Alkali and alkaline earth coordination polymers constructed from benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylic acid and flexible dicarboxylate acid ligands: syntheses, structures and spectroscopic and thermal properties

Two new metal coordination complexes, namely, poly[aqua(μ₆-benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylic acid-κ⁸O¹:O¹,O²:O^2':O⁴:O⁴,O⁵:O^5')(μ-but-2-enedioato-κ²O¹:O⁴)potassium(I)], [K₂(C₄H₂O₄)(C₁₀H₆O₈)(H₂O)₂]_n or [K₂(fum)(H₄btec)(H₂O)₂]_n, (1), and poly[aqua(μ₈-2,5-dicarboxybenzene-1,4-dicarboxylato-κ¹²O¹:O^1',O²:O²,O^2':O^2':O⁴:O^4',O⁵:O⁵,O^5':O^5')(μ-ethanedioato-κ⁴O¹,O²:O^1',O^2')strontium(II)], [Sr₂(C₂O₄)(C₁₀H₄O₈)(H₂O)₂]_n or [Sr₂(ox)(H₂btec)(H₂O)₂]_n, (2) (H₄btec = benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylic acid, H₂btec = 2,5-dicarboxybenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate, fum = fumarate and ox = oxalate), have been obtained under hydrothermal conditions by reacting the different alkali and alkaline earth metal salts with H₄btec, fumaric acid (H₂fum) and oxalic acid (H₂ox). Complexes (1) and (2) were structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and thermogravimetic analysis-differential scanning calorimetry (TGA-DSC). Complex (1) displays a two-dimensional (2D) layer with the K⁺ ion in a distorted pentagonal bipyramidal geometry and exhibits a uninodal 6-connected hxl/Shubnikov plane net (3,6) with {3⁶.4⁶.5³} topology. Complex (2) displays a three-dimensional (3D) network structure, in which the Sr²⁺ ion is in a distorted monocapped square antiprism geometry. The framework possess a binodal (5,8)-connected net with the Schläfli symbol {3².4¹⁰.5⁸.6⁴.7⁴}{3².4⁶.5²}₂. The 3D Hirshfeld surfaces and 2D fingerprint plots show that the main interactions are the O...H/H...O intermolecular interactions. Moreover, the thermal decompositions of (1) and (2) in the temperature range 303-1273 K revealed that they both decompose in three steps and transform to the corresponding metal oxide.

Effect of pH on the construction of CdII coordination polymers involving the 1,1'-[1,4-phenylenebis(methylene)]bis(3,5-dicarboxylatopyridinium) ligand

Changing the pH value of a reaction system can result in polymers with very different compositions and architectures. Two new coordination polymers based on 1,1'-[1,4-phenylenebis(methylene)]bis(3,5-dicarboxylatopyridinium) (L^2-), namely catena-poly[[[tetraaquacadmium(II)]-μ₂-1,1'-[1,4-phenylenebis(methylene)]bis(3,5-dicarboxylatopyridinium)] 1.66-hydrate], {[Cd(C₂₂H₁₄N₂O₈)(H₂O)₄]·1.66H₂O}_n, (I), and poly[{μ₆-1,1'-[1,4-phenylenebis(methylene)]bis(3,5-dicarboxylatopyridinium)}cadmium(II)], [Cd(C₂₂H₁₄N₂O₈)]_n, (II), have been prepared in the presence of NaOH or HNO₃ and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In polymer (I), each Cd^II ion is coordinated by two halves of independent L^2- ligands, forming a one-dimensional chain structure. In the crystal, these chains are further connected through O-H...O hydrogen bonds, leading to a three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded network. In polymer (II), each hexadentate L^2- ligand coordinates to six Cd^II ions, resulting in a three-dimensional network structure, in which all of the Cd^II ions and L^2- ligands are equivalent, respectively. The IR spectra, thermogravimetric analyses and fluorescence properties of both reported compounds were investigated.

Two new CdII and ZnII coordination polymers incorporating 1-aminobenzene-3,4,5-tricarboxylic acid: synthesis, crystal structure and characterization

Aminobenzoic acid derivatives are widely used in the preparation of new coordination polymers since they contain O-atom donors, as well as N-atom donors, and have a rich variety of coordination modes which can lead to polymers with intriguing structures and interesting properties. Two new coordination polymers incorporating 1-aminobenzene-3,4,5-tricarboxylic acid (H₃abtc), namely, poly[(μ₃-1-amino-5-carboxybenzene-3,4-dicarboxylato)diaquacadmium(II)], [Cd(C₉H₅NO₆)(H₂O)₂]_n, (I), and poly[[bis(μ₅-1-aminobenzene-3,4,5-tricarboxylato)triaquatrizinc(II)] dihydrate], {[Zn₃(C₉H₄NO₆)₂(H₂O)₃]·2H₂O}_n, (II), have been prepared and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In polymer (I), each tridentate 1-amino-5-carboxybenzene-3,4-dicarboxylate (Habtc^2-) ligand coordinates to three Cd^II ions to form a two-dimensional network structure, in which all of the Cd^II ions and Habtc^2- ligands are equivalent, respectively. Polymer (II) also exhibits a two-dimensional network structure, in which three crystallographically independent Zn^II ions are bridged by two crystallographically independent pentadentate 1-aminobenzene-3,4,5-tricarboxylate (abtc^3-) ligands. This indicates that changing the metal ion can influence the coordination mode of the H₃abtc-derived ligand and further influence the detailed architecture of the polymer. Moreover, the IR spectra, thermogravimetric analyses and fluorescence properties were investigated.

Synthesis, crystal structure, fluorescence and antioxidant properties of a binuclear Ag(I) complex based on the SPPh3 ligand

The binuclear silver(I) complex [Ag2(η2-SPPh3)2(SPPh3)2](BF4)2 has been synthesized. Crystal analysis shows the coordination sphere around Ag(I) can be described as a three-coordinated slightly distorted planar triangular configuration with both monodentate and monoatomic bidentate bridging coordination modes for the SPPh3 ligand. The fluorescence properties of free SPPh3 and the Ag(I) complex have been studied in the solid state. The Ag(I) complex shows quasi-reversible Ag+/Ag pairs in its electrochemistry and has significant antioxidant activity against hydroxyl radicals.

Crystal structure of trans-bis-[2-(1H-benzotriazol-1-yl)acetato-κO]bis-(ethano-lamine-κ2 N,O)copper(II)

The reaction of 2-(1H-benzotriazol-1-yl)acetic acid (HBTA; C8H7N3O2) and mono-ethano-lamine (MEA; C2H7NO) with CuCl2·2H2O resulted in the formation of the title complex, [Cu(C8H6N3O2)2(C2H7NO)2] or [Cu(BTA)2(MEA)2]. Its asymmetric unit comprises one BTA anion coordin-ating to the Cu2+ cation (site symmetry ) through the carboxyl O atom, and one MEA ligand chelating the metal cation by two heteroatoms (O and N). The equatorial Cu-O and Cu-N bond lengths are similar at 2.029 (1) and 1.980 (2) Å, respectively, while the length of the axial Cu-O bond is considerably greater [2.492 (2) Å], as is typical for Jahn-Teller-distorted systems. An intra-molecular hydrogen bond is present between the hy-droxy group of the MEA ligand and the non-coordinating O atom of the carboxyl-ate group. Inter-molecular hydrogen bonding involving the amino function of the MEA ligand and the carboxyl-ate group results in eight-membered rings with an R 2 2(8) graph-set motif. The mol-ecules are further linked by C-H⋯π inter-actions involving the triazole rings and methyl-ene groups of MEA, thus generating an overall three-dimensional supra-molecular framework.

Three-Dimensional Zn(II) Complex Based on 2-[(1H-Imidazol-1-yl)Methyl]-6-Methyl-1H- Benzimidazole and Aliphatic Carboxylate

The metal–organic complex {[Zn(immb)(suc)]·H2O}n [immb = 2-[(1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]-6-methyl-1H-benzimidazole, H2suc = succinic acid] has been prepared and its crystal structure determined. Its fluorescence and thermogravimetric data have also been obtained.

A new one-dimensional CdII coordination polymer incorporating 2,2'-(1,2-phenylene)bis(1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylate)

Imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid (H₃IDC) and its derivatives are widely used in the preparation of new coordination polymers owing to their versatile bridging coordination modes and potential hydrogen-bonding donors and acceptors. A new one-dimensional coordination polymer, namely catena-poly[[diaquacadmium(II)]-μ₃-2,2'-(1,2-phenylene)bis(1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylato)], [Cd(C₁₆H₆N₄O₈)_0.5(H₂O)₂]_n or [Cd(H₂Phbidc)_1/2(H₂O)₂]_n, has been synthesized by the reaction of Cd(OAc)₂·2H₂O (OAc is acetate) with 2,2'-(1,2-phenylene)bis(1H-imidazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid) (H₆Phbidc) under solvothermal conditions. In the polymer, one type of Cd ion (Cd1) is six-coordinated by two N atoms and two O atoms from one H₂Phbidc^4- ligand and by two O atoms from two water molecules, forming a significantly distorted octahedral CdN₂O₄ coordination geometry. In contrast, the other type of Cd ion (Cd2) is six-coordinated by two N atoms and two O atoms from two symmetry-related H₂Phbidc^4- ligands and by two O atoms from two symmetry-related water molecules, leading to a more regular octahedral coordination geometry. The Cd1 and Cd2 ions are linked by H₂Phbidc^4- ligands into a one-dimensional chain which runs parallel to the b axis. In the crystal, the one-dimensional chains are connected through hydrogen bonds, generating a two-dimensional layered structure parallel to the ab plane. Adjacent layers are further linked by hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional structure in the solid state.

A 2D rhomboidal system of manganese(ii) [Mn(3-MeC6H4COO)2(H2O)2]n with spin canting: rationalization of the magnetic exchange

The crystal structure of Mn(ii) carboxylate with 3-methylbenzoate as a bridging ligand [Mn(3-MeC₆H₄COO)₂(H₂O)₂]_n shows a rhomboidal layer, where each pair of neighbor Mn(ii) ions are bridged through only one carboxylate group with a syn-anti conformation. The magnetic exchange between neighbor ions is weakly antiferromagnetic (J = -0.52 cm^-1, g = 2.04), and at low temperature the system shows spin canting with T_B = 3.8 K. Computational studies, based on periodic calculations of the energies of the significant spin states on the magnetic cell and some higher supercells, corroborate the weak AF interaction between the adjacent Mn(ii) ions and preclude the negligible effect of frustration caused by very weak interactions between the non-adjacent ions in the magnetic response of the system. The results provide compelling evidence that the observed spin canting is due to the local coordination geometry of the manganese ions leading to two antiferromagnetically coupled subnets with different axial vectors.

A new two-dimensional CdII coordination polymer based on 2-(1H-imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-6-methyl-1H-benzimidazole and benzene-1,2-dicarboxylate: synthesis, crystal structure and characterization

In the construction of coordination polymers, many factors can influence the formation of the final architectures, such as the nature of the metal centres, the organic ligands and the counter-anions. In the coordination polymer poly[aqua(μ-benzene-1,2-dicarboxylato-κ⁴O¹,O^1':O²,O^2')[μ-2-(1H-imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-6-methyl-1H-benzimidazole-κ²N²:N³]cadmium(II)], [Cd(C₁₂H₁₂N₄)(C₈H₄O₄)(H₂O)]_n or [Cd(immb)(1,2-bdic)(H₂O)]_n, each Cd^II ion is seven-coordinated by two N atoms from two symmetry-related 2-(1H-imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-6-methyl-1H-benzimidazole (immb) ligands, by four O atoms from two symmetry-related benzene-1,2-dicarboxylate (1,2-bdic^2-) ligands and by one water molecule, leading to a CdN₂O₅ distorted pentagonal bipyramidal coordination environment. The immb and 1,2-bdic^2- ligands bridge Cd^II ions and form a two-dimensional network structure. O-H...O and N-H...O hydrogen bonds stabilize the structure. In addition, the IR spectroscopic properties, PXRD patterns, thermogravimetric behaviour and fluorescence properties of the title polymer have been investigated.

Syntheses, structures and characterization of isomorphous CoII and NiII coordination polymers based on 2-[(1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]-6-methyl-1H-benzimidazole and benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate

Careful choice of the organic ligands is one of the most important parameters in the rational design and synthesis of coordination polymers. Aromatic polycarboxylates have been widely used in the preparation of metal-organic polymers since they can utilize various coordination modes to form diverse structures and can act as hydrogen-bond acceptors and donors in the assembly of supramolecular structures. Nitrogen-heterocyclic organic compounds have also been used extensively as ligands for the construction of polymers with interesting structures. In the polymers catena-poly[[[diaquabis{2-[(1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]-6-methyl-1H-benzimidazole-κN³}cobalt(II)]-μ₂-benzene-1,4-dicarboxylato-κ²O¹:O⁴] dihydrate], {[Co(C₈H₄O₄)(C₁₂H₁₁N₄)₂(H₂O)₂]·2H₂O}_n, (I), and catena-poly[[[diaquabis{2-[(1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]-6-methyl-1H-benzimidazole-κN³}nickel(II)]-μ₂-benzene-1,4-dicarboxylato-κ²O¹:O⁴] dihydrate], {[Ni(C₈H₄O₄)(C₁₂H₁₁N₄)₂(H₂O)₂]·2H₂O}_n, (II), the Co^II or Ni^II ion lies on an inversion centre and exhibits a slightly distorted octahedral coordination geometry, coordinated by two N atoms from two imidazole rings and four O atoms from two monodentate carboxylate groups and two water molecules. The dicarboxylate ligands bridge metal ions forming a polymeric chain. The 2-[(1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl]-6-methyl-1H-benzimidazole ligands coordinate to the Co^II or Ni^II centres in monodentate modes through an imidazole N atom and are pendant on opposite sides of the main chain. The two structures are isomorphous. In the crystal, the one-dimensional chains are further connected through O-H...O, O-H...N and N-H...O hydrogen bonds, leading to a three-dimensional supramolecular architecture. In addition, the IR spectroscopic properties, PXRD patterns, thermogravimetric behaviours and fluorescence properties of both polymers have been investigated.

A new one-dimensional CuII complex with a three-dimensional supramolecular architecture incorporating benzene-1,3-dicarboxylate and 1-[(1H-benzotriazol-1-yl)methyl]-1H-imidazole

In the complex catena-poly[[bis{1-[(1H-benzotriazol-1-yl)methyl]-1H-imidazole-κN³}copper(II)]-μ-benzene-1,3-dicarboxylato-κ³O¹,O^1':O³], {[Cu(C₈H₄O₄)(C₁₀H₉N₅)₂(H₂O)]·2H₂O}_n, each Cu^II ion is six-coordinated by two N atoms from two crystallographically independent 1-[(1H-benzotriazol-1-yl)methyl]-1H-imidazole (bmi) ligands, by three O atoms from two symmetry-related benzene-1,3-dicarboxylate (bdic^2-) ligands and by one water molecule, leading to a distorted CuN₂O₄ octahedral coordination environment. The Cu^II ions are connected by bridging bdic^2- anions to generate a one-dimensional chain. The bmi ligands coordinate to the Cu^II ions in monodentate modes and are pendant on opposite sides of the main chain. In the crystal, the chains are linked by O-H...O and O-H...N hydrogen bonds, as well as by π-π interactions, into a three-dimensional network. A thermogravimetric analysis was carried out and the fluorescence behaviour of the complex was also investigated.

Roles of temperature, solvent, M/L ratios and anion in preparing complexes containing a Himta ligand

Nine new complexes based on the Himta ligand were hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. A systematic and comprehensive investigation of four influence factors on some complex architectures was carried out.

Tuning zinc coordination architectures by benzenedicarboxylate position isomers and bis(triazole)

Three position isomers 1,2-, 1,3-, 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate and 1,4-bis(1,2,4-triazol-4-yl)benzene were used to assembly zinc(II) coordination polymers {[Zn2(btx)0.5(1,2-bdc)2(H2O)]·H2O}n (1), {[Zn(btx)(1,3-bdc)]·2H2O·(DMF)}n (2) and {[Zn(btx)(1,4-bdc)]·3H2O}n (3). 1 is a (3,4,4,4)-connected two-dimensional network with point symbol (4(2)·6)(4(4)·6(2))(4(3)·6(2)·8)(4(2)·6·10(3)). 2 shows a two-dimensional (4,4) network. 3 exhibits a 5-fold interpenetrated three-dimensional diamondoid network. The structural versatility shows that the structures of coordination polymers can be tuned by the position isomers ligands. The luminescence and thermal stability were investigated.

Metal-controlled structural variations of coordination architectures constructed from flexible 1H-benzimidazole-1-propionic acid

Five low-dimensional coordination polymers and a novel discrete dodecametallic cage have been obtained from appropriate transition metals in combination with a flexible bifunctional benzimidazole carboxylic acid.
