Stimuli-Responsive Properties of a Zinc(II) Salen-Type Schiff-Base Complex and Vapochromic Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds

This contribution reports, through a combined thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, UV-vis, powder X-ray diffraction, and Rietveld refinement analysis, on the stimuli-responsive chromic properties of a substituted Zn(salmal) Schiff-base Lewis acidic complex with unique and distinct thermo- and vapochromic characteristics. The solid complex obtained in air or by evaporation of the solvent from their THF solutions shows a marked thermochromism associated with a phase transition, unusually triggered by the reversible desorption/adsorption of one lattice water molecule. In contrast, the anhydrous solid, achieved from THF solutions of the complex by evaporation of the solvent under anhydrous conditions, behaves very differently as it does not show any absorption of water or thermochromism and exhibits varied vapochromic properties. Detection of volatile organic compounds having Lewis basicity is demonstrated by using the anhydrous solid or the related cast films on glass or paper substrates. In both cases, a marked vapochromism is observed upon exposure to vapors of various volatile species and involves well-defined optical absorptions and naked-eye color changes, also allowing the discrimination of primary aliphatic amines. Vapochromic behavior with the formation of stable, stoichiometric adducts is also demonstrated for both the solid obtained in air and the anhydrous solid or for the related cast films after exposure to vapors of pyridine.

Exploitation of a Half-Conjugate Polydentate Salamo-Salen Hybrid Ligand and Its Two Phenoxide-Bridged Heterohexanuclear 3d-s Double-Helical Cluster Complexes

A half-conjugate polydentate Salamo-Salen hybrid ligand, H₅L, containing two unique N₂O₂ pockets was first designed so that these metal ions in the complexes appear in different coordination modes. Two heterohexanuclear 3d-s double-helical cluster complexes, [Zn₄Ca₂L₂(μ₁-OAc)₂(EtOH)₂]·2EtOH (1; EtOH = ethanol) and [Zn₄Sr₂L₂(μ₂-OAc)₂(MeOH)₂]·2CH₂Cl₂ (2; MeOH = methanol), are reported that are formed through the reaction of H₅L with zinc(II) and calcium(II) acetate or strontium(II) acetate, respectively. IR spectral analysis of the two complexes showed the existence of monodentate- and bidentate-coordinated acetate ions. The fluorescence properties of the ligand and its two heterohexanuclear complexes were explored in MeOH and water solutions, separately. In addition, theoretical calculations (density functional theory, interaction region indicator, and bond order) were performed to further understand the formation of a single-molecular double helix and the electron distribution characteristics of the two complexes.

Synthesis and Photoluminescence of Tetracyanidonitridorhenium(V) Complexes with Five-Membered N-Heteroaromatic Ligands and Photoluminescence-Intensity Change

Novel tetracyanidonitridorhenium(V) complexes with five-membered N-heteroaromatic ligands, (PPh₄)₂[ReN(CN)₄L] [L = imidazole (Him) (2), 1-methylimidazole (Mim) (3), and pyrazole (pyz) (4)] and (PPh₄)₂[ReN(CN)₄L]·L [L = Him (5) and Mim (6)], were synthesized by the reactions of (PPh₄)₂[ReN(CN)₄] (1) with Him, Mim, and pyz, and their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The complexes 2, 3, 4, and 6 showed intense photoluminescence, with the emission quantum yields (Φ_em) being 0.65-0.75 in the solid state at 296 K. In contrast, the Φ_em and τ_em values of 5 are significantly smaller and shorter, respectively, than the relevant values of 2. The interconversion reactions among 1, 2, and 5 accompanied by large photoluminescence-intensity changes were accomplished by solvent-free reactions and exposure of water. The mechanochemical reaction of 2 with 1 mol equiv of Him in the solid state gave 5. Complex 5 was also obtained by the mechanochemical reaction of 1 with 2 mol equivalents of Him in the solid state. By placing solid of 5 in water, the solid showed intense photoluminescence to give 2. Complex 1 was produced under vacuum at 185 °C from 2 or 5.

A luminescent benzothiadiazole-bridging bis(salicylaldiminato)zinc(ii) complex with mechanochromic and organogelation properties

Herein, a new bis(salicylaldiminato)Zn(ii) Schiff base complex, BTZn, derived from benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-5,6-diamine was designed and synthesized. It exhibited unique mechanical force-induced luminescence change characteristic. Upon mechanical grinding, the as-prepared BTZn solid crystalized from an ethanol/dichloromethane solution displays a high-contrast emission-colour variation from yellow (emission maximum λem = 545 nm) to red (λem = 645 nm), and this emission variation can be erased through solvent vapour treatment. The reversible emission colour alteration between yellow and red can be repeatedly performed. Thermal annealing of the as-prepared BTZn solid resulted in a more ordered orange phase with an emission maximum of 575 nm. The multi-stimuli-responsive luminescence mechanism has been investigated via SEM, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal analyses. It is demonstrated that mechanical force can induce morphology transformation from the crystalline to the amorphous phase, which is accompanied by a change in the BTZn molecular packing modes. The BTZn-based solids have molecular packing-dependent emission characteristics. The XRD experimental results reveal that for the yellow emissive as-prepared BTZn solid, a columnar square molecular arrangement is adopted. On the other hand, the BTZn complex exhibits the ability to organize into organic luminescent gels constructed by one-dimensional BTZn molecular nanofibrils. The BTZn xerogel also displays mechanochromic properties. Accordingly, BTZn-based solids may be potential candidates for the development of new stimuli-responsive materials.

A novel carbazole-based gold(i) complex with interesting solid-state, multistimuli-responsive characteristics

A novel carbazole-based gold(ι) complex is reported. The luminogen exhibits significative solid-state reversible mechanochromism, dual-responsive thermochromism and sensitive thin-film vapochromism properties.
