Abstract
Non-invasive and passive detection of explosives in the vapor phase is advantageous for military, counter-terrorism, and homeland security applications. Detection of explosives using SERS has been an active research topic. However, the vapor pressures of most explosives are low at room temperature, and consequently, the vapor phase detection by SERS is highly challenging without intentionally heating explosive powder to increase the vapor pressure. In this work, we report the rapid and sensitive detection of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) in the vapor phase, using a gold nanogap (AuNG) SERS substrate. The AuNG SERS substrate was fabricated with electron beam evaporation, rapid thermal annealing, and wet etching. SERS measurements were carried out with an incident power as low as 0.56 mW at 785 nm. To prevent the condensation effect, the TNT and 2,4-DNT powders inside the cuvette were taken out before inserting the nanogap substrate. Our SERS results demonstrate the feasibility of the non-invasive detection of vapor phase explosives under ambient conditions.

Abstract
Carbon dots (CDs), a new zero-dimensional material, have ignited a revolution in the fields of sensing, bioimaging, and biomedicine. However, the difficulty of preparing CDs with Fenton-like catalytic properties has seriously hindered their application in the diagnosis of oxidation/reduction biomolecules or metal ions. Here, an innovative method was successfully established to synthesize Mn3+/Mn4+ ion-doped blue-green fluorescent CDs with Fenton-like catalytic properties using manganese acetate as the manganese source. Specifically, the CDs prepared here were equipped with functional groups of -COOH, NH2, C=O, and Mn-O, offering the possibility to function as a fluorescence sensor. More importantly, the introduction of manganese acetate resulted in the preparation of CDs with Fenton-like catalytic properties, and the dual-signal fluorescence detection of dopamine (DA) was realized with linear ranges of 100–275 nM and 325–525 nM, and the detection limits were 3 and 12 nM, respectively. In addition, due to the Fenton-like catalytic activity of Mn3+/Mn4+ ion-doped CDs, the material has broad application prospects in the detection of oxidation/reduction biomolecules or metal ions related to disease diagnosis and prevention.

Abstract
An approximately monochromatic red upconversion (UC) emission is successfully realized in NaScF4: Yb3+/Er3+ nanoparticles (NPs) through Mn2+ ions doping without phase transition. The Mn2+ ions play a role of bridge during the energy transfer process from green emission state 2H11/2/4S3/2 of Er3+ to red emission state 4F9/2 of Er3+, which significantly accelerates the red UC enhancement. The strongest red luminescence is observed in the sample containing 10% Mn2+ ions (Mn-10) with an enhancement factor of 7.5 times. Meanwhile, an ultrasensitive optical thermometry in the physiological temperature region can be realized by utilizing the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) between two thermally coupled Stark transitions of Er3+: 4I13/2 → 4I15/2, locating in the near-infrared (NIR) long wavelength region of the second biological window. Its relative sensitivity SR can be expressed by 340/T2, which is much higher than most optical thermometers based on thermally coupled Stark sublevels reported by the previous papers. Beyond that, an ex vivo experiment is designed to evaluate the penetration depth of the red and NIR emission of Mn-10 in the biological tissues, revealing that they can reach depth of at least 3 mm and 5 mm respectively. More importantly, the increasing tissue thickness has almost no effect on the FIR values. All the results show that the present sample is a promising bi-functional nano probe which can be used for bioimaging and temperature sensing in the deep tissues through the strong red UC emission and ultrasensitive NIR optical thermometer, respectively.

Abstract
Plasmonic metal nanostructures offer the unique ability to effectively enhance sunlight harvesting by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), which can induce direct photocatalytic reactions. However, only metal nanoparticles with a relatively low magnitude of electromagnetic field enhancement usually require a high illumination intensity to ensure the catalytic performance, which greatly limits the solar photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, we designed plasmonic Au nanoparticle film with high electromagnetic field enhancement to achieve high-efficiency catalytic activity under low-power NIR light illumination. This work minimized the influence of the photothermal effect on the reaction by using a low illumination intensity and further revealed the main contribution of plasmon-excited hot electrons to the photochemical reaction. This study provides important insights into the study of the mechanism of LSPR in photocatalytic reactions and further improves the efficiency of solar energy utilization.

Abstract
Rapid, reliable, onsite approaches for detection trace level of trinitrotoluene (TNT) is a pressing necessity for both homeland security and environmental protection. To this end, hydrophilic amine(-NH2) protected Au@Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were developed and fabricated as colorimetric paper sensor for delicate detection of TNT. The as-developed nanoprobe selectively reacts with TNT through classic Meisenheimer complex formation by means of charge transfer process from an electron-rich NH2 group of β-cysteamine to an electron-deficient nitro group on TNT. Due to the absence of this particular interaction of other nitroaromatics, the proposed probe is highly selective for TNT detection with a better linear range (0-20 μg/mL) and limit of detection (LOD) of 0.35 μg/mL. The present work provides a novel and facile strategy to fabricate colorimetric paper sensors with rapid and selective recognition ability for label free analysis of TNT.

Abstract
Multi-modality in vivo bioimaging has great renown for offering more comprehensive information in medical diagnosis and research. Incorporating different bioimaging capabilities into one biocompatible nanoprobe requires an elegant structural design. Considering optical and magnetic properties, X-ray absorption ability, and clinical safety, we prepared a water-soluble and upconverting PSIoAm-modified Sr2Yb0.3Gd0.7F7:Er3+/Tm3+ bio-probe that not only had high photostability and excellent cell membrane permeability, but could also distinguish the four types of cancer cells and normal cells tested within the scope of our study. What's more, it could realize the in vivo trimodality imaging of upconversion fluorescence, X-ray computed tomography and magnetic resonance. The histological analysis of visceral sections further demonstrated that the multifunctional bio-probe was highly safe, which could be applied to clinical diagnosis.

Abstract
A new aptamer-based surface plasmon resonance (SPR) system has been designed to detect Hg2+ that utilizes near-infrared (NIR)-to-NIR gold nanoparticle coated NaYF4:Yb,Tm,Gd up-conversion nanoparticles (AuNPs@NaYF4:Yb,Tm,Gd UCNPs) as probes. The AuNPs@NaYF4:Yb,Tm,Gd UCNPs were prepared and excited by near-infrared light (980 nm) which emitted at a near-infrared wavelength (808 nm) using an inexpensive infrared continuous wave laser diode. The AuNPs@NaYF4:Yb,Tm,Gd UCNPs were conjugated with Hg2+ aptamers. In the presence of Hg2+, the AuNPs@NaYF4:Yb,Tm,Gd UCNPs were brought into close proximity because of the formation of T-Hg2+-T base pairs. Then the luminescence enhanced because of the plasmon resonance effects. Based on this, a new SPR system was developed for the detection of Hg2+ that had high sensitivity and selectivity in the NIR region. This method was successfully applied to detect Hg2+ concentration in real samples.

Abstract
Two luminescent cyclometalated Pt(II)-complexes, 1•Pt and 2•Pt, respectively, were synthesized by using unsymmetrical C∧N∧N ligands having different alkyl substituents. These π-electron-rich complexes are used for sensing various electron deficient nitroaromatic explosives, e.g., 4-nitrotoluene (NT), 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP), in aqueous, nonaqueous, as well as in the solid state as a paper strip with maximum detection limit of ca. 10-9 M. It was demonstrated that the sparingly soluble 2•Pt complex becomes water-soluble in the presence of all kinds of surfactants, viz., cationic (e.g., cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB), anionic (e.g., sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS), and neutral (e.g., Triton X-100). This may be due to the incorporation of its long lyophilic tail group (-C12H25) inside the micellar core, exposing planar Pt(II)C∧N∧N headgroup to the aqueous bulk phase. It was also observed that the extent of solubility of these Pt(II)-complexes in micellar media strongly depends on the length of the existing alkyl chain. For instance, the presence of longer dodecyl chain makes 2•Pt complex ca. 1000-fold more soluble than the complex 1•Pt, which contains a shorter propyl chain. Their sensing behavior essentially arises by the quenching of Pt(II)-based intense luminescence due to the supramolecular charge transfer (CT) process originating from Pt(II)C∧N∧N-antenna to the electron deficient nitroaromatic explosives. Our present work shows that the micellar adducts formed by highly luminophoric material and surfactant molecules could effectively detect such explosives in aqueous medium with better sensitivity compared to what were observed in other media.

Abstract
A novel method of fabricating water-soluble bio-probes with ultra-small size such as NaYF4:Yb,Er (18 nm), NaGdF4:Yb,Er (8 nm), CaF2:Yb,Er (10 nm), PbS (7 nm), and ZnS (12 nm) has been developed to provide for the solubility switch of nanoparticles from oil-soluble to water-soluble in terms of hydrion rivalry aided by ultrasonic. Using NaYF4:Yb,Er (18 nm) as an example, we evaluate the properties of as-prepared water-soluble nanoparticles (NPs) by using thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), zeta potential (ζ) testing, and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR). The measured ζ value shows that the newly prepared hydrophilic NaYF4:Yb,Er NPs are the positively charged particles. Acting as reactive electrophilic moiety, the freshly prepared hydrophilic NaYF4:Yb,Er NPs have carried out the coupling with amino acids and fluorescence labeling and imaging of HeLa cells directly. Experiments indicate that the method of hydrion rivalry aided by ultrasonic provides a simple and novel opportunity to transform hydrophobic NPs into hydrophilic NPs with good reactivity, which can be imaging some specific biological targets directly.

Abstract
Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), which can emit ultraviolet/visible (UV/Vis) light under near-infrared (NIR) excitation, are regarded as a new generation of nanoprobes because of their unique optical properties, including a virtually zero auto-fluorescence background for the improved signal-to-noise ratio, narrow emission bandwidths and high resistance to photo-bleaching.

Abstract
We report a highly efficient photocatalyst comprised of Cu7S4@Pd heteronanostructures with plasmonic absorption in the near-infrared (NIR)-range. Our results indicated that the strong NIR plasmonic absorption of Cu7S4@Pd facilitated hot carrier transfer from Cu7S4 to Pd, which subsequently promoted the catalytic reactions on Pd metallic surface. We confirmed such enhancement mechanism could effectively boost the sunlight utilization in a wide range of photocatalytic reactions, including the Suzuki coupling reaction, hydrogenation of nitrobenzene, and oxidation of benzyl alcohol. Even under irradiation at 1500 nm with low power density (0.45 W/cm(2)), these heteronanostructures demonstrated excellent catalytic activities. Under solar illumination with power density as low as 40 mW/cm(2), nearly 80-100% of conversion was achieved within 2 h for all three types of organic reactions. Furthermore, recycling experiments showed the Cu7S4@Pd were stable and could retain their structures and high activity after five cycles. The reported synthetic protocol can be easily extended to other Cu7S4@M (M = Pt, Ag, Au) catalysts, offering a new solution to design and fabricate highly effective photocatalysts with broad material choices for efficient conversion of solar energy to chemical energy in an environmentally friendly manner.

Abstract
Novel flower-like α-NaYb(Mn)F4:Er(3+)/Tm(3+)@NaYF4 upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as luminescent nanothermometers have been developed by combining liquid-solid solution hydrothermal strategy with thermal decomposition strategy. Under 980 nm excitation, they exhibit intense upconversion luminescence and temperature-dependent upconversion luminescence over a wide temperature range. The influence of temperature on "band-shape" upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra and the intensity of emission bands are analyzed and discussed in detail. We further successfully test and verify that intensity ratios REr of (2)H11/2 → (4)I15/2 and (4)S3/2 → (4)I15/2 and RTm of (1)G4 → (3)H5 and (3)H4 → (3)H6 are sensitive to temperature, and the population of active ions follows Boltzmann-type population distribution very well. These luminescent nanothermometers could be applied over a wide temperature range from 123 to 423 K with high sensitivity, which enable them to be excellent candidates for temperature sensors.

Abstract
2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene (TNT) forms a red-colored Meisenheimer complex with 3-aminopropyltrenthoxysilane (APTES) both in solution and on solid phase. The TNT-APTES complex is unique since it forms yellow-colored complexes with 2,4,6-trinitrophenol and 4-nitrophenol, and no complex with 2,4-dinitrotoluene. The absorption spectrum of TNT-APTES has two absorption bands at 530 and 650 nm, while APTES complexes with 2,4,6-trinitrophenol and 4-nitrophenol have absorption maxima at around 420 nm, and no absorption change for 2,4-dinitrotoluene. The TNT-APTES complex facilitates the exchange of the TNT-CH3 proton/deuteron with solvent molecules. The red color of TNT-APTES is immediately visible at 1 µM of TNT.

Abstract
Development of a rapid and effective method for the detection of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) in aqueous phase has attracted great attention. In this work, the fluorescent porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of PCN-224 were successfully exploited as a fluorescent probe for the rapid and selective TNT detection in water media. This strategy combined the advantages of fluorescent porphyrin molecules and porous MOFs, which not only overcame the aggregation of hydrophobic tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (TCPP) recognition sites but also promoted TNT to interact with recognition sites in virtue of the high surface and intrinsic open structure of MOFs. As a result, a rapid response time of as short as 30 s was obtained for the elaborated fluorescent probe. Meanwhile, the bright red emission of porphyrin units in PCN-224 could be proportionally quenched in correlation with the applied TNT level through the formation of TNT-TCPP complex in the ground state. The specificity of the employed sensory platform for TNT recognition was scarcely affected by other possible coexistent interfering species. Furthermore, this fluorescent PCN-224 probe presented a much higher quenching efficiency for TNT than other structurally similar nitroaromatic compounds and was successfully applied for the quantitative detection of TNT in the mixed nitroaromatic explosive samples. This prefigured their great potentials of practical TNT detection in water media for public safety and security.

Abstract
Upconversion nanophosphors (UCNPs) are extremely useful for analytical applications, since they display a high signal-to-noise ratio, and their photobleaching can be ignored. Herein, a novel upconversion nanocomposite composed of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) derivative modified UCNPs and rhodamine B (RB) was prepared for the detection of cholesterol (Cho). The upconversion luminescence (UCL) emission can serve as a Cho-sensing signal by an effective fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) process, using UCNPs as the donor and RB as the quencher. The sensor for Cho detection in human serum shows excellent sensitivity and selectivity, which has the potential for clinical applications in the analysis of other biological and environmental samples.

Turn-on detection of a cancer marker based on near-infrared luminescence energy transfer from NaYF4:Yb,Tm/NaGdF4 core-shell upconverting nanoparticles to gold nanorods. Abstract
A homogeneous immunoassay for the sensitive and selective determination of trace amounts of α-fetoprotein (AFP, a cancer marker) by detection in the near-infrared (NIR) region based on luminescence energy transfer (LET) from NaYF4:Yb,Tm/NaGdF4 core-shell upconverting nanoparticles to gold nanorods (GNRs) is presented. The carboxyl-functionalized NaYF4:Yb,Tm/NaGdF4 core-shell upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) were excited by a 980 nm continuous wavelength laser, and its emission peak appeared at a near-infrared wavelength (∼804 nm). The carboxyl-functionalized upconverting nanoparticles were conjugated with the anti-AFP (Ab1) and acted as donor. GNRs with a high absorption band around 790 nm, which was overlapped the UCNPs emission, were synthesized and acted as the acceptor. The donor (negatively charged) interacted with the acceptor (positively charged) via electrostatic interactions to bring them into close proximity. LET could occur, producing a quenching phenomenon. When the AFP antigens were added into the system, the binding affinity between AFP and Ab1 was stronger than the electrostatic interactions, which released the energy acceptors from the energy donors, interrupting luminescence energy transfer, and therefore, the luminescence was recovered. On the basis of the restored luminescence, a turn-on optical immunosening system was developed. Under the optimal conditions, the linear range of detection was from 0.18 to 11.44 ng/mL for AFP (R = 0.99), with a detection limit as low as 0.16 ng/mL. The proposed method has also been used to monitor AFP in human serum samples. Therefore, further study based on the NaYF4:Yb,Tm/NaGdF4 core-shell nanoparticles-GNRs construction may open the way for a new class of NIR-LET biosensors with wide applications.

Abstract
We prepared poly-L-aspartic acid (PASP) functionalized NaYF4:Yb(3+),Er(3+) upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP-PASP). These nanoparticles can give red upconversion emission under excitation at 915 nm, whose wavelength of emission and excitation is located in the optical window of biological tissue. Dynamic laser scatting and zeta potentials of UCNP-PASP were used to study their stabilities in different aqueous solution. To understand the mechanism of the red emission of UCNP-PASP, photoluminescence spectra of samples were recorded before and after modification with PASP, poly acrylic acid (PAA), and poly(ether imide) (PEI) ligands under excitation at 915 and 980 nm, respectively. The cytotoxicity of the UCNP-PASP was also examined on a A549 cell and KB cell by 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Moreover, the PASP-functionalized UCNP was employed as a potential biomarker for in vitro and in vivo experiments of upconversion luminescence imaging.
