unique properties of these two classes of DNA helix have been utilized toward some remarkable constructions and applications: G-wires; nanostructures such as DNA origami; reconfigurable structures and nanodevices; the formation and utilization of hemin-utilizing DNAzymes, capable of generating varied outputs from biosensing nanostructures; composite nanostructures made up of DNA as well as inorganic materials; and the construction of nanocarriers that show promise for the therapeutics of diseases.

Abstract
Herein, we report a carbazole (Cz) ligand that displays distinct turn-on fluorescence signals upon interaction with human telomeric G-quadruplex ( h-TELO) and nuclease enzymes. Interestingly, Cz selectively binds and stabilizes the mixed hybrid topology of h-TELO G-quadruplex that withstands digestion by exonucleases and nuclease S1. The distinct fluorescence signatures of Cz-stabilized h-TELO with nucleases are used to design conceptually novel DNA devices for selectively detecting the enzymatic activity of DNase I as well as performing logic operations. An INHIBIT logic gate is constructed using h-TELO and DNase I as the inputs while the inputs of h-TELO and nuclease S1 form a YES logic gate. Furthermore, a two-input two-output reusable logic device with "multireset" function is developed by using h-TELO and DNase I as inputs. On the basis of this platform, combinatorial logic systems (INHIBIT-INHIBIT and NOR-OR) have been successfully installed using different combinations of nucleases as inputs. Moreover, this new strategy of using a synthetic dual emissive probe and enzyme/DNA inputs for constructing reusable logic device may find important applications in biological computing and information processing.

Abstract
A simple technology to construct diverse DNA logic gates (OR and INHIBIT) has been designed utilizing a H(+) and/or Ag(+) induced i-motif structure. The logic gates are easily controlled and also show a real time response towards inputs. The research provides a new insight for designing DNA logic gates using an i-motif DNA structure.

Abstract
With the potential to engineer biological systems, synthetic biology is an emerging field that combines various disciplines of sciences. It encompasses combinations of DNA, RNA and protein modules for constructing desired systems and the "rewiring" of existing signalling networks. Despite recent advances, this field still lags behind in the artificial reconstruction of cellular processes, and thus demands new modules and switches to create "genetic circuits". The widely characterised noncanonical nucleic acid secondary structures, G-quadruplexes are promising candidates to be used as biological modules in synthetic biology. Structural plasticity and functional versatility are significant G-quadruplex traits for its integration into a biological system and for diverse applications in synthetic circuits.
