Abstract
Inspired by natural photosynthesis in an organized assembly, compact H2-evolving molecular devices, which tether sensitizer and catalyst modules in one single molecule, present an opportunity to overcome the diffusion limit required for multi-component molecular systems, and increase intramolecular electron transfer rates from the photoactivated unit to the catalytic center to improve H2-evolving efficiency. Thereinto absolutely noble-metal free H2-evolving molecular devices are of particular interest because they don't contain precious and scarce noble-metal based components. This Frontier article focuses specifically on the recent advances in the design, synthesis, and photocatalytic properties of all-abundant-element molecular devices for photoinduced H2 generation via intramolecular processes. Some challenges and suggestions for future directions in this field are also illustrated.

Abstract
A meso-substituted Bodipy derived π-gelator exhibits amplified near-infrared (NIR) emission upon shearing of its film from n-decane or drying of its gel from DMSO.
We report an unprecedented strategy to generate and amplify near-infrared (NIR) emission in an organic chromophore by mechanical stress or gelation pathways. A greenish-yellow emitting film of π-extended Bodipy-1, obtained from n-decane, became orange-red upon mechanical shearing, with a 15-fold enhancement in NIR emission at 738 nm. Alternatively, a DMSO gel of Bodipy-1 exhibited a 7-fold enhancement in NIR emission at 748 nm with a change in emission color from yellow to orange-red upon drying. The reason for the amplified NIR emission in both cases is established from the difference in chromophore packing, by single crystal analysis of a model compound (Bodipy-2), which also exhibited a near identical emission spectrum with red to NIR emission (742 nm). Comparison of the emission features and WAXS and FT-IR data of the sheared n-decane film and the DMSO xerogel with the single crystal data supports a head-to-tail slipped arrangement driven by the N–H···F–B bonding in the sheared or xerogel states, which facilitates strong exciton coupling and the resultant NIR emission.

Abstract
A novel BODIPY derivative was designed for biomedical applications. Its mono-quaternized structure ensured its water-solubility and suitable amphiphilicity. Showing no singlet oxygen generation to avoid damage to healthy cells, this new derivative proved to be an extremely promising antimicrobial agent, with activity equal or superior to ampicillin against MRS Staphylococcus strains with no short-term resistance issue. Its activity against MSS Staphylococcus strains was largely superior to those of ampicillin and reached the activity of vancomycin against MSS S. epidermidis. This latter result is in particular extremely promising for the treatment of hospital-acquired infections. Also the fluorescence properties of BODIPY allowed imaging of the uptake.
