Rhenium Alkyne Catalysis: Sterics Control the Reactivity

Metathesis reactions, including alkane, alkene, and alkyne metatheses, have their origins in the fundamental understanding of chemical reactions and the development of specialized catalysts. These reactions stand as transformative pillars in organic chemistry, providing efficient rearrangement of carbon-carbon bonds and enabling synthetic access to diverse and complex compounds. Their impact spans industries such as petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and materials science. In this work, we present a detailed mechanistic study of the Re(V) catalyzed alkyne metathesis through density functional theory calculations. Our findings are in agreement with the experimental evidence from Jia and co-workers and unveil critical factors governing catalyst performance. Our work not only enhances our understanding of alkyne metathesis but also contributes to the broader landscape of catalytic processes, facilitating the design of more efficient and selective transformations in organic synthesis.

A Metallabicycle From Thiocarbonyl-Cyclopropenium Coupling

Addition of triphenylcyclopropenium bromide to the thiocarbonyl complex [RhCl(CS)(PPh3 )2 ] affords novel bicyclic metalla-3-mercapto-thiapyrylliums [Rh(κ2 -C,S-C5 S2 Ph3 )(PPh3 )2 X2 ] (X=Cl, Br) - heterocycles with no metal-free isolobal precedent. Halide abstraction with silver triflate (AgOTf) in acetonitrile affords the salt [Rh(κ2 -C,S-C5 S2 Ph3 )(NCMe)2 (PPh3 )2 {Ag(OH2 )2 }{Ag(OTf)3 }]-OTf which in turn reacts with sodium chloride to return [Rh(κ2 -C,S-C5 S2 Ph3 )(PPh3 )2 Cl2 ].

Classifying and Understanding the Reactivities of Mo-Based Alkyne Metathesis Catalysts from 95Mo NMR Chemical Shift Descriptors

The most active alkyne metathesis catalysts rely on well-defined Mo alkylidynes, X₃Mo≡CR (X = OR), in particular the recently developed canopy catalyst family bearing silanolate ligand sets. Recent efforts to understand catalyst reactivity patterns have shown that NMR chemical shifts are powerful descriptors, though previous studies have mostly focused on ligand-based NMR descriptors. Here, we show in the context of alkyne metathesis that ⁹⁵Mo chemical shift tensors encode detailed information on the electronic structure of these catalysts. Analysis by first-principles calculations of ⁹⁵Mo chemical shift tensors extracted from solid-state ⁹⁵Mo NMR spectra shows a direct link of chemical shift values with the energies of the HOMO and LUMO, two molecular orbitals involved in the key [2 + 2]-cycloaddition step, thus linking ⁹⁵Mo chemical shifts to reactivity. In particular, the ⁹⁵Mo chemical shifts are driven by ligand electronegativity (σ-donation) and electron delocalization through Mo-O π interactions, thus explaining the reactivity patterns of the silanolate canopy catalysts. These results further motivate exploration of transition metal NMR signatures and their relationships to electronic structure and reactivity.

Alkyne Metathesis with d2 Re(V) Alkylidyne Complexes Supported by Phosphino-Phenolates: Ligand Effect on Catalytic Activity and Applications in Ring-Closing Alkyne Metathesis

A family of d² Re(V) alkylidyne complexes bearing two decorated phosphino-phenolates (POs) and a labile pyridine ligand were prepared that can efficiently promote alkyne metathesis reactions in toluene. The relative activity of these complexes varies with the PO ligands. Complexes with an electron-rich metal center have a higher activity. Ligand exchange experiments suggest that the pyridine ligands of the Re(V) alkylidynes with more electron-donating PO ligands are more labile and are more easily released to generate catalytically active species. However, complexes with electron-withdrawing PO ligands are more air-stable than those with electron-donating PO ligands. These Re(V) alkylidyne catalysts can promote the homometathesis of functionalized internal alkyl- and aryl-alkynes, as well as ring-closing alkyne metathesis (RCAM) of methyl-capped diynes, forming macrocycles with a ring size ≥12 efficiently for concentrations ≤5 mM. These reactions represent the first examples of RCAM mediated by non-d⁰ alkylidyne complexes. The Re(V) alkylidyne catalysts tolerate a wide range of functional groups including ethers, esters, ketones, aldehydes, alcohols, phenols, amines, amides, and heterocycles. Moreover, the catalytic RCAM reactions promoted by robust Re(V) alkylidyne catalysts could also proceed normally in wet toluene.

Deoxygenation reactions in organic synthesis catalyzed by dioxomolybdenum(VI) complexes

Dioxomolybdenum(VI) complexes have been applied as efficient, inexpensive and benign catalysts to deoxygenation reactions of a diverse number of compounds in the last two decades. Dioxomolybdenum complexes have demonstrated wide applicability to the deoxygenation of sulfoxides into sulfides and reduction of N-O bonds. Even the challenging nitro functional group was efficiently deoxygenated, affording amines or diverse heterocycles after reductive cyclization reactions. More recently, carbon-based substrates like epoxides, alcohols and ketones have been successfully deoxygenated. Also, dioxomolybdenum complexes accomplished deoxydehydration (DODH) reactions of biomass-derived vicinal 1,2-diols, affording valuable alkenes. The choice of the catalytic systems and reductant is decisive to achieve the desired transformation. Commonly found reducing agents involved phosphorous-based compounds, silanes, molecular hydrogen, or even glycols and other alcohols.

Benzyne addition to a metal-carbon multiple bond

The linear μ-carbido complex [Rh2(μ-C)Cl2(dppm)2] (dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane) reacts with a benzyne equivalent (Me3SiC6H4OTf-2/F-) to afford [Rh2(μ-CC6H4)(μ-Cl)(C6H5)Cl2(μ-dppm)2], in which the benzyne moiety adds across one of the two metal-carbon double bonds.

Recent Advances in the Reactions of Cyclic Carbynes

The acyclic organic alkynes and carbyne bonds exhibit linear shapes. Metallabenzynes and metallapentalynes are six- or five-membered metallacycles containing carbynes, whose carbine-carbon bond angles are less than 180°. Such distortion results in considerable ring strain, resulting in the unprecedented reactivity compared with acyclic carbynes. Meanwhile, the aromaticity of these metallacycles would stabilize the ring system. The fascinating combination of ring strain and aromaticity would lead to interesting reactivities. This mini review summarized recent findings on the reactivity of the metal-carbon triple bonds and the aromatic ring system. In the case of metallabenzynes, aromaticity would prevail over ring strain. The reactions are similar to those of organic aromatics, especially in electrophilic reactions. Meanwhile, fragmentation of metallacarbynes might be observed via migratory insertion if the aromaticity of metallacarbynes is strongly affected. In the case of metallapentalynes, the extremely small bond angle would result in high reactivity of the carbyne moiety, which would undergo typical reactions for organic alkynes, including interaction with coinage metal complexes, electrophilic reactions, nucleophilic reactions and cycloaddition reactions, whereas the strong aromaticity ensured the integrity of the bicyclic framework of metallapentalynes throughout all reported reaction conditions.

Metallaaromatic Chemistry: History and Development

Since the prediction of the existence of metallabenzenes in 1979, metallaaromatic chemistry has developed rapidly, due to its importance in both experimental and theoretical fields. Now six major types of metallaromatic compounds, metallabenzenes, metallabenzynes, heterometallaaromatics, dianion metalloles, metallapentalenes and metallapentalynes (also termed carbolongs), and spiro metalloles, have been reported and extensively studied. Their parent organic analogues may be aromatic, non-aromatic, or even anti-aromatic. These unique systems not only enrich the large family of aromatics, but they also broaden our understanding and extend the concept of aromaticity. This review provides a comprehensive overview of metallaaromatic chemistry. We have focused on not only the six major classes of metallaaromatics, including the main-group-metal-based metallaaromatics, but also other types, such as metallacyclobutadienes and metallacyclopropenes. The structures, synthetic methods, and reactivities are described, their applications are covered, and the challenges and future prospects of the area are discussed. The criteria commonly used to judge the aromaticity of metallaaromatics are presented.

Formation of alkyne-bridged ferrocenophanes using ring-closing alkyne metathesis on 1,1'-diacetylenic ferrocenes

Novel alkyne-bridged ferrocenophanes [fc{CO2(CH2) n C≡}2] (2a: n = 2; 2b: n = 3) were synthesized from the corresponding terminal diacetylenic ferrocenes [fc{CO2(CH2) n C≡CH}2] (1a: n = 2; 1b: n = 3) through ring-closing alkyne metathesis (RCAM) utilizing the highly effective molybdenum catalyst [MesC≡Mo{OC(CF3)2CH3}3] (MoF6; Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl). The metathesis reaction occurs in short time with high yields whilst giving full conversion of the terminal alkynes. Furthermore, the solvent-dependant reactivity of 2a towards Ag(SbF6) is investigated, leading to oxidation and formation of the ferrocenium hexafluoroantimonate 4 in dichloromethane, whereas the silver(I) coordination polymer 5 was isolated from THF solution.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Adducts of Main Group Elements and Their Use as Ligands in Transition Metal Chemistry

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) are nowadays ubiquitous and indispensable in many research fields, and it is not possible to imagine modern transition metal and main group element chemistry without the plethora of available NHCs with tailor-made electronic and steric properties. While their suitability to act as strong ligands toward transition metals has led to numerous applications of NHC complexes in homogeneous catalysis, their strong σ-donating and adaptable π-accepting abilities have also contributed to an impressive vitalization of main group chemistry with the isolation and characterization of NHC adducts of almost any element. Formally, NHC coordination to Lewis acids affords a transfer of nucleophilicity from the carbene carbon atom to the attached exocyclic moiety, and low-valent and low-coordinate adducts of the p-block elements with available lone pairs and/or polarized carbon-element π-bonds are able to act themselves as Lewis basic donor ligands toward transition metals. Accordingly, the availability of a large number of novel NHC adducts has not only produced new varieties of already existing ligand classes but has also allowed establishment of numerous complexes with unusual and often unprecedented element-metal bonds. This review aims at summarizing this development comprehensively and covers the usage of N-heterocyclic carbene adducts of the p-block elements as ligands in transition metal chemistry.

Ring Rearrangement Metathesis in 7-Oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptene (7-Oxanorbornene) Derivatives. Some Applications in Natural Product Chemistry

Metathesis reactions is firmly established as a valuable synthetic tool in organic chemistry, clearly comparable with the venerable Diels-Alder and Wittig reactions and, more recently, with the metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Metathesis reactions can be considered as a fascinating synthetic methodology, allowing different variants regarding substrate (alkene and alkyne metathesis) and type of metathetical reactions. On the other hand, tandem metathesis reactions such Ring Rearrangement Metathesis (RRM) and the coupling of metathesis reaction with other reactions of alkenes such as Diels-Alder or Heck reactions, makes metathesis one of the most powerful and reliable synthetic procedure.

In particular, Ring-Rearrangement Metathesis (RRM) refers to the combination of several metathesis transformations into a domino process such as ring-opening metathesis (ROM)/ring-closing metathesis (RCM) and ROM-cross metathesis (CM) in a one-pot operation. RRM delivers complex frameworks that are difficult to assemble by conventional methods constitutingan atom economic process. RRM is applicable to mono- and polycyclic systems of varying ring sizes such as cyclopropene, cyclobutene, cyclopentene, cyclohexene, pyran systems, bicyclo[2.2.1]heptene derivatives, bicyclo[2.2.2]octene derivatives, bicyclo[3.2.1]octene derivatives and bicyclo[3.2.1]octene derivatives.

In this review our attention has focused on the RRM reactions in 7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptene derivatives and on their application in the synthesis of natural products or significant subunits of them.

Formation of paramagnetic metallacyclobutadienes by reaction of diaminoacetylenes with molybdenum alkylidyne complexes

The reactions of the molybdenum alkylidyne complex [MesCMo{OCMe(CF₃)₂}₃] with the diaminoacetylenes R₂NCCNR₂ (NR₂ = 4-methylpiperidinyl, NEt₂; Mes = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) afforded paramagnetic metallacyclobutadiene (MCBD) complexes with diaminodicarbene ligands.

Alkyne Metathesis with Silica-Supported and Molecular Catalysts at Parts-per-Million Loadings

Improvement of the activity, stability, and chemoselectivity of alkyne-metathesis catalysts is necessary before this promising methodology can become a routine method to construct C≡C triple bonds. Herein, we show that grafting of the known molecular catalyst [MesC≡Mo(OtBu_F6 )₃ ] (1, Mes=2,4,6-trimethylphenyl, OtBu_F6 =hexafluoro-tert-butoxy) onto partially dehydroxylated silica gave a well-defined silica-supported active alkyne-metathesis catalyst [(≡SiO)Mo(≡CMes)(OtBu_F6 )₂ ] (1/SiO_2-700 ). Both 1 and 1/SiO_2-700 showed very high activity, selectivity, and stability in the self-metathesis of a variety of carefully purified alkynes, even at parts-per-million catalyst loadings. Remarkably, the lower turnover frequencies observed for 1/SiO_2-700 by comparison to 1 do not prevent the achievement of high turnover numbers. We attribute the lower reactivity of 1/SiO_2-700 to the rigidity of the surface Mo species owing to the strong interaction of the metal site with the silica surface.

Photochemistry of a Puckered Ferracyclobutadiene in Liquid Solution Studied by Time-Resolved Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy

Flash photolysis combined with step-scan and rapid-scan Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was carried out to explore the photochemistry of a puckered, quasi-square pyramidal ferracyclobutadiene, [Fe{κ(2) -C3 (NEt2 )3 }(CO)3 ]BF4 ([1]BF4 ), that features three additional carbonyl ligands in the metal coordination sphere. In liquid solution at room temperature, an excitation with λ=355 nm light resulted in the loss of one CO ligand, which is cleaved from a basal metal-coordination site. Within the time resolution of the experiment, a solvent molecule promptly refills the resultant vacancy at the coordinatively unsaturated metal center. In the weakly interacting liquid, dichloromethane, the counterion of the complex is subsequently able to substitute the solvent in the coordination sphere of the iron center, thereby forming as a stable product a neutral dicarbonyl tetrafluoroborato iron(0) species containing a four-membered ferracycle.
