Abstract
Abstract
A new cobalt(II) compound with the formula [Co(5-Br-pyc)(2,2′-bipy)(H2O)(Cl)]·2H2O (1·H2O) (5-Br-Hpyc = 5-bromo-pyridine-2-carboxylic acid, 2,2′-bipy = 2,2′-bipyridine) has been hydrothermally synthesized and well characterized. The X-ray single-crystal diffraction analysis showed that 1⋅2H2O has crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/c (no. 14). The Co(II) center was octahedrally bonded by one bidentate chelate 5-Br-pyc anion and one 2,2′-bipy, one water molecule as well as one chloride anion to form the mononuclear structure of 1⋅2H2O. Complex 1⋅2H2O forms a 3D network through abundant O–H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen bonds and π⋅⋅⋅π stacking interactions. Notably, the 5-Br-Hpyc ligand was in situ generated by decarboxylation of the 3-bromo-pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (3-Br-H2pydc) precursor selectively on 2-position under hydrothermal conditions. The magnetic properties, the Hirshfeld surface structure and the synthetic process for 1⋅2H2O have been carefully described and discussed.

Abstract
Three uranyl carboxylates, namely, (UO2)(L1)(H2O)0.5 (1), [(UO2)(L2)(H2O)]·2H2O (2), and [(UO2)(L2)(H2O)]·(CH3CN) (3), were synthesized hydrothermally from 2',3',5',6'-tetramethyl-(1,1':4',1″-terphenyl)-4,4″-dicarboxylic acid (H2L1) and 2',5'-dimethyl-(1,1':4',1″-terphenyl)-3,3″-dicarboxylic acid (H2L2), which are all steric carboxylic acid ligands but vary with the carboxylic acid group position and methyl group number. It is found that compound 1 displays a three-dimensional 8-fold-interpenetrated net with channels running along the c direction. Compounds 2 and 3 are isostructural, and all display two-dimensional-layered crystal structures but contain different guest molecules. The photophysical measurements reveal that compounds 1 and 2, which contain disordered water molecules, are luminescence-quenched, whereas compound 3 containing acetonitrile molecules is luminescent.

Abstract
The mechanical properties of the uranyl squarate monohydrate material, [Formula: see text], were studied using theoretical solid-state methods based in density functional theory employing plane waves and pseudopotentials. Very demanding calculation parameters were utilized in order to obtain a realistic description of the mechanical behavior of this material. Since the determination of the positions of the hydrogen atoms in the unit cell of uranyl squarate monohydrate was not possible from x-ray diffraction data by structure refinement, they were fully optimized theoretically. The computed lattice parameters, bond distances, angles, and x-ray powder diffraction patterns of this material were in very good agreement with the experimental data. This material was found to be mechanically and dynamically stable since the corresponding stability conditions were satisfied. The values of the bulk modulus and its pressure derivatives, shear and Young moduli, Poisson ratio, ductility, hardness, and mechanical anisotropy indices of this material were reported. Furthermore, this study showed that this material exhibits the important negative Poisson ratio (NPR) and negative linear compressibility (NLC) phenomena. Uranyl squarate monohydrate is a very anisotropic brittle material characterized by a bulk modulus of ~33 GPa, which shows a minimum value of the NPR of the order of -0.5. Besides, this material displays NLC values for a limited range of positive pressures, from 0.025 GPa to 0.094 GPa, applied along the direction of minimum negative Poisson ratio. The analysis of the crystal structure as a function of pressure demonstrates that the mechanism of NLC of this material is associated to the change in shape of the uranyl pentagonal bipyramids and unrelated to the wine-rack structural mechanism commonly used to rationalize this phenomenon.

Abstract
A cage cluster consisting of 31 uranyl and 9 Sm(3+) polyhedra self-assembles in an alkaline aqueous peroxide solution and crystallizes (U31Sm9). Trimers of Sm(3+) polyhedra are templated by μ3-η(2):η(2):η(2)-peroxide groups and link to oxo atoms of uranyl ions. Three such trimers link into a ring through uranyl hexagonal bipyramids, and these are attached through six polyhedra to a unit consisting of 21 uranyl hexagonal bipyramids to complete the cage. Luminescence spectra collected with an excitation wavelength of 420 nm reveal fine structure, which is not observed for a cluster containing only uranyl polyhedra.
