Abstract
A series of manganese(II) and oxomanganese(IV) complexes supported by neutral, pentadentate ligands with varied equatorial ligand-field strength (N3pyQ, N2py2I, and N4pyMe2) were synthesized and then characterized using structural and spectroscopic methods. On the basis of electronic absorption spectroscopy, the [MnIV(O)(N4pyMe2)]2+ complex has the weakest equatorial ligand field among a set of similar MnIV-oxo species. In contrast, [MnIV(O)(N2py2I)]2+ shows the strongest equatorial ligand-field strength for this same series. We examined the influence of these changes in electronic structure on the reactivity of the oxomanganese(IV) complexes using hydrocarbons and thioanisole as substrates. The [MnIV(O)(N3pyQ)]2+ complex, which contains one quinoline and three pyridine donors in the equatorial plane, ranks among the fastest MnIV-oxo complexes in C-H bond and thioanisole oxidation. While a weak equatorial ligand field has been associated with high reactivity, the [MnIV(O)(N4pyMe2)]2+ complex is only a modest oxidant. Buried volume plots suggest that steric factors dampen the reactivity of this complex. Trends in reactivity were examined using density functional theory (DFT)-computed bond dissociation free energies (BDFEs) of the MnIIIO-H and MnIV ═ O bonds. We observe an excellent correlation between MnIV═O BDFEs and rates of thioanisole oxidation, but more scatter is observed between hydrocarbon oxidation rates and the MnIIIO-H BDFEs.

Abstract
Oxidative ring cleavage reactions have attracted great interest and various studies on the catechol ring-cleaving enzyme homoprotocatechuate dioxygenase (HPCD) have been reported in the literature. The available data on how the proton transfer takes place led us to design a potential HPCD model structure. A secondary sphere effect of utmost importance, the assistance of His200, which is critical for the catechol proton to migrate to dioxygen, was cautiously included on the first coordination shell. This was done mainly by modifying the axial ligands in the first coordination shell of HPCD such that the dual basic/acidic role in the proton transfer pathway of His200 was reproduced. Model systems with mono-, bi-, and tridentate ligands are reported. Energetically feasible reaction channels on synthetically promising ligand structures are identified. Key structural and electronic principles for obtaining viable proton transfer paths are outlined.

Abstract
Three new iron(II)-benzilate complexes [(N4Py)FeII (benzilate)]ClO4 (1), [(N4PyMe2 )FeII (benzilate)]ClO4 (2) and [(N4PyMe4 )FeII (benzilate)]ClO4 (3) of neutral pentadentate nitrogen donor ligands have been isolated and characterized to study their dioxygen reactivity. Single-crystal X-ray structures reveal a mononuclear six-coordinate iron(II) center in each case, where benzilate binds to the iron center in monodentate mode via one carboxylate oxygen. Introduction of methyl groups in the 6-positions of the pyridine rings makes the N4PyMe2 and N4PyMe4 ligand fields weaker compared to that of the parent N4Py ligand. All the complexes (1-3) react with dioxygen to decarboxylate the coordinated benzilate to benzophenone quantitatively. The decarboxylation is faster for the complex of the more sterically hindered ligand and follows the order 3>2>1. The complexes display oxygen atom transfer reactivity to thioanisole and also exhibit hydrogen atom transfer reactions with substrates containing weak C-H bonds. Based on interception studies with external substrates, labelling experiments and Hammett analysis, a nucleophilic iron(II)-hydroperoxo species is proposed to form upon two-electron reductive activation of dioxygen by each iron(II)-benzilate complex. The nucleophilic oxidants are converted to the corresponding electrophilic iron(IV)-oxo oxidant upon treatment with a protic acid. The high-spin iron(II)-benzilate complex with the weakest ligand field results in the formation of a more reactive iron-oxygen oxidant.

Abstract
Iron-dependent enzymes and biomimetic iron complexes can catalyze the ring cleavage of very inert, aromatic compounds. The mechanisms of these transformations and the factors that lead either to extradiol cleavage or intradiol cleavage have not been fully understood. By using density functional theory we have elucidated the mechanism of the catalytic cycle for two biomimetic complexes, and explained the difference in the experimentally obtained products.

Abstract
The synthesis, structural characterization, and reactivity of an iron(III) chloride compound of 6,6'-di(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzene)-2,2'-bipyridine (Fe(tbudhbpy)Cl), under electrochemically reducing conditions is reported. In the presence of carbon dioxide (CO2) under anhydrous conditions in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), this complex mediates the 2e- reductive disproportionation of two equivalents of CO2 to carbon monoxide (CO) and carbonate (CO32-). Upon addition of phenol (PhOH) as a proton source under CO2 saturation, catalytic current is observed; product analysis from controlled potential electrolysis experiments shows the majority product is formate (68 ± 4% Faradaic efficiency), with H2 as a minor product (30 ± 10% Faradaic efficiency) and minimal CO (1.1 ± 0.3% Faradaic efficiency). On the basis of data obtained from cyclic voltammetry and infrared spectroelectrochemistry (IR-SEC), the release of CO from intermediate Fe carbonyl species is extremely slow and undergoes competitive degradation, limiting the activity and lifetime of this catalyst. Mechanistic studies also indicate the phenolate moieties coordinated to Fe are sensitive to protonation in the reduced state, suggesting the possibility of cooperative pendent proton interactions being involved in CO2 reduction.

Abstract
The iron(II) semiquinonate character within the iron(III) catecholate species has been proposed by numerous studies to account for the O2 reactivity of intradiol catechol dioxygenases, but a well-characterized iron(II) semiquinonate species that exhibits intradiol cleaving reactivity has not yet been reported. In this study, a detailed electronic structure description of the first iron(II) o-semiquinonate complex, [PhTttBu]Fe(phenSQ) [PhTttBu = phenyltris(tert-butylthiomethyl)borate; phenSQ = 9,10-phenanthrenesemiquinonate; Wang et al. Chem. Commun. 2014, 50, 5871-5873], was generated through a combination of electronic and Mössbauer spectroscopies, SQUID magnetometry, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. [PhTttBu]Fe(phenSQ) reacts with O2 to generate an intradiol cleavage product, diphenic anhydride, in 16% yield. To assess the dependence of the intradiol reactivity on the identity of the metal ion, the nickel analogue, [PhTttBu]Ni(phenSQ), and its derivative, [PhTttBu]Ni(3,5-DBSQ) (3,5-DBSQ = 3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2-semiquinonate), were prepared and characterized by X-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry, 1H NMR and electronic spectroscopies, and SQUID magnetometry. DFT calculations, evaluated on the basis of the experimental data, support the electronic structure descriptions of [PhTttBu]Ni(phenSQ) and [PhTttBu]Ni(3,5-DBSQ) as high-spin nickel(II) complexes with antiferromagnetically coupled semiquinonate ligands. Unlike its iron counterpart, [PhTttBu]Ni(phenSQ) decomposes slowly in an O2 atmosphere to generate 14% phenanthrenequinone with a negligible amount of diphenic anhydride. [PhTttBu]Ni(3,5-DBSQ) does not react with O2. This dramatic effect of the metal-ion identity supports the hypothesis that a metal(III) alkylperoxo species serves as an intermediate in the intradiol cleaving reactions. The redox properties of all three complexes were probed using cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry, which indicate an inner-sphere electron-transfer mechanism for the formation of phenanthrenequinone. The lack of O2 reactivity of [PhTttBu]Ni(3,5-DBSQ) can be rationalized by the high redox potential of the metal-ligated 3,5-DBSQ/3,5-DBQ couple.

Abstract
The catalytic reactivity of an iron(ii) complex [(TPA)Fe(II)(CH3CN)2](2+) (1) (TPA = tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine) towards oxygenative aromatic C-C bond cleavage of catechol and 2-aminophenol is presented. Complex 1 exhibits catalytic and regioselective C-C bond cleavage of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (H2DBC) to form intradiol products, whereas it catalyzes extradiol-type C-C bond cleavage of 2-amino-4,6-di-tert-butylphenol (H2AP). The catalytic reactions are found to be pH-dependent and the complex exhibits maximum turnovers at pH 5 in acetonitrile-phthalate buffer. An iron(iii)-catecholate complex [(TPA)Fe(III)(DBC)](+) (2) is formed in the ring cleavage of catechol. In the extradiol-type cleavage of H2AP, an iron(iii)-2-iminobenzosemiquinonate complex [(TPA)Fe(III)(ISQ)](2+) (3) (ISQ = 4,6-di-tert-butyl-2-iminobenzosemiquinonate radical anion) is observed in the reaction pathway. This work shows the importance of the nature of 'redox non-innocent' substrates in governing the mode of ring fission reactivity.

Abstract
In order to address how diverse metalloprotein active sites, in particular those containing iron and copper, guide O₂binding and activation processes to perform diverse functions, studies of synthetic models of the active sites have been performed. These studies have led to deep, fundamental chemical insights into how O₂coordinates to mono- and multinuclear Fe and Cu centers and is reduced to superoxo, peroxo, hydroperoxo, and, after O-O bond scission, oxo species relevant to proposed intermediates in catalysis. Recent advances in understanding the various factors that influence the course of O₂activation by Fe and Cu complexes are surveyed, with an emphasis on evaluating the structure, bonding, and reactivity of intermediates involved. The discussion is guided by an overarching mechanistic paradigm, with differences in detail due to the involvement of disparate metal ions, nuclearities, geometries, and supporting ligands providing a rich tapestry of reaction pathways by which O₂is activated at Fe and Cu sites.
