Abstract
Continuing our investigation of catalytic oxo/imido heterometathesis as novel water-free method for C=N bond construction, we report here the application of classical transition metal oxides dispersed on silica (MOx/SiO2, M=V, Mo, W) as cheap, robust and readily available alternative to the catalysts prepared via Surface Organometallic Chemistry (SOMC). The oxide materials demonstrated activity in heterometathetical imidation of ketones, WO3/SiO2 being the most efficient. We also describe a new well-defined supported W imido complex (≡SiO)W(=NMes)2(Me2Pyr) (Mes=2,4,6-Me3C6H2, Me2Pyr=2,5-dimethylpyrrolyl) and characterize it with SOMC protocols, which allowed us to identify the position of W on the oxo/imido heterometathesis activity scale (Mo

Abstract
Immobilized coordination compounds of Lewis acidic metals are powerful catalytic components of systems for the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides that do not require sophisticated coordination frameworks to harness the metal center and modulate its activity. Surface organometallic chemistry (SOMC) is a valuable methodology to prepare well-defined and site-isolated surface complexes and coordination compounds on metal oxides, with ligand environments easily adjustable to a targeted catalytic reaction. In this work, the SOMC methodology is applied to prepare SmII, YbII, and SmIII alkoxide surface complexes on periodic mesoporous (organo)silica of distinct pore symmetry/size for application in the CO2 cycloaddition reaction. The surface complexes are readily accessible by the grafting of the bis(trimethylsilyl)amide precursors LnII[N(SiMe3)2]2(THF)2 (Ln = Sm, Yb) and SmIII[N(SiMe3)2]3, followed by ligand exchange with alcohols (ethanol and neopentanol). The use of periodic mesoporous supports led to hybrid materials with relatively high surface areas and pore sizes, affording good performance in CO2 capture and in the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides under mild conditions (60-80 °C, 1-10 bar). In terms of catalytic performance, recyclability, and low amount of added nucleophile TBAX (X = Br, I), the most active materials prepared in this work compare well to a variety of previously reported SOMC-derived surface complexes and to other heterogeneous Lewis acids displaying more elaborate ligand environments.

Abstract
Well-defined organometallics supported on high surface area oxides are promising heterogeneous catalysts. An important design factor in these materials is how the metal interacts with the functionalities on an oxide support, commonly anionic X-type ligands derived from the reaction of an organometallic M-R with an -OH site on the oxide. The metal can either form a covalent M-O bond or form an electrostatic M+⋯-O ion-pair, which impacts how well-defined organometallics will interact with substrates in catalytic reactions. A less common reaction pathway involves the reaction of a Lewis site on the oxide with the organometallic, resulting in abstraction to form an ion-pair, which is relevant to industrial olefin polymerization catalysts. This Feature Article views the spectrum of reactivity between an organometallic and an oxide through the prism of Brønsted and/or Lewis acidity of surface sites and draws analogies to the molecular frame where Lewis and Brønsted acids are known to form reactive ion-pairs. Applications of the well-defined sites developed in this article are also discussed.

Abstract
Protonolysis reactions between dimethylamido titanium(IV) catecholate [Ti(CAT)(NMe2)2]2 and neopentanol or tris(tert-butoxy)silanol gave catecholato-bridged dimers [(Ti(CAT)(OCH2tBu)2)(HNMe2)]2 and [Ti(CAT){OSi(OtBu)3}2(HNMe2)2]2, respectively. Analogous reactions using the dimeric dimethylamido titanium(IV) (3,6-di-tert-butyl)catecholate [Ti(CATtBu2-3,6)(NMe2)2]2 yielded the monomeric Ti(CATtBu2-3,6)(OCH2tBu)2(HNMe2)2 and Ti(CATtBu2-3,6)[OSi(OtBu)3]2(HNMe2)2. The neopentoxide complex Ti(CATtBu2-3,6)(OCH2tBu)2(HNMe2)2 engaged in further protonolysis reactions with Si-OH groups and was consequentially used for grafting onto mesoporous silica KIT-6. Upon immobilization, the surface complex [Ti(CATtBu2-3,6)(OCH2tBu)2(HNMe2)2]@[KIT-6] retained the bidentate chelating geometry of the catecholato ligand. This convergent grafting strategy was compared with a sequential and an aqueous approach, which gave either a mixture of bidentate chelating species with a bipodally anchored Ti(IV) center along with other physisorbed surface species or not clearly identifiable surface species. Extension of the convergent and aqueous approaches to anatase mesoporous titania (m-TiO2) enabled optical and electronic investigations of the corresponding surface species, revealing that the band-gap reduction is more pronounced for the bidentate chelating species (convergent approach) than for that obtained via the aqueous approach. The applied methods include X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and solid-state UV/vis spectroscopy. The energy-level alignment for the surface species from the aqueous approach, calculated from experimental data, accounts for the well-known type II excitation mechanism, whereas the findings indicate a distinct excitation mechanism for the bidentate chelating surface species of the material [Ti(CATtBu2-3,6)(OCH2tBu)2(HNMe2)2]@[m-TiO2].

Abstract
Understanding how a ligand affects the steric and electronic properties of a metal is the cornerstone of the inorganic chemistry enterprise. What happens when the ligand is an extended surface? This question is central to the design and implementation of state-of-the-art functional materials containing transition metals. This perspective will describe how these two very different sets of extended surfaces can form well-defined coordination complexes with metals. In the Green formalism, functionalities on oxide surfaces react with inorganics to form species that contain X-type or LX-type interactions between the metal and the oxide. Carbon surfaces are neutral L-type ligands; this perspective focuses on carbons that donate six electrons to a metal. The nature of this interaction depends on the curvature, and thereby orbital overlap, between the metal and the extended π-system from the nanocarbon.

Abstract
A series of tris(trimethylsilylmethyl) yttrium donor adduct complexes was synthesized and fully characterized by X-ray diffraction, 1H/13C/29Si/31P/89Y heteronuclear NMR and FTIR spectroscopies as well as elemental analyses. Treatment of Y(CH2SiMe3)3(thf)x with various donors Do led to complete (Do = TMEDA, DMAP) and partial displacement of THF (Do = NHCiPr, DMPE). Exceptionally large 89Y NMR shifts to low field were observed for the new complexes. Complexes Y(CH2SiMe3)3(tmeda) and Y(CH2SiMe3)3(dmpe)(thf) were chosen to perform surface organometallic chemistry, due to a comparatively higher thermal stability and the availability of the 31P nucleus as a spectroscopic probe, respectively. Mesoporous nanoparticles of the MCM-48-type were synthesized and used as a 3rd generation silica support. The parent and hybrid materials were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction, solid-state-NMR spectroscopy, DRIFTS, elemental analyses, N2-physisorption, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The presence of surface-bound yttrium alkyl moieties was further proven by the reaction with carbon dioxide. Quantification of the surface silanol population by means of HN(SiHMe2)2-promoted surface silylation is shown to be superior to titration with lithium alkyl LiCH2SiMe3.

Abstract
The activation and catalytic conversion of CO2 is a current topic relating to molecular chemistry and materials science alike. As a transdisciplinary field of research, surface organometallic chemistry (SOMC) might be applicable to perform synergistically, thus striking a new path in sustainable chemistry. Both ceric and cerous rare-earth-metal pyrazolates, which were recently shown to reversibly insert CO2 and to promote the catalytic cycloaddition of epoxides and carbon dioxide, were grafted onto large-pore mesoporous silica SBA-15500, thermally pretreated at 500 °C. The obtained hybrid materials [Ce(Me2pz)4]2@SBA-15500, Ce(Me2pz)4(thf)@SBA-15500, Ce4(Me2pz)12@SBA-15500, and [Ce(Me2pz)3(thf)]2@SBA-15500 (Me2pz = 3,5-dimethylpyrazolato) were characterized by DRIFTS (diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy), solid-state 1H/13C NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, ICP/OES, and N2 physisorption. The lanthanum(III)-based material [La(Me2pz)3(thf)]2@SBA-15500 was synthesized for better assessment of the cerous materials being highly sensitive to oxidation. To mimic ceric surface species, Ce[OSi(OtBu)3]3Cl was treated with 1 equiv of K(Me2pz), generating the mixed pyrazolyl/siloxy complex KCe[OSi(OtBu)3]4(Me2pz) featuring a cerium(IV)-bonded terminal pyrazolato ligand. All hybrid materials show efficient and reversible carbon dioxide uptake of maximum 20 wt % in the solid state. When combined with tetra-n-butylammonium bromide (TBAB), the hybrid materials catalyze the cycloaddition of CO2 and epoxides, displaying good conversion of various epoxides and reusability.

Abstract
The homoleptic pyrazolate complexes [CeIII 4 (Me2 pz)12 ] and [CeIV (Me2 pz)4 ]2 quantitatively insert CO2 to give [CeIII 4 (Me2 pz⋅CO2 )12 ] and [CeIV (Me2 pz⋅CO2 )4 ], respectively (Me2 pz=3,5-dimethylpyrazolato). This process is reversible for both complexes, as observed by in situ IR and NMR spectroscopy in solution and by TGA in the solid state. By adjusting the molar ratio, one molecule of CO2 per [CeIV (Me2 pz)4 ] complex could be inserted to give trimetallic [Ce3 (Me2 pz)9 (Me2 pz⋅CO2 )3 (thf)]. Both the cerous and ceric insertion products catalyze the formation of cyclic carbonates from epoxides and CO2 under mild conditions. In the absence of epoxide, the ceric catalyst is prone to reduction by the co-catalyst tetra-n-butylammonium bromide (TBAB).

Abstract
The new bisamido aluminum species [AlCl{N(SiMe3)2}2(THF)] (1) was prepared and fully characterized by 27Al and 35Cl solid-state NMR, along with X-ray diffraction studies. 1 was grafted on silica partially dehydroxylated at 700 °C, affording silica-supported Al species. The resulting material (2) was characterized by IR, elemental analysis and 1H, 13C and 27Al solid-state MAS NMR. The 1D and 2D 27Al MAS NMR studies showed the occurrence of two types of species, where the Al center adopts a tetracoordinated coordination sphere, with as an additional coordinated Lewis base, either a THF ligand or a silica-surface siloxane moiety. DFT calculations allowed understanding the grafting mechanism and the spectroscopic properties of the material.

Abstract
Grafting Ti(=NtBu)(Me2 Pyr)2 (py)2 (Me2 Pyr= 2,5-dimethylpyrrolyl, py=pyridine) onto the surface of silica partially dehydroxylated at 700 °C gives the well-defined silica-supported Ti imido complex (≡SiO)Ti(=NtBu)(Me2 Pyr)(py)2 , which is fully characterized by IR and solid-state NMR spectroscopy as well as elemental and mass balance analyses. While stoichiometric imido-transfer reactivity is typical for Ti imides, the obtained surface complex is unique in that it enables catalytic transformations involving Ti imido and oxo intermediates. In particular, it efficiently catalyzes imidation of carbonyl compounds with N-sulfinylamines by oxo/imido heterometathesis.

Abstract
Indium-modified mondisperse ellipsoid-/platelet-like large-pore periodic mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MMSNs) SBA-15 have been prepared via molecular grafting of In[N(SiMe3)2]3. Surface ligand exchange led to the formation of heteroleptic In species, and the resulting surface In species were converted into crystalline In2O3 nanoparticles by calcination.

Abstract
A series of rare-earth metal diisopropylamide complexes has been obtained via salt metathesis employing LnCl3(THF)x and lithium (LDA) or sodium diisopropylamide (NDA) in n-hexane. Reactions with AM : Ln ratios ≥3 gave ate complexes (AM)Ln(NiPr2)4(THF)n (n = 1, 2; Ln = Sc, Y, La, Lu; AM = Li, Na) in good yields. For smaller rare-earth metal centres such as scandium and lutetium, a Li : Ln ratio = 2.5 accomplished ate-free tris(amido) complexes Ln(NiPr2)3(THF). The chloro-bridged dimeric derivatives [Ln(NiPr2)2(μ-Cl)(THF)]2 (Ln = Sc, Y, La, Lu) could be obtained in high yields for Li : Ln = 1.6-2. The product resulting from the Li : La = 1 : 1.6 reaction revealed a crystal structure containing two different molecules in the crystal lattice, [La(NiPr2)2(THF)(μ-Cl)]2·La(NiPr2)3(THF)2. Recrystallization of the chloro-bridged dimers led to the formation of the monomeric species Ln(NiPr2)2Cl(THF)2 (Ln = Sc, Lu) and La(NiPr2)3(THF)2. The reaction of YCl3 and LDA with Li : Y = 2 in the absence of THF gave a bimetallic ate complex LiY(NiPr2)4 with a chain-like structure. For scandium, the equimolar reactions with LDA or NDA yielded crystals of tetrametallic mono(amido) species, {[Sc(NiPr2)Cl2(THF)]2(LiCl)}2 and [Sc(NiPr2)Cl2(THF)]4, respectively. Depending on the Ln(iii) size, AM, and presence of a donor solvent, ate complexes (AM)Ln(NiPr2)4(THF)n show distinct dynamic behaviour as revealed by variable temperature NMR spectroscopy. The presence of weak LnCH(iPr) β-agostic interactions, as indicated by Ln-N-C angles <105°, is corroborated by DFT calculations and NBO analysis.

Abstract
The grafting and the postgrafting functionalization of lanthanide ions on commercial amorphous silica have been herein carried out by using as a precursor the terbium N,N-dibutylcarbamato derivative [Tb(O2CNBu2)3]. The reaction of the complex with the surface silanols involved only a fraction of the carbamato ligands. The following protolytic substitution of the residual carbamato ligands was carried out by exploiting the Brønsted's acidity of the β-diketone dibenzoylmethane (Hdbm), in view of the antenna effect of the β-diketonato groups, which are commonly used in lanthanide photoluminescence studies. The reaction proceeded at room temperature in a clean and easy way affording the introduction of the chosen functionality in the lanthanide coordination sphere. The same procedure has been followed by using as a precursor the X-ray characterized heterometallic N,N-dibutylcarbamato complex [NH2Bu2]2[Ln4(CO3)(O2CNBu2)12] (Ln = Eu, Tb, Tm). In both cases, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy evidenced the chemical implantation of the lanthanide ions on the silica surface, and photoluminescence studies pointed out the potentiality of the proposed synthetic approach in the preparation of highly luminescent materials.

Abstract
Trivalent Eu[N(SiHMe2)2]3(THF)2 can easily be synthesized by applying a routine salt metathesis protocol (EuCl3(THF)2 and 3 equiv. of Li[N(SiHMe2)2] in n-hexane) which crystallizes isotypically to its analogues of the rare-earth metal series (space group P21/c). Transsilylamination of Eu[N(SiMe3)2]2(THF)2 with a slight excess of HN(SiHMe2)2 in n-hexane-THF yields the divalent trinuclear compound Eu{[μ-N(SiHMe2)2]2Eu[N(SiHMe2)2](THF)}2, the solid-state structure of which differs significantly from the samarium and ytterbium analogues by showing three unique molecules in the asymmetric unit of which one is related to the two others by an inversion. Using crude Eu[N(SiMe3)2]3 in transsilylamination reactions with HN(SiHMe2)2 in n-hexane afforded n-hexane-insoluble trivalent ate complexes {MEu[N(SiHMe2)2]4}n (M = Na, K) depending on the synthesis conditions of Eu[N(SiMe3)2]3. Performing the transsilylamination of Eu[N(SiMe3)2]3 with a large excess of HN(SiHMe2)2 at elevated temperatures gave reproducibly the donor-free, mixed-valent, trinuclear compound Eu(II){[μ-N(SiHMe2)2]Eu(III)[N(SiHMe2)2]3}2 in good yield.

Abstract
The dihydride complexes [IrH2(POCOP)] (1a) and [IrH2(PCP)] (1b) (POCOP = 1,3-bis((di-tert-butylphosphino)oxy)benzene; PCP = 1,3-bis((di-tert-butylphosphino)methyl)benzene) react with the surface silanols of mesoporous amorphous silica (SBA-15) to give H2 and the silica-grafted, 16-electron iridium(III) monohydride species [IrH(O-SBA-15)(pincer)] (2a and 2b). These materials contain a single iridium(III) species, that is a highly dispersed, coordinatively unsaturated siloxo hydride complex, as indicated by solid-state spectroscopic data. The siloxo complexes [IrH((i)Bu-POSS)(POCOP)] (3a) and [IrH((i)Bu-POSS)(PCP)] (3b) ((i)Bu-POSS = OSi8O12(i)Bu7) were prepared as soluble analogues of 2a and 2b to support their spectroscopic characterization. The coordinatively unsaturated, 16-electron species 2a and 2b react with CO to give the six-coordinate iridium(III) adducts [IrH(O-SBA-15)(CO)(POCOP)] (7a) and [IrH(O-SBA-15)(CO)(PCP)] (7b). Due to dissimilar electronic properties of the pincer ligands, 7a undergoes reductive elimination of the silanol forming the Ir(I) complex [Ir(CO)(POCOP)] (8a), whereas 7b is stable in oxidation state of III. The homogeneous siloxo carbonyl complexes [IrH((i)Bu-POSS)(CO)(POCOP)] (9a), [IrH((i)Bu-POSS)(CO)(PCP)] (9b), and [IrH(OSiMe3)(CO)(POCOP)] (11a) were prepared to substantiate the reactivity and the characterization of the silica grafted species.
