Hydrogen motional disorder in crystalline iron group chloride dihydrates

The principal components and the relative orientation of the ²H paramagnetic shift and quadrupolar coupling tensors have been measured for the MCl₂·2D₂O family of compounds, M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu, using the two-dimensional shifting-d echo nuclear magnetic resonance experiment in order to determine (1) the degree of unpaired electron delocalization and (2) the number and location of crystallographically distinct hydrogen sites around oxygen and their fractional occupancies. Expressions for the molecular susceptibility of 3d ion systems, where the spin-orbit coupling is a weak perturbation onto the crystal field, are derived using the generalized Van Vleck equation and used to predict molecular susceptibilities. These predicted molecular susceptibilities are combined with various point dipole source configurations modeling unpaired electron delocalization to predict ²H paramagnetic shift tensors at potential deuterium sites. The instantaneous deuterium quadrupolar coupling and shift tensors are then combined with parameterized motional models, developed for trigonally (M = Mn, Fe, Co, and Cu) and pyramidally (M = Ni) coordinated D₂O ligands, to obtain the best fit of the experimental 2D spectra. Dipole sources placed onto metal nuclei with a small degree of delocalization onto the chlorine ligands yield good agreement with the experiment for M = Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni, while good agreement for CuCl₂·2D₂O is obtained with additional delocalization onto the oxygen. Our analysis of the salts with trigonally coordinated water ligands (M = Mn, Fe, Co, and Cu) confirms the presence of bisector flipping and the conclusions from neutron scattering measurements that hydrogen bonding to chlorine on two adjacent chains leads to the water molecule in the [M(D₂O)₂Cl₄] cluster being nearly coplanar with O-M-Cl involving the shortest metal-chlorine bonds of the cluster. In the case of NiCl₂·2D₂O, the experimental parameters were found to be consistent with a motional model where the D₂O ligands are pyramidally coordinated to the metal and undergo bisector flipping while the water ligand additionally hops between two orientations related by a 120° rotation about the Ni-O bond axis. The position of the three crystallographically distinct hydrogen sites in the unit cell was determined along with fractional occupancies. This restricted water ligand motion is likely due to van der Waals interactions and is concerted with the motion of neighboring ligands.

Brownian Translational Dynamics on a Flexible Surface: Nuclear Spin Relaxation of Fluid Membrane Phases

A general model for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation studies of fluid bilayer systems is introduced, combining a mesoscopic Brownian dynamics description of the bilayer with atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. An example is given for dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine in ²H₂O solvent and compared with the experiment. Experimental agreement is within a factor of 2 in the water relaxation rates, based on a postulated model with fixed parameters, which are largely available from the MD simulation. Relaxation rates are particularly sensitive to the translational diffusion of water perturbed by the interface dynamics and structure. Simulation results suggest that a notable deviation in the relaxation rates may follow from the commonly used small-angle approximation of bilayer undulation. The method has the potential to overcome the temporal and spatial limitations in computing NMR relaxation with atomistic MD, as well as the shortcomings of continuum models enabling a consistent description of experiments performed on a solvent lipid and added spin probes. This work opens for possibilities to understand relaxation processes involving systems such as micelles, multilamellar vesicles, red blood cells, and so forth at biologically relevant timescales in great detail.

Prediction of low-field nuclear singlet lifetimes with molecular dynamics and quantum-chemical property surface

Molecular dynamics and quantum chemistry methods are implemented to quantify nuclear spin-1/2 pair singlet-state relaxation rates. Illustrated is the relevant spin-internal-motion mechanism (SIM).

Kohn–Sham calculations of NMR shifts for paramagnetic 3d metal complexes: protocols, delocalization error, and the curious amide proton shifts of a high-spin iron(ii) macrocycle complex

Ligand chemical shifts (pNMR shifts) are analyzed using DFT. A large difference in the amide proton shifts of a high-spin Fe(ii) complex arises from O → Fe dative bonding which only transfers β spin density to the metal.

Temperature dependence of contact and dipolar NMR chemical shifts in paramagnetic molecules

Using a recently proposed equation for NMR nuclear magnetic shielding for molecules with unpaired electrons [A. Soncini and W. Van den Heuvel, J. Chem. Phys. 138, 021103 (2013)], equations for the temperature (T) dependent isotropic shielding for multiplets with an effective spin S equal to 1/2, 1, 3/2, 2, and 5/2 in terms of electron paramagnetic resonance spin Hamiltonian parameters are derived and then expanded in powers of 1/T. One simplifying assumption used is that a matrix derived from the zero-field splitting (ZFS) tensor and the Zeeman coupling matrix (g-tensor) share the same principal axis system. The influence of the rhombic ZFS parameter E is only investigated for S = 1. Expressions for paramagnetic contact shielding (from the isotropic part of the hyperfine coupling matrix) and pseudo-contact or dipolar shielding (from the anisotropic part of the hyperfine coupling matrix) are considered separately. The leading order is always 1/T. A temperature dependence of the contact shielding as 1/T and of the dipolar shielding as 1/T(2), which is sometimes assumed in the assignment of paramagnetic chemical shifts, is shown to arise only if S ≥ 1 and zero-field splitting is appreciable, and only if the Zeeman coupling matrix is nearly isotropic (Δg = 0). In such situations, an assignment of contact versus dipolar shifts may be possible based only on linear and quadratic fits of measured variable-temperature chemical shifts versus 1/T. Numerical data are provided for nickelocene (S = 1). Even under the assumption of Δg = 0, a different leading order of contact and dipolar shifts in powers of 1/T is not obtained for S = 3/2. When Δg is not very small, dipolar and contact shifts both depend in leading order in 1/T in all cases, with sizable contributions in order 1/T(n) with n = 2 and higher.
