Abstract
Two novel ionic red/near-infrared Ir(III) complexes (Ir1 and Ir2) were reasonably designed and prepared using 2-(1-isoquinolinyl)-9,10-anthraquinone as the main ligand and 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl and 4,4'-dimethoxy-2,2'-bipyridyl as the auxiliary ligands, respectively. Both complexes showed bright phosphorescence in solution (peak at 618 nm with a shoulder at 670 nm). Interestingly, the phosphorescence peak of two Ir(III) complexes showed a blue-shift of about 36 nm after being ground. Simultaneously, both complexes exhibited mechanical force-induced enhanced emission, and the intensity of the luminescence for Ir1 and Ir2 increased by around two times compared to the one before being ground, respectively. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculation were utilized to understand well the mechanism of this phenomenon and suggested that the destruction of the well-ordered crystalline nature and the decline in triplet-triplet annihilation maybe responsible for the pressure-induced blue-shift and the enhancement of the phosphorescence.

Abstract
Solid-state systems composed of chalconoid encapsulated within p-sulfonatocalix[6]arene (SCX6) scaffolds that exhibit mechanochromism and thermochromism have been developed. An introduction of a supramolecular host promises a variety of applications in diverse areas, which makes them fascinating. Largely hydrogen bonding as well as π···π interactions are responsible for the host-guest complexation. The complex shows partial encapsulation of the guest with one of the phenyl rings of chalcone (guest) is held inside the SCX6 cavity, whilst other phenyl rings that exclude the cavity are hydrogen-bonded to sulfonate portals of the host. The hydrogen bonding conducing such complexation triggers proton transfer engendering a mechanochromic switch. The complexes are further characterized by a variety of experiments such as cyclic voltammetry (CV), steady-state fluorescence, vibrational spectroscopy, and 1H or 2D NMR (NOESY) spectroscopy experiments. Detailed structure furnished through the NMR shows deshielding of the Ha-e (guest) protons whereas, the hydroxyl protons from the host experience shielding as evidenced from the 1H NMR spectra. These inferences have further been corroborated through the density functional theory. Electrochemical investigations suggested an irreversible one-electron transfer in the host-guest binding. The characteristic 'frequency shift' for the intense carbonyl vibration in the infrared spectra, which can be correlated to the kinetic energy density parameter, G(r), in the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM).

Abstract
Luminescent security printing is of particular importance in the information era. However, the use of conventional paper still carries a lot of economic and environmental issues. Therefore, developing new environmentally friendly security printing material with a low cost is imperative. To achieve the aforementioned goals, novel lanthanide polyoxometalate doped gelatin/glycerol films with high transparency, high strength, and good flexibility have been developed via a solution-casting method. The electrostatic interaction between zwitterionic gelatin and polyoxometalate was confirmed by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Luminescent spectra and digital images indicated that the films exhibited reversible luminescent switching properties through association and dissociation of hydrogen bonds between glycerol and water molecules, allowing its potential application as water-jet rewritable paper for luminescent security printing. Furthermore, the printed information can be conveniently "erased" by heating, and the film can be reused for printing. The film exhibited excellent ability to be both rewritten and re-erased. A QR code pattern and hybrid printing were employed to improve the security of information. In addition, the rewritable films possessed excellent regeneration ability and low toxicity, as well as good stability against UV irradiation and organic solvents. The water-jet rewritable film based on lanthanide polyoxometalate for luminescent security printing, to the best of our knowledge, has not yet been reported up to date. This work provides an attractive alternative strategy on fabricating rewritable films for luminescent security printing in terms of cutting down the cost, simplifying the preparation process, and protecting the environment.

Abstract
A practicable strategy to a reversible mechanochromic material featuring interconversion of classical/frustrated Brönsted pairs has been established. We report the mechanochromic property of 2,6-bis(4-biphenyl)isonicotinic acid (1), which features a frustrated Brönsted pair in the crystalline form and a classical Brönsted pair after grinding. A large mechanochromic shift was found from 428 to 505 nm. In addition, compound 1 also exhibits acidochromic behavior, which further proves that the formation of an acid-base interaction is responsible for the mechanochromic phenomenon.

Abstract
Rewritable paper is meaningful to the recyclable and sustainable utilization of environmental resources and thus has been extensively investigated for several decades. In this work, we demonstrated an efficient and convenient strategy to fabricate rewritable paper based on reversible hydrochromism of donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs). The kinetics and efficiency of isomerization could be well-controlled by adjusting the surrounding temperature and humidity. Monocolored rewritable paper was prepared by coating cyclic DASA·xH2O on the paper surface. Writing, printing, stamping and patterning were realized on the rewritable paper. The information could be controllably erased by treatment in a humid atmosphere. More importantly, the rewritable paper was upgraded to multicolored by combination of two DASA materials. The color of chirography was switched by controlling the writing speed.

Abstract
ConspectusStimuli-responsive materials have a great potential in various novel photoelectric devices, such as self-adaptive adjustment devices, intelligent detection, molecular computers with information storage capability, camouflage and anticounterfeiting display, various energy-saving displays, and others. However, progress in related areas has been relatively slow because of the lack of high-performance smart materials and the limitations of available reaction mechanisms currently. To address these problems fundamentally, new mechanisms need to be designed and developed, and learning from nature is an effective and intelligent method to achieve this long-awaited target, such as mimicking of proton transfer processes in nature at the molecular/supramolecular level. The stimuli-induced reversible proton transfer system is composed of materials that release or capture protons in response to stimuli and switch molecules that control color and/or fluorescence modulation by protons, and it is applied in stimuli-responsive materials and devices, including bistable electronic/electrochromic devices, electrofluorochromic devices, water-jet rewritable paper, visible-light-responsive rewritable paper, and mechanochromic materials. To help researchers gain deep insight into stimuli-induced reversible proton transfer, we attempted to summarize its reaction mechanism and design principle, and discuss strategies to design and prepare various related stimuli-responsive materials and devices. This Account discusses the different systems in which a color/fluorescence change is induced by the proton transfer process under various stimuli, including electric field, water, light, heat, and stress. Relative very promising applications as well as their performance especially for energy-saving and environmentally friendly devices are then summarized, such as energy-saving bistable electrochromic devices, water-jet rewritable paper, and visible-light-responsive rewritable paper. Meanwhile, we focus on the key influence factors and useful additives for improving the device's performance. At last, challenges and bottlenecks faced by stimuli-responsive materials and devices based on the mechanism of reversible proton transfer are proposed. Moreover, we put forward some suggestions on solving these limitations. These exciting results reveal that smart materials based on the mechanism of proton transfer are extremely attractive and possess great potential in the next generation of energy and resource saving and environmental protection display. We hope that this Account further prospers the field of intelligent stimuli-responsive discoloration materials and next-generation green displays.

Abstract
Paper, for writing and printing, is consumed a lot in modern life. However, the production of conventional paper could cause many problems, such as deforestation and environmental pollution. Therefore, it is necessary and urgent to explore novel strategies to solve these problems. In this work, a polyoxometalate-doped gelatin film with high strength, excellent transparency, and fast photochromic properties is designed and prepared. The film can display different colors by using a variety of reagents, exhibiting its potential application as a paper medium. Its rapid photochromic properties allow complex high-resolution images to be displayed by UV light printing. It is found that the mechanical and photochromic properties could be regulated by the introduction of triethylene glycol, and the fading process could be controlled by changing the temperature and humidity. Moreover, it is rewritable, self-repairable, and recyclable, and can also achieve long-term preservation without fading. It is envisioned that the environmentally friendly films with low cost, ease of preparation, and recycling advantages have the potential to be an alternative to conventional paper for writing and printing.

Abstract
A new twisted donor–acceptor (D–A) dye (BF2-TP) that was composed of tetraphenylethene and pyrene connected with a β-diketonate boron moiety has been synthesized and characterized. Such a dye showed unique intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) features, which were evidenced by spectral analysis and theoretical calculations. More importantly, BF2-TP solid samples exhibited an obvious mechanofluorochromic (MFC) behavior. Upon grinding with a spatula, the as-prepared powder sample illustrated a remarkable red shift of 62 nm, with considerable color contrast from yellow (562 nm) to orange red (624 nm). Its fluorescence color can be reversibly switched by repeating both the grinding–fuming and grinding–annealing processes. The mechanochromism is attributed to the phase transformation between amorphous and crystalline states. The results obtained would be helpful for designing novel MFC materials. A new twisted dye (BF2-TP) was synthesized, it possesses distinct mechanofluorochromism with large spectral shift of 62 nm.![]()

Abstract
The colour of water-jet rewritable paper (WJRP) is difficult to be expanded via single hydrochromic molecule, especially black. Here, inspired by the amazing phenomenon of bound-water in cells enabling various biological transformations via facilitating synergistic inter-/intra-molecular proton transfer, we present a simple strategy toward WJRP based on binary systems containing less-sensitive acidochromic dyes and mild proton donors (or developers). With such a binary system containing commercial black dye as the colouring agent, benzyl 4-hydroxybenzoate as the developer, and biomimetic bound-water as proton-transferring medium, we successfully achieve the long-awaited black WJRP. Printed images on such WJRP have excellent performances and long retaining time (>1 month). In addition, the robustness, durability and reversibility of WJRP could be increased distinctly by using polyethylene terephthalate as substrate. This strategy significantly expands hydrochromic colours to entire visible range in an eco-friendly way, which opens an avenue of smart materials for practical needs and industrialization. Water based inks used for water-jet rewritable paper (WJRP) are an environmental friendly alternative to conventional printing, but black colour in WJRP could not be realized so far. Here the authors demonstrate black as well as other colour WJRP based on binary systems containing less-sensitive acidochromic dyes and mild proton donors.

Abstract
"Paper" has greatly contributed to the development and spread of civilization. Even in today's "digitalized" world, paper continues to play a key role in socioeconomic growth, as is evidenced by the growth in global paper consumption. Unfortunately, the use of paper has its cost in terms of the exhaustion of world's natural resources. Consequently, new, cost-effective technologies that preserve natural resources are required for this purpose. Functional materials have revolutionized the way people think about developing new technologies. Especially important in this regard are "smart reactive materials," which are capable of actively responding to external stimuli such as heat, light, mechanical stress, and specific molecular orientations. Moreover, functionalized chromogenic materials, which undergo reversible color switching upon external stimulation, have attracted great attention in the context of developing rewritable paper. Here, investigations of various materials and systems that are devised for use as rewritable paper are reviewed with the hope that the coverage will stimulate and guide future studies in this area.

Abstract
Molecular switches have attracted increasing interest in the past decades, due to their broad applications in data storage, optical gating, smart windows, and so on. However, up till now, most of the molecular switches are operated in solutions or polymer blends with the stimuli of light, heat, and electric fields. Herein, we demonstrate the first pressure-controllable molecular switch of a benzo[1,3]oxazine OX-1 in crystal. Distinct from the light-triggered tautomerization between two optical states, applying hydrostatic pressure on the OX-1 crystal results in large-scale and continuous states across the whole visible light range (from ∼430 to ∼700 nm), which has not been achieved with other stimuli. Based on detailed and systematic control experiments and theoretical calculation, the preliminary requirements and mechanism of pressure-dependent tautomerization are fully discussed. The contributions of molecular tautomerization to the large-scale optical modulation are also stressed. Finally, the importance of studying pressure-responsive materials on understanding tactile sensing is also discussed and a possible mechanotransduction mode is proposed.
