Substitutional limit of gadolinium in β-tricalcium phosphate and its magnetic resonance imaging characteristics

To compensate the limitations of bone tissue magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a series of gadolinium (Gd³⁺ ) substituted β-Tricalcium phosphate [β-TCP, β-Ca₃ (PO₄ )₂ ] were developed. All the powders were characterized using XRD, Raman spectroscopy, Rietveld refinement of the XRD data and the studies confirmed the Gd³⁺ occupancy at Ca²⁺ (1), Ca²⁺ (2) and Ca²⁺ (3) lattice sites of β-Ca₃ (PO₄ )_2. HR-TEM analysis revealed the spherical nature of particles with diameter about 100 nm. The Gd³⁺ doped β-Ca₃ (PO₄ )₂ exhibited non-toxic behaviour to MG-63 cells in vitro and the room temperature magnetic field versus magnetization measurements confirmed its paramagnetic behaviour. MRI analysis revelas that it shorten both T₁ and T₂ proton relaxation times, thus influencing both r₁ and r₂ relaxivity values that reach 61.97 mM^-1 s^-1 and 73.35 mM^-1 s^-1 . © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. One-step synthesis of surface passivated carbon microspheres for enhanced photoluminescence and their application in multifunctional magnetic-fluorescent imaging

A carbon@Gd-DTPA microspheres bifunctional contrast agent was prepared and applied for MR imaging and luminescent imaging. The primary Na₃cit molecules have been used as an intermedium to conjugate Gd-DTPA and surface passivation agents to improve photoluminescence.

Magnetically engineered semiconductor quantum dots as multimodal imaging probes

Light-emitting semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) combined with magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents within a single nanoparticle platform are considered to perform as multimodal imaging probes in biomedical research and related clinical applications. The principles of their rational design are outlined and contemporary synthetic strategies are reviewed (heterocrystalline growth; co-encapsulation or assembly of preformed QDs and magnetic nanoparticles; conjugation of magnetic chelates onto QDs; and doping of QDs with transition metal ions), identifying the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches. Some of the opportunities and benefits that arise through in vivo imaging using these dual-mode probes are highlighted where tumor location and delineation is demonstrated in both MRI and fluorescence modality. Work on the toxicological assessments of QD/magnetic nanoparticles is also reviewed, along with progress in reducing their toxicological side effects for eventual clinical use. The review concludes with an outlook for future biomedical imaging and the identification of key challenges in reaching clinical applications.
