Formation of In-Plane Semiconductor-Metal Contacts in 2D Platinum Telluride by Converting PtTe2 to Pt2Te2

Monolayer PtTe₂ is a narrow gap semiconductor while Pt₂Te₂ is a metal. Here we show that the former can be transformed into the latter by reaction with vapor-deposited Pt atoms. The transformation occurs by nucleating the Pt₂Te₂ phase within PtTe₂ islands, so that a metal-semiconductor junction is formed. A flat band structure is found with the Fermi level of the metal aligning with that of the intrinsically p-doped PtTe₂. This is achieved by an interface dipole that accommodates the ∼0.2 eV shift in the work functions of the two materials. First-principles calculations indicate that the origin of the interface dipole is the atomic scale charge redistributions at the heterojunction. The demonstrated compositional phase transformation of a 2D semiconductor into a 2D metal is a promising approach for making in-plane metal contacts that are required for efficient charge injection and is of particular interest for semiconductors with large spin-orbit coupling, like PtTe₂.

Support work function as a descriptor and predictor for the charge and morphology of deposited Au nanoparticles

We show, using density functional theory calculations, that the charge, magnetic moment, and morphology of deposited Au nanoclusters can be tuned widely by doping the oxide support with aliovalent cations and anions. As model systems, we have considered Au_n (n = 1, 2, or 20) deposited on doped MgO and MgO/Mo supports. The supports have been substitutionally doped with varying concentrations θ of F, Al, N, Na, or Li. At θ = 2.78%, by varying the dopant species, we are able to tune the charge of the Au monomer between -0.84e and +0.21e, the Au dimer between -0.87e and -0.16e, and, most interestingly, Au₂₀ between -3.97e and +0.49e. These ranges can be further extended by varying θ. These changes in charge are correlated with changes in adsorption and/or cluster geometry and magnetic moment. We find that the work function Φ of the bare support is a good predictor and descriptor of both the geometry and charge of the deposited Au cluster; it can, therefore, be used to quickly estimate which dopant species and concentration can result in a desired cluster morphology and charge state. This is of interest as these parameters are known to significantly impact cluster reactivity, with positively or negatively charged clusters being preferred as catalysts for different chemical reactions. It is particularly noteworthy that the Na-doped and Li-doped supports succeed in making Au₂₀ positively charged, given the high electronegativity of Au.

Interfacial Charge Density and Its Connection to Adhesion and Frictional Forces

We derive a connection between the intrinsic tribological properties and the electronic properties of a solid interface. In particular, we show that the adhesion and frictional forces are dictated by the electronic charge redistribution occurring due to the relative displacements of the two surfaces in contact. We define a figure of merit to quantify such a charge redistribution and show that simple functional relations hold for a wide series of interactions including metallic, covalent, and physical bonds. This suggests unconventional ways of measuring friction by recording the evolution of the interfacial electronic charge during sliding. Finally, we explain that the key mechanism to reduce adhesive friction is to inhibit the charge flow at the interface and provide examples of this mechanism in common lubricant additives.

Highly-stable and -flexible graphene/(CF3SO2)2NH/graphene transparent conductive electrodes for organic solar cells

We first employ highly-stable and -flexible (CF₃SO₂)₂NH-doped graphene (TFSA/GR) and GR-encapsulated TFSA/GR (GR/TFSA/GR) transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs) prepared on polyethylene terephthalate substrates for flexible organic solar cells (OSCs). Compared to conventional indium tin oxide (ITO) TCEs, the TFSA-doped-GR TCEs show higher optical transmittance and larger sheet resistance. The TFSA/GR and GR/TFSA/GR TCEs show work functions of 4.89 ± 0.16 and 4.97 ± 0.18 eV, respectively, which are not only larger than those of the ITO TCEs but also indicate p-type doping of GR, and are therefore more suitable for anode TCEs of OSCs. In addition, typical GR/TFSA/GR-TCE OSCs are much more mechanically flexible than the ITO-TCE ones with their photovoltaic parameters being similar, as proved by bending tests as functions of cycle and curvature.

A DFT study of (WO3)3 nanoclusters adsorption on defective MgO ultrathin films on Ag(001)

The structures and electronic properties of (WO₃)₃ nanocluster adsorption on defective MgO ultrathin films supported on Ag(001) metal surfaces have been investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations including dispersion interactions.

A mechanism of Cu work function reduction in CsBr/Cu photocathodes

Thin films of CsBr deposited on Cu(100) have been proposed as next-generation photocathode materials for applications in particle accelerators and free-electron lasers. However, the mechanisms underlying an improved photocathode performance as well as their long-term stability remain poorly understood. We present Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations of the work function reduction following the application of CsBr thin film coatings to Cu photocathodes. The effects of both flat and rough interface and van der Waals forces are examined. Calculations suggest that CsBr films can reduce the Cu(100) work function by about 1.5 eV, which would explain the observed increase in quantum efficiency (QE) of coated vs. uncoated photocathodes. A model explaining the experimentally observed laser activation of photocathodes is provided whereby the photo-induced creation of Br vacancies and Cs-Br di-vacancies and their subsequent diffusion to the Cu/CsBr interface lead to a further increase in QE after a period of laser irradiation.
