Molybdenum-Copper Antagonism In Metalloenzymes And Anti-Copper Therapy

The connection between 3d (Cu) and 4d (Mo) via the "Mo-S-Cu" unit is called Mo-Cu antagonism. Biology offers case studies of such interactions in metalloproteins such as Mo/Cu-CO Dehydrogenases (Mo/Cu-CODH), and Mo/Cu Orange Protein (Mo/Cu-ORP). The CODH significantly maintains the CO level in the atmosphere below the toxic level by converting it to non-toxic CO2 for respiring organisms. Several models were synthesized to understand the structure-function relationship of these native enzymes. However, this interaction was first observed in ruminants, and they convert molybdate (MoO4 2- ) into tetrathiomolybdate (MoS4 2- ; TTM), reacting with cellular Cu to yield biological unavailable Mo/S/Cu cluster, then developing Cu-deficiency diseases. These findings inspire the use of TTM as a Cu-sequester drug, especially for treating Cu-dependent human diseases such as Wilson diseases (WD) and cancer. It is well known that a balanced Cu homeostasis is essential for a wide range of biological processes, but negative consequence leads to cell toxicity. Therefore, this review aims to connect the Mo-Cu antagonism in metalloproteins and anti-copper therapy.

Recent progress in dichalcophosphate coinage metal clusters and superatoms

Atomically precise clusters of group 11 metals (Cu, Ag, and Au) attract considerable attention owing to their remarkable structure and fascinating properties. One of the unique subclasses of these clusters is based on dichalcophosphate ligands of [(RO)₂PE₂]^- type (E = S or Se, and R = alkyl). These ligands successfully stabilise the most diverse Cu, Ag, and Au clusters and superatoms, spanning from simple ones to amazing assemblies featuring unusual structural and bonding patterns. It is noteworthy that such complicated clusters are assembled directly from cheap and simple reagents, metal(I) salts and dichalcophosphate anions. This reaction, when performed in the presence of a hydride or other anion sources, or foreign metal ions, results in hydrido- or anion-templated homo- or heteronuclear structures. In this feature article, we survey the recent advances in this exciting field, highlighting the powerful synthetic capabilities of the system "a metal(I) salt - [(RO)₂PX₂]^- ligands - a templating anion or borohydride" as an inexhaustible platform for the creation of new atomically precise clusters, superatoms, and nanoalloys.

Platonic and Archimedean solids in discrete metal-containing clusters

Metal-containing clusters have attracted increasing attention over the past 2-3 decades. This intense interest can be attributed to the fact that these discrete metal aggregates, whose atomically precise structures are resolved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), often possess intriguing geometrical features (high symmetry, aesthetically pleasing shapes and architectures) and fascinating physical properties, providing invaluable opportunities for the intersection of different disciplines including chemistry, physics, mathematical geometry and materials science. In this review, we attempt to reinterpret and connect these fascinating clusters from the perspective of Platonic and Archimedean solid characteristics, focusing on highly symmetrical and complex metal-containing (metal = Al, Ti, V, Mo, W, U, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Pt, Cu, Ag, Au, lanthanoids (Ln), and actinoids) high-nuclearity clusters, including metal-oxo/hydroxide/chalcogenide clusters and metal clusters (with metal-metal binding) protected by surface organic ligands, such as thiolate, phosphine, alkynyl, carbonyl and nitrogen/oxygen donor ligands. Furthermore, we present the symmetrical beauty of metal cluster structures and the geometrical similarity of different types of clusters and provide a large number of examples to show how to accurately describe the metal clusters from the perspective of highly symmetrical polyhedra. Finally, knowledge and further insights into the design and synthesis of unknown metal clusters are put forward by summarizing these "star" molecules.

Stabilization of {Ag20(StBu)10} and {Ag19(StBu)10} Toroidal Complexes in DMSO: HPLC-ICP-AES, PL, and Structural Studies

The presence of DMSO provides a unique ability to stabilize silver toroidal complexes in the direct reaction between AgStBu and AgNO3 at 80 °C. Slow cooling results in large crystals of [NO3@Ag19.2(StBu)10(DMSO)5.2(NO3)8.2]·3DMSO (1), which were isolated and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis. The crystal structure contains both {Ag20(StBu)10} and {Ag19(StBu)10} clusters. The solution of these material in DMSO was studied with HPLC techniques, which demonstrated the presence of both complexes in solution. The use of [SiW12O40]4– as counter anion gives crystals of a double complex salt [Ag17.8(NO3)3.8(StBu)10][SiW12O40]·30DMSO (2) under the same conditions. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) was studied.

Self-assembly patterns of non-metalloid silver thiolates: structural, HR-ESI-MS and stability studies

Screening of AgNO₃/AgS^tBu solutions in DMF, DMSO and NMP resulted in the isolation of three novel nanosized silver/thiolate complexes with a torus-like {Ag₂₀(S^tBu)₁₀} core. The structures of [NO₃@Ag₂₀(S^tBu)₁₀(NO₃)₉(DMF)₆] (1) and [NO₃@Ag₂₀(^tBuS)₁₀(NO₃)₈(NMP)₈][NO₃@Ag₁₉(^tBuS)₁₀(NO₃)₈(NMP)₆]₂(NO₃) (2) were studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). The self-assembly process leading to 1 can be switched to a different outcome using Br^-, resulting in [Br@Ag₁₆(S^tBu)₈(NO₃)₅(DMF)₃](NO₃)₂ (3), which is the one of the few genuine host-guest complexes in the silver/thiolate systems. Solutions of the individual complexes in CH₃CN were studied by HR-ESI-MS techniques, which revealed a dynamic behavior for each complex, driven by a redistribution of the {AgNO₃} units. This dynamics results in the appearance of both cationic and anionic species, based on unchanged silver-thiolate cores. Daylight causes degradation of 3 with the formation of a composite material based on defective orthorhombic Ag₂S with a porous morphology, as observed using the SEM technique. The electrocatalytic HER activity of such a material was studied.

Multifunctional DyIII Enantiomeric Pairs Showing Enhanced Photoluminescences and Third-Harmonic Generation Responses through the Coordination Role of Homochiral Tridentate N,N,N-Pincer Ligands

By utilizing Dy(hfac)₃(H₂O)₂ to react with enantiomerically pure tridentate N,N,N-pincer ligands, namely (-)/(+)-2,6-bis(4',5'-pinene-2'-pyridyl)pyridine (L_R and L_S), respectively, homochiral Dy^III enantiomeric pairs formulated as Dy(hfac)₃L_R/Dy(hfac)₃L_S (R-1/S-1) (hfac^- = hexafluoroacetylacetonate) were achieved and structurally characterized. Meanwhile, their magnetic, photoluminescent (PL), and chiroptical properties were probed. The PL test results indicate that the precursor Dy(hfac)₃(H₂O)₂ only shows very weak emission, while R-1 exhibits characteristic Dy^III f-f transition emission bands at room temperature. Furthermore, the nonlinear optical responses of Dy(hfac)₃(H₂O)₂, L_R/L_S, and R-1/S-1 were investigated in detail based on crystalline samples. The results reveal that L_R and L_S present the coexistence of second- and third-harmonic generation (SHG and THG) responses with more intense signals for SHG responses; and Dy(hfac)₃(H₂O)₂ merely displays weak THG responses, while R-1 and S-1 also only exhibit THG responses. However, the THG intensities of R-1 and S-1 are more than six times larger than that of Dy(hfac)₃(H₂O)₂ under the identical measurement conditions. These results demonstrate that introducing homochiral N,N,N-pincer ligands to replace two H₂O molecules of Dy(hfac)₃(H₂O)₂ results in significant improvements of both PL performances and THG responses of resultant R-1/S-1 enantiomers. R-1 and S-1 integrate PL, THG, and chiral optical activity in one molecule, suggesting their multifunctional merits. In particular, a convenient method is introduced to simultaneously test THG and SHG responses of molecular materials based on crystalline samples in this work.

Synthesis and structural characterization of inverse-coordination clusters from a two-electron superatomic copper nanocluster

We have synthesized and structurally characterized a series of centred cuboctahedral copper clusters, namely [Cu13{S2CNR2}6{C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR'}4](PF6), 1a-d (where a: R = n Bu, R' = CO2Me; b: R = n Bu, R' = CO2Et; c: R = iPr, R' = CO2Et; d: R = n Pr, R' = 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3); [Cu12(μ12-S){S2CNR2}6{C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR'}4], 2a-c; [Cu12(μ12-Cl){S2CNR2}6{C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR'}4](PF6), 3a-e (where e: R = n Bu, R' = Ph); [Cu12(μ12-Br){S2CN n Bu2}6{C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CPh}4](PF6), 4e; and [Cu12(μ12-Cl)(μ3-Cl){S2CN n Bu2}6{C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CCO2Me}3]+ 5a. Cluster 1a is the first structurally characterized copper cluster having a Cu13 centered cuboctahedral arrangement, a miniature of the bulk copper fcc structure. Furthermore, the partial Cu(0) character in the 2-electron superatoms 1 was confirmed by XANES. Inverse coordination clusters 2-5 are the first examples of copper clusters containing main group elements (Cl, Br, S) with a hyper-coordination number, twelve. A combined theoretical and experimental study was performed, which shows that the central copper (formally Cu1-) in nanoclusters 1 can be replaced by chalcogen/halogen atoms, resulting in the formation of clusters 2-5 which show enhanced luminescence properties and increase in the ionic component of the host-guest interaction as Br ≈ Cl > S > Cu, which is consistent with the Cu-X Wiberg indices. The new compounds have been characterized by ESI-MS, 1H, 13C NMR, IR, UV-visible, emission spectroscopy, and the structures 2a-b, 3d-e, 4e and 5a were established by X-ray diffraction analysis.

Models for aerobic carbon monoxide dehydrogenase: synthesis, characterization and reactivity of paramagnetic MoVO(μ-S)CuI complexes

Complexes exhibiting the Mo^VO(μ-S)Cu^I cores, EPR properties, electronic structures and biomimetic reactions of aerobic Mo/Cu-containing carbon monoxide dehydrogenases are reported.

Reaction of [CoCp₂][Tp^iPrMoOS(OAr)] [Cp = η⁵-cyclopentadienyl; Tp^iPr = hydrotris(3-isopropylpyrazol-1-yl)borate; OAr = phenolate or derivative thereof] with [Cu(NCMe)(Me₃tcn)]BF₄ (Me₃tcn = 1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) in MeCN at –30 °C results in the formation of red-brown/black, paramagnetic, μ-sulfido-Mo(v)/Cu(i) complexes, Tp^iPrMoO(OAr)(μ-S)Cu(Me₃tcn). The complexes possess the MoO(μ-S)Cu core found in aerobic carbon monoxide dehydrogenases (CODHs) and exhibit X-band EPR spectra closely related to those of semi-reduced CODH, with g_iso ∼ 1.937, hyperfine coupling to ^95,97Mo (a_iso = 39–42 × 10^–4 cm^–1) and strong superhyperfine coupling to ^63,65Cu (a_iso = 34–63 × 10^–4 cm^–1). Anisotropic spectra exhibit monoclinic symmetry with g₁ ∼ 1.996, g₂ ∼ 1.944 and g₃ ∼ 1.882, and nearly isotropic A_Cu values (75–90 × 10^–4 cm^–1). The X-ray structures of four derivatives (Ar = Ph, C₆H₄^tBu-2, C₆H₄^sBu-2, C₆H₄Ph-4) are reported and discussed along with that of the Ar = C₆H₃^tBu₂-3,5 derivative (communicated in C. Gourlay, D. J. Nielsen, J. M. White, S. Z. Knottenbelt, M. L. Kirk and C. G. Young, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2006, 128, 2164). The complexes exhibit distorted octahedral oxo-Mo(v) and distorted tetrahedral Cu(i) centres bridged by a single bent μ-sulfido ligand, with Mo–S and Cu–S distances and Mo–S–Cu angles in the ranges 2.262–2.300 Å, 2.111–2.134 Å and 115.87–134.27°, respectively. The 2 t-butyl derivative adopts a unique phenolate conformation with O Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> Mo–O–Cα and O Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> Mo–S–Cu torsion angles of 92.7 and 21.1°, respectively, very different from those of the other structurally characterized derivatives (31–47 and 33–45°, respectively) and exhibits a relatively short Mo···Cu distance [3.752(2) Å vs. 3.806(7)–4.040(2) Å]. As well, the a_Cu value of this complex (34.3 × 10^–4 cm^–1) is much lower than the values observed for other members of the series (55–63 × 10^–4 cm^–1), supporting the hypothesis that the electronic structure of the MoO(μ-S)Cu core unit and the degree of intermetallic communication are strongly dependent on the geometry of the MoO(OR)(μ-S)Cu unit. The complexes participate in an electrochemically reversible Mo(vi)/Mo(v) redox couple and react with cyanide undergoing decupration and desulfurization reactions of the type observed for CODH.

Tungsten(VI)-Copper(I)-Sulfur Cluster-Supported Metal-Organic Frameworks Bridged by in Situ Click-Formed Tetrazolate Ligands

Six analogous two-dimensional (2D) [Tp*WS₃Cu₃]-based (Tp* = hydridotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate) networks, namely, {[(Tp*WS₃Cu₃)₂L₃](μ₃-N₃)}_n (2: L = 5-methyltetrazolate (Mtta); 3a: L = 5-ethyltetrazolate (Etta)) and {[(Tp*WS₃Cu₃)₂L₃]BF₄}_n (3b: L = Etta; 4: L = 5-propyltetrazolate (Ptta); 5: L = 5-butyltetrazolate (Btta); 6: L = 5-pentyltetrazolate (Petta)) were synthesized by reactions of [Et₄N][Tp*WS₃] (1), [Cu(CH₃CN)₄]BF₄, NaN₃, and NH₄BF₄ in different nitrile solvents (CH₃(CH₂)_nCN, n = 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4) under solvothermal conditions. In the structures of 2-6, each alkyl tetrazolate L as a bridging ligand was generated in situ from the "click" reaction between azide and nitrile. These 2D (6,3) networks support two types of voids wherein the pendant alkyl groups are accommodated. A tetrahedron cage-like cluster [Tp*W(μ₃-S)₃(μ₃-S')Cu₃]₄ (7) was also formed in some of the above reactions and can be readily separated by solvent extraction. The proportion of 7 increased with the elongation of the alkyl chains and finally became the exclusive product when heptylnitrile was employed. Further use of CuCN as a surrogate for [Cu(CH₃CN)₄]BF₄ with the aim of introducing additional CN bridges into the network led us to isolate a tetrazolate-free compound, {[Et₄N]{(Tp*WS₃Cu₃)[Cu₂(CN)_4.5]}₂·2PhCH₂CN}_n (8·2PhCH₂CN), a unique 2D network that features {(Tp*WS₃Cu₃)[Cu₂(CN)₅]}₂^2-, {(Tp*WS₃Cu₃)₃[Cu₃(CN)₇]₂[Cu(CN)₃]}^4-, and {(Tp*WS₃Cu₃)[Cu₄(CN)₉]}₂^6- ring subunits. Compounds 5-8 are soluble in DMF and exhibit a reverse saturable absorption and self-focusing third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) effect at 532 nm with hyperpolarizability γ values in the range of 4.43 × 10^-30 to 5.40 × 10^-30 esu, which are 400-500 times larger than that of their precursor 1. The results provide an interesting insight into the synergetic synthetic strategy related to the assembly of the [Tp*WS₃Cu₃]²⁺ cluster core, the "click" formation of the tetrazolate ligands, and the construction of the [Tp*WS₃Cu₃]²⁺ cluster-based 2D networks.

[Cd(H2O)6]@{Cd6Cl4(nico)12[Hg(Tab)2(μ-Cl)]2}: a heterometallic host–guest icosidodecahedron cage via hierarchical assembly

A reaction of [Hg(Tab)₂(nico)](PF₆) (Tab = 4-(trimethylammonio)benzenethiolate, nico = nicotinate) with equimolar CdCl₂·2.5H₂O afforded a unique heterometallic cage complex [Cd(H₂O)₆]@{Cd₆Cl₄(nico)₁₂[Hg(Tab)₂(μ-Cl)]₂}.

Kinetics Aspects of the Reversible Assembly of Copper in Heterometallic Mo3CuS4 Clusters with 4,4'-Di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine

Treatment of the triangular [Mo₃S₄Cl₃(dbbpy)₃]Cl cluster ([1]Cl) with CuCl produces a novel tetrametallic cuboidal cluster [Mo₃(CuCl)S₄Cl₃(dbbpy)₃][CuCl₂] ([2][CuCl₂]), whose crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction (dbbpy = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine). This species, which contains two distinct types of Cu(I), is the first example of a diimine-functionalized heterometallic M₃M'S₄ cluster. Kinetics studies on both the formation of the cubane from the parent trinuclear cluster and its dissociation after treatment with halides, supported by NMR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, cyclic voltammetry, and density functional theory calculations, are provided. On the one hand, the results indicate that addition of Cu(I) to [1]⁺ is so fast that its kinetics can be monitored only by cryo-stopped flow at -85 °C. On the other hand, the release of the CuCl unit in [2]⁺ is also a fast process, which is unexpectedly assisted by the CuCl₂^- counteranion in a process triggered by halide (X^-) anions. The whole set of results provide a detailed picture of the assembly-disassembly processes in this kind of cluster. Interconversion between trinuclear M₃S₄ clusters and their heterometallic M₃M'S₄ derivatives can be a fast process occurring readily under the conditions employed during reactivity and catalytic studies, so their occurrence is a possibility that must be taken into account in future studies.

Diverse Tp*-Capped W-Cu-S Clusters from One-Pot Assembly Involving in Situ Thiolation of Phosphines

In the absence/presence of S8, the one-pot assembly of [Et4N][Tp*WS3] [1; Tp* = hydridotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate] with [Cu(MeCN)4]PF6 and bis- or tetraphosphine ligands 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe), 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (dppp), 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane (dppb), and N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)ethylenediamine (dppeda) produces six W-Cu-S clusters, namely, [(Tp*WS3Cu2Cl)2(dppe)] (2), [Tp*WS3Cu4(dppp)2(μ4-Cl)(μ-Cl)]PF6·MeCN (3·MeCN), [(Tp*WS3Cu3)2(μ4-Cl)(μ-Cl)2(dpppS2)] (4), [(Tp*WS3Cu2Cl)2(dppbS2)]·2MeCN·2H2O (5·2MeCN·2H2O), [(Tp*WS3Cu3Cl2)2(dppbS2)] (6), and [(Tp*WS3Cu3)2(Ph2PS2)3(μ6-Cl)0.5](PF6)0.5·0.75CH2Cl2 (7·0.75CH2Cl2). Compounds 2-7 are characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis, (1)H and (31)P{(1)H} NMR, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and X-ray crystallography. For 2, the dppe ligand bridges a pair of butterfly-shaped [Tp*WS3Cu2] cores to form a double-butterfly-shaped structure. For 4, the dppp ligand is susceptible toward S association and forms an in situ generated dpppS2 ligand, supporting an octanuclear double-half-open-cubane structure and contrasting an analogous system wherein a pentanuclear motorcycle-shaped cationic cluster 3 is formed with the absence of S8. A longer dppb ligand readily converts to S-based ligands in 5 and 6, subsequently serving as bridges between a pair of a butterfly-shaped (5) and nest-shaped (6) clusters. Further use of a tetraphosphine ligand, dppeda, in the cluster formation, with the presence of S8, leads to an unexpected ligand degradation to give the [Ph2PS2](-) anions. Three [Ph2PS2](-) anions juxtapose a pair of nest-shaped cluster cores to yield an octanuclear cluster, 7, featuring a cage to encapsulate μ6-Cl(-). The third-order nonlinear-optical (NLO) properties of 2-7 in N,N-dimethylformamide, investigated using a Z-scan technique at 532 nm, show that 2-6 have a reverse saturable absorption, while 7 has a notable saturable absorption. All of 2-7 exhibit a self-focusing effect with hyperpolarizability γ values in the range of 4.71 × 10(-30)-1.02 × 10(-29) esu, which are 440-1000 times higher than that of 1. The formation of 4-7 from 1 through the in situ thiolation of phosphine ligands presents a new approach to the design and assembly of the W-Cu-S clusters with interesting structural arrays and better NLO properties.

An unusual 32-membered copper(ii) metallomacrocube based on a Cu4O3X cubic core: photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and magnetic properties

Spectroscopic and crystallographic investigations of novel BODIPY-derived metal-organic frameworks

To explore new 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY)-derived metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), we employed 2,6-dicarboxyl-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-phenyl-4,4-difluoroboradiazaindacene (H2L) as a ligand to successfully synthesize five coordination polymers, namely, {[Zn2(L)2(bpp)]·2H2O·2EtOH}n (1), {[Cd2(L)2(bpp)]·2H2O·EtOH}n (2), {[Cd2(L)(bpe)3(NO3)2]·2H2O·DMF·EtOH}n (3), {[Cd(L)(bpe)0.5(DMF)(H2O)]}n (4), and {[Cd(L)(bpe)0.5]·1.5H2O·DMF}n (5) (bpp = 1,3-bi(4-pyridyl)propane, bpe = 1,2-bi(4-pyridyl)ethane). Except for two 2D-layer coordination polymers 3 and 4, the rest samples exhibit 3D metal-organic frameworks with certain pore sizes, especially MOFs 1 and 5. Spectroscopic and crystallographic investigations demonstrate that the absorption and emission energies of the BODIPY chromophores are sensitive to the coordination modes. Moreover, in case 2, the transition metal centers coordinated with the dicarboxylate ligands L(2-) are capable of forming the two BODIPY units in coplanar arrangements (θ = 37.9°), simultaneously suppressing the uncommon J-dimer absorption band centered at 705 nm with a long tail into the near-infrared region at room temperature. On the other hand, in comparison with the ligand H2L, the emission of monomer-like BODIPY in case 3 is enhanced in the solid state by a considerably long distance between the parallel BODIPY planes (about 14.0 Å).

Structural diversity and photocatalytic properties of Cd(ii) coordination polymers constructed by a flexible V-shaped bipyridyl benzene ligand and dicarboxylate derivatives

Reactions of Cd(OAc)₂ with V-shaped bipyridyl benzene and five benzenedicarboxylic acid derivatives gave rise to five new CPs. Complexes 1–5 exhibited relatively good photocatalytic activity towards the degradation of methylene blue.

Unusual hysteresis loops with coercivity maximum (∼2000 Oe) at 20 K are observed in a copper(ii) cubane. The apparent anomaly appears due to variation of intercubane π⋯π stacking with thermal energy.

Three novel polyoxoanion-supported compounds: confinement of polyoxoanions in Ni-containing rigid concave surfaces with enhanced NLO properties

Three new polyoxometalates confined in metal-containing rigid concave surfaces were developed. All of them gave a strong third-order NLO response.
