Abstract
Tetranuclear [2 × 2] square-grid-like LnIII clusters have been synthesized by reacting LnCl3·6H2O salts with bis[α-hydroxy(p-bromophenyl)methyl]phosphinic acid [R2PO2H, where R = CH(OH)PhBr] and pivalic acid. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies show the formation of [Me4N]2[Ln4(μ2-η1:η1-PO2R2)8(η2-CO2But)4(μ4-CO3)] [Ln = Er (1), Dy (2), and Tb (3)]. Direct-current studies reveal significant ferromagnetic interactions between DyIII in 2 and TbIII in 3 and an antiferromagnetic interaction between ErIII in 1. Dynamic magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm a single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior in both 0 and 1200 Oe applied magnetic fields for 2. Complexes 2 and 3 show single molecular toroic (SMT) behavior with a mixed magnetic moment.

Abstract

A new synthetic method
allows isolating fluoride-bridged complexes
Bu4N{[M(3NO2,5Br-H3L1,1,4)]2(μ-F)} (M = Dy, 1; M = Ho, 2; M = Gd, 3) and Bu4N{[Dy(3Br,5Cl-H3L1,2,4)]2(μ-F)}·2H2O, 4·2H2O. The crystal structures of 1·5CH3C6H5,·2·2H2O·0.75THF, 3, and 4·2H2O·2THF show that all of them are
dinuclear compounds with linear single fluoride bridges and octacoordinated
metal centers. Magnetic susceptibility measurements in the temperature
range of 2–300 K reveal that the GdIII ions in 3 are weakly antiferromagnetically coupled, and this constitutes
the first crystallographically and magnetically analyzed gadolinium
complex with a fluoride bridge. Variable-temperature magnetization
demonstrates a poor magnetocaloric effect for 3. Alternating
current magnetic measurements for 1, 2,
and 4·2H2O bring to light that 4·2H2O is an SMM, 1 shows an
SMM-like behavior under a magnetic field of 600 Oe, while 2 does not show relaxation of the magnetization even under an applied
magnetic field. In spite of this, 2 is the first fluoride-bridged
holmium complex magnetically analyzed. DFT and ab initio calculations support the experimental magnetic results and show
that apparently small structural differences between 1 and 4·2H2O introduce important changes
in the dipolar interactions, from antiferromagnetic in 1 to ferromagnetic in 4·2H2O. Dinuclear linear fluoride single-bridged
DyIII, HoIII, and GdIII complexes
are systematically
obtained from mononuclear aquo-complexes, with the DyIII ones showing slow relaxation of the magnetization and the GdIII one revealing a weak AF coupling through the Gd−F−Gd
bridge.

Abstract
The 1 : 2 reaction between Dy(O2CMe)3·4H2O and 1-acetyl-2-napthol (LH) in MeOH has provided access to the complex [Dy2L6(MeOH)]·MeOH (1·MeOH) in a good yield. The structures of the isomorphous complex 1·MeOH and its doped diamagnetic yttrium analogue [Dy0.14Y1.86L6(MeOH)]·MeOH (Dy@Y2) have been determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and characterized based on elemental analyses, IR spectra, and powder X-ray patterns. Combined dc and ac magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization data for 1 suggest that this complex shows slow magnetic relaxation. Under a 0 Oe dc field, a single relaxation mechanism is seen while two magnetization relaxation processes are evident under a 1500 G external magnetic field. The fit to the Arrhenius law has been performed using the 1.8-10 K ac data, affording an effective barrier for the magnetization reversal of 13 K and 7 K under the external dc field. Theoretical studies have been performed using ab initio and density functional methodologies to understand the electronic structure and the magnetic relaxation dynamics resulting from the single DyIII ion as well as from the dinuclear exchange-coupled states. Rich powder EPR spectra at the X-band and Q-band were obtained from Dy@Y2, as well as from the 1·MeOH dimer, while simulation studies revealed the ferromagnetic nature of the interaction between the DyIII ions in accordance with theoretical studies.

Abstract
A family of four isostructural [Ln2Ni2(L)2(μ3-OCH3)2(μ1,3-PhCO2)2(PhCO2)2(CH3OH)4]·2CH3OH [where Ln = Gd (1), Tb (2), Dy (3) and Ho (4)] complexes has been synthesized using Schiff base ligand 2-[{(2-hydroxybenzyl)imino}methyl]-6-methoxyphenol (H2L). All the complexes possess a partial di-cubane core structure where the growth of the core is contingent upon the ligand anions and solvent generated μ3-OCH3 groups. DC magnetic analysis revealed dominating ferromagnetic interactions between the metal ions, however, we find no slow relaxation characteristics in the AC susceptibility. Further insight into the magnetic behavior of the reported complexes was achieved using DFT and CASSCF theoretical calculations, leading to the comprehension of the fast relaxation characteristics observed by magnetometry.

Abstract
The structural, magnetic and theoretical aspects are described for three triangular lanthanide complexes, [Tb(OH)(teaH2)3(paa)3]Cl2 (1), [Dy(OH)(teaH2)3(paa)3]Cl2 (2) and [Ho(OH)(teaH2)3(paa)3]Cl2 (3), and a hexanuclear wheel of formula [Dy(pdeaH)6(NO3)6] (4) [teaH3 = triethanolamine, paaH = N-(2-pyridyl)-acetoacetamide and pdeaH3 = 3-[bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]propan-1-ol]. Each complex displays single molecule toroidal behaviour as rationalised using high-level ab initio calculations. Complexes 2 and 3 are the first examples of mixed moment single molecule toroidal complexes featuring non-Kramers ions.

Abstract
Toward promising candidates of quantum information processing, the rapid development of lanthanide-based single-molecule magnets (Ln-SMMs) highlights design strategies in consideration of the local symmetry of lanthanide ions. In this review, crystal-field theory is employed to demonstrate the electronic structures according to the semiquantitative electrostatic model. Then, specific symmetry elements are analysed for the elimination of transverse crystal fields and quantum tunnelling of magnetization (QTM). In this way, high-performance Ln-SMMs can be designed to enable extremely slow relaxation of magnetization, namely magnetic blocking; however, their practical magnetic characterization becomes increasingly challenging. Therefore, we will attempt to interpret the experimental behaviours and clarify some issues in detail. Finally, representative Ln-SMMs with specific local symmetries are summarized in combination with the discussion on the symmetry strategies, and some of the underlying questions are put forward.

Abstract
Ln2@C79N EMFs are found to attain the largest magnetic coupling reported to date between Ln-radical paramagnetic centres. The obtained Ucal values are very large, and strong exchange likely to quench the QTM effects offers a great chance to obtain high blocking temperatures.
