Abstract
Oxidative stress, due to the disruption of the balance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and the antioxidant defense system, plays an important role in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Excessive ROS leads to the loss of biological molecules and cellular functions, release of many inflammatory mediators, stimulate the polarization of macrophages, and aggravate the inflammatory response, thus promoting osteoclasts and bone damage. Therefore, foreign antioxidants would effectively treat RA. Herein, ultrasmall iron-quercetin natural coordination nanoparticles (Fe-Qur NCNs) with excellent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties were constructed to effectively treat RA. Fe-Qur NCNs obtained by simple mixing retain the inherent ability to remove ROS of quercetin and have a better water-solubility and biocompatibility. In vitro experiments showed that Fe-Qur NCNs could effectively remove excess ROS, avoid cell apoptosis, and inhibit the polarization of inflammatory macrophages by reducing the activation of the nuclear factor-κ-gene binding (NF-κB) pathways. In vivo experiments showed that the swollen joints of mice with rheumatoid arthritis treated with Fe-Qur NCNs significantly improved, with Fe-Qur NCNs largely reducing inflammatory cell infiltration, increasing anti-inflammatory macrophage phenotypes, and thus inhibiting osteoclasts, which led to bone erosion. This study demonstrated that the new metal-natural coordination nanoparticles could be an effective therapeutic agent for the prevention of RA and other diseases associated with oxidative stress.

Abstract
Two europium(III) coordination polymers (CPs), namely, poly[[diaquabis(μ4-1H-benzimidazole-5,6-dicarboxylato-κ6N3:O5,O5':O5,O6:O6')(μ2-oxalato-κ4O1,O2:O1',O2')dieuropium(III)] dihydrate], {[Eu2(C9H4N2O4)2(C2O4)(H2O)2]·2H2O}n (1), and poly[(μ3-1H-benzimidazol-3-ium-5,6-dicarboxylato-κ5O5:O5',O6:O6,O6')(μ3-sulfato-κ3O:O':O'')europium(III)], [Eu(C9H5N2O4)(SO4)]n (2), have been synthesized via the hydrothermal method and structurally characterized. CP 1 shows a three-dimensional network, in which the oxalate ligand acts as a pillar, while CP 2 has a two-dimensional network based on a europium(III)-sulfate skeleton, further extended into a three-dimensional framework by hydrogen-bonding interactions. The structural diversity in the two compounds can be attributed to the different acidification abilities and geometries of the anionic ligands. The luminescence properties of 1 display the characteristic europium red emission with CIE chromaticity coordinates (2/3, 0.34). Interestingly, CP 2 shows the characteristic red emission with CIE chromaticity coordinates (0.60, 0.34) when excited at 280 nm and a near-white emission with CIE chromaticity coordinates (0.38, 0.29) when excited at 340 nm.

Abstract
The reaction of anhydrous lanthanide chlorides together with 4,4′-bipyridine yields the MOFs ∞2[Ln2Cl6(bipy)3]·2bipy, with Ln = Pr − Yb, bipy = 4,4′-bipyridine, and ∞3[La2Cl6(bipy)5]·4bipy. Post-synthetic thermal treatment in combination with different vacuum conditions was successfully used to shape the porosity of the MOFs. In addition to the MOFs microporosity, a tuneable mesoporosity can be implemented depending on the treatment conditions as a surface morphological modification. Furthermore, thermal treatment without vacuum results in several identifiable crystalline high-temperature phases. Instead of collapse of the frameworks upon heating, further aggregation under release of bipy is observed. ∞3[LaCl3(bipy)] and ∞2[Ln3Cl9(bipy)3], with Ln = La, Pr, Sm, and ∞1[Ho2Cl6(bipy)2] were identified and characterized, which can also exhibit luminescence. Besides being released upon heating, the linker 4,4′-bipyridine can undergo activation of C-C bonding in ortho-position leading to the in-situ formation of 4,4′:2′,2′′:4′′,4′′′-quaterpyridine (qtpy). qtpy can thereby function as linker itself, as shown for the formation of the network ∞2[Gd2Cl6(qtpy)2(bipy)2]·bipy. Altogether, the manuscript elaborates the influence of thermal treatment beyond the usual activation procedures reported for MOFs.
