Abstract
Excessive use of pesticides has brought about serious environmental risks worldwide that pose significant harm for human health. Herein, a series of metal-organic framework (MOF)-based gel capsules with a pitaya-like core-shell structure are constructed through a green polymerization strategy for pesticide detection and removal, namely ZIF-8/M-dbia/SA (M = Zn, Cd). Significantly, the ZIF-8/Zn-dbia/SA capsule exhibits sensitive detection of alachlor, a representative pre-emergence acetanilide pesticide, with a satisfactory detection limit of 0.23 μM. In addition, the MOF-based gel capsules can be extended to a universal visual platform for the noninvasive detection of pesticide residues with various MOFs, such as Eu-MOF, Tb-MOF, and Cu-MOF, and participating dye. Similar to pitaya, the ordered porous structure of MOF in ZIF-8/Zn-dbia/SA capsules offers cavity and open sites for removing pesticide from water with the maximum adsorption amount qmax of 61.1 mg·g-1 toward alachlor in a Langmuir model. Thereby, this work presents the universality of gel capsule self-assembly technologies, including the well-preserved visible fluorescence area and porosity of the different structurally diverse MOFs, offering an ideal strategy for water decontamination and food safety control fields.

Abstract
A series of 15 lanthanide-containing coordination polymers, both 3D- and 2D-networks, as well as complexes of Ln-trichlorides with 3-(3-pyridyl)pyrazole (3-PyPzH), were synthesized. A large structural diversity is observed depending on the ligand content: 3∞[Ln(3-PyPzH)Cl3], Ln = Eu and Gd, of sra topology, 2∞[Sm(3-PyPzH)Cl3], 2∞[Ln2(3-PyPzH)3Cl6]·2solv, Ln = Eu3+, Tb3+, Dy3+, Ho3+ and Er3+, solv = Tol and MeCN, of sql topology and 2∞[Ln(3-PyPzH2)Cl4], Ln = La and Nd, of hcb topology with salt like complexes of the formula [(3-PyPzH2)][Ln(3-PyPzH)2Cl4], Ln = Eu, Tb, Dy and Ho. The products were characterized by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, high-temperature X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetry (DTA/TG) combined with mass spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), IR-spectroscopy, UV-visible spectrophotometry, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility. Absorption spectroscopy shows ion-specific 4f-4f transitions that can be assigned to Sm3+, Eu3+, Dy3+, Ho3+ and Er3+ in a wide range from the UV-VIS to NIR region. An excellent antenna effect through ligand-metal energy transfer was observed in 2∞[Tb2(3-PyPzH)3Cl6]·2solv, leading to high efficiency of the luminescence indicated by a quantum yield up to 76%. Direct current magnetic susceptibility studies reveal the absence of interatomic interaction for Dy3+ and Er3+ and weak ferromagnetic interaction for Ho3+. Thermal analysis shows good stability up to 365 °C for 2∞[Ho2(3-PyPzH)3Cl6]·2MeCN.

Abstract
The combination of α-acetamidocinnamic acid (HACA) and different N, N,N and N,N,N pyridines (dPy) leads to crowded Zn(ii) metal centers. The increasing bulkiness competes with the chelation enhanced effect (CHEF) in the resulting quantum yields.

Abstract
In a one-pot self-assembly reaction of Co(OAc)2·4H2O, thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid (H2tdc) and four different bis(tridentate) polypyridyl spanning ligands under ambient conditions, a series of structurally diverse metal-organic frameworks has been synthesised and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction: {[Co2(tdc)2(tpbn)(H2O)2]·solvent}n (solvent = 2H2O, 1; solvent = 2CH3OH, 2H2O, 1a), {[Co2(tdc)2(tphn)]·solvent}n (solvent = H2O, 2; solvent = CH3OH, 2.5H2O, 2a), {[Co2(tdc)2(tpchn)(H2O)2]·solvent}n (solvent = 5H2O, 3; solvent = C2H5OH, 2H2O, 3a), and {[Co2(tdc)2(tpxn)]·solvent}n (solvent = 6H2O, 4; when no solvent, 4a), where tpbn (N,N',N'',N'''-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4-diaminobutane), tphn = N,N',N'',N'''-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,6-diaminohexane, tpchn = N,N'-(cyclohexane-1,4-diylbis(methylene))bis(1-(pyridin-2-yl)-N-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)methanamine) and tpxn = N,N'-(1,4-phenylenebis(methylene))bis(1-(pyridin-2-yl)-N-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)methanamine). There is a profound effect of the nature of spacer between the alkyl nitrogens in the spanning ligands (flexible vs. semiflexible) on the molecular structures of 1a-4a. The notable differences are (a) the binding mode of the tridentate part of polypyridyl ligands to the Co(ii) center is facial in 1a, 3a and 4a but meridional in 2a, (b) the Co(ii) centers in 1a-3a are hexacoordinated (with a coordinated water in 1a and 3a) but are pentacoordinated in 4a, and (c) the binding mode of tdc linker is bis(monodentate) in 1a, 3a and 4a but chelated in one end and monodentate in the other end in 2a. Thus, the overall framework structure of 1a, 2a, 3a and 4a is cis-decalin type 2D polymer, ladder-shaped 1D polymer, hexagonal 2D net and cis-decalin type 2D polymer, respectively. Their thermal stabilities have been established by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The presence of an unsaturated metal center in 4 has provided us an opportunity for its use as an efficient Lewis acid catalyst for the Knoevenagel condensation reaction of malononitrile with various aldehydes (100% conversion in 60 minutes with 2 mol% catalyst in methanol).

Abstract
Judicious structural design employing 2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde and 4-methylaniline was used to generate the Schiff base ligand (E)-4-methyl-N-((quinolin-2-yl)ethylidene)aniline (L). Five IIB complexes, namely, [ZnLCl2] (1), [ZnL(NO3)2] (2), [ZnL(OAc)2]3 (3), [CdL(OAc)2]3 (4), and [HgLCl2] (5) have been synthesized based on L. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that complexes 1, 3 and 4 exhibit 3D networks, whereas 2 and 5 form 2D layers and 1D chains, respectively. TD-DFT calculations show a good correlation with the UV-vis absorption assigned to π → π* intraligand transitions. Furthermore, complexes 1-5 displayed strong greenish luminescent emissions (518-524 nm) in the aggregate state but weak emissions in solution (aggregation-induced emission enhancement), which may be due to the existence of C-HCl/O hydrogen bonding and ππ stacking interactions, resulting in restriction of intramolecular rotation (RIR). Variable-concentration 1H NMR studies suggested that the aggregates undergo intramolecular changes in conformation due to intermolecular interactions. Moreover, the emission intensity and lifetime exhibited obvious increases induced by mechanical grinding and temperature reduction, which were also attributed to AIEE properties. Subsequently, complex 1 was incorporated into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), whereby 1-PMMA exhibited enhanced emission intensity (20-fold increase in comparison with that of 1), which offers opportunities for use in plastic greenhouses to increase leaf photosynthesis.

Abstract
The design and synthesis of functional coordination polymers is motivated not only by their structural beauty but also by their potential applications. Zn(II) and Cd(II) coordination polymers are promising candidates for producing photoactive materials because these d(10) metal ions not only possess a variety of coordination numbers and geometries, but also exhibit luminescence properties when bound to functional ligands. It is difficult to predict the final structure of such polymers because the assembly process is influenced by many subtle factors. Bis(imidazol-1-yl)-substituted alkane/benzene molecules are good bridging ligands because their flexibility allows them to bend and rotate when they coordinate to metal centres. Two new Zn(II) and Cd(II) coordination polymers based on mixed ligands, namely, poly[[μ2-1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene-κ(2)N(3):N(3')]bis(μ3-2,2-dimethylbutanoato-κ(3)O(1):O(4):O(4'))dizinc(II)], [Zn2(C6H8O4)2(C14H14N4)]n, and poly[[μ2-1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene-κ(2)N(3):N(3')]bis(μ3-2,2-dimethylbutanoato-κ(5)O(1),O(1'):O(4),O(4'):O(4))dicadmium(II)], [Cd2(C6H8O4)2(C14H14N4)]n, have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Both complexes crystallize in the monoclinic space group C2/c with similar unit-cell parameters and feature two-dimensional structures formed by the interconnection of S-shaped Zn(Cd)-2,2-dimethylsuccinate chains with 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene bridges. However, the Cd(II) and Zn(II) centres have different coordination numbers and the 2,2-dimethylsuccinate ligands display different coordination modes. Both complexes exhibit a blue photoluminescence in the solid state at room temperature.

Abstract
In this work, a rare 2D → 3D single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation (SCSC) is observed in metal-organic coordination complexes, which is triggered by thermal treatment. The 2D two-fold interpenetrating square lattice layer [Cd(IBA)2]n (1) is irreversibly converted into a 3D four-fold interpenetrating diamond framework {[Cd(IBA)2(H2O)]·2.5H2O}n (2) (HIBA = 4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzoic acid). Consideration is given to these two complexes with different interpenetrating structures and dimensionality, and their influence on photovoltaic properties are studied. Encouraged by the UV-visible absorption and HOMO-LUMO energy states matched for sensitizing TiO2, the two complexes are employed in combination with N719 in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) to compensate absorption in the ultraviolet and blue-violet region, offset competitive visible light absorption of I3(-) and reducing charge the recombination of injected electrons. After co-sensitization with 1 and 2, the device co-sensitized by 1/N719 and 2/N719 to yield overall efficiencies of 7.82% and 8.39%, which are 19.94% and 28.68% higher than that of the device sensitized only by N719 (6.52%). Consequently, high dimensional interpenetrating complexes could serve as excellent co-sensitizers and have application in DSSCs.
