Stable CAAC-Triazenes: A New Nitrogen Ligand System With Donor and Conformational Flexibility, and With Application in Olefin Activation Catalysis

N-heterocyclic imines such as pyridylidene amines impart high catalytic activity when coordinated to a transition metal, largely imposed by their electronic flexibility. Here, this donor flexibility has been applied for the first time to CAAC-based systems through the synthesis of CAAC-triazenes. These new ligands offer a larger π-conjugation that extends from the N-heterocyclic carbene through three nitrogens rather than just one, as observed in N-heterocyclic imines. We demonstrate the straightforward synthesis of three new CAAC-triazenes containing different substituents on the terminal triazene nitrogen. These compounds are remarkably stable up to 120 °C without loss of N2 as typically observed with similar triazenes. E-to-Z isomerization within the triazene is instigated by UV light and is partially reversible dependent on the triazene substituent. The quinoline-substituted CAAC-triazene 1-Q has been applied as an L,L'-type ligand in the synthesis of [PdCl2(1-Q)], [PdCl(Me)(1-Q)] and [Pd(Me)(H2O(1-Q)]+. E-to-Z ligand isomerization also occurs when coordinated to PdCl2, providing access to on-metal manipulation. The cationic complex [PdMe(H2O)(1-Q)]+ is a precatalyst for oligomerization of ethylene to form initially 2-butene and subsequently linear and branched C8-C12 products from butene activation. Moreover, isomerization of 1-hexene takes place efficiently with exceptionally low catalyst loading (10 ppm) and up to 74,000 turnover numbers.

Novel Oxidovanadium Complexes with Redox-Active R-Mian and R-Bian Ligands: Synthesis, Structure, Redox and Catalytic Properties

A new monoiminoacenaphthenone 3,5-(CF₃)₂C₆H₃-mian (complex 2) was synthesized and further exploited, along with the already known monoiminoacenaphthenone dpp-mian, to obtain oxidovanadium(IV) complexes [VOCl₂(dpp-mian)(CH₃CN)] (3) and [VOCl(3,5-(CF₃)₂C₆H₃-bian)(H₂O)][VOCl₃(3,5-(CF₃)₂C₆H₃-bian)]·2.85DME (4) from [VOCl₂(CH₃CN)₂(H₂O)] (1) or [VCl₃(THF)₃]. The structure of all compounds was determined using X-ray structural analysis. The vanadium atom in these structures has an octahedral coordination environment. Complex 4 has an unexpected structure. Firstly, it contains 3,5-(CF₃)₂C₆H₃-bian instead of 3,5-(CF₃)₂C₆H₃-mian. Secondly, it has a binuclear structure, in contrast to 3, in which two oxovanadium parts are linked to each other through V=O···V interaction. This interaction is non-covalent in origin, according to DFT calculations. In structures 2 and 3, non-covalent π-π staking interactions between acenaphthene moieties of the neighboring molecules (distances are 3.36–3.40 Å) with an estimated energy of 3 kcal/mol were also found. The redox properties of the obtained compounds were studied using cyclic voltammetry in solution. In all cases, the reduction processes initiated by the redox-active nature of the mian or bian ligand were identified. The paramagnetic nature of complexes 3 and 4 has been proven by EPR spectroscopy. Complexes 3 and 4 exhibited high catalytic activity in the oxidation of alkanes and alcohols with peroxides. The yields of products of cyclohexane oxidation were 43% (complex 3) and 27% (complex 4). Based on the data regarding the study of regio- and bond-selectivity, it was concluded that hydroxyl radicals play the most crucial role in the reaction. The initial products in the reactions with alkanes are alkyl hydroperoxides, which are easily reduced to their corresponding alcohols by the action of triphenylphosphine (PPh₃). According to the DFT calculations, the difference in the catalytic activity of 3 and 4 is most likely associated with a different mechanism for the generation of ^●OH radicals. For complex 4 with electron-withdrawing CF₃ substituents at the diimine ligand, an alternative mechanism, different from Fenton’s and involving a redox-active ligand, is assumed.

Molybdenum(ii) complexes with p-substituted BIAN ligands: synthesis, characterization, biological activity and computational study

New complexes [Mo(η3-C3H5)X(CO)2(4-Y-BIAN)] (4-Y-BIAN = bis(4-Y-phenyl)-acenaphthenequinonediimine), with X = Br and Y = H, Me, OMe, COOH and X = Cl, Y = OMe, as well as the cation with X = NCMe and Y = OMe were synthesized, expanding the scope of this family. Two single crystal X-ray structures (X = Br, Y = Me, OMe) display a less symmetric arrangement (axial isomer), where one N donor atom is trans to the allyl group and the second to one CO. DFT studies showed similar energies for the two possible isomers of the complexes, with a very small preference for the observed axial isomer. The HOMO of the complexes is localized in the metal and the HOMO-1 of the oxidized species has a contribution from the BIAN ligand, while the LUMO is fully localized in BIAN. Electrochemical studies showed one process corresponding to the oxidation of Mo(ii) to Mo(iii) for complexes with X = Br, Y = H, Me, and two oxidation reactions for those with X = Br, Y = Cl, OMe, while the COOH derivative exhibited no oxidation wave. The antitumor effect of the complexes with X = Br was tested in cancer lines, and the H and OMe complexes were particularly active, with EC50 values below 8 μM in HeLa cell lines. The DNA binding constants determined by titration experiments were comparable with those of doxorubicin and ethidium bromide, suggesting a mechanism of action based on intercalation in DNA.

The contradictory effect of the methoxy-substituent in palladium-catalyzed ethylene/methyl acrylate cooligomerization

Three new α-diimines bearing at least one methoxy group on one aryl ring were investigated. The introduction of the methoxy substituent on the ancillary ligand had a remarkable effect on the catalytic performances of the relevant palladium complexes.

Selective catalytic two-step process for ethylene glycol from carbon monoxide

Upgrading C1 chemicals (for example, CO, CO/H₂, MeOH and CO₂) with C–C bond formation is essential for the synthesis of bulk chemicals. In general, these industrially important processes (for example, Fischer Tropsch) proceed at drastic reaction conditions (>250 °C; high pressure) and suffer from low selectivity, which makes high capital investment necessary and requires additional purifications. Here, a different strategy for the preparation of ethylene glycol (EG) via initial oxidative coupling and subsequent reduction is presented. Separating coupling and reduction steps allows for a completely selective formation of EG (99%) from CO. This two-step catalytic procedure makes use of a Pd-catalysed oxycarbonylation of amines to oxamides at room temperature (RT) and subsequent Ru- or Fe-catalysed hydrogenation to EG. Notably, in the first step the required amines can be efficiently reused. The presented stepwise oxamide-mediated coupling provides the basis for a new strategy for selective upgrading of C1 chemicals.

Easy entry into reduced Ar-BIANH2 compounds: a new class of quinone/hydroquinone-type redox-active couples with an easily tunable potential

Ar-BIANH2 bearing different substituents on the aryl rings have been synthesized in high yield by reduction of the corresponding bis(aryl)acenaphthenequinonediimine (Ar-BIAN) compounds. The structure of p-CH3 C6 H4 -BIANH2 in the solid state was determined by X-ray diffraction. An exhaustive voltammetric investigation of the two parallel BIAN and BIANH2 series afforded a first rationalization of the redox properties of these molecules, highlighting their analogies with quinone/hydroquinone systems. Such analogies, in combination with the much more negative reduction potential range of Ar-BIAN compounds with respect to quinones, can afford to extend the range of reduction potentials so far obtainable by the use of quinones.
