Abstract
We develop a functional derivative approach to calculate the chemical potentials of second-order perturbation theory (MP2). In the functional derivative approach, the correlation part of the MP2 chemical potential, which is the derivative of the MP2 correlation energy with respect to the occupation number of frontier orbitals, is obtained from the chain rule via the noninteracting Green's function. First, the MP2 correlation energy is expressed in terms of the noninteracting Green's function, and its functional derivative to the noninteracting Green's function is the second-order self-energy. Then, the derivative of the noninteracting Green's function to the occupation number is obtained by including the orbital relaxation effect. We show that the MP2 chemical potentials obtained from the functional derivative approach agree with that obtained from the finite difference approach. The one-electron Hamiltonian, defined as the derivative of the MP2 energy with respect to the one particle density matrix, is also derived using the functional derivative approach, which can be used in the self-consistent calculations of MP2 and double-hybrid density functionals. The developed functional derivative approach is promising for calculating the chemical potentials and the one-electron Hamiltonian of approximate functionals and many-body perturbation approaches dependent explicitly on the noninteracting Green's function.

Abstract
We investigate the reaction pathways of nine important CO2-related reactions using the revDSD-PBEP86-D3(BJ)/jun-cc-pV(T+d)Z level and simultaneously employ an accurate composite method (jun-Cheap) based on coupled-cluster (CC) theory. Subsequently, the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus/master equation (RRKM/ME) is solved to calculate the temperature- and pressure-dependent rate constants. This work investigates reactions involving transition states that have been overlooked in previous literature, including the dissociation of singlet-state C3O2, the triple channel formation of C2O + CO to form C3O2, and the formation of O3 + CO. The results show that CO3 is highly prone to dissociation at high temperatures. Finally, the kinetic data show that over a wide temperature range, our calculations are consistent with previous experimental measurements. The majority of the reaction rate constants studied exhibit significant pressure dependence, while the O3 + CO reaction is pressure-independent at low temperatures. These results are instrumental in the development of detailed kinetic models for the CO2 radiolysis reaction network.

Abstract
An enhanced computational protocol has been devised for the accurate characterization of gas-phase barrier-less reactions in the framework of the reaction-path (RP) and variable reaction coordinate variational transition-state theory. In particular, the synergistic combination of density functional theory and Monte Carlo sampling to optimize reactive fluxes led to a reliable yet effective computational workflow. A black-box strategy has been developed for selecting the most suited density functional with reference to a high-level one-dimensional reference potential. At the same time, different descriptions of hindered rotations are automatically selected, depending on the corresponding harmonic frequencies along the RP. The performance of the new tool is investigated by means of two prototypical reactions involving different degrees of static and dynamic correlation, namely, H2S + Cl and CH3 + CH3. The remarkable agreement of the computed kinetic parameters with the available experimental data confirms the accuracy and robustness of the proposed approach. Together with their intrinsic interest, these results also pave the way toward systematic investigations of gas-phase reactions involving barrier-less elementary steps by a reliable, user-friendly tool, which can be confidently used also by nonspecialists.

Abstract
Despite its simplicity and relatively low computational cost, second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) is well-known to overbind noncovalent interactions between polarizable monomers and some organometallic bonds. In such situations, the pairwise-additive correlation energy expression in MP2 is inadequate. Although energy-gap dependent amplitude regularization can substantially improve the accuracy of conventional MP2 in these regimes, the same regularization parameter worsens the accuracy for small molecule thermochemistry and density-dependent properties. Recently, we proposed a repartitioning of Brillouin-Wigner perturbation theory that is size-consistent to second order (BW-s2), and a free parameter (α) was set to recover the exact dissociation limit of H2 in a minimal basis set. Alternatively α can be viewed as a regularization parameter, where each value of α represents a valid variant of BW-s2, which we denote as BW-s2(α). In this work, we semi-empirically optimize α for noncovalent interactions, thermochemistry, alkane conformational energies, electronic response properties, and transition metal datasets, leading to improvements in accuracy relative to the ab initio parameterization of BW-s2 and MP2. We demonstrate that the optimal α parameter (α = 4) is more transferable across chemical problems than energy-gap-dependent regularization parameters. This is attributable to the fact that the BW-s2(α) regularization strength depends on all of the information encoded in the t amplitudes rather than just orbital energy differences. While the computational scaling of BW-s2(α) is iterative O(N5), this effective and transferable approach to amplitude regularization is a promising route to incorporate higher-order correlation effects at second-order cost.

Abstract
We update the Quadratic Integrand Double-Hybrid (QIDH) model [J. Chem. Phys. 141, 031101 (2014)] by incorporating the nonempirical restored-regularized Strongly Constrained and Appropriately Normed (r2SCAN) meta-generalized gradient approximation exchange-correlation functional, thus devising a robust density functional approximation free of any empirical parameter and incorporating all the constraints so far known for the exchange-correlation kernel. We assessed the new r2SCAN-QIDH expression on the GMTKN55 database and further extend its application to various types of non-covalent interactions (e.g., S66 × 8, O24 × 5). The assessment done shows that the model becomes very competitive in accuracy with respect to parent exchange-correlation functionals of any type, but without relying on any fitted parameter or numerical training.

Abstract
Second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) often breaks down catastrophically in small-gap systems, leaving much to be desired in its performance for myriad chemical applications such as noncovalent interactions, thermochemistry, and dative bonding in transition metal complexes. This divergence problem has reignited interest in Brillouin-Wigner perturbation theory (BWPT), which is regular at all orders but lacks size consistency and extensivity, severely limiting its application to chemistry. In this work, we propose an alternative partitioning of the Hamiltonian that leads to a regular BWPT perturbation series that, through the second order, is size-extensive, size-consistent (provided its Hartree-Fock reference is also), and orbital invariant. Our second-order size-consistent Brillouin-Wigner (BW-s2) approach can describe the exact dissociation limit of H2 in a minimal basis set, regardless of the spin polarization of the reference orbitals. More broadly, we find that BW-s2 offers improvements relative to MP2 for covalent bond breaking, noncovalent interaction energies, and metal/organic reaction energies, although rivaling coupled-cluster with single and double substitutions for thermochemical properties.

Abstract
The double-hybrid (DH) time-dependent density functional theory is extended to vertical ionization potentials (VIPs) and electron affinities (VEAs). Utilizing the density fitting approximation, efficient implementations are presented for the genuine DH ansatz relying on the perturbative second-order correction, while an iterative analogue is also elaborated using our second-order algebraic-diagrammatic construction [ADC(2)]-based DH approach. The favorable computational requirements of the present schemes are discussed in detail. The performance of the recently proposed spin-component-scaled and spin-opposite-scaled (SOS) range-separated (RS) and long-range corrected (LC) DH functionals is comprehensively assessed, while popular hybrid and global DH approaches are also discussed. For the benchmark calculations, up-to-date test sets are selected with high-level coupled-cluster references. Our results show that the ADC(2)-based SOS-RS-PBE-P86 approach is the most accurate and robust functional. This method consistently outperforms the excellent SOS-ADC(2) approach for VIPs, although the results are somewhat less satisfactory for VEAs. Among the genuine DH functionals, the SOS-ωPBEPP86 approach is also recommended for describing ionization processes, but its performance is even less reliable for electron-attached states. In addition, surprisingly good results are attained by the LC hybrid ωB97X-D functional, where the corresponding occupied (unoccupied) orbital energies are retrieved as VIPs (VEAs) within the present formalism.

Abstract
A systematic study of the entropic penalty for associative reactions is presented. It is shown that computed solution-phase Gibbs free energies typically overestimate entropic contributions. This entropic penalty for associative reactions in solution, i.e., if the number of particles decreases along the reaction coordinate (sum of stoichiometric numbers ), originates from the insufficient treatment of entropic effects by implicit solvent models. We propose an additive correction scheme to Gibbs free energies that is suitable for routine applications by non-expert users. This correction is based on Garza's formalism for the solution-phase entropy [A. J. Garza, J. Chem. Theory Comput., 2019, 15, 3204.] that is physically sound and embedded into an efficient black-box type algorithm. To critically evaluate the entropic penalty and its proposed treatment, we compiled an experimental benchmark set of 31 ΔrG and 22 in 15 different solvents. Using a representative best-practice computational protocol (at wave function theory (WFT) based DLPNO-CCSD(T) and density functional theory (DFT) based revDSD-PBEP86-D4 level with an implicit solvent model), we determined a sizeable entropic penalty ranging from 2-11 kcal mol-1. Using the correction scheme presented herein, the entropic penalty is corrected to the chemical accuracy of ≤1 kcal mol-1 (WFT and DFT). The same applies to at the WFT level. Barriers at the DFT level are overestimated by 2 kcal mol-1 (classic) and underestimated by 2 kcal mol-1 (corrected). This effect is attributed to the finding that barriers computed at the DFT level are systematically 2-3 kcal mol-1 lower than barriers obtained with WFT.

Abstract
The double-hybrid (DH) time-dependent density functional theory is extended to core excitations. Two different DH formalisms are presented utilizing the core-valence separation (CVS) approximation. First, a CVS-DH variant is introduced relying on the genuine perturbative second-order correction, while an iterative analogue is also presented using our second-order algebraic-diagrammatic construction [ADC(2)]-based DH ansatz. The performance of the new approaches is tested for the most popular DH functionals using the recently proposed XABOOM [J. Chem. Theory Comput.2021, 17, 1618] benchmark set. In order to make a careful comparison, the accuracy and precision of the methods are also inspected. Our results show that the genuine approaches are highly competitive with the more advanced CVS-ADC(2)-based methods if only excitation energies are required. In contrast, as expected, significant differences are observed in oscillator strengths; however, the precision is acceptable for the genuine functionals as well. Concerning the performance of the CVS-DH approaches, the PBE0-2/CVS-ADC(2) functional is superior, while its spin-opposite-scaled variant is also recommended as a cost-effective alternative. For these approaches, significant improvements are realized in the error measures compared with the popular CVS-ADC(2) method.

Abstract
A family of non-empirical double-hybrid (DH) density functionals, such as Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE)0-DH, PBE-QIDH, and their range-separated exchange (RSX) versions RSX-0DH and RSX-QIDH, all using Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof(PBE) exchange and correlationfunctionals, is applied here to calculate the excitation energies for increasingly longer linear and cyclic acenes as part of their intense benchmarking for excited states of all types. The energies for the two lowest-lying singlet 1La and 1Lb states of linear oligoacenes as well as the triplet 3La and 3Lb states, are calculated and compared with experimental results. These functionals clearly outperform the results obtained from hybrid functionals and favorably compare with other double-hybrid expressions also tested here, such as B2-PLYP, B2GP-PLYP, ωB2-PLYP, and ωB2GP-PLYP. The study is complemented by the computation of adiabatic S0-T1 singlet-triplet energy difference for linear acenes as well as the extension of the study to strained cyclic oligomers, showing how the family of non-empirical expressions robustly leads to competitive results.

Abstract
Nowadays, many chemical investigations are supported by routine calculations of molecular structures, reaction energies, barrier heights, and spectroscopic properties. The lion's share of these quantum-chemical calculations applies density functional theory (DFT) evaluated in atomic-orbital basis sets. This work provides best-practice guidance on the numerous methodological and technical aspects of DFT calculations in three parts: Firstly, we set the stage and introduce a step-by-step decision tree to choose a computational protocol that models the experiment as closely as possible. Secondly, we present a recommendation matrix to guide the choice of functional and basis set depending on the task at hand. A particular focus is on achieving an optimal balance between accuracy, robustness, and efficiency through multi-level approaches. Finally, we discuss selected representative examples to illustrate the recommended protocols and the effect of methodological choices.

Abstract
In this Communication, we assess a panel of 18 double-hybrid density functionals for the modeling of the thermochemical and kinetic properties of an extended dataset of 449 organic chemistry reactions belonging to the BH9 database. We show that most of DHs provide a statistically robust performance to model barrier height and reaction energies in reaching the “chemical accuracy.” In particular, we show that nonempirical DHs, such as PBE0-DH and PBE-QIDH, or minimally parameterized alternatives, such as ωB2PLYP and B2K-PLYP, succeed to accurately model both properties in a balanced fashion. We demonstrate, however, that parameterized approaches, such as ωB97X-2 or DSD-like DHs, are more biased to only one of both properties.

Abstract
The accurate evaluation of weak noncovalent interactions in large, that is those containing up to thousand atoms, molecular systems represents a difficult challenge for any quantum chemical method. Indeed, some approximations are often introduced to render affordable these calculations. Here, we consider the PBE-QIDH/DH-SVPD protocol, combining a nonempirical double hybrid functional (PBE-QIDH) with a small basis set (DH-SVPD) tailored for noncovalent interactions with a double aim: (i) explore the robustness and accuracy of this protocol with respect to other Density Functional Approximations; (ii) illustrate how its performances are affected by the computational parameters underlying the calculation of the exact exchange and the Coulomb contribution, as well as the perturbative term. To this end, we consider three data sets, namely S66, L7, and CiM13, incorporating molecules of increasing size. On the bright side, our results suggest that the PBE-QIDH/DH-SVPD protocol is particularly accurate for large systems such as those contained in the CiM13 set (up to more than 1000 atoms and 14 000 basis functions), for which the DLPNO approximation leads to a significant speed-up for the evaluation of the perturbative correlation term. However, our analysis also points out the limit of this statistical exercise, when the quality of the reference data cannot be easily assessed, due to the size of the molecular complexes involved, and when the number of molecules is limited.

Abstract
Depleted uranium hexafluoride (UF6), a stockpiled byproduct of the nuclear fuel cycle, reacts readily with atmospheric humidity, but the mechanism is poorly understood. We compare several potential initiation steps at a consistent level of theory, generating underlying structures and vibrational modes using hybrid density functional theory (DFT) and computing relative energies of stationary points with double-hybrid (DH) DFT. A benchmark comparison is performed to assess the quality of DH-DFT data using reference energy differences obtained using a complete-basis-limit coupled-cluster (CC) composite method. The associated large-basis CC computations were enabled by a new general-purpose pseudopotential capability implemented as part of this work. Dispersion-corrected parameter-free DH-DFT methods, namely PBE0-DH-D3(BJ) and PBE-QIDH-D3(BJ), provided mean unsigned errors within chemical accuracy (1 kcal mol-1) for a set of barrier heights corresponding to the most energetically favorable initiation steps. The hydrolysis mechanism is found to proceed via intermolecular hydrogen transfer within van der Waals complexes involving UF6, UF5OH, and UOF4, in agreement with previous studies, followed by the formation of a previously unappreciated dihydroxide intermediate, UF4(OH)2. The dihydroxide is predicted to form under both kinetic and thermodynamic control, and, unlike the alternate pathway leading to the UO2F2 monomer, its reaction energy is exothermic, in agreement with observation. Finally, harmonic and anharmonic vibrational simulations are performed to reinterpret literature infrared spectroscopy in light of this newly identified species.

Abstract
We study the optimal tuning of the free parameters in range-separated double hybrid functionals, based on enforcing the exact conditions of piecewise linearity and spin constancy. We find that introducing the range separation in both the exchange and the correlation terms allows for the minimization of both fractional charge and fractional spin errors for singlet atoms. The optimal set of parameters is system specific, underlining the importance of the tuning procedure. We test the performance of the resulting optimally tuned functionals for the dissociation curves of diatomic molecules. We find that they recover the correct dissociation curve for the one-electron system, H2+, and improve the dissociation curves of many-electron molecules such as H2 and Li2, but they also yield a nonphysical maximum and only converge to the correct dissociation limit at very large distances.

Abstract
In the present work, resorting to linear response theory, we examine the plausibility of postulating Kohn-Sham (KS)-type equations which contain, by definition, an effective hybrid potential made up by some arbitrary mixture of local and non-local terms. In this way a general justification for the construction of hybrid functionals is provided without resorting to arguments based on the adiabatic connection, the generalized KS theory or the Levy's constrained search (or its variations). In particular, we examine the cases of single-hybrid functionals, derived from non-local exchange and of double-hybrid functionals, emerging from non-local second-order expressions obtained from the KS perturbation theory. A further generalization for higher-order hybrid functionals is also included.

Abstract
We calculate the relative energy between the cumulene and polyyne structures of a set of C4k+2 (k = 4-7) rings (C18, C22, C26, and C30 prompted by the recent synthesis of the cyclo[18]carbon (or simply C18) compounds. Reference results were obtained by a costly Quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) approach, providing thus very accurate values allowing to systematically compare the performance of a variety of wavefunction methods [(i.e., MP2, SCS-MP2, SOS-MP2, DLPNO-CCSD, and DLPNO-CCSD(T)] as well as DFT approaches, applying for the latter a diversity of density functionals covering global and range-separated hybrid and double-hybrid models. The influence of the use of a range-separation scheme for density functionals, for both hybrid and double-hybrid expressions, is discussed according to its key role. Overall, range-separated double-hybrid functionals (e.g., RSX-QIDH) behave very accurately and provide competitive results compared with DLPNO-CCSD(T), at a more reasonable computational cost.

Abstract
Our second-order algebraic-diagrammatic construction [ADC(2)]-based double-hybrid (DH) ansatz (J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2019, 15, 4440. DOI: 10.1021/acs.jctc.9b00391) is combined with range-separation techniques. In the present scheme, both the exchange and the correlation contributions are range-separated, while spin-scaling approaches are also applied. The new methods are thoroughly tested for the most popular benchmark sets including 250 singlet and 156 triplet excitations, as well as 80 oscillator strengths. It is demonstrated that the range separation for the correlation contributions is highly recommended for both the genuine and the ADC(2)-based DH approaches. Our results show that the latter scheme slightly but consistently outperforms the former one for single excitation dominated transitions. Furthermore, states with larger fractions of double excitations are assessed as well, and challenging charge-transfer excitations are also discussed, where the recently proposed spin-scaled long-range corrected DHs fail. The suggested iterative fourth-power scaling RS-PBE-P86/SOS-ADC(2) method, using only three adjustable parameters, provides the most robust and accurate excitation energies within the DH theory. In addition, the relative error of the oscillator strengths is reduced by 65% compared to the best genuine DH functionals.

Abstract
We investigate the relationships between electron-density and electronic-energy errors produced by modern exchange-correlation density-functional approximations belonging to all of the rungs of Perdew's ladder. To this aim, a panel of relevant (semi)local properties evaluated at critical points of the electron-density field (as defined within the framework of Bader's atoms-in-molecules theory) are computed on a large selection of molecular systems involved in thermodynamic, kinetic, and noncovalent interaction chemical databases using density functionals developed in a nonempirical and minimally and highly parametrized fashion. The comparison of their density- and energy-based performance, also discussed in terms of density-driven errors, casts light on the strengths and weaknesses of the most recent and efficient density-functional approximations.

Abstract
A collection of five challenging datasets, including noncovalent interactions, reaction barriers and electronic rearrangements of medium-sized hydrocarbons, has been selected to verify the robustness of double-hybrid functionals used in conjunction with the small DH-SVPD basis set, especially developed for noncovalent interactions. The analysis is completed by other, more standard functionals, for a total of 17 models, including also empirical corrections for dispersion. The obtained results show that the chemical accuracy threshold, that is an error lower than 1.0 kcal mol−1, can be obtained by pairing the nonempirical PBE-QIDH functional with the DH-SVPD basis set, as well as by other semi-empirical functionals, such as DSD-PBEP86, using larger basis sets and empirical corrections. More in general, a significant improvement can be obtained using the DH-SVPD basis set with DHs, without resorting to any empirical corrections. This choice leads to a fast computational protocol that, avoiding any empirical potential, remains on a fully quantum ground. The pairing of the PBE-QIDH double-hybrid functional with a tailored split-valence basis set leads to a fast computational protocol for the accurate evaluation of hydrocarbon thermochemistry, without resorting to any empirical correction.![]()

Abstract
Our recently presented range-separated (RS) double-hybrid (DH) time-dependent density functional approach [J. Chem. Theory Comput. 17, 927 (2021)] is combined with spin-scaling techniques. The proposed spin-component-scaled (SCS) and scaled-opposite-spin (SOS) variants are thoroughly tested for almost 500 excitations including the most challenging types. This comprehensive study provides useful information not only about the new approaches but also about the most prominent methods in the DH class. The benchmark calculations confirm the robustness of the RS-DH ansatz, while several tendencies and deficiencies are pointed out for the existing functionals. Our results show that the SCS variant consistently improves the results, while the SOS variant preserves the benefits of the original RS-DH method reducing its computational expenses. It is also demonstrated that, besides our approaches, only the nonempirical functionals provide balanced performance for general applications, while particular methods are only suggested for certain types of excitations.

Abstract
The so-called protobranching phenomenon, that is the greater stability of branched alkanes with respect to their linear isomers, represents an interesting challenge for approaches based on density functional theory (DFT), since it requires a balanced description of several electronic effects, including (intramolecular) dispersion forces. Here, we investigate this problem using a protocol recently developed based on double-hybrid functionals and a small basis set, DH-SVPD, suited for noncovalent interactions. The energies of bond separation reactions (BSR), defined on the basis of an isodesmic principle, are taken as reference properties for the evaluation of 15 DFT approaches. The obtained results show that error lower than the so-called "chemical accuracy" (<1.0 kcal/mol) can be obtained by the proposed protocol on both relative reaction energies and enthalpies. These results are then verified on the standard BSR36 data set and support the proposition of our computational protocol, named DHthermo, where any DH functional, such as PBE-QIDH or B2PLYP, provides accurate results when coupled to an empirical dispersion correction and the DH-SVPD basis set. This protocol not only gives subchemical accuracy on the thermochemistry of alkanes but it is extremely easy to use with common quantum-chemistry codes.

Abstract

A linear-scaling
local second-order Møller–Plesset
(MP2) method is presented for high-spin open-shell molecules based
on restricted open-shell (RO) reference functions. The open-shell
local MP2 (LMP2) approach inherits the iteration- and redundancy-free
formulation and the completely integral-direct, OpenMP-parallel, and
memory and disk use economic algorithms of our closed-shell LMP2 implementation.
By utilizing restricted local molecular orbitals for the demanding
integral transformation step and by introducing a novel long-range
spin-polarization approximation, the computational cost of RO-LMP2
approaches that of closed-shell LMP2. Extensive benchmarks were performed
for reactions of radicals, ionization potentials, as well as spin-state
splittings of carbenes and transition-metal complexes. Compared to
the conventional MP2 reference for systems of up to 175 atoms, local
errors of at most 0.1 kcal/mol were found, which are well below the
intrinsic accuracy of MP2. RO-LMP2 computations are presented for
challenging protein models of up to 601 atoms and 11 000 basis
functions, which involve either spin states of a complexed iron ion
or a highly delocalized singly occupied orbital. The corresponding
runtimes of 9–15 h obtained with a single, many-core CPU demonstrate
that MP2, as well as spin-scaled MP2 and double-hybrid density functional
methods, become widely accessible for open-shell systems of unprecedented
size and complexity.

Abstract
We investigate the performance of a set of recently introduced range-separated double-hybrid functionals, namely ωB2-PLYP, ωB2GP-PLYP, RSX-0DH, and RSX-QIDH models for hard-to-calculate excitation energies. We compare with the parent (B2-PLYP, B2GP-PLYP, PBE0-DH, and PBE-QIDH) and other (DSD-PBEP86) double-hybrid models as well as with some of the most widely employed hybrid functionals (B3LYP, PBE0, M06-2X, and ωB97X). For this purpose, we select a number of medium-sized intra- and inter-molecular charge-transfer excitations, which are known to be challenging to calculate using time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) and for which accurate reference values are available. We assess whether the high accuracy shown by the newest double-hybrid models is also confirmed for those cases too. We find that asymptotically corrected double-hybrid models yield a superior performance, especially for the inter-molecular charge-transfer excitation energies, as compared to standard double-hybrid models. Overall, the PBE-QIDH and its corresponding range-separated RSX-QIDH functional are recommended for general-purpose TD-DFT applications, depending on whether long-range effects are expected to play a significant role.

Abstract
A simple and robust range-separated (RS) double-hybrid (DH) time-dependent density functional approach is presented for the accurate calculation of excitation energies of molecules within the Tamm-Dancoff approximation. The scheme can be considered as an excited-state extension of the ansatz proposed by Toulouse and co-workers [J. Chem. Phys. 2018, 148, 164105], which is based on the two-parameter decomposition of the Coulomb potential, for which both the exchange and correlation contributions are range-separated. A flexible and efficient implementation of the new scheme is also presented, which facilitates its extension to any combination of exchange and correlation functionals. The performance of the new approximation is tested for singlet excitations on several benchmark compilations and thoroughly compared to that of representative DH, RS hybrid, and RS DH functionals. The one-electron basis set dependence and computation times are also assessed. Our results show that the new approach improves on standard DHs in most cases, and it can provide a more robust and accurate alternative. In addition, on average, it noticeably surpasses the existing RS hybrid and RS DH functionals.

A hierarchy
of wavefunction composite methods (cWFT), based on
G4-type cWFT methods available for elements H through Rn, was recently
reported by the present authors [J. Chem. Theor. Comput.2020, 16, 4238]. We extend this hierarchy
by considering the inner-shell correlation energy in the second-order
Møller–Plesset correction and replacing the Weigend–Ahlrichs
def2-mZVPP(D) basis sets used with complete basis
set extrapolation from augmented correlation-consistent core–valence
triple-ζ, aug-cc-pwCVTZ(-PP), and quadruple-ζ, aug-cc-pwCVQZ(-PP),
basis sets, thus creating cc-G4-type methods. For the large and chemically
diverse GMTKN55 benchmark suite, they represent a substantial further
improvement and bring WTMAD2 (weighted mean absolute deviation) down
below 1 kcal/mol. Intriguingly, the lion’s share of the improvement
comes from better capture of valence correlation; the inclusion of
core–valence correlation is almost an order of magnitude less
important. These robust correlation-consistent cWFT methods approach
the CCSD(T) complete basis limit with just one or a few fitted parameters.
Particularly, the DLPNO variants such as cc-G4-T-DLPNO are applicable
to fairly large molecules at a modest computational cost, as is (for
a reduced range of elements) a different variant using MP2-F12/cc-pVTZ-F12
for the MP2 component.

Abstract
The atmospheric reaction of H2S with Cl has been reinvestigated to check if, as previously suggested, only explicit dynamical computations can lead to an accurate evaluation of the reaction rate because of strong recrossing effects and the breakdown of the variational extension of transition state theory. For this reason, the corresponding potential energy surface has been thoroughly investigated, thus leading to an accurate characterization of all stationary points, whose energetics has been computed at the state of the art. To this end, coupled-cluster theory including up to quadruple excitations has been employed, together with the extrapolation to the complete basis set limit and also incorporating core-valence correlation, spin-orbit, and scalar relativistic effects as well as diagonal Born-Oppenheimer corrections. This highly accurate composite scheme has also been paralleled by less expensive yet promising computational approaches. Moving to kinetics, variational transition state theory and its variable reaction coordinate extension for barrierless steps have been exploited, thus obtaining a reaction rate constant (8.16 × 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at 300 K and 1 atm) in remarkable agreement with the experimental counterpart. Therefore, contrary to previous claims, there is no need to invoke any failure of the transition state theory, provided that sufficiently accurate quantum-chemical computations are performed. The investigation of the puzzling case of the H2S + Cl system allowed us to present a robust approach for disclosing the thermochemistry and kinetics of reactions of atmospheric and astrophysical interest.

Abstract
We recently derived a new and simple route to the determination of the range-separation parameter in range-separated exchange hybrid and double-hybrid density functionals by imposing an additional constraint to the exchange-correlation energy to recover the total energy of the hydrogen atom [Brémond et al., J. Chem. Phys. 15, 201102 (2019)]. Here, we thoroughly assess this choice by statistically comparing the derived values of the range-separation parameters to the ones obtained using the optimal tuning (OT) approach. We show that both approaches closely agree, thus, confirming the reliability of ours. We demonstrate that it provides very close performances in the computation of properties particularly prone to the one- and many-electron self-interaction errors (i.e., ionization potentials). Our approach arises as an alternative to the OT procedure, conserving the accuracy and efficiency of a standard Kohn-Sham approach to density-functional theory computation.

Abstract
We construct range-separated double-hybrid (RSDH) schemes which combine coupled-cluster or random-phase approximations (RPAs) with a density functional based on a two-parameter Coulomb-attenuating-method-like decomposition of the electron-electron interaction. We find that the addition of a fraction of short-range electron-electron interaction in the wave-function part of the calculation is globally beneficial for the RSDH scheme involving a variant of the RPA with exchange terms. Even though the latter scheme is globally as accurate as the corresponding scheme employing only second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory for atomization energies, reaction barrier heights, and weak intermolecular interactions of small molecules, it is more accurate for the more complicated case of the benzene dimer in the stacked configuration. The present RSDH scheme employing a RPA thus represents a new member in the family of double hybrids with minimal empiricism which could be useful for general chemical applications.

Abstract
The application of stable isotopes to address a wide range of biochemical, microbiological and environmental problems is hindered by the experimental difficulty and the computational cost of determining equilibrium isotopic fractionations (EIF) of large organic molecules. Here, we evaluate the factors that impact the accuracy of computed EIFs and develop a framework for cost-effective and accurate computation of EIFs by density functional theory (DFT). We generated two benchmark databases of experimentally determined EIFs, one for H isotopes and another for the isotopes of the heavy atoms C, N and O. The accuracy of several DFT exchange-correlation functionals in calculating EIFs was then evaluated by comparing the computational results to these experimental datasets. We find that with the def2-TZVP basis set, O3LYP had the lowest mean absolute deviation (21‰ and 3.9‰ for the isotopic fractionation of H and the heavier atoms, respectively), but the GGA/meta-GGA functionals τHCTHD3BJ, τHCTH and HCTH have similar performances (22‰ and 4.1‰, respectively, for τHCTHD3BJ). Leveraging the good performance of computationally efficient functionals, we provide a robust, practical, experimentally validated framework for using DFT to accurately predict EIFs of large organic molecules, including uncertainty estimates.

Abstract
A composite of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) and the second-order algebraic-diagrammatic construction [ADC(2)] approach is presented for efficient calculation of spectral properties of molecules. Our method can be regarded as a new excited-state double-hybrid (DH) approach or a dressed TDDFT scheme, but it can also be interpreted as an empirically tuned ADC(2) model. Several combinations of exchange-correlation functionals and spin-scaling schemes are explored. Our best-performing method includes the Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof exchange and Perdew's 1986 correlation functional and employs the scaled-opposite-spin approximation for the higher-order terms. The computation time of the new method scales as the fourth power of the system size, and an efficient cost-reduction approach is also presented, which further speeds up the calculations. Our benchmark calculations show that the proposed model outperforms not only the existing DH approaches and ADC(2) variants but also the considerably more expensive coupled-cluster methods.

Abstract
![]()
We
present a family of minimally empirical double-hybrid DFT functionals
parametrized against the very large and diverse GMTKN55 benchmark.
The very recently proposed ωB97M(2) empirical double hybrid
(with 16 adjustable parameters) has the lowest WTMAD2 (weighted mean
absolute deviation over GMTKN55) ever reported at 2.19 kcal/mol. However,
refits of the DSD-BLYP and DSD-PBEP86 spin-component-scaled, dispersion-corrected
double hybrids can achieve WTMAD2 values as low as 2.33 with the very
recent D4 dispersion correction (2.42 kcal/mol with the D3(BJ) dispersion
term) using just a handful of adjustable parameters. If we use full
DFT correlation in the initial orbital evaluation, the xrevDSD-PBEP86-D4
functional reaches WTMAD2 = 2.23 kcal/mol, statistically indistinguishable
from ωB97M(2) but using just four nonarbitrary adjustable parameters
(and three semiarbitrary ones). The changes from the original DSD
parametrizations are primarily due to noncovalent interaction energies
for large systems, which were undersampled in the original parametrization
set. With the new parametrization, same-spin correlation can be eliminated
at minimal cost in performance, which permits revDOD-PBEP86-D4 and
revDOD-PBE-D4 functionals that scale as N4 or even N3 with the size of the system.
Dependence of WTMAD2 for DSD functionals on the percentage of HF exchange
is roughly quadratic; it is sufficiently weak that any reasonable
value in the 64% to 72% range can be chosen semiarbitrarily. DSD-SCAN
and DOD-SCAN double hybrids involving the SCAN nonempirical meta-GGA
as the semilocal component have also been considered and offer a good
alternative if one wishes to eliminate either the empirical dispersion
correction or the same-spin correlation component. noDispSD-SCAN66
achieves WTMAD2 = 3.0 kcal/mol, compared to 2.7 kcal/mol for DOD-SCAN66-D4.
However, the best performance without dispersion corrections (WTMAD2
= 2.8 kcal/mol) is reached by revωB97X-2, a slight reparametrization
of the Chai–Head-Gordon range-separated double hybrid. Finally,
in the context of double-hybrid functionals, the very recent D4 dispersion
correction is clearly superior over D3(BJ).

Abstract
On the basis of our previous developments in the field of nonempirical double hybrids, we present here a new exchange-correlation functional based on a range-separated model for the exchange part and integrating a nonlocal perturbative correction to the electron correlation contribution. Named RSX-QIDH, the functional is free from any kind of empirical parametrization. Its range-separation parameter is set to recover the total energy of the hydrogen atom, thus eliminating the self-interaction error for this one-electron system. Subsequent tests on some relevant benchmark data sets confirm that the self-interaction error is particularly low for RSX-QIDH. This new functional provides also correct dissociation profiles for charged rare-gas dimers and very accurate ionization potentials directly from Kohn-Sham orbital energies. Above all, these good results are not obtained at the expense of other properties. Indeed, further tests on standard benchmarks show that RSX-QIDH is competitive with the more empirical ωB97X-2 double hybrid and outperforms the parent LC-PBE long-range corrected hybrid, thus underlining the important role of the nonlocal perturbative correlation.

Abstract
Isomerization and carbon chemistry in the gas phase are key processes in many scientific studies. Here we report on the isomerization process from linear [Formula: see text] to its monocyclic isomer. [Formula: see text] ions were trapped in an electrostatic ion beam trap and then excited with a laser pulse of precise energy. The neutral products formed upon photoexcitation were measured as a function of time after the laser pulse. It was found using a statistical model that, although the system is excited above its isomerization barrier energy, the actual isomerization from linear to monocyclic conformation takes place on a very long time scale of up to hundreds of microseconds. This finding may indicate a general phenomenon that can affect the interstellar medium chemistry of large molecule formation as well as other gas phase processes.

Abstract
The various factors influencing the accuracy of 13C NMR calculations using density functional theory (DFT), including the basis set, exchange-correlation (XC) functional, and isotropic shielding calculation method, are evaluated. A wide selection of XC functionals (over 70) were considered, and it was found that long-range corrected functionals offer a significant improvement over the other classes of functionals. Based on a thorough study, it is recommended that for calculating NMR chemical shifts (δ) one should use the CSGT method, the COSMO solvation model, and the LC-TPSSTPSS exchange-correlation functional in conjunction with the cc-pVTZ basis set. A selection of problems in natural product identification are considered in light of the newly recommended level of theory.

Abstract
A general optimization procedure towards the development and implementation of a new family of minimal parameter spin-component-scaled double-hybrid (mSD) density functional theory (DFT) is presented. The nature of the proposed exchange-correlation functional establishes a methodology with minimal empiricism. This new family of double-hybrid (DH) density functionals is demonstrated using the PBEPBE functional, illustrating the optimization procedure to the mSD-PBEPBE method, and the performance characteristics shown for a set of non-covalent complexes covering a broad regime of weak interactions. With only two parameters, mSD-PBEPBE and its cost-effective counterpart, RI-mSD-PBEPBE, show a mean absolute error of ca. 0.4 kcal mol-1 averaged over 66 weak interacting systems. Following a successive 2D-grid refinement for a CBS extrapolation of the coefficients, the optimization procedure can be recommended for the design and implementation of a variety of additional DH methods using any of the plethora of currently available functionals.

Abstract
For the first time, we combine time-dependent double-hybrid density functional approximations (TD-DHDFAs) for the calculation of electronic excitation energies with the concepts of spin-component and spin-opposite scaling (SCS/SOS) of electron-pair contributions to their nonlocal correlation components. Different flavors of this idea, ranging from standard SCS parameters to fully fitted parameter sets, are presented and tested on six different parent DHDFAs. For cross-validation, we assess those methods on three benchmark sets that cover small- to medium-sized chromophores (up to 78 atoms) and different excitation types. For this purpose, we also introduce new CC3 reference values for the popular Gordon benchmark set that we recommend using in future studies. Our results confirm that already the (unscaled) parent TD-DHDFAs are accurate and outperform some wave function methods. Further introduction of SCS/SOS eliminates extreme outliers, reduces deviation spans from reference values by up to 0.5 eV, aligns the performance of the Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA) to that of full TD calculations, and also enables a more balanced description of different excitation types. The best-performing TD-based methods in our cross validation have mean absolute deviations as low as 0.14 eV compared to the time- and resource-intensive CC3 approach. A very important finding is that we also obtained SOS variants with excellent performance, contrary to wave function based methods. This opens a future pathway to highly efficient methods for the optimization of excited-state geometries, particularly when paired with computing strategies such as the Laplace transform. We recommend our SCS- and SOS-based variants for further testing and subsequent applications.
