Abstract
BACKGROUND Iron ion (Fe3+) is essential for the environment and human health. Detecting Fe3+ in water is crucial, making high-performance detection a key objective. Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks with abundant functional sites have been deemed a promising fluorescence sensor for Fe3+ detection. Currently, most metal-organic framework-based sensors for Fe3+ detection have cumbersome and time-consuming synthesis procedures and long detection times, which greatly limits their practical application. This study aims to construct a hybrid lanthanide metal-organic frameworks-based fluorescence sensor for Fe3+ detection that promises simple and rapid iron ion quantification in water. RESULTS A novel hybrid lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (ECTMNs) was synthesized in one step using a solvothermal method with only 4 h. The frameworks comprise two metal ions, cerium and europium, serving as metal centers, and 4,4,4,4-(Porphine-5,10,15,20-tetrayl) tetrakis (TCPP) as an organic ligand. With the addition of Fe3+, the host-guest reaction occurred between Fe3+ and ECTMNs probe, leading to the gradual fluorescence burst of ECTMNs probe. A strong linear correlation between ECTMNs fluorescence intensity and Fe3+ concentration (1-90 μM) makes it a reliable sensor for Fe3+ monitoring with a detection limit of 0.3 μM. Moreover, the method was used to analyze real samples (tap water and river water), showing good recoveries (92-98 %) and low relative standard deviations (3.96-6.11 %), making it a promising option for rapidly detecting Fe3+. SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY A rapid synthesis protocol for hybrid lanthanide metal-organic frameworks is proposed in this study. The obtained ECTMNs exhibits good water solubility, high stability, and specificity for Fe3+. Based on ECTMNs, an innovative fluorescence sensor is established for selectively detecting Fe3+ in water, which is a simple operation method with a low detection limit and short sensing time. It provides a novel method for accurately and rapidly detecting Fe3+ in environmental pollution and water safety monitoring.

Abstract
In this study, a novel easy-to-prepare diethylaminophenol appended pyrimidine bis hydrazone (HD) has been designed and developed. The probe exhibits excellent sequential sensing characteristics towards Al3+ and PPi ions. The emission studies, various spectroscopic techniques and lifetime results have been utilized to understand the binding mechanism of HD with Al3+ ions and, to discover the specificity as well as the efficacy of the probe in sensing Al3+ ions. The good association constant in addition to the lower detection limit values makes the probe effective for the detection of Al3+. The in-situ produced HD-Al3+ ensemble could consecutively detect PPi via a turn-off fluorescence response and the selectivity and sensitivity characteristics of the generated ensemble towards PPi were described based on the demetallation approach. The overall sensing property of HD was perfectly employed for constructing logic gates, real water, and tablet applications. Paper strips, as well as cotton-swab experiments, were also conducted inorder to check the practical utility of the synthesized probe.

Abstract
A new coumarin based fluorescent switch PCEH is fabricated which displays high selective sensing towards Al3+ among other metal cations at physiological pH. On gradual addition of Al3+, PCEH shows a brilliant "turn-on" emission enhancement in MeOH/H2O (4/1, v/v) solution. This new fluorescent switch is proven to be a reversible probe by gradual addition of F- into the PCEH-Al3+ solution. Detection limit as well as binding constant values are calculated to be in the order of 10-9 M and 104 M-1 respectively. We have also explored its potential as a biomarker in the application of live cell imaging using breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231 cell).

Abstract
A new ratiometric fluorescent probe (E)-2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-3-(8-methoxyquinolin-2-yl)acrylonitrile (HQCN) was synthesised by the perfect blending of quinoline and a 2-benzothiazoleacetonitrile unit. In a mixed aqueous solution, HQCN reacts with hydrazine (N2H4) to give a new product 2-(hydrazonomethyl)-8-methoxyquinoline along with the liberation of the 2-benzothiazoleacetonitrile moiety. In contrast, the reaction of hypochlorite ions (OCl-) with the probe gives 8-methoxyquinoline-2-carbaldehyde. In both cases, the chemodosimetric approaches of hydrazine and hypochlorite selectively occur at the olefinic carbon but give two different products with two different outputs, as observed from the fluorescence study exhibiting signals at 455 nm and 500 nm for hydrazine and hypochlorite, respectively. A UV-vis spectroscopy study also depicts a distinct change in the spectrum of HQCN in the presence of hydrazine and hypochlorite. The hydrazinolysis of HQCN exhibits a prominent chromogenic as well as ratiometric fluorescence change with a 165 nm left-shift in the fluorescence spectrum. Similarly, the probe in hand (HQCN) can selectively detect hypochlorite in a ratiometric manner with a shift of 120 nm, as observed from the fluorescence emission spectra. HQCN can detect hydrazine and OCl- as low as 2.25 × 10-8 M and 3.46 × 10-8 M, respectively, as evaluated from the fluorescence experiments again. The excited state behaviour of the probe HQCN and the chemodosimetric products with hydrazine and hypochlorite are studied by the nanosecond time-resolved fluorescence technique. Computational studies (DFT and TDDFT) with the probe and the hydrazine and hypochlorite products were also performed. The observations made in the fluorescence imaging studies with human blood cells manifest that HQCN can be employed to monitor hydrazine and OCl- in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). It is indeed a rare case that the single probe HQCN is found to be successfully able to detect hydrazine and hypochlorite in PBMCs, with two different outputs.

Abstract
Detection of biological phosphate is very important for environmental and health care applications. In this study, a new ratiometric fluorescent probe (E)-N'-(3-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-2-hydroxybenzylidene) picolinohydrazide (BTP) is developed and exhibits a prominent excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer (ESIPT) mechanism. The probe BTP undergoes a unique phosphate induced hydrolytic reaction in mixed aqueous solution which produces a colorimetric change associated with a huge red-shift of ∼130 nm in the UV-visible absorption spectrum. Initially, BTP exhibits a strong fluorescence emission as the ESIPT process is 'on' and the tautomeric hydrogen remains flexible and is free to give two tautomeric forms. Eventually, after the addition of PO43-, the two tautomeric forms break and thereby shift the equilibrium towards the 'enol' form. The phosphate ion binds with BTP which is associated with a ratiometric change and accounts for an enhancement in the fluorescence intensity with a large blue shift and the limit of detection value of 8.33 × 10-8 M in a mixed aqueous medium. The binding constant (1.92 × 105 M-1) proportionally reflects the stability of the complexation between the binding sites of BTP with the guest PO43- anion. The probable mechanism is supported by the NMR spectroscopy studies. The sensing phenomenon is found to be reversible towards Zn2+ and thus the sensor beautifully mimics the INHIBIT logic gate. Observations have been made in fluorescence imaging studies with human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) which indicates that BTP can be employed to successfully monitor the phosphate ion in human PBMCs.

Abstract
A novel dual-functional probe N'-(2-hydroxy-5-((4,7,7-trimethyl-3-oxobicyclo[2.2.1] heptan-2-ylidene)methyl) benzylidene)picolinohydrazide (PSH) was constructed from natural camphor. This probe showed strong yellow-green fluorescence at 535 nm due to its aggregation-induced emission (AIE) feature. Interestingly, the probe PSH displayed a significant turn-on fluorescence response towards Al3+ (green fluorescence at 500 nm) and Zn2+ (orange fluorescence at 555 nm) at two different emissive channels. The detection limits of PSH towards Al3+ and Zn2+ were found to be 12.1 nM and 14.2 nM, respectively. PSH exhibited excellent selectivity and anti-interference performance and could distinguish between Al3+/Zn2+ and identify whether Zn2+ exists in the PSH-Al3+ complex by adding ATP. The binding mechanisms between PSH and Al3+/Zn2+ ions were supported by 1H NMR, HRMS analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Based on its outstanding sensing properties, the probe PSH was used to establish molecular logic function gates. Moreover, the probe PSH could be applied to detect Al3+ and Zn2+ in real environmental water, and fluorescence detection was well demonstrated by test strips. Furthermore, the probe PSH was employed for imaging Al3+ and Zn2+ in HeLa cells and zebrafish.

Abstract
An indole-based fluorescent chemosensor IH-Sal was synthesized to detect Zn2+. IH-Sal displayed a marked fluorescence increment with Zn2+. The detection limit (0.41 μM) of IH-Sal for Zn2+ was greatly below that suggested by the World Health Organization. IH-Sal can quantify Zn2+ in real water samples. More significantly, IH-Sal could determine and depict the presence of Zn2+ in zebrafish. The detecting mechanism of IH-Sal toward Zn2+ was illustrated by fluorescence and UV–visible spectroscopy, DFT calculations, 1H NMR titration and ESI mass.

Abstract
A novel fluorimetric and colorimetric chemosensor (1O) was synthesized with diarylethene-rhodamine unit and characterized by ESI-MS, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR. The chemosensor can selectively recognize extremely low concentrations of Hg2+ over a variety of metal ions with remarkable colorimetric and fluorescent responses. The colorimetric and fluorescent changes were ascribed the reaction between 1O and Hg2+ destructed the rhodamine hydrazide into open-ring form which was proved by mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic titration analyses. The detection limits of the UV absorption and fluorescence methods for Hg2+ were found to be 0.708 μM and 24.6 nM, respectively. Moreover, the chemosensor exhibited excellent photochromism and outstanding fatigue resistance property under alternating UV and visible light irradiation. The application potential of the chemosensor was demonstrated with the qualitative detection of Hg2+ in real water samples.

In addition, HPHN could detect ClO- by both the color change from yellow to colorless and the fluorescence quenching. The binding modes of HPHN with Fe3+/2+ and ClO- were determined to be 1:1 with Job plot and ESI-mass analysis. HPHN displayed low detection limits of 0.29 μM for Fe3+ and 0.77 μM for Fe2+. For ClO-, the detection limit was 6.20 μM by colorimetric method and 3.99 μM by fluorescent one, respectively. Moreover, HPHN can be employed to quantify Fe3+ and ClO- in environmental samples and apply to cell imaging for ClO-.

Abstract
A pH colorimetric sensor array was prepared and characterized by combining tetrabromophenol blue (TBB) and bromothymol blue (BB) embedded in organically modified silicate (OrMoSil) spots polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-supported. The signal was based on the Hue profile (H). The individual calibrations of TBB and BB showed precisions with minimum values of 0.012 pH units at pH = 2.196 for TBB and 0.018 at pH = 6.692 for BB. The overall precision of 10 spots of the mixture TBB/BB increased in the pH range of 1.000-8.000 from a minimum value of pH precision of 0.009 at pH = 2.196 to 0.012 at pH = 6.692, with the worst value of 0.279 pH units at pH = 4.101. The possibility to produce an array with much more than 10 spots allows for improving precision. The H analytical performance was compared to those of other color spaces such as RGB, Lab, and XYZ. H was the best one, with prediction error in the range of 0.016 to 0.021 pH units, at least three times lower than the second-best (x coordinate), with 0.064 pH units. These results were also confirmed by the calculation of the main experimental contributions to the pH prediction error, demonstrating the consistency of the proposed calculation approach.

Abstract
A thiourea-based fluorescent chemosensor NADA, (E)-2-(4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-N-(naphthalen-1-yl)hydrazine-1-carbothioamide, has been designed and synthesized. NADA could detect Ga3+ through a fluorescent turn-on with a low detection limit (0.29 μM). Importantly, NADA could effectively discriminate Ga3+ from Al3+ and In3+. The binding mechanism of NADA with Ga3+ was identified by ESI-mass, NMR titration, and DFT calculations.

Abstract
Synthesis and chelation induced fluorescence emission from two imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine derivatives are described. The nonfluorescent molecule 1 containing N and O donor atoms, achieves coplanarity upon interactions with trivalent cations Al3+, Fe3+ and Cr3+, that favors fluorescence emission. Molecule 2 containing two N donor atoms attains coplanarity upon interaction with the only Zn2+ and becomes fluorescent. Both molecules 1 and 2 form a 1:1 complex with interacting metal ions. Other trivalent metal ions (including Bi3+ and In3+) and common divalent metal ions (including Hg2+ and Cd2+) fail to form any complex with 1 or 2, and they do not interfere in the detection of Zn2+, Al3+, Fe3+ or Cr3+ ions. Noninterference of other metal ions renders 1 and 2 suitable for the detection of fungal cells contaminated with Zn2+, Al3+, Fe3+ or Cr3+ ions.

Abstract
A simple Schiff base fluorescent sensor (BDNOL) was synthesized from the reaction of picolinohydrazide and 4-(diethylamino)salicylaldehyde, and developed for selective detection of Al3+ and Zn2+. This non-fluorescent sensor displayed obvious fluorescence enhancement after binding to Al3+/Zn2+ ions with high sensitivity and selectivity, accompanied by obvious fluorescence emission enhancement (504 nm for Al3+ and 575 nm for Zn2+). The detection limits were found to be 8.30 × 10-8 M for Al3+ and 1.24 × 10-7 M for Zn2+. The binding mechanisms between BDNOL and Al3+/Zn2+ ions were supported by 1H NMR and HR-MS analysis, and a density functional theory (DFT) study. The sensing behavior was also studied with molecular logic functions of OR, AND, and NOT gates. Furthermore, the fluorescent sensor was successfully used to recognize Al3+ and Zn2+ in living cells, suggesting that this simple biosensor has great potential in biological imaging applications.

Abstract
A simple relay identification fluorescence probe for Fe3+ and phosphate anion with "on-off-on" switching was designed and synthesized based on the phenylthiazole and biphenylcarbonitrile. Probe 1 displayed highly selective and sensitive recognition to Fe3+ in HEPES aqueous buffer (EtOH/H2O=2:8, v/v, pH=7.4) solutions. The optimized structures and HOMO and LUMO of probe 1 and [1-Fe3+] complex were obtained by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations with B3LYP as the exchange and correlation functional using a suite of Gaussian 09 programs. The [1-Fe3+] complex solution also showed a high selectivity toward PO43-. The lower limits of detection of probe 1 to Fe3+ and [1-Fe3+] complex to PO43- were estimated to 1.09×10-7M and 1.86×10-7M. Besides, the probe 1 also was used to detected the target ions in real water sample and living cells successfully.

Abstract
A highly sensitive and simple colorimetric assay for the detection of Fe3+ ions was developed using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) conjugated with glycol chitosan (GC). The Fe3+ ion coordinates with the oxygen atoms of GC in a hexadentate manner (O-Fe3+-O), decreasing the interparticle distance and inducing aggregation. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry showed that the bound Fe3+ was coordinated to the oxygen atoms of the ethylene glycol in GC, which resulted in a significant color change from light red to dark midnight blue due to aggregation. Using this GC-AuNP probe, the quantitative determination of Fe3+ in biological, environmental, and pharmaceutical samples could be achieved by the naked eye and spectrophotometric methods. Sensitive response and pronounced color change of the GC-AuNPs in the presence of Fe3+ were optimized at pH 6, 70°C, and 300 mM NaCl concentration. The absorption intensity ratio (A700/A510) linearly correlated to the Fe3+ concentration in the linear range of 0-180 μM. The limits of detection were 11.3, 29.2, and 46.0 nM for tap water, pond water, and iron supplement tablets, respectively. Owing to its facile and sensitive nature, this assay method for Fe3+ ions can be applied to the analysis of drinking water and pharmaceutical samples.

Abstract
Rhodamine diaminomaleonitrile linked probe (RD-1) shows highly sensitive colorimetric and selective turn-on fluorescent response to Cd2+ over other metal ions. The fluorescence intensity and absorbance of the probe RD-1 showed a good linearity, with very low detection limits of 18.5 nm. The probe RD-1 was preliminarily applied to the determination of Cd2+ ion in water samples from river and tap water with satisfying results. The live cell image confocal microscopy, HeLa cell demonstrated that RD-1 had low cytotoxicity with good membrane permeable property is successfully applied to fluorescence microscopic imaging for the detection of Cd2+ ions.

Abstract
On the basis of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), a new rhodamine derivative (DRh) was synthesized as a ratiometric fluorescent probe for detecting Hg(2+) in water and living cells samples. The recognition properties of the probe DRh with metal ions had been investigated in H2O/CH3CN (9:1, v/v; Tris-HCl 50mmolL(-1); pH=7.0) solution by the UV-Vis spectrophotometry and the fluorescence spectrophotometry. The results showed that the probe DRh exhibited the selective recognition of Hg(2+). Upon the addition of Hg(2+), the spirolactam ring of probe DRh was opened. The 1:1 stoichiometric structure between DRh and Hg(2+) were supported by Job's plot, MS and DFT theoretical calculations. The linearly fluorescence intensity ratio (I582/I538) is proportional to the concentration of Hg(2+) in the range 0-30μmolL(-1). The limit of detection (LOD) of Hg(2+) is 0.008μmolL(-1) (base on S/N=3). The present probe was applied to the determination of Hg(2+) in neutral water samples and gave recoveries ranging from 104.5 to 107.9%. Furthermore, the fluorescent probe also can be applied as a bioimaging reagent for Hg(2+) detection in HeLa cells.

Abstract
A new quinoline based sensor was developed and applied for the selective detection of Cd(2+) both in vitro and in vivo. The designed probe displays a straightforward approach for the selective detection of Cd(2+) with a prominent fluorescence enhancement along with a large red shift (∼38 nm), which may be because of the CHEF (chelation-enhanced fluorescence) and ICT (internal charge transfer) processes after interaction with Cd(2+). The interference from other biologically important competing metal ions, particularly Zn(2+), has not been observed. The visible-light excitability of the probe merits in the viewpoint of its biological application. The probe enables the detection of intracellular Cd(2+) with non-cytotoxic effects, which was demonstrated with the live RAW cells. The experimentally observed change in the structure and electronic properties of the sensor after the addition of Cd(2+) were modelled by the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) computational calculations, respectively. Moreover, the test strip experiment with this sensor exhibits both absorption and fluorescence color changes when exposed to Cd(2+) in a mixed aqueous solution, which also makes the probe more useful. The minimum limit of detection of Cd(2+) by the probe was in the range of 9.9 × 10(-8) M level.

Abstract
A "turn-on" pattern Fe(3+) -selective fluorescent sensor was synthesized and characterized that showed high fluorescence discrimination of Fe(3+) over Fe(2+) and other tested ions. With a 62-fold fluorescence enhancement towards Fe(3+) , the probe was employed to detect Fe(3+) in vivo in HeLa cells and Caenorhabditis elegans, and it was also successfully used to elucidate Fe(3+) enrichment and exchange infected by innexin3 (Inx3) in hemichannel-closed Sf9 cells.

Abstract
On the basis of the Förster resonance energy transfer mechanism between rhodamine and quinoline-benzothiazole conjugated dyad, a new colorimetric as well as fluorescence ratiometric probe was synthesized for the selective detection of Cd(2+). The complex formation of the probe with Cd(2+) was confirmed through Cd(2+)-bound single-crystal structure. Capability of the probe as imaging agent to detect the cellular uptake of Cd(2+) was demonstrated here using living RAW cells.
